FBI Profiler Ryker Townsend is a rising star in Quantico’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, but his dark secret could cost him his career. When he sleeps, he has visions of his next case. He sees through the eyes of the dead, the last images imprinted on their retinas. His nightmares are riddled with clues he must decipher to hunt humanity’s Great White Shark—the serial killer.
While he’s investigating the shocking slaughter of a seventeen-year-old girl at Big Bear Lake, the tormented soul of another dead child appears to him in broad daylight. Twelve-year-old Avery Reed reaches out to Ryker—a disheveled and haunted girl, unable to speak—held earthbound out of love for her grief-stricken brother, Sam. Avery’s presence draws Ryker into a sinister conspiracy and she has a desperate message for her brother, if she can make Ryker understand.
Navy SEAL Sam ‘Mozart’ Reed has been haunted by the brutal death of his little sister Avery when he was only fifteen-years old. He vowed to seek and destroy the killer who splintered his family, wiping out everything he’d ever known. Nineteen years later, his darkest wish came true when he found Hurst, her alleged killer, and stopped him from murdering one last time. But when Mozart learns the FBI has reopened Avery’s case, he fears the worst. His SEAL team may have ended the carnage of a serial killer years ago, but for the first time, Mozart has doubts that Hurst had been the man who took Avery’s life. A heartless predator is still butchering young girls. Mozart’s worst nightmare is back with a cruel vengeance.
Bestselling, critically-acclaimed author Jordan Dane’s gritty thrillers are ripped from the headlines with vivid settings, intrigue, and dark humor. Publishers Weekly compared her intense novels to Lisa Jackson, Lisa Gardner, and Tami Hoag, naming her debut novel NO ONE HEARD HER SCREAM as Best Books of 2008. Dane is multi-published in crime fiction thrillers and young adult novels and has books in over seven countries. Jordan shares her Texas residence with three lucky rescue dogs.
FBI Profiler Ryker Townsend has a special gift -- he can see (and sometimes talk to) the dead. When he sees the image of a young girl, he discovers that killer of 12-year-old Avery Reed (whose older brother Navy SEAL Sam "Mozart" Reed and his team took down Avery's supposed killer in Protecting Summer) is still at large.
The Operation Alpha books are essentially licensed fanfiction, so they dramatically vary in quality, but this is one of the best. Mozart is worked into the storyline very organically, and author Dane exploits a weakness in Stoker's original book (why would the same killer target adult women and a pre-teen?) to come up with a compelling plot. It's a great story.
I loved this book!!! Redemption for Avery takes the reader on a dark journey through Ryker Townsend's mind while he investigates the murder of Lily. But his gift -- when he sleeps (and sometimes during his waking hours) he sees lost souls who can't move on -- is complex. If the FBI discovers his secret, he could lose his job, or worse. That element alone intrigued me, but when paired with his lover, Lucinda, it's something you can't tear your eyes away from. And when Avery, a murdered girl whose brother, Federal Agent Mozart, can't let go of due to overwhelming survivors guilt, appears to Ryker his world turns upside down. This is the first crossover book I've read. Mozart is from Protecting Summer, and the way the author played the two characters off each other really added to my enjoyment. If you enjoy psychological thrillers, suspense, with a touch of romance, you won't want to look past this one. Highly recommend!
*I was lucky enough to download an ARC for free when the author put the offer on The Kill Zone, but it had no bearing on my honest, unbias review.
If I could give this book more than five stars I would. This was such an amazing story. It was full of mystery, suspense, love and a mountain of heart wrenching pain that even I felt, long after reading the last page. This was an intense story that develop steadily throughout. It was great to see Mozart but the reason he was there was tragic. The set up was brilliant and the characters were fantastic. Even the bad guys were fantastically well developed throughout the story.
BRAVO Jordan Dane! I love the way this author's mind comes to life on paper!
Received a copy in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated for my review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed is my own.
