In Victorian London, Jennie Quinn, a reporter is working undercover at an Inn as part of her determination to discover who murdered her informer..
Former Police Inspector Matthew Colton, now a member of a notorious criminal gang crosses her path. But what is the connection between the gang, the death of her informer and the further deaths of other females..
I enjoyed the story a lot and liked the portrayal of the characters. I also liked the style of the writing and I am hoping there will be more stories with these characters. A romantic mystery, with not too much romance thankfully.

Intriguing elements and dark mysterious hero but only given a promise of that never delivered. Story plods along with not much happening but repeated scenes and romance drags out only to be given a few bedroom scenes without much relationship depth.
Tempted to read the next in series though because of promise of author.

This novel is full of murder, mayhem, intrigue, and of course romance. I enjoyed reading it because the story is very good. Colton is my favourite character in this book. He is a man with many secrets, some not good. Jennie knows that she should stay away from him but he might lead her to the answers she is seeking. They are world's apart from each other but in this moment they're together. Colton is determined to find all of Jennie's secrets while she is looking for some answers herself. Both are in danger if the wrong people found out the truth about them. But both are stubborn and not ready to give up their respective quests.
It's quite an adventurous tale set in Victorian London. I'm sure historical fiction fans will enjoy it.

When a Lady Deceives (Her Majesty's Most Secret Service, Book 1) by Tara Kingston is an intriguing Victorian Romance set in 1890 England. WOW! What an intriguing introduction to a new and what promises to be an impressive series.

Jennie Quinn, a tenacious, undercover journalist/reporter, who employs deception to seek justice for an informant who was murdered for the information she carried. She is drawn into a seductive game of cat and mouse, with known, and powerful criminals. She disguises herself as a barmaid, working in a taven, in a rough part of London, "loose lips talk and tell secrets".
Where she meets....the impressive, enigmatic former, disgraced lawman, Matthew Colton. Branded as a killer, a ruthless criminal where he becomes the Lieutnant of a ruthless underground predator. But he holds secrets of his own. Things are not as they seem. Secrets, deception and lies could get them both, him and Jennie killed.

Fast paced, heart-pounding, thrills and chills Victorian Romance. The characters are engaging, flawed, enigmatic, intruiging as well as,captivating. The storyline is unique, intriguing, impressive, and very tantalizing. A Jack the Ripper type of suspense with many twists and turns and more dangerous than dynamite.

Filled to the brim with suspense, vengeance, mystery, danger, passion, betrayal, challenges and very intriguing. WOW! I was definitely entranced by "When a Lady Deceives", I couldn’t put it diwn, once I started reading. Emotionally charged, powerful and compelling!

Readers will be drawn in from the first page to the last and beyond. Readers will be faced with challenges, angst, turmoil, the promise of love, finding peace, healing, and a HEA. A most tantalizing and mesmerizing adventure!

Fans of mystery, suspense, passion, finding justice and romance, will wish to pick up "When a Lady Deceives" for their reading pleasure. A must read, Victorian Romance! Highly recommended! I can't wait to read more of Bertram, Sophie, Douglas, Millie, Mr. Campbell, and of course, Jennie and Matthew. What an awesome, amazingly intriguing, compelling, and multi-faceted, story!

Ms. Kingston, has written a brillant, masterfully written Victorian Romance!

2.5 stars. I would have rated it higher if it didn't take half the page count for something (anything) to happen!

My Better worded review:
Tara Kingston’s newest release When a Lady Deceives features a clever, intelligent woman matched with a man whose true heart and motives are masked by darkness. Sounds like a real page turner to me and yet I found myself putting the book down more often than not. With little to no major character or plot development for practically half of the book I was bored instead of intrigued by the story.

Investigative reporter Jennie Quinn has always thrown herself both physically and emotionally into her stories. When her source of information on the local crime boss Claude Harwick is found dead Jennie makes it her mission to uncover the killer while still meeting her deadline for The Herald. Hoping to find another inside source, Jennie works undercover as a barmaid at the tavern run as a front for Harwick’s organization. For a few days she manages to stay unnoticed, making friends with her coworkers and keeping her ears open for any news about the murder. However, a spilled drink on the wrong henchman gets her some unwanted attention from Matthew Colton, Harwick’s right hand man and main enforcer.

