Nantucket: A Sailing Community

Nantucket Community Sailing is a non-profit charitable organization located 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts on Nantucket Island. Following the traditions of Nantucket as a maritime community, and taking advantage of the superb sailing conditions around the island, Nantucket Community Sailing offers youth and adult sailing lessons and sailboat rentals. As its primary fundraising events each year, NCS hosts the Opera House Cup and Nantucket Race Week. The Opera House Cup began in 1973 and NCS assumed management of the regatta in 1998. In response to sailors' requests to extend the racing, Nantucket Race Week was initiated in 2004 as eight days of racing for children and adults, in boats large and small. Gary Jobson has been honorary chairman of Nantucket Race Week since 2005. In addition to all that he has done to enhance the sport of sailing around the world, he has enthusiastically supported sailing on Nantucket and worked hard to make Nantucket Race Week a success. When Gary Jobson suggested that sailing on Nantucket would be the topic for his 18th book, Nantucket Community Sailing was excited to partner with him. Gary Jobson is a former sailor, television commentator and author based in Annapolis, Maryland, and a former Vice President of the International Sailing Federation. Jobson has authored 19 sailing books and is Editor-at-Large of Sailing World and Cruising World magazines. He is currently President of the National Sailing Hall of Fame.
