2020 - still love this so much, but it does have flaws. It includes potentially harmful gender stereotypes and talks of gaining weight in a negative light, which is unfortunate.
2019 - okay here's the thing... literally nothing happens in this book... but i vibe with it so much... i seriously loved it more than words *cries*
a cute first volume that’s reminiscent of kiki’s delivery service, considering a young witch must move to a new town, but definitely much cornier than kiki’s. still a great start, so far!
Yesterday while browsing one of the many anime/manga newssites I frequent, I saw the news that this manga would be getting an anime adaptation soon. Of course I was curious, the art looked really cute, and the story sounded really fun. So today I decided to check it out.
So what did I think of this manga? It was pretty fun, though I had expected more comedy and more action, and also more magic. For now I think the best is to call this a very easygoing slice of life about a young witch girl moving in to live with her relatives and her being amazed at a lot of things. (She is from another part of the country, so a lot of stuff is new.) And also about her learning to be a witch. So, just a warning to all, if you expect a manga about a girl doing all kinds of magical stuff and has adventures, then turn away and find another one. This isn't the one for you then.
It took me a while to settle into the story and get used to the girl. She is quite the ditz, getting lost everywhere, doing random stuff that startles people, but she is also a kind girl who is happy and who tries her best to become a witch. Throughout the manga we get several "lessons", for instance in the first one she needs a new broom, but we also have chapters about her familiar (a cute cat named Shade), or about her going to make her own veggie garden (and the hilarious stuff that happen there). It is a really relaxing and calm manga, great for people who just need to get away from everything.
The art is pretty decent, while the characters are a bit plain, the backgrounds really make up for it. The art also reminds me a bit of Azumanga Daioh/Yotsuba and Minami-ke, not the same authors, but it does look quite a bit alike. Which isn't bad, I love Azumanga/Yotsuba and Minami-ke's style. :)
Would I recommend this volume? Yes, I would. It is a fun, relaxing manga, perfect if you just need to get away from the hecticness of real life.
A witch wants to be more normal and goes to live with non-magic family. She does not fit in or understand how to act around kids her age, and she’s still learning magic. Her magic sister comes to visit her. Cozy and relaxed.
Flying Witch is a slow-roll situational comedy slice-of-life. It takes what would otherwise be a surreal premise (a girl living with her relatives who is learning to be a witch) and makes it seem perfectly ordinary. It's straightforward, and I like that.
You won't find yourself laughing out loud, but this will make you smile and maybe snicker a bit. It's a good read, and you'll probably enjoy it if you're in the mood for something light and lighthearted.
It's not bad, it's just terribly bland. Slice of life stuff is really dependant on the charm of it's characters and the ability of the author to make something mundane seem larger than life or exciting. Neither of which is found here.
The characters don't have much that really make them stand out, and the writing has no charm or whimsy to it. I'm willing to give it one more volume, as the sister and more magical elements finally make an appearance in the last two chapters, which breathes much needed life into the title. Let's hope there's more of that going forward.
Makoto Kowata is a teenage witch 🧹 who has moved in with her rural cousins so she can get the hang of her abilities and she makes a new friend in her new school and brings a handful of magical surprises.
For a fantasy manga about witches, it’s very laid back and even nicely mellow. Our Makoto is definitely not like “Sabrina” but a more friendly and eccentric Luna Lovegood, while being more surprising as the manga progresses. For now, a well paced start to a story about a very different kind of witch. B+ (83%/Very Good)
Struggled between 3 and 4 stars. If I borrowed it from the library I probably would've given it 4 stars, but since I shelled out coin for this, I'm inclined to say 3. It wasn't exciting, but it was... hm, cute enough, but uneventful. I think I'll go ahead and buy the next one though, just hoping it'll pick up a bit.
This is a really cute story about a teenaged witch who is learning more about life alongside her cousins and her familiar Chito.
The story itself is very relaxed as we follow Makoto through her day to day life, trying to get a herb garden started, going to school, making friends, learning to be a witch, you know. All the normal teen stuff.
