After rejecting the cult-like influence of her father's family, Julia moves into a fancy hotel in downtown Austin. But she finds herself alone except for her boyfriend, John--and her fears. Once again she's suppressing her abilities, afraid her family will come for John when they find out he's been developing abilities of his own in her presence. The FBI is also keeping a close eye on Julia hoping she can lead them to her father, Novak, as he's wanted for questioning in his former assistant's death.
With tensions high, Julia and John agree to go separate ways for the summer, paving the way for Julia to reunite with Angus, fellow outcast. Together they set out on a road trip to California to find Julia's mom and a way into Novak's secret underground world. Along the way Julia will learn the Puri perhaps aren't the only humans evolving into something different. . . and that maybe she's the leader her people have needed all along.
In order to keep their love alive, they have to go their separate ways. That’s Julia’s plan to save John from her own family. John is now discovering and developing his abilities and that’s something that Novak, Julia’s father, can never know about or he will take him away from her. But throughout their parted ways, Angus makes an appearance back in Julia’s life, encouraging her to find out more about the Puris, risking her relationship with John.
Select Few, Marit Wiesenberg's 2nd book in the Select series, begins with Julia Jaynes essentially hiding from the world. She's avoiding the FBI, avoiding the paparazzi, avoiding nosy neighbors, and - most of all - avoiding being discovered by her dangerous and powerful father, Novak. She's also desperately trying to keep her boyfriend, John, and his newly discovered powers off of Novak's radar. Julia's doing a lot of hiding and all the while hoping to someday be able to live a normal life.
John's point of view added depth to the narrative and helped cement the romantic undercurrent between Julia and John despite their intense conflicts and separation throughout the book.
Although the resolution was fast-paced, the action of the main story was very slow. It seemed like most of the excitement came while reading the characters' flashbacks to activities performed in the first book. And for a fantasy/sci-fi story, I expected a tad more fantasy and sci-fi.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Charlesbridge Teen, and the author for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy of this book.
I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Okay, so I just recently dove back into the first book of this series Select. The second time around I still ended up loving the whole thing: characters, story, drama, etc. You name it and I probably loved it.
After diving into this book, Select Few, well I can honestly say I still really enjoyed everything. Julia is such a strong character to get behind. I honestly have no idea how I would survive or what I would do if I was ever put in her position. She walked away from her family, even knowing that her dad wanted to leave her behind, and she still ended up proving to not only herself but to everyone from her old community that she was stronger than before. She was the next true leader and all she had to do was stand up to her crazy and super douchey dad.
However, that doesn't mean that I loved every little thing about this book because trust me I was mad at a ton of stuff. Julia and Angus were just frustrating at times. The there was the whole mom thing and that got me mad too. I just feel liked characters did certain things that just ended up rubbing me the wrong way. Towards the end, I definitely feel like they sort of redeemed themselves.. but I'm still not one hundred percent sure.
Then there's Julia and John - I just simply adored them. I hated how they were when they were apart. Of course it frustrated them both and things were happening out of their control.. John's little rebellion when he was using his magic to heal him when he knew he wasn't supposed to use his ability at all. Then the whole fighting going on between them almost broke my heart. I just wanted them to end up together because they honestly were way better when they were actually together.
Again, I just loved these two so much. Overall, the ending was perfect in my eyes. I have no comments or improvements for it. I loved getting to read some of John's POV (because it was amazing) and I just hope and pray that there's going to be a third book. If not, I will be happy with these two forever.
I ended up really enjoying this contemporary fantasy! I'm sure that I would have connected with the story earlier had I read the first book in the series. It was interesting enough and had enough detail for me to follow the current plot. The story deals with trust between family and friends and how to overcome & forgive betrayals. Especially if they are intentional!
I recommend this book as a quick read to lovers of YA fantasy and romance. I'm looking forward to finding the first book (and hopefully the third book) next!
Thanks to Netgalley for an advanced reader's copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I loved this second book in the Select series! The second book was as good or better than the first. Julia had decided to break with her family when they went into hiding and is now living in a hotel (she has all the family money and is very wealthy!). She is trying to suppress her enhanced abilities, but people are always drawn to her anyway so she stays hidden as much as possible. The story continues where the first book left off and I think you would miss a lot if you haven't read the first book.
This is a fun fantasy read and I would recommend it. The story is unique and interesting. It is well written in a style that is easy to read and keeps you interested.
