“Wanted dead or alive sounds like a lot more fun when it’s not my head on the block.”
Word is out, the soul eater has gone rogue and not even the might of Osiris can stop him. Or so everyone believes. That would suit Ace just fine, but after he narrowly escapes an assassination attempt, he knows it’s just a matter of time before those around him end up in the gods' crosshairs.
After 500 years on earth, it’s time for Ace to go home. But what awaits him in the Halls of Judgment could be far worse than any fate on earth.
The thrilling Amazon bestselling series is back with a whole load of action, bad-assery, and psychotic gods.

☢ Friendly warning: there might be a slight possibility that this review might possibly be slightly longer than the book it intends to, you know, review and stuff ☢
You gotta feel suspicious when a Pippa DaCosta story begins in the Hamptons. I mean, when I think of the Hamptons, this kind of stuff comes to mind:
*tries to maintain a serious composure for about 2 seconds*
Sorry, couldn't help it. I really didn't mean to laugh smile delicately at these deliciously dressed gentlemen here. It just kind of, you know, came out.
But anyway.
Let me tell you, my Little Barnacles, the worlds Gritty Pippa creates are not Hamptons-enabled. At all. So just the thought of the Mostest Awesomest Trio Ever (MATE™) embarking on a Hamptons holiday smells super fishy. What? You've never heard of the MATE™? *shakes head in utter desperation* How can you be so shrimping clueless, my Tiny Decapods?! Do I really have to tell you everythingall the time? *sighs* Okay then…Here we go…
Introducing….[Cue drumroll]
➽ The MATE™: ❣ Ace, aka the Soul Eater, aka the reformed epic asshole, aka Acehole, aka High Security Harem Top Notch Material (HSHTNM™). Aka MY boyfriend. So back the shrimp off and stuff. ❣ Shu, aka Ace's Somewhat Reluctant Kind of Awesome Demon Sidekick (SRKoADS™), aka the tongue-eating chick. ❣ Cat, aka the slightly feral clawed kitty shifter, aka the Good Person in a Homicidal Maniac's Body (GPiaHMB™). Or is it the other way around? Huh.
So what do you think happens when you send this delightfully normal, sane, rational trio to upper class paradise?
Yeah, you could say that. Replace the otters with slightly ferocious tentacled beasts cuddly pets, and you'll get a pretty good idea of how restful this holiday will prove for the MATE™. This whole holiday thing is typical Ace bullshit, by the way. But don't tell anyone I told you so.
So. Cool otherworldly mayhem in the Hamptons and stuff. And it all pretty much goes deliciously downhill from there.
First, there is the slight problem of Anubis the Somewhat Unhinged (AtSU™). Not only was the poor guy born with a jackal head, he is also the god of the underworld and embalmer supreme. No wonder he's a tiny bit on the deranged lunatic side. But I digress. So AtSU™ is kinda sorta after MY boyfriend. And let me tell you, he isn't the type of guy who likes to sing "Kumbaya" in front of a fire and stuff. These ancient Egyptian dudes, so antisocial and unfriendly. We tried to take him camping a couple of times, but he wouldn't hear of it. I even tried sewing a nice little patch to that skirt thingie he wears all the time (to get him in the mood and stuff,) but he said it would seriously cramp his style. I wonder why, it was a pretty cool patch.
But I digress. Again. Sorry. Pippa DaCosta has that effect on me. She's hazardous to my two little grey cells' already fledging health and stuff.
Problem #2? MY boyfriend is a freaky creaturefriendly animal magnet. What can I say, he's so overwhelmingly irresistible that even ancient, mystical, creepy beastshuggable, affectionate critters just cannot stay away. Yep, that's how damn hot MY boyfriend is.
So problem 1 + problem 2 = never a dull moment. Let me tell you, people, the MATE™ really knows how to have a good time. There is no such thing as a boring journey in the beautiful back country for these guys! True, being chased by a bunch of otherworldly wackos in the middle of nowhere tends to take boredom out of the equation.
But, hey, all this stuff here ↑↑? That's only a light appetizer. Because then, the seriously awesome stuff starts happening. Because then, Pippa manages to make one of the coolest worlds even cooler. Because then, she takes you to Duat. Aka the realm of the dead. Buh bye boring old world full of boring living people! Hellooooo wondrous underworld full of wretched, evil souls! And I be like:
If you've read Wings of Hope, you know that Pippa DaCosta is an amazing Fantasy writer. If you haven't read it, well, sorry, but you suck. Big time. But I digress . So we get to Duat. And boom, boom, boom. I'm dead dead dead. Several times over. It's a good thing that I have a hardy constitution. And it's also a good thing that I always stash lots of Life Potion whenever I'm about to read an Awesome Pippa DaCosta is Awesome (APDCiA™) book. I mean, I know the woman, she has no mercy for my poor nerves. And no consideration whatsoever for the little heart that I don't have. And keeps squishing it dry. She's ruthless. It's beautiful.