This is my first read by Tara Kingston and it was very interesting. The book has suspense, mystery, romance and nice characters. Jennie is a reporter who is working undercover trying to find out who killed her informant. Matthew is the bastard son of Lord Winthrop and before being recognized by him ,she used to live in the slums. Before becoming the head enforcer for Claude Harwick, he worked for Scotland Yard.

Both characters are complex and I liked that she is different from the other reads of that time. She works and loves what she does. The book was a little slow at the beginning but later it became more interesting.

I like a good, snappy intrigue and this book has it, plus some steamy chemistry. Jennie Quinn is the kind of woman I like to see in novels - independent and goal oriented. As an undercover reporter, she is not perfect, which gets her into more than a few dangerous situations, but Matthew Colton, a former Yard Man, now working for a criminal isn't all he's supposed to be. When the two end up together, time after time, sparks fly! I wasn't expecting the ending. I received an Advanced copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

What an incredible way to start a series. You have mystery, murders, threats, dark alleyways, secrets, underlying passion, protective instincts on steroids, vindication, and love. Ms. Kingston has wrapped all of this up in a story of revenge and doing the right thing.

Virginia Jeanette “Jennie” Quinn is a reporter looking for the killer of her informant and a way to bring the killer to justice. She is clever, quick minded, pretty, cultured and has many secrets she wants to keep to herself. She starts out with an attitude of smugness that quickly changes as she finds herself pulled deeper into a world she truly was not born into ad in some ways unprepared to deal with. She is NOT your normal Victorian woman.

Matthew Colton is the son of an Earl, born on the wrong side of the sheets, spent a portion of his younger life in St. Giles, but brought into his father’s home being given some advantages. He has a good sense of right and wrong, he is seeking vengeance for having had his life ruined and has sunk to depths he is convinced he will never pull himself out of. He has become the enforcer for a crime lord, one that he wants to see pay for the evil he has spread throughout London.

Jennie and Matthew are brilliant together. They push each other and they have a shared passion that could probably light up London. They each have their own way of getting information and once they put their heads together they are stiff competition for the evil they are up against. Jennie brings out the good in Matthew that has become buried, but he believes he does not deserve her and she deserves better than what he has become.

The story is filled with tension, both from the bad guys and between Jennie and Matthew. Obviously different tension, but it keeps you turning pages. The interactions between Matthew and Jennie are fast paced and they have a charm to them, even with the occasional sarcasm from both. Jennie is able to, unwittingly bring out the protective side of Matthew and that helps to return a portion of his humanity back to the surface.

The antagonists are fascinating. They have depth, nastiness and pull you along wanting great harm to come to them. There are several surprises that will have you groaning then cheering. The other secondary characters that are there to aid our couple are charming, Sophie, Bertram, Douglas and Campbell keep reminding you that all is not lost and evil.

A brilliant start to a series. In the end you will see where the series is going and I am excited to see the further adventures Ms. Kingston has in store for us. Ms. Kingston is a new to me author that is now on my To Be Watched list. You will enjoy this story and it is a great weekend read.

London, 1890. In Victorian London, reporter Jennie Quinn employs deception as a weapon. Going undercover to seek justice for a murdered informant. The books start with Jenny finding Mary McDaniel, her informant, with her throat cut in an alley. Jenny was to be given the diary Mary had kept whilst mistress to a powerful criminal. Enigmatic former lawman Matthew Colton is as dangerous as he is clever, but the passion in his kiss is too tempting to resist. Jennie aches to trust him, but she will not abandon her quest for the truth.
Colton is a man with secrets of his own. Thirsting for vengeance, the disgraced Scotland Yard detective has infiltrated the criminal world he’s vowed to destroy & is now his relative’s lieutenant, however he knows his cousin Hardwick would kill him with no qualms. Jennie intrigues him, even as she breaks down the barriers around his heart & he would give his life to protect her.
Jennie is a strong character & is drawn to Matthew, but knows she shouldn’t trust him.
The story is well paced & keeps you turning the pages. The author gives you a snap shot of life in late Victorian London from the Savoy to St Giles, the murky life behind the respectability of the late nineteenth century. This is the first of he author’s books I’ve read but won’t be the last.
If you like mystery, intrigue, deception, lies &, of course, romance then, you’ll enjoy this book – I did & I hope there are more in the series to follow