Thanks to Marit Wiesenberg and Charlesbridge through Netgalley for an advance copy of this novel.
This is book 2 and they have to be read in order. I enjoyed book 1 but I'm stopping at 51% in this one because:
1. I feel like I've been reading this book forever. Nothing has happened.
2. The h is being led around by her nose, manipulated by everyone around her. I thought she was smarter than this. A lamb to slaughter puts up a bigger fight.
3. The back and forth in timeframe isn't working for me. It's just annoying me to not know how or what is between these two. They are both too passive for my taste.
Again, I did enjoy the first book in this series. I'm sorry I couldn't connect as well with the 2nd one.

After having read and loved Marit Wiesenberg's first novel Select, I had very high hopes for her second one. Select Few didn't disappoint me, it was just as good as I thought it would be. Julia and Angus embark on a road trip. For Julia being again with one of the members of her extended family is a welcome change after months of feeling abandoned by them. The downside is that although she thinks that she is protecting her beloved Jhon, she just cannot live without him. The author has written a plot that is both romantic and exciting at the same time since Julia and Angus are trying to run away from the FBI and also looking for Julia's birth mother. During this journey, Julia will learn facts about her past and make decisions that will shape her future. If you liked Select, you really need to read Select Few, it's one of those novels you don't want to finish but you can't stop reading. A good sci-fi book and also a remarkable YA one.
Suppress Natural Powers! Try to fit in without Standing out! This is the second in the SELECT series and since I had not read the first one it was difficult to feel the dynamics between the main characters Julia, John, and Angus. Julia Wants to be with John but Needs to be with Angus. Highly evolved beings being exposed is a life threatening danger. Wiesenberg does an excellent job of creating an entertaining story with a supernatural flavor. Trust is everything and can be disguised in deception. HEA is achieved so give this series a try. "A copy of this book was provided by Charlesbridge Teen via Netgalley with no requirements for a review. Comments here are my honest opinion."
Scheduled for release in October 2018, I have to thank the publishers and NetGalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of this. Having chosen to leave her family, life is difficult for Julia. Hiding out in a hotel, with people hunting her father, Julia is desperate for answers but also needs to avoid doing things that could mean any of Novak’s visions come true. Though she loves John, her worries for what could happen to an outsider dominate the early stages of the novel. This becomes more concerning as John seems to be developing his own special talents. Initially a little slow, there’s a lot of focus on Julia trying to get answers to questions about herself, her family and what might happen in the future. There’s a rather dramatic closing section, but the possibilities for the future are exciting and I’m intrigued to see where this goes next.
A copy was given to me via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the first book, Select, and when I found out that there will be a second book, I couldn't wait.
All throughout the book, I debated on whether I should give this four or five stars. Don't get me wrong. It was well-written and very engaging. But the problem is, in majority of the book, I was mad. I was so pissed at the characters, especially at Angus and Julia. I honestly wanted to run Angus over with a car. The only person who hasn't gotten on my bad side is John. He doesn't deserve to suffer and I just wanted to protect him and let him be happy. :(
You know that feeling when you see a car crash about to happen but you have no power to stop it and all you can do is watch? That's exactly what I felt while reading the book. I could see everything is going to fall apart from a mile away. And it frustrates me so much that all Julia did was go straight into it. I desperately wanted to reach inside the book and shake some sense into her. But what's even more frustrating is that I can't really blame her and I understood that she did all that because she thought she was doing the right thing.
One of the best things I liked in this book — which the first one didn't have — is John's POV. It definitely felt like it was John speaking and everything was so heartbreaking. The author managed to draw a line between each character's thinking to separate them from each other.
What I wished this book could have done differently is how it integrated fantasy into reality. I would have loved it if the fantasy elements were more grounded in reality to make it seem believable. I feel that some events and key points in the plot were introduced in a way that feels a little surreal and outrageous.
Other than that, this was a really great read and I highly enjoyed it. I wouldn't mind, no — in fact, I would love it if there is a third book.
After reading Select, and growing curious about what happens to Julia Jaynes, I had to know what happens!
And I was so excited to receive an eARC - thank you!
So when this sequel picked up close to where Select left off I was excited...
But then it all stalled out...
I kept going back and back, trying to grab hold to the magic I felt sparking near the end of Select, but I couldn't find it.
