SPAN combines two novels of the Regan's Reach universe, Orbital Envy which is placed in a time around five years after Regan's Reach and Confluence Point, several years later.

Orbital Envy:
Regan Stein, twenty eight years old and already a legend. Her Hillary Station Orbital project is steaming ahead and all the big nations want in, but on their own terms. She's having none of it, but some countries will stop at nothing to gain control.

The station, or 'The Pipe' as it is popularly known, is growing rapidly, floating between Earth and Moon. It's just moon graffiti to some, while to others it is the hoped for launching pad to the solar system. Are the 'powers that be' prepared to play by Regan's rules?

However, the past comes back to haunt her and when Corans from Gliese 667 turn up to chase her down some on Earth see their opportunity to grab Hillary Station while they can. Will they succeed? And what will Regan, Marin, her team and her AI partner Ham do to restore order?

Is she really just a murderess, a marauder who spread chaos in the peaceful system of another species? Or is there more to the story that her detractors don’t know? Nothing, as usual, will ever be the same.

Confluence Point:
A Coran AI has taken over Dahlia Orbital. When Regan's AI partner Ham dispatches the invader he finds himself the new Orbital Mind, a role for which he is amply equipped . . . but far from suited. It only takes a shade over eight days for him to become bored, mind numbingly bored. So what does a precocious, talented, and somewhat unscrupulous AI do while he waits for the expected second coming of Regan Stein to the Gliese 667C system?
Hmmm . . . second coming . . . now there's an idea.

Meanwhile evil Empress Beria having been exiled from Dahlia has conned her way into the Emperor of Cora's bed. When a drone from the Coran warship Behemoth arrives back from Earth with news about Regan and her son, well, what is a bitter ambitious woman to do with the information?

And when a Mind from a completely different area of the Galaxy arrives at Hillary station to challenge Regan about the actions of her 'Agent' back in Gliese the stage is set for action in all reaches of the Milky Way.

Will Regan's reach be enough to deal with the challenges? Certainly not on her own.

These books are classic science fiction in a series that includes technology, artificial intelligence, androids, interstellar travel, action, politics and mystery. The series tracks sixteen years in the life of the remarkable Regan Stein and her friends. They will entertain you, challenge you and provoke your thinking on everything from the nature of the human heart to the nature of evil.

With the Renaissance of space opera that indie publishing and e-books brought about this is refreshingly different. It is space fiction with lots of action and lots of exotic technology - but not the usual rehash of space battles and Galactic empires.

In almost 60 years of reading science fiction - probably 2000 or 3000 books and at least as many stories in the Golden age of SF magazines - I haven't found a character like Ham very often. He certainly beats "Hal" of 2001 hands-down.

5.0 out of 5 stars: A sorely needed new heroine.
I think this was a terrific beginning to a new series but more importantly a new heroine for the scifi genre. It's also refreshing to read an intelligent scifi novel without galactic space battles or alien earth invasions.