This book is not for the faint at heart. I confess, that I had to take breaks reading it. This is a compliment to the author's ability and talent . She draws you into the story and you feel you are there with the dead. Her descriptions of FBI Profiler Ryker's nightmares and visions, of Avery's personality and tender heart, and her living Seal brother, Mozart, will touch you and you want to meet them in person. Lucinda, another FBI AGENT and Ryker's love, is also an important and strong character. Even when you feel your heart either aching for the characters or rooting for them you know that a book that does that to you, is worth reading. So, do not hesitant to read this story.

A well written, thought, provoking companion Story to Susan Stoker's "Protecting Summer
OMG, you HAVE to check out this book! It’s like the craziest rollercoaster ride of feelings you’ve ever been on—so intense and heart-pounding that it hits you right in the gut! It’s all about Avery, Sam Reed’s amazing sister, and her gut-wrenching story that first shows up in Susan Stoker’s "Protecting Summer." Trust me, you want to read that one too, because it lays the perfect foundation for all the madness to come.
So, picture this: at the latest crime scene, Avery shows up—no joke—leading Ryker to something so horrifying it hits you like a tidal wave. The drama just keeps piling up, the stakes skyrocket, and her ghostly presence pulls Ryker deeper into this mind-bending nightmare. It’s gruesome, heartbreaking, and honestly, you won’t want to put it down. And then, BAM, her brother Sam reaches out, still feeling broken and desperate, turning everything upside down. When Lucinda, Ryker’s loyal partner, suddenly disappears without a trace? Forget about sleep—his whole world becomes a crazy obsession with finding justice, blending dread and hope in this wild, emotional ride.
And oh my gosh, the twists! They’ll spin your head around—your heart’ll be pounding so hard, tears will be streaming, but amid all the darkness, there’s this tiny flicker of hope, a spark of love that keeps you going. Ms. Dane totally masters this blend of pain and redemption, shining a little light even when the story gets brutally real. Plus, her quotes? So powerful and spot-on—they add this extra layer of emotion that you’ll never forget.
Ryker? He’s basically the coolest—smart, caring, but also a total beast when duty calls. He’s not just the quiet thinker; he’s got this fierce, lion-like energy. He’s got the kind of strength that’s both awe-inspiring and heartbreaking, willing to risk everything for others. Ms. Dane makes him feel super real—flawed but brave, hurting but strong, and totally human. And then there’s Lucinda—his rock. She sees all his dark secrets and still loves him fiercely. Her loyalty and love? Unshakeable.
This story will get under your skin and stay there long after you finish. The ending? Oh wow—it’s hauntingly beautiful, like love and loss dancing together, leaving tears and ache in your chest but also a strange sense of hope. It’s one of those emotional whirlwind books you’ll never, ever forget!
This book continued the story of Sam Reed's sister Avery from Susan Stoker's "Protecting Summer". In that story we thought as did Sam that his sister's killer had been caught but it turns out he was just a fall call for a sadistic pair of killers. Both hiding in plain sight and getting away with everything until Ryker was visited by one of there latest victims.
Ryker meets Avery's ghost at the latest victim's crime scene and she leads him to even more gruesome discovery. Because Avery's ghost appears to Ryker, he contacts her brother Sam Reed and together they work to uncover the mystery and find the real killers.
There were plenty of twists and turns and a tearful but happy ending. Ms. Dane told this story seamlessly and while the subject matter dealt with death she manages to put some light in there as well. Ms. Dane uses quotes that are quite apropos to the story.
Ryker is a fascinating character. He is a cerebral man but not a nerd. He can kick ass if he has too and he has a sensitive side to him. His gift is his self sacrifice and at time it is beautiful and at times it is horrific. She manages to make him believable and very human. His partner Lucinda is the only one who knows his secret and she loves him fiercely despite knowing the truth.
I should have read the first story about Ryker Townsend first but it's not necessary to into this book. I will say though that it is a good idea to read Ms. Stoker's book "Protecting Summer" in order to get the back story about Sam Reed and his sister Avery.
This story will stay with me for a long time. The ending was haunting, yet beautiful. I had tears running down my cheeks by the end of this story. Rest in Peace Avery.
