Fire Within is an incredible book that describes the teachings of St. Theresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, weaving together Scripture and passages from their various works. It is an excellent introduction to Carmelite spirituality that provides a guide to Gospel living through the works of the Saints rather than a methodology for prayer. I really appreciate the emphasis that this book is meant for everyone—lay and religious alike.
In this book, Dubay defines contemplative prayer, and contrasts it to discursive meditation, gives a tour of the Teresian Mansions, discusses conditions for growth and development of prayer and virtue, and mentions other miscellaneous topics such as friendships and spiritual direction. I was grateful that Dubay gave realistic expectations for what prayer can and should look like in different stages. Dubay was diligent in providing nuance in describing the Saint’s teachings, clarifying popular misconceptions and misunderstandings. Finally, there were several sections that almost felt like examinations of conscience in accessing where one is at in their spiritual life. As such, this book is great for anyone drawn towards Carmelite spirituality and interested in deepening their prayer life!
Thanks to Drew for gifting me this book!!
