States of Terror: Volume Three

Rate this book
Bloody Mary. The Donkey Lady. Goatman. Champ. These names and others are whispered across generations as warnings of evil manifestations which dwell on American soil. Some are beautiful and misunderstood, others are nightmarish and unspeakable. Despite their differences, they share one thing in common: they are all part of the shared tapestry of terror which winds its way through time and space, but stays forever rooted in the landscape of the United States.

In this chilling conclusion of the horror anthology trilogy, 17 writers and 28 artists have teamed up to unleash the final beasts of the union upon an unsuspecting population. From the humid swamps of South Carolina to the dark forests of Hawaii, prepare yourself for one last journey through the states of terror, and whatever lurks within them.

I received a copy of this book from the editor for review purposes. This is in no way reflected in my opinion of this anthology. I did not receive any form of compensation for my review.

States Of Terror Volume 3 focuses on the many legends of ghosts and creatures from across the US. The stories in this collection has horrors that I recognized (Bloody Mary, Champ, The Montauk Monster) as well as some that I didn't, but will remember (the Menehune, The Ear-Eater of Jasper County). Some of my favorites were The Best Chicken In Jasper County, I dare you to read this one without laughing. Tropical Paradise Lost will send delicious shivers down your spine. Revised Countermeasures shows what can happen when you mess with Mother Nature. Bloody Mary made me glad she never answered when I was a kid. As with most anthologies, not every story was a winner but most of them were full of creepy goodness. The illustrations that accompany the tales are a fantastic addition to this fun book. Recommended for fans of cryptids, creatures, and ghostly gatherings. A fast and fun 4 star read.

17 cryptozoology stories about a bunch of monsters I've never heard of before by some of the most exciting authors around currently. I was not as impressed as I thought I'd be. I thought the stories were too short or too abstract, not really delving into the monsters that the stories are about. Each section and story came with a piece of companion art from different artists which added a lot to the aesthetic of the anthology.

We are given very bizarre stories about monsters most of us have heard about, but the stories related here? Not so much, these stories come from way out in left field somewhere. The characters presented here are not for the most part likable, which turns out to be a positive. I would compare these stories to a B-movie horror film, not the best but we can't not watch it.

This is the last book of a series written by 17 writers and 23 artists. I found this book a combination of Science Fiction and Horror.