I seriously want to move to Duat. The sights are charmingly quaint. The locals are super friendly. There are lovely, peaceful river cruises (the captain is a really nice, hot looking guy, too). And there's a great amusement park called the Twelve Gates. Fun times. Besides, it's MY boyfriend's home, so I'm pretty sure he'd love nothing better than for us to relocate there. Our future kids would grow up in a safe environment, near their daddy's loving friends and family. Okay, so I guess Anubis probably isn't the most cordial of neighbours, but I'm pretty sure you get used to his affectionate jackal personality after a while.
See, he looks friendly enough in this picture taken at the last family gathering.
And this is it. Because spoiler spoiler spoiler. And spoiler spoiler spoiler. And spoiler spoiler spoiler. Yeah, that too. And because I've been writing this thing for three freaking days now. So I'm hungry. And cranky. And in dire need of vodka. So bye now. But worry not, for back I shall be. Sooner than you'd like. Much, much, much sooner. You're welcome.

[Pre-review nonsense]
Bloody Shrimping Hell (BSH™), she did it again! Pippa DaCosta, it's official, you are not human. You cannot be. No human being can be thattalented and fail proof and stuff. Or maybe you are indeed human, but sold your soul to her Divine Bitchiness, aka Isis. In exchange of which she obviously granted you Eternally Awesome Infallible Writing Powers (EAIWP™). Yeah, that must be it. And that kind of worries me. I mean, I sort of like you, and Isis can get a bit, you know, batshit crazy weird sometimes. Plus, her pantheon buddies aren't exactly the most balanced bunch.
One big, happy family. Such heart-warming stuff.

The best installment of the Soul Eater series so far! Ace, Cat, and Shu are all developing into more and more complex figures that get us unsuspecting readers absolutely hooked. LOVE the cover model <3 Buddy series read with the MacHalo freaks.
A buddy read with my friends and family @ BB&B! Because repentant monsters are cool😎
What can I say that my fellow GR residents have not said already? This series is very, very fun! Rare is the book where the best and the worst thing about it are one and the same - it is short! This is the best because it lacks on useless descriptions and angst, while densely packed with action, fun characters, and world-building! Worst, because despite the perfect pacing and content, or maybe exactly because of it, you end up wanting, desiring, needing, and yearning for MORE! And this has been true with every book in the series so far. It is like a high quality action-adventure served in perfect little bites of chocolate-caramel and vanilla ice cream in a hot summer day while relaxing at the lake. It is an indulging treat for the fans of both UF and advanture genres.
Ace Dante, the Nameless One, a soul-eating creature with a soul-engulfing sword has taken his two sassy and slightly feral lady assistants out of the city under the pretence of vacationing. The hope is that he would be unfoundable, but where and how can one hide from a bunch of Egyptian gods hellbound on bringing your bad-ass down? They are sure to find you eventually and here they are not waisting any time. So a nice East Coast vacation turns into something more life threatening and ends up in efforts to limit the collateral damage. Monsters attack, opportunistic demigods set traps, and Ace, Shu and Cat find themselves fighting for survival. We even got to visit other mytholgycally important cites, a river boat cruise for two, and powerful players with a bit of an S&M tendencies were introduced. I am not sure our heroes were as excited to visit there as we were to get a glimpse of that side of the story 😎.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this installment and am looking forward to reading the next one 🙂🙂🙂!
I wish you all Happy Reading and many more wonderful books to come!
See No Evil (Soul Eater #3) by Pippa DaCosta Ace and Cat have a trip that goes a bit sideways, like to hell! Trapped in his homeland but can't get back to New York. A monster is hunting them and so is a vengeful god. Good story! Kept me entertained!
In this series there seems to be a competition between the gods on who can be the biggest asshole.
So far Osiris is still in the lead but I think the Anubis might give him a run for his money or possibly Set if that dude is waking up.
How do you make a pretty cool UF even cooler. Well setting most of this book in the Duat was a really good start. Add in some crazy deadly and dangerous beast and of course the 12 gates of Hell to go through and I think you are there.
Ace is trying to lay low and is kind of in hiding except that is working out very well for him since it seems like all sorts of creatures from hell are finding him. That wouldn’t be a problem except for the god that is behind sending them and that they are getting more and more dangerous every new one that shows up. I had a slight Dune flashback for a second for one of them.
I love Ace. I think his character is fantastic and I’m really hoping that he remembers some of the things he has forgotten soon because I’m really for some of those jerkface gods mentioned before to pay. BUT…I think he might have someone more dangerous than them on his ass when those truths come out and I think the only thing more dangerous than a pissed off woman is one that is also a cat.
