The fantastic world of Mike Mignola is brought to new life by the best artists in comics. John Cassaday (Captain America) provides the stunning cover, as well as two stories, for this stunning kickoff. TyRuben Ellingson, who worked side by side with Mignola as conceptual designer on the Hellboy film, lends a pinup, and Andi Watson (Skeleton Key) brings an infernal duke of hell to a birthday party.
John Cassaday was an American comic book artist, writer, and television director. He was best known for his work on the critically acclaimed Planetary with writer Warren Ellis, Astonishing X-Men with Joss Whedon, Captain America with John Ney Rieber, and Star Wars with Jason Aaron.
Weird Tales #1 would have been a 5 star issue. But out of the four tales two are excellent and two are garbage. Let us begin-
Big Top Hellboy- story and art by John Cassaday. 5/5. A superb short story and beautifully drawn as well. Hellboy goes to investigate a haunted Circus. A shame the rest of the series isn't of similiar quality.
Party Pooper- Story and art Andi Watson. This is an awfully drawn, cream-puff of a story. Almost as if something from Disney Kids had made it on to the pages of Hellboy. Hellboy hangs out at the pier, Hellboy has a birthday and see the Devil (or was it Rasputin?) in the candles and blows them out. Really? Andi Watson's basic storytelling is matched only by the terrible art. Is Andi Watson a 7 year old? If not then this is not good art. Not by any stretch. 1/5 rating for this garbage.
Children of the Black Mound-story by Fabian Nicieza and art by Stefano Rafaelle. Now here we go! An excellent Hellboy story, though it doesn't actually show Hellboy. It's dark, brooding and well drawn. The Baba Yaga is not done with Russia yet, but is Russia done with her? A dark tale about the past and how it keeps its hold on certain nations. Well done. 4/5.
The last story is just a one page "story". It's about Lobster Johnson and the art and story are done by Mr. Cassaday, but this one is not on par with his other work. Lobster Johnson fights the Crimson Cowl for one page. This reminds me of those mini-story comics that you'd find in the old gum wrappers. Why was this included? It does have a noir feel in the art and the writing style-but I am not a fan of the comics from the 50's. Too "pulp" for me. That is what this attempts to be-a homage. At least I hope so-otherwise this is an utter failure. 2/5 (in case it's an homage) and 1/5 if it is what I think it is-cheesy.
So in summation there are two excellent stories in here and two you can skip. But since the two big stories are the two best ones I gave this issue a 3 star rating. It really is good..just ignore the two putrid stories and go with the cool strange tales instead.
Es un mini compilado de historias más mini de Hellboy, está cool, no es la gran trama en lo absoluto, eso sí, la primer historia es muy buena y baba yaga gives me the creeps as always.
This is other artists and writers working with Mignola's characters. Seeing the familiar characters in other artistic styles is interesting, but the stories don't go as deep and some of the characterizations seem off. That was probably inevitable.