I realized I was skimming all of the paragraphs and reading only the dialogue and first sentences of paragraphs... and that's no way to read a book, especially one I had such high hopes for.
The main issue, and why I can't keep reading this one, is because the whole feel of the book is old. It's been done- between xmen and all of the dystopian books that came out in the last 10 years, nothing new is sparking my attention, and the characters are flat as a result.
I know some are loving this book, so please don't see this as a caution to not read the book - it just simply was not for me this time.

Review: For the most part, this book did well to get the reader from point A to point B. It tells a decent story and, while not what I expected, it does well to convey what the author wanted.
So, I really loved the first book and it set the bar for this book and I feel like this book did not meet that bar. The book was just really flat and it felt like the author didn’t know exactly what to do in this book. I think it was a case of “second book in the series” syndrome but it was just not living up to my expectations. I was also really annoyed by the main character throughout this novel lol.
Verdict: I’d read it so you know how the series continues.
I wanted to like this book as much as the first but it just wasn’t a good fit for me. I’m still giving it three stars because I like the writing style, characters and the premise for the series. For me though the book was too slow and I found myself putting it down quite a bit. I also didn’t like the back and forth narrative. It did add a little depth but I tend to lose focus with books written in that style unless they are very well done. I may still give the third book a chance because the premise is really good and I hope that things will pick up.
Another page turner from Marit Wiesenberg! I was stuck in an airport for eight hours and read "Select Few" cover to cover. I loved the settings in this book, the tension between the the principal characters, and the suspense as they are on the run. Can't wait for the next installment. FANTASTIC book series to give to young adults!
Select Few was better than its predecessor, and now, I am still left wanting more! Well written, with quite a bit of mystery, and those supernatural powers Julia and her family have - this worked really well!
Warning! This is the second and last book in the series! If you haven't read "Select" the first book in the series proceed with caution!
First Thoughts:
I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to jump back into this world so easily. It was like I hadn't even left it at all. Granted it was just last January when I read the first book! So not too long ago but I've read quite a many books since then, so this really was a pleasant surprise. So much happened in this book and I was sad to see it end. I've been reading books that are just part of a duo-logy lately and it's making me sad. I kind of want to read more with the same characters and their world. I feel like this book could offer so much more. Like the author could perhaps sprout a prequel (Please?!). Ugh! So much to say about this book so lets get started!
Goodreads Summary:
After rejecting the cult-like influence of her father's family, Julia moves into a fancy hotel in downtown Austin. But she finds herself alone except for her boyfriend, Jonn--and her fears.
Along the way Julia will learn the Puri perhaps aren't the only humans evolving into something different...and that maybe she's the leader her people have needed all along.
Plot:
This story picked back up from the first book though it was the beginning of summer where it picked back up. This book took me only a few sittings to finish it. Though it was slow at a few points it always picked back up. A lot of the questions that were asked in the first book were answered in this book. I do recommend that if you haven't read the first book that you read that one first because you definitely won't be as invested in this book as if you'd had. Plus you will be confused on what's happening in this story and not know what's going on and why the characters are reacting the way they are. I liked that this book was creative in a way that created a new type of human; a more advanced one. And there were definitely lots of twists and turns but was predictable at some points. But the book never made me want to put down the book and start another one. I was immersed in another world and was taken along with the characters and the dramatics of the story. Definitely a great book to read if you're looking for something different. Though this story is in a way similar to those with paranormal powers it made it different in a way that isn't like your typical story.
Romance:
Okay this was one area of the book where I had a few problems. First I never really liked the whole love triangle. I mean pick your love already! It doesn't have to be complicated. I mean come on! Stick with the person your heart desires, it's kind of hard to love two people so completely like Julia did. And I was really rooting for John...he's so perfect for her! And the whole picture where Angus comes and tries to steal Julia's heart? Yeah not liking it. Won't tell you who she chooses but be prepared for some ups and downs!
Characters:
Julia is the main character in the story and she is pretty much a strong heroine. Though there is a few points I kind want to punch her for the decisions she makes. I mean come on don't be that stupid! But other than that she really is a strong person for all that's she's been though. I mean losing your family maybe not in death but losing them all the same is still hard. She has to deal with suppressing her powers which is painful physically but also emotionally. Also John and Angus were the co-stars in this book. At one point I really hated Angus and by the end I was satisfied with him. John made me a little upset but other than that he really added to the story. As for the minor characters like Angus's old gang and others of their kind they kind of just were flat not really adding or subtracting from the story.