Chito the cat is adorable (and so is Kenny the cat) and I wish I could talk to my own cats like that!
I usually prefer more action packed manga (hence my initial star rating of 3) but I will definitely continue on with this series when I'm in the mood for something relaxing and cute.
This was just what I needed such a breath of fresh air from all the Shonen Manga I've been reading. This had some very funny moments and made me smile throughout. If you're a fan of the Ghibli movie Kiki's Delivery service then this is for you, can't recommend this Slice of life comedy feel good manga enough even after the first volume. :)
This was pretty cute, and reminds me a bit of Kiki's Delivery Service. Makoto has a black cat, is a witch who has left home to grow, and she is not a particularly gifted witch. A simple slice of life in a rural area with a bit of magic tossed in for fun! Check out my YouTube channel for bookish videos and monthly wrap ups!
Segi meong meong, mantap.
Sekali lagi, side dish yg enak. 3.25 stars, rounded to 3. Tunggu vol.2nya kalo mau kasik 4 stars.
Não sei o que estava à espera deste livro, mas não era isto. Estava à espera de um Kiki’s delivery service ou Eva Evergreen e acabei por não ter isso nem algo parecido. O primeiro livro não me conquistou.
Just a cozy lil SOL story about Makoto who's a witch in training. A very bad one at times lol. If you want to read a simple story with witches, adorable familiars,a MC with a bad sense of direction and bad decision making skills then I highly recommend it!
Nothing really happened in this book after page 7 but it has a cozy atmosphere and cute characters. It's not THE manga series you need to check out ASAP, but I still really liked it and had a nice time reading it.
Bien mignon ce petit manga avec la découverte de cette jeune sorcière Je me suis pris au jeu et j’attends que le 2nd tome soit dispo à ma médiathèque !
I picked this up partly cause I liked the premise and partly as an easy way to test out reading manga on my e-ink Kindle. It was definitely a success for the latter, but for the former it was just kinda alright.
The story is about a young witch leaving home and going out into the world. So given how much I like Kiki’s Delivery Service, of course I was going to check this out. There are definitely some similarities, with the protagonist’s major act of magic in the first chapter being broom flying and her companion being a black cat. Though this one doesn’t speak English, so only Makoto and not the audience can understand her. And rather than starting a business like Kiki, Makoto largely has no stakes slice of life adventures and goes to high school so she has something to fall back on if the whole witch thing doesn’t work out.
I liked the artwork and I do feel like the creator is doing a good job of setting up a useful cast of characters. Makoto is living with her cousins, so we’re introduced to them, their parents, and a few other locals. Plus the chapters tend to have some supernatural occurrence, from Makoto flying to her trying to gift a new friend a mandrake. And the character design for the Harbinger of Spring was neat, and lead to some fun interactions with the younger cousin.
But the thing is that nothing really happens in these stories. There are no major stakes, which is not itself a problem, but it doesn’t feel like there’s much else to grab my interest. The stories are cute but that’s really the most I can say for them. Even when Makoto’s sister shows up in the last chapter and they accidentally summon a whole murder of crows, this is just a silly thing that happens. The story doesn’t have much weight to it and I’m not left feeling like I need to go check out the next volume.
I think if I were reading this in a Japanese magazine as one of a number of serializations, it would be a fun bonus to whatever I was actually interested in. But standing on it’s own, it just doesn’t manage to do enough to make me feel invested in the characters or world. I like witch stuff, but this one just can’t cast a spell on me.
This is the first in a manga series that follows a young witch as she comes into her powers.
I'm honestly very sad that I didn't love this. I felt that not enough happened in the first volume to hook me into the story, and there were also a lot of problematic lines regarding weight and fat-shaming. There was also a line saying that the main character owns a lot of things because it's "just right for a girl. I also didn't like any of the characters and I felt like there was no plot. Like at all.
The only thing I enjoyed was the art and the cat so unfortunately, I didn't love this.
