Fascinating historical account of the Civil War centering on Lorena, a nurse trained by Dorethea Dix, who signs on as a spy for the Union. She struggles with deplorable conditions as she treats patients; often amputations are preformed with little or no pain medication. She forms friendships with several Confederates and realizes she is falling in love with the Doctor with whom she works. The characters are true to their time and realistically portrayed. The grim realities of war are not glossed over. This is a romance, but it isn’t flowery and sweet. Bad things happen during war and the author doesn’t shy away from that fact. Limbs are coming off all over the place and our two lovers do not have it easy. Just the kind of romance novel I enjoy! :-) Historical detail is amazing.
This book intrigued me and I overall liked reading the first half of it! I did have three complaints toward the end that I think a reader needs to know.
1. The main character is raped by two men (not main characters) repeatedly. Its fairly graphic and although it fits the context, it upset me and seemed jarring compared to the rhythm of the book up until then.
2. I didn't like the way the romantic man in the story reacts to Lorena telling him about the rape. It's like hes saying, oh dont worry I still like you instead of feeling sad and trying to comfort her.
3. The main guy never seems to complete his character arc and stop being indifferent to slavery.