Transformation of Character:
Julia changed a little overall but not as much as I would have liked to seen. Other than a few tweaks to her personality she pretty much stayed the same. Actually Liv kind of did some transformation of her own. At the end she really did surprise me. Don't want to spoil the story so I'll just leave her at that.I kind think Julia's stepmother did more transformation than Julia, but it was still a good addition to the story just not what I would've liked to see.
Description:
Loved the description in the book. The author had a great way of describing certain scenes in the book. I was actually quite surprised. I actually thought the description in this book was better than the first. I was really able to see each place the characters visited, especially Julia and Angus's road trip adventure. And towards the ending one place especially was described excellent, really allowed me to picture it and get a good idea on the development of the story. And description on how the characters were feeling was awesome too. I really got a good grasp on the minds of both Julia and John. They both had a complex thinking process when it came time to grasping what was happening to them.
Style:
This was written in first person and was mainly written in one POV(point of view). I say mainly because in the first half of the book you see some scenes written in John's POV while most of the story is written in Julia's POV. And John 's POV was short compared to Julia's but it still had so much emotion attached to it, so much insight that wasn't revealed until the end. The book format was really well thought out and the way John's POV was placed was perfect that by the end it made the story that much more special and easier to understand. I liked the author's writing itself, kept me intrigued and easy to read. This is definitely in prose format and allowed the book to flow more smoothly.
Quote of the Book:
""That's who I was." I dangled the necklace over the drawer of my beside table, lowering it gently, then closing it back in the dark. "I have to stop. It's too dangerous to be different.""
Last Thoughts:
This book took me on a ride of a lifetime that left me gasping for air and left me with little to no sleep. I really enjoyed this book and was sad to see it end. I really do think there's way more stories this world could create so I wouldn't be surprised to see the author do a prequel. But if she doesn't this book still left me satisfied. And can I not mention the cover of this book?! It's amazing one of my favorite covers of the year so far; absolutely gorgeous! So dear readers be on the look out for this book when it comes out this October! And if you haven't read the first one go buy it and be prepared for a trip of a lifetime! You'll have plenty of time to read the first book before diving into "Select Few"!
This was a good read. I enjoyed the way this book was a bit more developed than the first book. I still feel like there could have been more information shared about the tribes. I enjoyed the drama and secrets that were revealed in this book.
Julia has become so annoying 3/4 of this book. She kept trying to lose her abilities, which was just impossible to do. I didn't care for her "on the run" lifestyle. She was too cautious and too relaxed. I needed more from her as far as being bold and that didn't happen until the last 1/4 of the book. Julia had to deal with a lot outside of leaving her tribe and family. She was able to meet with her mother and I loved that, but I disliked the interaction she had with her. I will say, in-spite of Julia holding back, that ending made it all better for me. I can definitely see her as the next leader for sure.
John was so damn amazing. He was beginning to develop his own abilities and really coming into himself. I loved seeing his struggle with his power, but how he looked at them more differently than Julia did. John was very optimistic about life, but when it came to himself he was always negative. John is simply kickass and the PERFECT boyfriend.
Angus was annoying as all heck! I hated how he just popped back up thinking he could get back with Julia. He annoyed me with making everything about himself and the past. He plans pissed me off and his schemes made me made. For his role as the best friend/ex-boyfriend/ex-crush, he did well, but as I character I can't stand him.
The romance was still so amazing. I loved the drama that was between Julia and John with having to be separated for two months to stave off Novak. I loved how cute they were together. I loved the addition of tension with the return of Angus. Everything about John and Julia together is perfect.
Liv was seriously pissing me off, but I adored her as a sister still. She believed her father so much, but knew in her heart that her sister, Julia, was the "chosen one" and I loved it. When you expected her to be jealous, she wasn't. She really just wanted to be connected with her sister, but because of their upbringing their relationship was strained. I can't wait to see how their relationship gets better if there's a third book.
Elizabeth was strange. I understood her feelings concerning her relationship with Novak. I mean everything that happened was so messed up, but the way she interacted with Julia pissed me off. She should have showed more emotion towards her. I hope they develop a better relationship.
