How Far Would You Go for a Friend? How Far Should You Go? Callie Cooper is living in the wreckage of her life. Abandoned by her fiancé and then discarded by her housemate with the mortgage looming, the situation is looking grim. Everything starts to change when her new roommate enters her life. Margaret seems to be the answer to Callie’s unspoken prayer. Margaret has some demons of her own, though, and they’re catching up to her. A decision to help her friend leads Callie into a bigger world than she ever dreamed possible. A world of lies, truth, unleashed memories and decisions she never imagined she’d have to face. She also learns that sometimes the demons you should dread most are the ones you bring with you.
This book was a nice surprise. The story centres around the main character, Callie, as she tries to keep the house she bought with her ex-boyfriend. A relationship which she had thought was permanent and ended all too soon, leaving her with a large bungalow, she couldn’t afford on her own. She looks into renting out the spare room and has success the first time round, but is left in the lurch again, when the woman, Karen, moves out to move in with her boyfriend, someone Callie doesn’t like but has put up with as her housemate loved him.
After two years of shared living with Karen, she is now back where she was when her boyfriend Jason left her in the lurch. She realises she has few friends or contacts from which to find another tenant, so resorts to running an advert in the paper she works for. She finally gets a reply and after interviews, chooses Margaret, a beautiful looking woman who says she lost her husband a year ago and had moved back with her parents, but wanted her freedom back and some more independence.
Callie’s new housemate, Margaret, brings with her some of her own demons and has a problematic relationship with her parents apparently. Callie’s decision to use her investigative skills from her journalist job, leads her to find out some things she has no answer for. Her coverage of a scandal with the local Mayor also leaves her with mixed feelings and more questions than answers.
She has to face the demons her memories and actions bring to her changing life. Changes she would never have ever imagined possible. Her friendship and closeness to Margaret is severely tested as she changes her approach to life. She also has a couple of unpleasant meetings with Margaret’s father, Alexander, which will lead to an amazing finale.
I really loved the book and how it switches your prospective on life and your own interactions. Your demons will follow you in life wherever you go, it is how you react to these challenges that make the decisions right or wrong, life changing or not.
I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and have gone on to buy this book and the next in the series, to see what happens to Callie and Margaret next. I have freely given my own opinion above.
I really liked the characters and the uniqueness of this book. The story is fantastic and is different from anything else I’ve ever read. Reading this book was the last thing I did before bed last night, and the first thing I did when waking up this morning. I look forward to reading more!
