Allan Pease is an Australian author and motivational speaker. Despite having no education in psychology, neuroscience, or psychiatry, he has managed to establish himself as an "expert on relationships".
Originally a musician, he became a successful life insurance salesman, he started a career as a speaker and trainer in sales and latterly in body language. This resulted in a popular sideline of audio tapes, many of which feature his irreverent wit.
His best-selling book Body Language brought him international recognition. It has been followed by several others. He is quite well known in Australia and during the 1980s he was an occasional TV analyst for political debates where he would analyze the body language and overall performance of the contestants.
This book can be a quick read. It walks you through all kinds of body language and what it means. It talks about how you sit, eye contact, standing, what it all means, etc. It's a lot of information to take in. However, you have to keep in mind that this doesn't always pertain to the situation around.
This book was required reading for a course I took in college, and it stuck with me enough that, when I was looking for a book on the basics of body language again 10 years later, I picked it up again. This book does not hold the secrets to interpreting human behavior, but it does have some handy tools to figure out how others may perceive what you are saying and how you can attempt to modify your own gestures to convey different sentiments non-verbally. The book is largely devoted to business, particularly in pitching sales, but much of the guidance can apply to other areas of life as well.
There are a few sections that are outdated - for instance, which direction a potential buyer blows their cigarette smoke is not often something we get to take into consideration during a business meeting; and I can't fathom the idea of someone EVER getting out of their car during a traffic stop to try to persuade an officer not to give you a ticket these days! But most of the information is still relevant and applicable. Definitely a good, quick primer to understanding body language.
This book was very interesting because it tells you about what people think of you like if they think your interesting or they don't like you. Sometimes you might notice your own body language like sometimes I see my self crossing my arms and legs so I was not interested. I would really recommend this book because it is interesting.
Tedious. Title should read Signals: What you already know about body language. In the corner, there should be a sticker that says "Now with 40% less content!"
I don't really doubt most of the suggestions in the book, but evidence is often appreciated.
