Fae Hunters #1

The Consort

Rate this book
Summoned to the Royal Palace of Faerie, Liandra arrives full of hope—only to learn that Florian, the Summer Prince, has purchased her as his annual consort. The price charged by her father? A horse.

Fleeing through the veil into the human world, Liandra knows she must not only escape the prince but also the fabled Fae Hunters, ruthless faery warriors whose job it was to track escaped members of the fae and return them to Faerie dead or alive.

Falconer, eldest son of Autumn, gave up his seat on the throne of the Autumn Court to become Captain of the Fae Hunters. Setting up his base in New Orleans, Faulkner—as he now calls himself—runs The Hunt Club, a fantasy nightclub that makes the most of the fae’s illusion magic and serves as a hangout for off-duty Hunters. All is going well…until Prince Florian stalks in, demanding the return of his lost consort.

Faulk takes the case, but soon finds his duty at odds with his heart when he’s ordered to capture Liandra, the grown-up version of a shy, awkward girl he remembers from his youth. Can Faulk turn Lia over to a certain death at the hands of the prince, or will he risk a war with Faerie in order to save her?

From the author of the award-winning Sentinels of New Orleans urban fantasy and Penton Legacy paranormal romance series comes the first in a new novella series, The Fae Hunters.

I originally read and reviewed this title as part of the Dark Secrets: A Paranormal Noir Anthology (original review found here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...).

My review from September 2015:

Faulkner Hearne is the captain of the Fae Hunters, a group who lives in the human realm, tracking down the Fae who cross over without permission. When he is commanded by the Prince of the Summer Court to locate his newest consort, Liandra, Faulkner isn’t certain he’ll be able to turn her over to face the horrors that await her.

As a huge fan of Ms. Johnson’s Sentinels of New Orleans series, I completely enjoyed seeing the Winter and Summer Fae Princes again. I enjoyed that the pair knew each other from youth; how he remembered her. Since I love the world and series, this was an enjoyable, quick read; however I’m not sure how it would play out if I hadn’t read the series. Overall, an entertaining paranormal romance.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Small nice short-story but WAY too short and it's a pity ...
With a whole book, the characters and the story could have been more developed and it could have been more interesting (I found that the relationship between Lia and Faulk was too fast to build and I wanted to know more about Princess Kieran !!)
In short, a little bit disappointed even if I still love the universe.
I love her other books set in New Orleans. The conflict, of this story, is set in the Fae world which overflows into the human world where Fae Hunters hunt down fae illegally in the Human world. This incorporates everything I love about a good Fae story: politics, a smart and determined woman (who may not have powerful magic or kick-ass fighting abilities), and ruthless characters. However, there is a place for love and integrity.
I only wish it was a little longer so that the love story could develop a little be more and that there were more in this series.
Nice short. This is an off shoot of her full Sentinal series. I wouldn't mind seeing a book 2 for this series. Some of the same characters and a same world building but done well.
A sweet addition to the Sentinels of New Orleans
The Consort is a stand alone romance set in the world of the Sentinels of New Orleans. The Fae Prince of Autumn, Faulkner, heads the Fae Hunters responsible for apprehending escapees from Faery. Lia is the daughter of a metal working Fae peasant, who thinks that her summons to the queen's court is in regards to the unique jewelry that she makes. When she arrives, she learns that her father has sold her to the cruel, callously evil Florian, Faery Prince of Summer, to be his annual consort and palace plaything. His plans for her sound like a fate worse than death, so she flees Faery to the human city of New Orleans. There she finds the Hunter assigned to return her to the vile Florian is none other than the man she knows as Falconer, the man she has loved from afar since childhood. Can Faulkner thwart Florian's plans for the woman he is attracted to, or will he be forced to return her to Faery and the certain death that awaits her at Florian's hands? Read the Consort to find out!
I am a huge fan of the Sentinels of New Orleans. I would recommend the series to readers wholly like Jim Butcher, Patricia Briggs, Charlaine Harris, and Benedict Jacka.
It was a decent enough peek into a new PNR series although I thought the relationship suffered from an insta-love trope that perhaps couldn't be avoided given the length of the novella. I did like the groundwork for the world and the long arc, though.
The book is about the fae, this one was set between both Faery and New Orleans and I suspect the central location in the series will be "The Hunt Club" which is a club owned and operated by a Prince of Autumn who renounced his throne to lead the Fae Hunters. The Fae Hunters are tasked with hunting fae who are in the human world without royal permission. In the long arc there is a battle brewing between the Prince of Summer and his brother the Prince of Winter over who will become the heir to the High Queen. I can see the "one-romance-per-book" format typical of PNR will probably be about Fae Hunters.
It wasn't bad for a novella length introduction to a new PNR series.
The Consort: A Fae Hunters Novella I. Loved. This. Book! With a Kindle Unlimited subscription, I read it for free but it's definitely going on my keeper shelf. I want more books from this series. Like now! Falconer/Faulkner and Lia are my catnip. I'll be watching for the second book. My only complaint is that the book is a true novella--while it tells the story perfectly, it's too short. I wasn't ready to let go of Faulk and Lia. And Romy. And Faulk. Yes, I think he might make my Top Book Boyfriend list. If you love unsparkly fae, New Orleans, and the fae living in our world, go forth and read this book!
I LOVE IT!!! Suzanne Johnson never disappointed me but this is simply fabulous, even if you have never heard of her series you can follow this easily and it just leave you wanting for more.
You have the action, humour some suspense and romance... just perfect I really liked Liandra, she is only half fae but she is strong willed and intelligent and couregous. Faulk... i just want to read more of him and his team it’s a wonderful treat that works wonderfully aside from the main series but i do hope we will see more of the characters we met here either in other shorts or in the main series but i want more^^
This started out well, but about midway disintegrated into a sappy, Harlequin romance.
update 2/23/22
So forgettable that I forgot I'd read it. Unfortunately, it did not improve with time. Going down to one star.
