I’ve been writing for a long time.

I submitted my first short story to Highlights magazine in 1977.

I never got a reply.

In high school I wrote a lot of really bad poetry. Mercifully, I didn’t save any of it.

The first thing I ever had published was an essay in my college newspaper. The typesetter misspelled the word "sing" as "sign" in the last line and the whole thing made no sense whatsoever.

After graduation I got a job writing copy for a big advertising agency. I would have stayed there forever if I hadn’t gotten laid off on my twenty-fifth birthday. I grabbed a stapler and some sticky notes before I was escorted out of the building by a police officer.

I started writing fabulous articles and submitting them to all of the Fancy New York City Magazines (FNYCMs). None of them were ever published, although I did get one really nice, hand-written rejection letter.

One day, a FNYCM Editor offered me a job. I was so excited that I took it without knowing the salary. A few years later, I moved to another FNYCM. And then another. Dozens more asked me to write articles in exchange for actual money. I moved to California, wrote a book, had some babies, and wrote several more books. I gave a TED talk, flipped a house on TV and learned how to play tennis. Right now I’m trying to give up processed food and teach myself how to write a screenplay. At the same time. It’s not easy.

Someday I’d like to start a petition to have the words mauve and moist removed from the English language.

I don’t like to brag, but I’m the luckiest person I know. I’m married to my best friend, I work in my pajamas and I have two beautiful, healthy, hilarious daughters. I like cats and sparkly things and laughing until my sides hurt. And hats. I really like hats.

Oh, and I’m not Jenny McCarthy. But you knew that, right?

I knew when I bought this book that it was NOT an instruction manual for babies or parenthood of any kind BUT that instead that it was book "guaranteed to make me laugh." And laugh I did!
This was a fun light read that made me giggle, chuckle and cry from laughing so hard in every chapter and help me to feel like I wasn't the only one going crazy with trying to do it all before the baby comes (and after.)
Some of my favorite lines were:

{This quote comes from the authors first attempts at using a breast pump.} "The maiden voyage is terrifying. I watch in horror as as it draws my nipple out until it is approximately eight feet long. I desperately want to turn the machine down or off, but I'm afraid if I let go of the funnels my breast tissue will get completely sucked into the motor!"

One of the chapters is titled, "Is my baby okay? (a field guide to overreacting.)" This chapter talks about fevers, doctors visits and poop.

"What color is her poop supposed to be? I realize this would be considered a taboo subject if I were talking about my own doo-doo, but seriously. She consumes ONE THING AND ONE THING ONLY. Shouldn't the subsequent waste matter be one consistent, uniform color? You'd think so, but no. On any given day it might be green, yellow, brown, black, orange, even white. Apparently, it's "all normal."

I read this because my good friend's friend wrote it. It's a cleverly written book about a woman's experience with pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood. It was hilarious and extremely candid. I learnt a lot and to be honest, it's made me terrifed to become a parent! I had NO idea that milk squirts out in all directions from your nipples :-O ! I would definitely recommend this to anyone contemplating parenthood (women AND men) and to those that have gone down that road.

I always had to make sure I emptied my bladder before I picked this book up. Jenna has a way of making you belly laugh through some of the most mundane ridiculousness of life. Reading this books is what brought me out of my postpartum funk...it was like talking with that one friend who is so spot on when describing the craziness of raising babies. This is a great read for new (or old) moms or women who just like to laugh.

Not terribly informational, and just a tad (more like, a LOT) over-exaggerated, this book is nonetheless a funny, entertaining look in brief at what it's like to be a new parent. I would say, dial it back about five notches, take into account that everyone's experience differs, and this book would be just about right, accuracy-wise.

This was a funny book. Good for moms who have a sense of humor about parenting. Sort of reminds me of the Jenny McCarthy books ( very close in name I know!) but with less cursing or offensive language.

very different from typical parenting books--candid, raw, hysterical--and that's JUST THE AUTHOR---the book is fabulous!
