Monky
This favorite picture book describes the unusual events that happen when a toy monkey is separated from his young owner. The shimmering watercolors bring to life the enchantingly oddball characters the monkey encounters. These include a mouse colony that uses the monkey's underwear to swing through their house in the bottom of a tree; a hedgehog family that falls asleep with him; and the magpie that steals the monkey away to its nest.

Ik ga niet alle kinderboeken die ik krijg reviewen, maar voor Monkie maak ik een uitzondering.
Dat ik dit niet kende! Zo'n ontroerend boekje. Zonder woorden, met alleen plaatjes dus de mama's en papa's kunnen hun fantasie erop loslaten. Leg het onder de kerstboom voor jezelf (die hoeft pas weg na Driekoningen en cadeautjes uitpakken kan ook nog ná Boxing Day). Trigger warming: je kan gaan huilen. Kusjes.

A wordless picture book, about a boy who loses is monkey and finds it again later.
As picture books go, this is a very good one. The story is simple to follow and it invites the reader to create whatever plot it seems to better fit the drawings. And it does so every time you pick up the book. Although I'm a little stuck in making the crow a villain.
Perhaps more suited to children after 1 or 2 years old, the review of a 10 month old girl goes like this:
" I like to turn the board pages allot. At first that was all I liked. Then I started to notice the big pictures. Specially the one where the crow watching the porcupines. Now, I also enjoy the one about the baby porcupines playing with the monkey. I laugh every time that picture shows up. I tend to notice the pictures with strong green colors. The ones with soft beautiful pastel colors don't captivate my attention... yet!"

A beautiful wordless story, brilliantly constructed. A toy monkey gets lost. The animals of the wood interact in their own way with it until the toy eventually finds it place back into the arms of the kid that lost it.
I really liked the fact that the story evolves in a very organic way. There are a series of happy coincidences but no miraculous resolution. It sort of gives hope that even without fairies, fantastic beasts or any sort of wizardry, a lost toy can still find its way back to its owner.
The illustrations are much in the style of comic books, with larger images for the scenes that require time and more exploration, smaller panels for things that happen more rapidly or with a lot of excitement involved.

Een tekstloos prentenboekverhaal over de omzwervingen van knuffelaap Monkie, die na een val van de fiets bij allerlei dieren terecht komt, voordat hij weer veilig in de kinderarmen belandt waar hij thuishoort.
Het nodigt uit je eigen verhalen te bedenken bij de illustraties. Zo kun je met je kinderen of kleinkinderen en eigen wereld creëren met hun favoriete knuffeldieren.

Over een kleuter die zijn favoriete knuffel kwijtgeraakt.
Zowel onze kleuter als ik waren even echt ongerust over hoe deze ging aflopen. Teken dat het goed is uitgewerkt; het raakte ons maar al te goed.
Zonder enige tekst, maar met tekeningen waar we ons met gemak in inleefden en waarin het verhaal zich zeer helder ontplooide. Mooi gedaan. Een beetje eng dus, maar ook met veel affectie erin.
'27e druk' zag ik in de colofon. Terecht.

I am currently visiting my daughter who had this book which we gave to her when she was a child.
My daughter used to have a toy monkey which travelled everywhere with her and like the child in the story, she lost Monkey. We replaced her monkey with this book. I'm pleased to see that at the age of 42 she still has it and it is being enjoyed by her children.
In the original edition of the book there are no words. The story is told very clearly through the pictures. No words are needed. If you can find a copy, I trust your children will enjoy it as much as mine did.