Cat is a great side character and I liked getting to know her a little better. There seems to be some chemistry between her and Ace. I’m really on the fence about them as I am still holding out hope that we haven’t see the last of a certain Goddess of Cats. But since this is my first Pippa DaCosta series I have no inking of where she is going to take that whole story arc.
I STILL LOVE SHU!!! I don’t care that she might be some snake looking demon in the Duat. She is fantastic. I love her games, her ferocity and her charms…all of them. I’m not sure what all her motivations are quite yet but it looks like she might actually be looking for redemption. Here is to hoping she doesn’t ever go all Mary Sue on us, because I love her as is.
After this book I have a few theories as to who/what Ace really is so I can’t wait to find out if I’m even close.
This series just gets better and better going along. Still the same love/hate complaint about the length of these novels but as long as Pippa keeps pumping them out at a steady pace I’ll be okay.
It's absolutely no surprise but Pippa DaCosta has done it again, this series is going from strength to strength and I am totally addicted! You just know that Pippa has it in for her main characters when she sends them on a holiday to the Hamptons, there is no way Ace, Shu and Cat are just going to be allowed to party at the beach for an entire book so it's no surprise that trouble follows fast on their heels leaving a trail of death and destruction behind it. A seaside holiday turns into something else entirely when Ace and Cat find themselves transported to Duat, the land of the dead that is Ace's homeland and somewhere he was exiled from 500 years ago.
What I love about this series (and all of Pippa's books) is the way she excels at world building, we've seen Ace in New York and we've had a short visit to Duat before but this is the first time we get to properly explore it and meet some of the creatures that Ace grew up surrounded by. The rules in Duat are very different to here on earth and unless they tread carefully Cat could end up losing her soul. Throw in a group of vengeful gods who want to make Ace pay (both for crimes he did commit and ones he didn't) and they're in for a bumpy ride.
See No Evil was definitely my favourite instalment of the series so far - the setting was fabulous, the action kept me on the edge of my seat and there was so much growth in the characters. Shu is totally badass with a gooey centre that only gets exposed in the exact right conditions, there's more to Cat than we originally suspected and Ace is still a loveable rogue with a scary bad side. Don't even get me started on the crazy Egyptian gods, they're all brilliant at twisting things to their own advantage and the games they play with each other just put Ace and the others in more and more danger. The stakes are definitely getting higher and I can't wait for the next instalment to see how Ace is going to deal with the latest revelations.

_______________________
It's a Pippa DaCosta ARC day which makes this a very good day indeed! I can't wait to spend more time with Ace :o)
This was the best book in the series so far. It's difficult to explain why this book is awesome without giving away too much of the plot but I will try.
I loved the setting. Visiting Duat in the first book was cool but this time around, maybe because we had the opportunity to play tourist with Ace Dante, the Nameless One as a tour guide, it was amazing. I would be perfectly happy if we get another book where Ace spends most of the time in the Underworld.
I liked the new development (new to Ace at least but the guy is pretty oblivious at times) in Ace and Shu's relationship. I think they're past the frenemy stage and into reluctant friends one. Hopefully Ace's suspicious nature won't screw it up.
Cat is amazing and stole the show on many occasions. And it seems there's some romance in the air when she looks at Ace. Unfortunately there's one little thing standing in their way and the fallout when she finds out that will be a nightmare. Then again when Ace finds out things might get even worse.
As pretty much any other god in this series Anubis proves to be a massive a-hole. This actually makes the series interesting so I can't complain too much. Yet I can wish for Ace to slaughter them all.
Again my main complaint with See No Evil is the shortness of the book. You just get comfortable and boom it's over! And yet I strongly recommend it to all UF lovers. This is what quality UF is like!
Pippa DaCosta excels at both fantasy and its urban counterpart, and my favorite books are when she blends the two, taking her characters to entirely different worlds all together.
In See No Evil, Ace Dante is forced back to Duat, the gods' version of the underworld. In Duat, he's met one of his toughest adversaries to date - Anubis, who will decide his ultimate fate. Surely a soul eater, a godkiller, can never pass a test in the Halls of Justice, especially one who's soul must be black as tar.
Up until this point, there's been many a hint about the true nature of Shu, the bane of Ace's existence. Forced to be connected for all of eternity, it doesn't help matters much that they hate one another. Much light is shed on their overly complicated relationship, and I really like the fact that despite spending inordinate amounts of time together, neither one really knows the other. All of this couldn't have come at a better time, because the future for both Ace and the gods is about to get ugly. It's certainly a time to have an ally and with Bastet still missing, Shu can easily fill the open ally position.
Bottom line - excellent installment into such a great series. Filled with Egyptian gods and mythology, and equal helpings of cynicism and sarcasm, The Soul Eater series has quickly grown to be one of my most anticipated series, and I'm already itching for the next one. Highly recommended, especially for those who like a little mythology with their fantasy.
