I have decided to read the Books of Moses and the Gospels before the end of the year. Perhaps this is aspirational at my current reading pace, but I am now off for break and intend to try.

I had read Genesis a while ago before I started graduate school, so likely either in 2017 or 2018. I do know I also read it using the Bible app on my phone at the time, but I recall reading a modern translation. This time I read the King James Version and references a modern translation only when it wasn’t clear (mostly the English Standard Version from 2016).

I remember it being a tedious read the last time o read it, but I honestly enjoyed it this time around. I am bringing almost a second lifetime of experience into this reading and that certainly has an impact. While I am still an agnostic atheist, I can’t help but understand the draw of these words. I don’t see how one can believe them to be true, but I can see how they inspire spirituality. I enjoy researching my own genealogy and wish I knew the stories of my ancestors; so fiction or not, I appreciate this genealogical narration. I also see how this translation began to inspire English language authors. I see these themes and parallels told in countless stories, and I see these archetypical characters and stories echoed through every cultural work I contend with. While I deny the book’s theological sanctity, I cannot deny its cultural influence.

I am looking forward to reading the other four Books of Moses in turn, as I have not read them. Reading and understanding the Bible is indispensable in understanding the Western Canon, the analytical psychology of my favorite psychological theorist (Jung), and like all great works of literature, it can help you understand yourself. I am also looking forward to the stories of Jesus told in the Gospels to see how everything contrasts with the God of Abraham (the storm god Ba’al). I will also eventually read the Gnostic Gospels and the books of the Old Testament not considered canon, especially the stuff implicated in the Dead Sea Scrolls.

The book of Genesis is such an amazing book. I love how it teaches so many life lessons of simply walking with God.
Abraham, who gave up everything and trusted in God implicitly, leaving all behind and travelling to a new country where he owned nothing, not even the land he set his tent up on. Trusting God through childlessness. Trusting Him through war and loss of family. Trusting Him with his precious, only son.
Isaac, who waited patiently for a wife. Prayed patiently for children. Lived patiently waiting for the land to become his. Learned to trust God would provide for him.
Jacob, who endured his father-in-law and his sons. Who learned to trust God when everyone was out to get him and when life went terribly south.
Joseph, who suffered quietly for the right. Who stood strong even when he was unfairly hated and mistreated. Who bore no grudge but forgave freely. Who never lost sight of the Lord.
There is so much to learn about trusting the Lord and simply walking along with Him in this book.