Miriam seems like a trustworthy person, but it still sounds too good to be true. Novak is still a terrible man. I feel as if he let his relationship with Elizabeth run his life. What he did to Elizabeth, Julia and Liv can never be forgiven, but I hope he finds away to redeem himself.
The ending left me wanting more. I hope there is the 3rd book because I'd love to see how they survive up top. Great YA dystopian/fantasy read.
There is a very chatty blurb, and my advice is – don’t read it before picking up the book. The first book ended on something of a cliffhanger with a sudden revelation right at the very end, which turned everything on its head and had Julia making a snap decision not to join her family in their flight to a new life. So the start of Select Few has Julia coming to terms with that decision, after realising the enormity of her loss. She now has to make her way without her sister, whom she loves and misses and her overbearing authoritarian father. While at times she has revelled in her new freedom, she has also discovered that freedom is often accompanied by loneliness. Her relationship with John is also problematical, given that revelation at the end of the first book, so while her feelings for him are a comfort, he is often at a loss to understand her behaviour.
The reason I can discuss John’s feelings with such authority is that this book is a dual narrative with Julia’s first-person viewpoint telling most of the story, interleaved with John’s observations, addressed directly to Julia in the form of some kind of journal. If you haven’t read Select I recommend you do so if you are not feeling particularly bonded with the main characters, or you cannot work out what is going on. Given the first slice of the story is taken up with what is happening, I think this is one of those series where you really can’t crash midway in the series without floundering – and that would be a shame as I found the early part of the book particularly gripping while I tried to work out where it would go next.
Of course, if you are held at the start, the build-up has to really lead something – we’ve all read books which start with a bang and simply can’t sustain the momentum. Fortunately, Weisenberg has sufficient story and drive that the climax and final stages bring the book to a satisfying and convincing end.
I wasn’t as fed up with the inevitable love triangle as I usually am, and to be honest, I’m not sure why. But perhaps it was because I was sufficiently caught up in the main story and found the road trip also helped Julia comes to terms with some important issues along the way. Recommended for fans of paranormal coming-of-age books. While I obtained an arc of Select Few from the publisher via Netgalley, the opinions I have expressed are unbiased and my own. 8/10
Title: Select Few (Select #2) Author: Marit Weisenberg Pages: 377 Genre: Young Adult, Romance, Superpowers Rating: 4 out of 5 stars This is an Advanced Readers Copy. That means that this is not the final version of the book therefore some facts and quotes are subject to change in the published book. Julia Jaynes comes from a cult like family of people with extraordinary abilities. When she is able to finally escape from them (Book #1) she realizes she never really did. This leads to a crisis country trip to discover more about who she really is. Oh No's Julia makes the worst decisions. Like honestly, it was just constant selfish decision after the next that was obviously going to turn out wrong. Not telling John anything and at the same time demanding he follow her every order was obviously going to blow up sooner or later. This is why we don't keep secrets, children. Angus is just an asshole the entire time and constantly manipulates Julia. This is a classic almost abuse tactic so please do not think that Angus did anything for her. He was even more selfish than she was and made it all seem like it was his idea in the end. Yay's I loved finding out what John is thinking throughout Julia's travels. We are introduced to John being trapped somewhere and hoping that Julia is listening. He tells her the truth of what happened while they were separated. In the book, these blurbs coincided with what happened in the story so it was really cool to see that interaction. One thing I loved is that this was better than the first book. This book had everything already established and the big plot go down. We now follow the characters after their seperation from the Puri lifestyle but they are still afraid of what might be out there. Finally, This was a great sequel to the first. It turns out this is a duology so we actually got an end to the story. I really recommend this series if you are looking for kids with supernatural abilities. So, confession time: I did it again. I picked up a stunning-looking book without realizing it was the second novel in a series. Select Few, written by Marit Weisenberg, is the second novel in the Select series. Thankfully, you can still (apparently) follow along without having read the first novel. Speaking from experience.
Julia just rejected the cult-like influence that came with her father's family. Now, she must face her fears. Thankfully, she's not entirely alone, as her boyfriend (John) has stuck around. Only, that's part of her fear that her family will come for John.
To make matters more complicated, the FBI hopes to find Julia's father through her, which doesn't comfort Julia in the least. Still, this adventure is about to start something new, including a journey towards self-realization.
