It took some doing to get this book. when I saw it on Amazon, I was instantly intrigued. First I tried the library. No go. Then I tried Inter Library Loan. No Luck. So I broke down and bought a used one for one cent, yes, one cent. With postage and handling it came to $4.00 but worth every penny. This is the story of three generations of women and the men they love, all entwined around a Gothic mansion in England. Murder, intrigue, witchcraft, it has it all and I loved it from beginning to end. If you like Victoria Holt. Mary Stewart, etc. you will like this. Highly recommended.
A reread of this book from my teen years. Not as great as I remember, but one of my early reads that turned me on to the dark novels of Rebecca and Jane Eyre.
Reccd by a friend, the Rommany is an amazing novel by Florence Hurd. With not one or two but THREE Gothic Heroines, dealing with trans-generational search of a Macguffin that no one is sure actually exists. But that won't stop people from coming to Rommany, prowling where the ghosts linger, murderers sneak and thieves snoop around.
With a totally worth reading, a good ending and great premise, Rommany is an underrated gem. Will explore author's other works (of which there are plenty).
The cover and description really do make you want to jump in the story, but it's honestly very different - less about cool evil women doing things and more about "real" written nineteenth century heroines in various circumstances and what they do about it. Very enjoyable
This is the best gothic book I have ever read. I loved it so much, I read it 3 or 4 times since 1994 and still own a copy. It's written in 3 parts from the perspective of three different women in the same family and comes together masterfully. Florence Hurd has always ranked very high in my list of favorite gothic romance authors.