This story has solid writing and good characters, but it seemed like there was entirely way too much repetition. I enjoyed the banter (and the romance) between Matthew and Jennie - and the conclusion was something I did not expect - however it was the getting there that lost points with me.

Yes these are both head-strong characters, I did not need to read about him "ordering" her to do something (or ordering her NOT to do something as the case so often was) and her defying him every few pages. I get it. He worries for her. He is protective of her. And she feels as though she can take care of herself. Honestly, it got boring after awhile. Don't get me wrong, the author did a wonderful job of putting everything together and weaving a complex and intriguing story, and I do think there is potential here for the author to do a "backstory" of sorts focusing on Jennie and some of her other exploits. As well as for them to take the "new endeavor" they mentioned and expand upon that as well.

Overall, I am certain that this book will appeal to those who enjoy a historical romance with a dash of mystery, and I would read more from this author.

Jennie is a reporter undercover to try and figure out who murdered her informant. Not much is said of Jennie's family other than they are adventurous and supportive. Matthew, the bastard son of Lord Winthrop, formerly an Inspector from Scotland Yard, is the head enforcer for Claude Harwick. Matthew spent some of his formative years in the slums, before his father acknowledged him and he came to live with him.
This was good. Both characters were interesting and had layers. I liked that Jennie had a profession and was an intelligent good, strong character. I enjoyed the mystery of Matthew; did he really murder his partner and become a henchman, or is this a ploy? It does take some time to take off, after a slow start, the last half is much better.
Some formatting issues and a few continuity issues I noticed, but neither detracted from the story.

First book in a promising new series!

review 1

Cover - Really beautiful! Catching colors with a sensual couple very fitting for a Victorian book.
Plot- This was a good plot. Full of mystery and suspense, this book kept me guessing and wanting more until the end. The author written style was very cohesive without any weak points.
Characters- Colton is a mouth-watering hero. A bit dark and dangerous, he was really protective and bossy. On the other hand, Jennie was the perfect match for him, because she didn't let him get past with much. A bit reckless in her quest for vengeance she is a good heroine for such suspenseful novel.
Heat/Romance- I like how the romantic aspect of the story was portrayed by the author. Jennie is different for a woman of that time and Colton totally understood her, even though he was the protective type, he accepted her quest. Their chemistry was also great.
Freshness- There is a feeling of new in this historical romance. The female character has been portray very different than most women of that time are usually represented. I like this unusual aspect.
Addictiveness- This was an easy book to read and it was had to let go.

Review 2

Plot - I had some trouble with the pace. It was a bit slow and then really fast. I also found a bit repetitive.

You MAY buy this book because you enjoy a good romance, you SHOULD buy this book because you like historical reads, you MUST read this book if you are ready for a fantastic new series to follow!!!

My Thoughts:

This was my first taste of this author's works and it left me wanting more.
This is a very intriguing story with a lot of mystery and a great deal of violence. I usually do not go for this type of story preferring milder violence and sexy, however the author made you want to keep reading.
Because of the violent nature of the story it may not be to your taste, but it is very well written and the truth to the mystery is not revealed until almost the end of the book, so it keeps your interest.
I would give the development of the characters and the story line a 4 star rating.

