More to the story is revealed in this fourth book to Davenport House. Nellie Whitmore is accustomed to life as a carefree heiress, but her claim to the family fortune is at risk because of a new heir. Nellie is sent to Britain to be married before word spreads of her changing circumstances. What begins as a luxurious voyage becomes a fight for survival when the ship is caught in the midst of the War, forever changing the people who live to tell about it.
Friendship is kept afloat by telegrams between London and Davenport House. Mary Davenport announces exciting news, and the servants prepare for more changes downstairs. Ethan is anxious to move to Philadelphia, but becomes overworked while the estate is in search of a new groundskeeper. Relationships become strained when the unthinkable shakes the foundation of the house, and the ladies are left to evaluate the risks of keeping secrets.

I am a big fan of Davenport House series and always look forward to the new books when they comes out. I loved books one and two but book three was my favourite - until I read this one, which is number four in the series. The book alternates between the events during the unfortunate journey of Lusitania, when it was torpedoed by a German u-boat, and the events at Davenport House. It is both very emotional and endearing. We met Nelly before but only briefly, and in this book we get to know her better and her story is fascinating! At the same time, it was nice to meet some of the old friends. As always, Marie Silk creates well-developed and relatable characters and interesting story lines. All the historical details are well-researched and fascinating to read about. There is sadness and happiness, and once again I couldn't put the book down. I was happy to find out that there will be book 5 soon - can't wait! I would recommend this series to everyone who enjoys beautifully written historical fiction.
I've enjoyed reading the latest in the Davenport House series. It starts retrospectively with Nellie's voyage on the ill-fated Lusitania and an introduction to the people that she meets on board. The awful tragedy that ensued is well depicted. The plot then moves on to events in England, and also catches up with what was happening over the Atlantic with Mary and her family and friends.
I was hovering between 4 and 5 stars - maybe 4.5. The writing has some elements that might jar with British readers, such as the occasional Americanism in an English character's speech, I would place a well-to-do character's home in west London rather than north-west, and some errors regarding the norms of the peerage. Well done though for using 'marquess' as even sometimes Brits incorrectly use 'marquis', which is a French title. These didn't detract though from the dialogue-based writing that moves the plot along at a good pace, and an overall enjoyable read.
This fourth book is divided into two parts with a unique timeline. We discover Nellie Whitmore's side of the story, beginning with the Easter Parade in New York City, the greatest socialite event of the year. We follow Nellie as she journeys from America to Britain aboard the RMS Lusitania. New characters from London are introduced with a captivating story of their own.
Part II returns to Davenport House, resuming in the exact moment that Book 3 left off. The dynamic of the house changes once again with an announcement from Mary Davenport. Ethan is anxious to move to a new home, but encounters difficulties that stand in the way of his ability to leave. Tragedy hits the house once more, testing the loyalty, friendship, and resilience of its residents. I hope you enjoy the surprises in store in this latest installment of Davenport House.
This book was a refreshing change of pace. I loved hearing Nellie's perspective because I was dying to know how she survived certain events in a previous book, and what happened to her after those events. I really hope we get even more of her story in future books.
More plot twists from within the Davenport House, but this book steps outside the Manor and incorporates the sinking of the Lusitania. The author does a great job with intrigue without making it feel forced or superficial. I love these books!
Don't start ready this series unless you have time!
I have not been able to stop reading these books! They are wonderful and so interesting. I can't put them down. This author is amazing, talented and knows how to write a series of books with so many characters and so many stories going at one time. She is like a carriage drive holding many reigns at one time. At least ten horses!
What is it that keep us connected to our "friends" inside this story. No a question, really, just an observation on my own behalf. The trusts and turns of the convoluted relations. Surprise after surprise. Should there be any more characters, I'll have to take notes. A marvelous story of the eras rules of friendship, coupling, inheritance and generations.

Won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. I never read the first 3 books in the series, I am on the hunt for them. Not a bad YA novel. I wish I had the others to read first so that things made sense but I still enjoyed the plot and look forward to reading more by Marie Silk

The Lusitania, WW1, Catholic and Protestant, servants and upper class....love, honor, respect, tragedy and triumph!!! It is all within these pages set in 1915!
Love following this family and learning all the events that take place in their lives. The marriages that bring such joy the deaths that bring such sorrow, the babies that are still to come.. Can hardly wait to see what happens in the next book !
Lots of drama for these ladies. Must read the entire series to really get to know them. I suppose their actions and reactions are supposed to be typical of the time. Light reading at best.
I enjoyed reading this 4th book in the series. It seems well researched and the characters are well David. I wish the transitions, were either not so rapid or more notice is given.
I love this series of books. I am not much For romance books but this series is so much more. So glad I ordered all 7 in the series. I am on to book 5 today.
This one was almost all about Nellie, one of Mary's good friends. She sailed to England on the Lustania on that fateful day when it was torpedoed by German U-boats.
I have enjoyed the Davenport House saga. The characters and the love is so entwined, they seem almost like family.I am looking forward to the rest of the story.
I liked this book i didnt care for how it started i thought i was reading one of the prior books. I felt lost in the beginning of it but snapped back once the plot thickened.