Select Few is a fantasy novel perfect for readers who love that careful balance of magic and drama. There's a lot of both within these pages, creating something that is both fast-paced and entertaining.
I was impressed by how easy it was to follow along, despite accidentally skipping the first novel in the series. Though admittedly, I think it kept me from forming as strong of a connection for the characters. Sorry.
A lot is going on here, and some of it took me a bit of time to process. Again, not because I had difficulty following it simply because it actually carried a lot of weight with it. Or at least, it felt like my emotions and mind needed time to settle at certain points. Maybe that's just me. Overall, I'd say that Select Few is worth reading – especially for fans of the series!
Thanks to Charlesbridge Teen and #NetGalley for making this book available for review. All opinions expressed are my own.
ARC provided by Charlesbridge Teen via NetGalley for an honest review.
This book was a bit of a let down from the first one. It felt disjointed and the plot just moved at a snail’s pace for most of it. The final confrontation between Julia and her father fell totally flat, and by the end of it I felt a bit confused. I think part of the issue might be that this was an ARC that just didn’t feel complete. There were times when I felt like there were parts of the text missing as evidenced by large blank spots and sentences starting in the middle. Hopefully if this is the case, these errors were caught before the final print.
The thing I remember liking the most from that first book was the romance/relationship between Julia and John. Sadly this was not the case with this book. They spend most of it separated from each other, which made it hard for them to develop their love for each other. I also started to dislike Julia a little bit in this book, she gets a little whiney and wimpy instead of the strong and self-sufficient girl from the first book. I also didn’t like the part of the book where she finds her mother. That back story just didn’t work well for me.
As I said before John and Julia spend most of the book apart and we don’t hear from John except for little snippets of thoughts at the start of some of the chapters. I would have liked to see more from him as his story line was far more interesting than Julia’s in this book.
This book had potential to be so much better, and I hope that the final edit fixed a lot of what I had issues with. I believe this is a duology, but there is potential for another book. Things were left open ended enough that it could go on. Not sure if I will continue if it does though after this one not quite doing it for me. https://elnadesbookchat.com/
I’m starting my review off by saying I’m a dork. I requested a copy and actually got it. I read the description and saw the cover and quickly hit the request button. Roughly a week later I got an email saying enjoy my copy. I was dancing and couldn’t wait to start reading it. I started reading and enjoying it that night. I was even bragging to my friend saying look what I got. The more I read the more I confused I got. I kept thinking that I must have missed something so I started again. My friend asked me if I was enjoying it and I was just utterly confused so I started it again. I repeated this process three times. Yes I just said three times then I noticed something that escaped me. I was reading book 2 in the series. Now I realized I missed a huge chunk in the story and now knew why I was confused. Now it has been two weeks that I received it and still haven’t finished it so I drove down to the bookstore to get book one. They didn’t have it so I had to order it and wait a few days to get it. That was the biggest dork moment I have had in awhile. I’m glad I read the first book because now I enjoyed and UNDERSTOOD the second book. The character development was amazing and the storyline. It is absolutely captivating. I loved Julia and her interesting and heart breaking family dynamic. I will be recommending this series to my friends in order.
I love the book cover. You would have to have read book 1 to “get” the cover art [other than it being a pretty cover]. It lends a bit of mystery and illusion, or if you want to get philosophical ;-), maybe the image portrays hope (butterflies) for a broken world.
“Select Few” is the sequel to “Select”, book 1 (which fascinated and intrigued me – fabulous!). This book, while a great fantasy follow up . . . the first half of the book was . . . monotonous. Where is the excitement? Where is the seat gripping suspense? Again, this was a good book, BUT after the build up of the fantasy, the characters, the mystery, the fantasy, suspense and exciting events of book 1 . . . . this book was like a child's Merry-go-round vs the screaming roller coaster of book 1.
This book just limped along to a small firecracker pop at the end.
Definitely read book 1 “Select” first or you will not understand all the dynamic relationships between the characters in this story.
I usually write longer, more enthusiastic book reviews..... I'll try to do better next time. :-D
Thank you netgalley for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Select Few is a direct continuation of Select, so readers new to the series should put down this review and read no further. Julia is on her own, without her sister, father and the rest of their clan. The plan is to follow her boyfriend John as he navigates the summer tennis tournaments, then attend college together in the fall. When things change and Julia goes her own way for the summer, will the relationship with John survive the absence? Will links to the past finally provide Julia with answers?
