In Broken, Jasmine, a foster child, prepares for a special day.
We may dream of childhood as a state of joy and innocence, but children inhabit the same world adults do. In this series of short stories, Maya Goode explores childhood with an unfiltered lens. From abuse, mental illness and suicide to first love and unending compassion.
This story has all the things to be a great one if it was longer and the plot was allowed to develop more. This is the kind of story that frustrates me and sometimes makes it difficult for me to love short stories. I felt so much for the character but I wanted to know more details of how they got to where they were in the story. Not getting that information was down right frustrating. On the upside, the righting is really good. I connected quickly with the little girl, Jazmine the main character. However not so much with the other character. This is collection and makes for a nice third story so I'd recommend it if you're curious to read and compare the stories. For the moment, the Raft is winning for as the best. I still have Emily and Odd Habit left to read.
Great read! I wish there had been another chapter!
I really enjoyed reading this short story. I have followed Maya for years on social media. She is a very interesting character and her writing aligns with the depth and complexity of journey that she is. I really would have enjoyed reading more about the young character’s life as she moved through the foster care system and whether her mother’s mental health improved.
