Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.
Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.
Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.
According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.

Excellent. Read it for the first time. Queen Elizabeth family is the best where they all go to America.
When Daddy explains all about America to the children you get the feeling he is telling you too.
Beautiful narration. Beautiful story which heart warmingly tells you about America.
And to think Enid Blyton wrote it in the fifties are late forties.
Awesome.

It’s been too long since I indulged in childhood nostalgia and was happy to dive into Are We There Yet?, the Family series by Enid Blyton, a childhood favourite and the author who awoke the reader in me 😊 The Faraway Tree series, The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find Outers, Amelia Jane and the like brought me great joy as a child and continue to do so as an adult. There is an innocence mixed with a charming precociousness to her stories that instantly appeals.
In this series, we follow Mike, Belinda and Ann who along with Mother, Father, Granny go on various adventures that are both delightful & informative. They live in caravans (have always wanted to do this myself!) drawn by their two horses Dave and Clopper and visit the seaside & their Uncle’s farm. They also spend a summer on the river in a houseboat, go on a cruise and travel to America on the Queen Elizabeth no less! All the while they grow independent, learn new skills, conquer their fears and make new friends. They help out with chores and learn to respect nature and their fellow humans.
This was just the light-hearted, comfortingly nostalgic read I needed to kick start 2022 which looks like it’s not quite rid of the Pandemic just yet 😬 Enid Blyton always makes me feel that no matter how tough things seem, they will always get better and end well! We could all do with a dose of her optimism couldn’t we? Dive in and enjoy!
P.S. Am I the only one who snacks copiously and unashamedly while reading Blyton?! The children in her books are always having the most marvellous teas that I can’t help myself 😃

I read this with my kids. What a delightful read. And some pleasantly unexpected awareness of God and prayers on top of it all.