Although there are a few questions answered, the book is so flat that I hardly cared to hear the explanations. The flashes forward to John's thoughts and feelings really do nothing to help move the story along. There is too much going on, but without the background necessary to really give the ideas some legs. The conclusion is barely a blip on the radar and then it is gone. For these reasons, I would be hesitant to recommend Select Few to other readers.
I was given the opportunity to read Select Few by Charlesbridge Teen and NetGalley. I chose to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Select Few was just as wonderful as it promised to be based on the first in the series. It picks right up and you hurtle headlong into the mess that is Julia's life. With threats all around from frenemies, her people, her father, she's trying to buy time until she thinks she will be able to start her "normal" life away at school. Before that can happen and before her people go into hiding, she needs to keep John safe. When a road trip with Angus leads her back to her mother, will she find peace and the answers her soul needs?
Knowing the characters from the first title makes you feel that much more connected to them. I simultaneously wanted to struggle and squeeze Angus. I felt all the emotions John was coping with. Allowing him more of a unique voice in this book elevated it in my opinion. Emotional, angst-ridden, elusive Julia remains one of my favorites. The exploration of family within the context of these teens is well done and shouldn't be missed.

Select Few is the sequel to Select which follows Julia and her cult-like family as they try to hide their unusual abilities from the rest of the world. Oh, and Julia's forbidden romance with John, an outsider. This one picks up where the first book left off and is a twisty story about love, the complexity of family relationships, and discovering who you are. The series also has a very interesting premise involving human evolution and unusual abilities.
A lot happens in this book and while it was interesting, the plot felt rather meandering at times. The first book felt much more straightforward in terms of structure and plot beats and I think this could have been streamlined. However, I still very much enjoyed it. We do get a bit of a love triangle in this book, and we finally get to learn more about Julia's mysterious mother. It does a good job wrapping up loose ends to a satisfying conclusion, but still leaves room for more. I received an advance review copy of this book via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
***ecopy provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*** I have to start by saying that I loved the romance in the story. John and Julia are perfect and not for a second I thought Angus would be a love interest so that was nice, not a love triangle (even if I don't mind love triangles). The going back and forth in the chapters was the only thing I didn't like and actually all the way till the end I didn't quite get the parts that seemed like diary entries or inner thoughts about John. I was really confused about those parts but then at the end I got it, I understood what was happening. I really do like their story, it's quite different (the plot and background are really cool) and I gotta say that I would still like to read more of their story. I don't know if this is the last book but I believe that there is room for more. It's not a cliffhanger and the story felt like it had ended but there could be more and I would read it for sure. Would definitely recommend the Select series to all my friends.
After really enjoying the previous book (Select) I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this instalment. I hoped it would captivate me as much as the first book and I’m pleased to say that it certainly did.
In no time at all I was once again immersed in Julia’s world. She was facing an uncertain future and still had many unanswered questions. Her emotions were palpable, jumping out at me and causing me to feel everything she felt!
There were so many eventful scenes but some of my favourite moments included: a tension-filled road trip, John’s thoughts, an unexpectedly revealing interview and a great escape.
This was a fantastic sequel containing plenty of revelations, power and a complicated romance. I couldn’t stop reading and was left wanting more.
Sequels usually set themselves up to fail, but I have no other choice but to say that "Select Few" was better than its predecessor.
Even though Julie is still not completely sure of herself, I loved to see her grow beyond just the girl torn between young love and seeking approval from her douchehbag father. I was more surprised by some of the plot twists and enjoyed seeing the different sides of both John and Julia.
Still in love with the concept, still love the take-home messages of regret and making your own choices. I am excited and anxious to read the final instalment.
Still reserving that last star because of my personal opinion, which is that I will not endorse blasphemy (but I have to admit it was much less in the sequel than in Select).
I first need to state I did not read book #1. That being said book #2 did give me enough information that I was not completely lost but just missing a little detailed back story. I liked Julia but didn't really get to know John but in bits and pieces. Angus went back and forth for me but I did end up liking him in the end. Ok - so why the 3 star? The majority of the book was slow. Julia was trying not to use her powers and she was on a trip of self discovery. At about the 70% mark the action did pick up but it was quick and over too fast. Goodreads only had the hardcover edition. I received an ebook at no charge for which I voluntarily provided an honest review.