You will need a box of tissues to read this book. I know I had tears in my eyes. Ryker working on Lily's killer, but Avery's ghost makes an appearance he can't get away from. There is a lot of surprises and danger and sorrow in this bIf there was ever a book where u needed a box of tissues this is it. Poor Avery died a horrible death and Sam her brother grieved horribly. He thought the killed had been found but he finds out differently. This book might have started with ook. But my heart went out to Sam (Mozart).
Having loved Susan Stoker's Seal of Protection series, I wasn't sure what to expect from another author using one of her characters to tell a different story...BUT...I couldn't put this book down. Jordan kept true to the heart of Mozart and did justice to telling Avery's story through Ryker and his FBI Team. I've just downloaded another story in this series...and can't wait to start reading it. Loved this book and would highly recommend this to anyone who loves suspense and a thoroughly well written story with a touch of the paranormal. Great find!!
I see all the stellar reviews but I just can't go there. I loved the first RT book and looked for to the 2nd, but it let me down. First, don't understand why it is so short? The plot, with the minister and the crooked cop, could have developed into something great.
Second, the book simply never took off for me. Don't know if will give another book a shot because this one really crashed (for me).
I've not read any of Jordan Dane's books before. This was a little beyond what I was expecting but since I like paranormal stories too and this tied in with Susan Stoker's books, I gave it a shot. Loved that Sam got closure, still concerned for the other victims' families and intrigued enough to read another Ruler and Lucinda novel. I don't recommend this book for anyone who hasn't read Susan Stoker's series. Real good read.
I had actually read this book first and figured out there was a book before this one. I tracked down The Last Victim and read it and then reread this book. I had started the original series and saw this book and the plot was really intriguing. I won't go into the blurb as the synopsis pretty well covers it but I will say, I really enjoyed it and hope she continues the Ryker Townsend series. I have bought the other books already.
Great read!! I enjoyed the flow between the the characters from the other author, Susan Stoker. The story flowed well and had a few twists and turns the I didn’t expect which I enjoyed. If you haven’t read Susan Stoker’s “Protecting Summer,” you definitely should. It’s a great backdrop/prequel to this suspense tale. My only regret is that we don’t get to see the main characters’ relationship blossom a bit more toward the end of the story.
I really enjoy Jordan Dane's writing. This novella is full of great suspense. The beginning has a lot of darkness and dark descriptions that I skipped. Too much for me. The paranormal stuff is usually not my thing, but this was enjoyable and poignant in the story. Enjoyed this book!!
Jordan Dane's Redemption For Avery is a fast-paced paranormal mystery which beautifully aligns with and concludes Sam "Mozart" Reed's search for his little sister's murderer (Susan Stoker's SEAL of Protection Book #4 Protecting Summer). By itself, this book is a jaw-clenching story you will not put down.
Expertly written with some memorable characters. Two characters you'll want to forget at the end. This is a tad bit like a male version of the ghost Whisperer. You'll be on the edge of your seat. A great book!
Another great read in a series that are not connected and can be read in any order. Each book is a standalone but all have a littler Susan Stokrin them. New authors to explore and new worlds to get lost in.....win win.
Not my type of genre but will read anything with Susan Stoker’s characters in it. This one actually touched me at the end. That’s rare but it took a lot of building to get to that point. A lil too long for me.
A little conflicted... cos Mozart had closure and then it was all brought up again... and ( in my mind ) it makes a little bit of a fallacy of his own tale...
But, I did like the premise and the characters... will go and look for the rest of the series now...
You combined my two favorite things. Susan Stoker characters and the paranormal. I have missed these characters so much but now that I have found this series, I will read them all.
This author did an outrageous job of seamlessly weaving this book with Mozart and Summer's story. What a wonderful twist on the ending of their story that I thought was finished. Absolutely amazing!!
Read the first book, now this, totally hooked, excellent from start to finish...no waffling. Definitely recommend and looking forward to more in series.
I wasn’t sure how this book was going to work as the story of Avery was actually Susan stoker book but it was fabulous. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Love Ryder ability. Great thriller
