(3.5) A punchy and practical guidebook for communicating with excellence. But what about communications as a tool for discipleship?

Would recommend, mostly to those who haven’t studied marketing/comms and find themselves in such a position.

Okay, but really y'all, this is a little embarrassing- I have 115 highlights in this book. And I can testify that a large majority of them are page-long highlights. I'm not even going to make them public because I feel like I'd probably be just allowing people to read the book for free. (And this book is actually worth so much more than I paid for it, even at full price).

This is AMAZING stuff! So glad I read it. Already planning my re-read for next summer, because one of the things I want to do for work is to develop an employee handbook and her tips on leading teams are amaaaaaaaaaaazing! Can't wait. :D

Kem has an incredible sense of humor & wit. Her ability for storytelling and fly on the wall insight was spot on. Our communication team read this book quickly but discussed it 1-2 chapters at a time. We then took our new confidence, shared the wise insights and implemented changes immediately. We adopted the less is more philosophy and have held our ground. We are improving weekly. One bulletin at a time!

pg 37 - Where am I engaged in corporate self-talk? Are there formal or information feedback mechanisms in place to help identify my communication misses? Something that reveals when I sound ridiculous or out-of-touch to outsiders?

39 - More isn't what people are looking for; relief from the pressure of more is what they're looking for.

41 - Stick to the facts. Don't over-sell, over-explain or over-control. Just provide the information someone needs to self-sort and self-decide.

Pretty good, but much of it was so large church oriented that I am not sure how to adapt to my small church. We don’t have a “team” or multiple departments, etc. We just want to grow and communicate who we are to others so they can know Christ. I was missing some of the advice on the best way to do that, but maybe that’s another book.

One Word

"Insightful" ... There are many views I had about the different aspects of Church Communication and Kem with was able to challenge, support and discredit some of the notions I had.

I'm grateful for her willingness to share her experiences and feel privileged to have set my eyes on these pages.

This is a really practical book, written in a light-hearted, easy to read style. Meyer was a communications director at a mega church and shares her best practices and things she learned along the way.

This isn't written with the communications or marketing graduate in mind, but rather the average person who might find themselves overseeing communications in a church or any small non-profit.

This book gives great insight and helps to promote thinking about how communication happens, especially in ministry. Easier type of read. Short chapters with great illustrations to explain the concepts and points bring presented. Great for those newer to ministry.

In 2026 I’m not sure that the social media content in the book is still 100% applicable, but overall this book presents clear, compelling strategies that all church communicators can benefit from.
