Annabella can’t remember anything before the last six years, and her dreams are telling her something. She just doesn’t know what. Desperate to find the missing pieces in her life, she heads to France, where a castle exists that matches the one in her dreams. Once there, she has to figure out if the mysterious place holds the key to unlocking the past she can’t remember.

Henri, once a powerful Fae prince, is locked within the home he built for a princess who can’t remember him. A rose blooms every hundred years, signifying the chance to break the curse placed on him and his Faerie Court. Something is changing, and the girl he loves has returned—but can he get her to love him again and free them all from the endless cycle?

The Blue Mage – Amber Morant

Dragon Kept – K.R. Thompson
Fairy spells are going awry—and for no good reason. Even though Morgana has managed to patch up her own botched spell and turn the toad back into a prince, she’s been given the task of fixing another fairy’s mistake as her punishment. But it won’t be easy. With an entire kingdom turned to stone, a princess forever charmed in sleep, and one unhappy dragon keeping guard—things could get interesting, to say the least.

If the Shoe Fits – Rosa Lee Jude
There’s more to Cinderella’s story than glass slippers and pumpkins. Waking up in a different time, a modern world, Cinder discovers that her storybook life was no fairytale. Is she brave enough to travel back in time and face the evil that threatens her future? This twist on a classic will leave you wondering if other fairytales are really fiction.

From the Depths – Kate Bonham
Carys, the favorite daughter of the King of Atlantia, has always wanted something greater for herself than to marry young and have more mer-children. She wants to be human—to marry the young sailor she’s seen by the docks. When she’s given the opportunity to become human, she jumps at it, hoping to meet her dream man.

Only problem is—humans are not what she has thought all her life. They are greedy, money-hungry monsters. What if the man she’s secretly hoping for, is the one she was destined to marry? What if it’s not always greener on the other side?

Godmother Death – Kellie Honaker
Philip was just an infant when Death became his godmother. As a gift, she presents him with a barrel of cider that bestows miracles to those who drink from it.

But there is a catch—it only works for certain people. When the barrel refuses to work for the only woman he’s ever loved, Philip must deal with the consequences of cheating Death.

The Steel Heart – Layne Aust
Emilio has been driven to madness since the death of his love, Natalia. Stuck in his shop, the heartbroken man tries to recreate the beauty with steel and nails. But the blacksmith is awarded a second chance by a wayward witch who makes him a deal—one that could either reunite the lovers or keep them apart forever.

Finding Bell:
Cursed from the dark witch, Henri has become a beast and Bell has no memory of her life with him. So when Bell and her best friend Lane go to Paris and decide to take a tour of this castle, will Bell break the curse and love her beast once again? I enjoyed this retelling of Beauty and the Beast but felt it was too short, I had too many questions after the story ended and it didn't feel all the way complete.

The Blue Mage:
Elona is a thief, a good one at that. So when her friend Roland tells her about this apprentice position with the Blue Mage, she decides to try out and hope that her parlor tricks will convince the mage she's good at magic. But there is more that meets the eye with the mage, will she learn his secret for power before it's too late? A war is brewing and Elona learns more about herself then she ever thought possible. I enjoyed this story but wish it had a different ending.

If The Shoe Fits:
What if the people that we know in our life are actually real life fairytale characters? Well Cinder is really the Cinderella from the fairytale that we all know. But her real life story doesn't have a happy ending. Will Cinder be able to face the truth about her lost memories and believe that she really is who she is? I enjoyed living through Cinder as she tried to learn about her past. The only thing I wished for is it be another chapter longer because I kept wanting to know what happened. Other than that I really liked this take on Cinderella.

From The Depths:
Carys, a mermaid, and daughter of the King is being forced to marry Toric, a merman who never speaks with her. Carys wants to be in the human world and fall in love with the dirty armed man Ryk, she saw before. So when she escapes on the day of her wedding, a sea wench grants her the wish she desires, to have legs and live amongst the humans. But there's a catch, she has three days to get a true loves kiss. Will she be able to make it in time? Loved this short story!

Godmother Death:
When Philip was just a small boy, his dad was very sick and was in need of finding him a godfather. When Death comes and offers herself to be Philip's godmother, his dad agrees. She cared for Philip and gave him cider and the gift to heal when he was old enough. She knew that he was one to help others based on his actions when he tried to save his friend many years prior. But when the love of his life falls ill and there is nothing he can do, is he willing to play god and cheat death so she can live?

The Steel Heart:
After Natalia's death, Emilio stops at nothing to try and find a way to bring her back. So when a witch claims that she can, there is a price he could have to pay. When Natalia wakes, she won't remember him, can Emilio get her to fall in love with him again? After all, if he can't, then he's the one that dies. I really liked this take on Beauty and the Beast.