Fraai prentenboek zonder tekst. Ik kreeg dit boek in de stapel kinderboeken als donatie voor mijn minibieb, omdat Jeanet in haar blog over dit boek schreef omdat het in de Grote Vriendelijke 100 staat dacht ik laat ik het even ‘lezen’ voordat ik het in mijn minibieb zet. Lief verhaal over een Knuffel-aap die kwijtraakt maar gelukkig uiteindelijk na veel omzwervingen weer bij zijn kleine eigenaar terugkomt. Ik moest meteen denken aan de keer dat mijn dochter bij de AH ‘boekjes’ ging lezen en haar knuffel naast zich neerlegde. Ze zal zo’n jaar of drie geweest zijn en we spraken af dat ze daar mocht zitten terwijl ik boodschappen deed, als ik naar de kassa ging dan zou ik de rij bij de tijdschriften nemen. Zo ging het dus, maar ze was zo verdiept in de ‘boekjes’ dat toen ik haar waarschuwde ze heel haar knuffel vergat. We brachten de boodschappen naar de auto, gingen daarna nog naar twee winkels en bij het in haar stoeltje zetten in de auto merkte ze dat ze haar ‘pepe’ kwijt wat. Inwendig was ik boos, want eigenlijk had ik liever dat de knuffel het huis niet uit kwam, maar goed dat was dus deze keer wel gebeurd… ik vroeg haar of ze een idee had waar de knuffel kon zijn en ze dacht meteen aan het ‘boekjes’ lezen bij de AH. En ja hoor toen we bij de tijdschriften kwamen zat haar ‘pepe’ nog steeds op een stapel tijdschriften waar ze ‘m had achtergelaten. Toen was het duidelijk, ‘pepe’ blijft of thuis of blijft in de auto liggen.

Monkie is een prentenboek uit 1986 en bestaat enkel uit illustraties. Monkie is het verhaal over een jongen die zijn lievelingsknuffel kwijtraakt. Zijn aap wordt door meerdere dieren meegenomen en uiteindelijk zwaar versleten gevonden door een poppendokter. Deze poppendokter 'lapt' de aap op en verkoopt hem in zijn winkel, waar de jongen zijn aap weer terugvindt.
Ondanks dat het boek uit de jaren 80 komt, wat je ook wel terug kunt zien in de illustraties, is het boek nog wel 'van nu'. Ik was gecharmeerd van de tertiaire kleuren die de illustrator heeft gebruikt, wat wellicht ook gebruikelijk is voor de jaren 80.
Dat het prentenboek geen teksten bevat gaf voor mij vooral een meerwaarde aan het boek. Enerzijds omdat het verhaal ook duidelijk is zonder de tekst maar ook omdat hierdoor de illustraties er duidelijker uit springen.
Een nostalgisch boek die elk kind een keer gelezen moet hebben.

Este es un libro álbum, de aquellos que no tienen texto, ¡Ninguna palabra! Solo imágenes. La experiencia para el niño, o adulto, tendrá mucho que ver con la propia narración mental o en voz alta; de este modo, la interpretación está a merced del lector. Y esto lo disfruté mucho. Edad desde los 5 años.

Er staan alleen maar plaatjes in het boek. De plaatjes zijn een beetje ouderwets maar het is ook wel een boek uit 2007. Ondanks dat er geen tekst in staat, is het verhaaltje wel duidelijk. Ook komen er dieren in voor. Dat vind ik goed voor een prentenboek omdat kinderen zich vaak beter inleven in dieren. Het boek geeft kinderen de kans om hun fantasie te gebruiken.

Grafische boeken zijn ook boeken!
En dit is een emotioneel, liefdevol getekend boek over een gelukkige hereniging. Gisteren Monkie uit de kast gepakt en de hele avond nagedacht en geglimlacht over het boek. Er zit veel wijsheid in boeken die oorspronkelijk misschien voor kinderen bedoeld zijn, maar die iedereen zou kunnen/moeten lezen.

I like wordless picture books — they allow the adult and the child to 'read' the story together, and it's often surprising to hear what the kids come up with that I missed.
A couple key pictures are kind of hard to figure out. They might have been clearer if they'd been a little larger.

I am not usually one for wordless picture books but this one wowed me. It’s about a boy who looses a monkey and then ends up finding it later. Something that children can relate to often. The story flows but also allows for readers to imagine and create their own story as they read. Overall a well made book!

Illustrations in this book edge on the disconcerting. Who wants to imagine their beloved stuffy being destroyed by wild animals?
Those who are familiar with Ungerer and the dark side of children’s books would feel at home with this tale.

Een mooi tekstloos verhaal voor kinderen wat heel herkenbaar is. Je lievelingsknuffel ineens kwijt. Mooi illustraties, die misschien een update kunnen gebruiken.

Este álbum sin texto, narrado magistralmente con imágenes tiernas que contrastan con el tenso relato del paso de un dueño a otro, acaba con un azaroso pero feliz reencuentro.