A female investigator trolling the underworld to uncover criminal activity would be dangerous today, but in Victorian times it was almost suicidal. Jennie Quinn is investigating an underworld boss when her informant is murdered. She is determined to bring the villain to justice, even if it means putting her own life in danger.
Matthew Colton is the main muscle to a very dangerous man. ( Or is he?) He has to discipline many who get out of line. There us something about the new barmaid that is ruffling his instincts. Is she in danger, or is she just more trouble.
An intriguing mystery set in Victorian times. Our heroine is a very brave young woman, with maybe a little too much self confidence. Our hero has his own secrets to protect, and his reasons for being involved in the criminal underworld.
I was drawn in on the very first page. I can see the possibility of many more stories involving these wonderful characters . I loved every page.

WHEN A LADY DECEIVES, Tara Kingston’s first book in HER MAJESTY’S MOST SECRET SERVICE series, is a keeper!

Reporter Jennie Quinn is thrown into the murder investigation of an informant, who worked at a tavern run by a villainous criminal she suspects had her source killed. Jennie goes undercover and meets Colton, a former detective hunk. Danger abounds as she unravels clues, confronts perilous predicaments, and runs headlong into risky situations. But, she faces the biggest risk with Colton, who threatens to capture her heart.

Tara Kingston weaves a tale of intrigue, suspense, and tender love in WHEN A LADY DECEIVES as Jennie and Colton strive to solve the mysteries, achieve justice, and determine if their love is strong enough to endure the greatest struggle they’ve ever met—each other.

I highly recommend WHEN A LADY DECEIVES, and I’m looking forward to reading more by Tara Kingston!

I could not resist this one because it promised mystery back in the day with characters that called to you. Jennie because of what she does and how gets you rooted to the spot right away because she is the type of female I hoped I would of been in that time. She does though go after answers that not also is deceiving but has danger attached to it too. Matthew was in employment by a organization that is always caught my eye and intrigued me so read and watched alot of it thanks to Sherlock, that good ole Scotland Yard. They both have secrets so with that being said they also both have chemistry that ignites this into quite the thrill. Heart will pump a time or two but with some clues you will not tary in getting to the finish with this one.

Not your typical HR

I really liked that this was not your typical duke/debutante romance. It has intrigue, suspense, crime, and good character tension.

Loved the book! Tara Kingston is a wonderful author. Jennie is a undercover reporter trying to take down a very dangerous man. She just found her informant dead in an alleyway with her throat slashed. Matthew Colton is Hawkins first LT. and disgraced Scotland Yards Inspector. Matthew is trying to get info on his cousin the ruthless Claude Hawkins and destroy him from within. With a killer on the loose slashing throats and Jennie working at an Inn/Pub and her life in danger. Matthew must work over time to get the evidence her needs and save the woman he loves! A great story with a wonderful ending.

ROMANTIC and DARING!!

As the first book in a new series, When a Lady Deceives is an action-packed blockbuster of a romance novel with enough thrills and chills to last a lifetime. There is a "Ripper" like murder killing off actresses, barmaids and young women indiscriminately. The heroine Jennie, herself masquerading as barmaid, is in actuality a gentlewoman working as a reporter. She meets, and subsequently falls for our hero Matthew who has secrets of his own. It is a race to see who will save who, and if Matthew can keep Jennie safe from the dangers lurking in 19th century London.

This is book 1 in her Majesty’s secret service book 1. I had wanted to read this first because I had gotten a later book from Netgalley and I wanted to read the series in order. However, this was such a hard read for me. I just couldn’t get into this story. I am hoping book 2 gets better because right now this was doing it for me. It was slow and wasn’t in love with the characters. I guess we shall have to see.

Okay

I don't know if it's just because I had such a connection to a previously read book, or if I just am not in the mood for a novel such as this one- but I did not feel the pull to this novel that I normally do when I am reading a new novel. I will definitely have to try again later.

Intrigue and Sexuality

Definitely a page turner. Jenny is an adamant journalist. In her time it was unusual to have parents to support her in her career choice. Jenny and Matthew both made dangerous choices to right the wrongs of a very mean man. Thankfully things work out for them. Very well written 👍.

Really just a drag. Great plot that wasn’t executed properly. There was zero depth to the romance and the entire time I had no idea why the hero and heroine even liked each other. Was also confused as to how the heroine could be so into a man she believed killed other women. Their entire dynamic was just weird (for lack of a better word).