Dragon Kept:
With her spell gone wrong, Morgana has been punished to fix other fairy blessings that have turned into curses after she fixed her own. The one she's tasked with now has to do with a sleeping princess and a dragon, the catch, the dragon can't be killed. Morgana has to find the prince that can break the curse along with finding the fairy that was originally charged with this blessing to see what went wrong. Can Morgana fix everything before it's too late?

FINDING BELL: Michelle Ziegler -solid 3-3.5*
A unique retelling of the old Beauty and the Beast story. I really enjoyed the fae lore introduced to make the plot work. Perhaps because the story was so brief, all aspects of the novella felt very superficial. At times I felt like I was just told things and not really drawn into the character’s experience. I did however wish that there was more if an ending/epilogue to give me more closure to the story. Yes there was a HEA, but I just felt like I was left hanging. I received an ARC through Booksirens in exchange for an honest review.

K.R. “Kim” Thompson has propelled herself in recent years from an author who wrote fantasy novel for a hobby to being a local literary superstar. The Bland County native has teamed up with a half-dozen writers from across the world for her latest works via her new publishing company, Magic Quill Press, for Once Upon a Time: The New Fairy Tales. This new nearly 450-page publication places new spins on timeless fairy tales that will make you rethink the true stories behind the original works at the very least. Seven classic tales are revisited in this volume with such freshness one can easily forget the primary basis.
The first tale, Finding Bell, is Colorado author Michelle Ziegler’s spin on Beauty and the Beast. The Prince Fae novella offered for this volume chronicles the life of Henri, the entrapped prisoner of his own French castle and his journey to be reunited with the love of his life. Unfortunately, Annabelle’s memories from the last six years are wiped clean from her mind. While assuming a newer and more modern identity, a trip touring the paintings of vast French castles, coupled with the vivid images of her nightly dreams, keep pulling her in another direction toward discovering a part of herself whom she is dying to know again.
The Blue Mage by Amber Morant tells the story of a magical sorcerer whose treasures are sought after by a cunning young thief named Elona. After becoming an apprentice to the Blue Mage, Elona realizes his own true identity. This will become his most difficult feat within his young life of hard knocks.
A fantastic spin on Pinocchio, Layne Aust, a Southwest Virginian author, tells the story of a heartbroken blacksmith so heartsick over the death of Natalia, the love of his life, that he works to recreate her out of steel. After making a deal with a dark witch, who brings her to life, Emilio realizes that attempting to resurrect the departed, especially at the hands of an evil enchantress, is not as he may have hoped. In fact, brining the metal version of his loved one to life may reap consequences that are worse than a broken heart. The Steel Heart has a very thrilling Rod Serling sort of twist to it.
A take on The Little Mermaid, Australian writer Kate Bonham brings her From the Depths adaptation home to its originally more morose Hans Christian Anderson beginnings as opposed to the Walt Disney film version. This was a story I had to grow to like. I thought the original was too depressing and the Disney music drove me crazy. Honaker’s story, however, was a happy medium, not too bleak or sugary. It was a story of depth, interest and suspense. It also makes you mindful of the adage that urges you to be careful of things you desire, as their realization could be a potential disaster.
When Death is your godmother, it can bestow you both blessings and curses. In Kellie Honaker’s Godmother Death, one of her many short stories in her own series of books, Phillip knows this all too well. When the miracle-rendering elixir she bestows him at birth refuses to work for the girl he loves, he cheats Death. Unknowingly, his actions will come at a price he may not be willing to pay.
Thompson invited another local author, Rosa Lee Jude, along for this wonderful ride of revamping timeless fairy tales. In her take on Cinderella, If the Shoe Fits, Jude takes a young girl named Cinder who lives with her aging but vital Aunt Millie and helps her discover her true magical identity through an avenue that she illustrates best, time travel. However, discovering that you are a fairy tale princess isn’t as simple as it seems. Real life doesn’t always end happily. Cinder quickly finds that elements of her fairy tale were fictionalized for her protection and discovering the true story would not be easy. She also learns that there is little room in a modern world for fairy tales. The key is to write the story of your life with choices that will hopefully help to give you a happy ending.
Thompson herself contributed a compelling story called The Dragon Kept, which I thought was a take on Sleeping Beauty although her story had little to do with Khyazelle, the sleeping princess, and more with Morgana, the blue fairy. She is a fairy who, as a penance for an erroneous spell is sent to the palace to guard the sleeping princess along with an entrapped dragon, whom she quickly befriends. They both live in a kingdom that has been turned to stone as a result of another fairy’s mistake. If she can clean up another’s mess, her own can be forgiven and her powers restored.

Some good, some not

Just like with any box set, sometimes you like them all, sometimes you like a few. The later is the case with this one for me, I enjoyed some of the stories to the point of looking up the authors and their other books. But some I just didn't like but read them through for a fair opinion.
If you like fairy tales retold, this is the box set for you. It will introduce you to some great authors, or reintroduce you to some old favorites.
Happy reading