*I received an advanced copy, without compensation, in exchange for my honest review.
When Ace goes on a well-deserved vacation he really goes all in...
Uuuuuh, no, that doesn't look right:
"Pretend you’re on vacation.” “I was on vacation until a vurk attacked me. Now I’m in the underworld with a soul eater as a guide, and I’m about to get in a boat floating on a river of fog with something from The Mummy, so forgive me if I seem a little tense.”
When Ace Dante reenters Duat, after 500 years on Earth, it's not with a drink in his hand, but cuffed in slave chains - with Cat, the first ever mortal to ever cross into the realm of the dead, by his side.
Yeah, it's not exactly the ordinary Hamptons holiday.
We're talking snakes by the millions...
12 gates of terror, designed to strip your soul down to nothing...
And worst of all; Anubis with his scales and his feather...
Talk about a "vacation" from hell!
As the perceptive mortal she is, Cat makes some observations regarding Dante's nature that I can't wait to discover in future books! And Cat isn't without Secrets of her own, either. And Shu: Perhaps 500 years in a human skin suit has done her some good, after all;-)
See no Evil is definitely my favorite book in the series. Hold on tight for a smart, hair-raising thrill ride: Pippa delivers a non-stop action novel that blends magic with humor, mystery with vengeance, resulting in an irresistible labyrinthine tale of rich and interesting subplots.
4.5 stars!
*I was given an eArc in exchange for an honest review *
I can't get enough of this series! Love getting to know more of Ace, Shu and Cat, and see Ace get himself out of his latest bind. This is my favourite in the series so far, with Ace in a situation with seemingly no way out. Ace's past is finally catching up with him when he is dragged back to Duat, but he finds allies where least expects as he tries to save himself, Shu and Cat from Anubus - one very powerful, vengeful Egyptian God. Cat and Shu are two tough, powerful sidekicks, who keep Ace on his toes and can more than look after themselves. Ace is just glad that they are on his side, or are they? The humour & sarcasm, the plot twists, the great characters and non-stop action all meld together to pack one hell of an urban fantasy punch! Can't wait for more Ace & the gang!
These keep getting better and better. Ace the godkiller has made a few enemies. They won't let what he has done or what they believe he has done go without punishment. Various enemies keep popping out of the woodwork to get him.
The journey into Duat was awesome. It was fascinating to learn more about Ace's homeland. He discovered some surprising things about himself there, but nothing that gave him the answers he really wanted. Obviously there is something special about him. I am curious about why Osiris has punished Ace in the way he has. Why didn't he simply kill him like the other gods would have done?
Ace seems to have accepted that he has actually changed. The problem is almost no one else believes it. The one person who does is the last person he would have expected to. Shu showed her true colors, but all it did was confirm my suspicions about her. Cat is great! She can seriously kick ass. She and Ace would make a good couple. The whole situation with Bastet is likely to put a damper on things. I wonder if she'll believe him when the time comes.
Oh Ace my beleaguered nameless one, when will those terrible gods leave you in peace?
The Soul Eater series are not stand alone and must be read in order. Each book has it's own completed story arc, though the main story/mystery is built on through each successive book. The author cleverly weaves both parts together, with each book providing answers, along with new puzzles, in equal measure.
It goes without saying that each time Bastet's name was mentioned my heart crumbled a little more. The devastation that will result when the truth is revealed will, I'm sure, be far reaching and long lasting.. Oh, and what a great character Cat is turning out to be. I love how the author has included not one but two strong, fierce and do-what-it-takes females in the story. I also quite like Shu's opinions of Cat and Ace, she may be a black souled demoness but Shukra is also a pretty decent person too.
Occasionally I felt that scenes were rushed, every now and then I found myself re-reading passages in order to fully digest their content. Having read newer work by this author I can see how her writing has improved and grown stronger. This is still a really good story and well worth reading. I'm totally hooked on the series and am so glad it's already complete!
Ace Dante can't catch a-gods-be-damned-break but truly we fans enjoy his life's ever increasing drama, ill fated adventures, & is it just me or are we ready for him to know more than the gods? Maybe in this book he does? I'm not telling. What I will share is this series gets better with each installment. As we've become accustomed to See No Evil was excellent story telling by Pippa DaCosta. I love this series & would recommend it to anyone interested in UF.
3 stars - Warning cliffhanger ending.
I was given a copy of this book for no cash compensation. In accepting it, I agreed to write a fair and unbiased review.
Wow! I have always enjoyed Ms. DaCosta's books, and I have adored the other books in this series, and I am happy to say this book is in no way an exception. It opens with a scene from paradise and quickly devolves into the trouble that Ace always seems to find himself in. He can't escape the trouble he is in, and Cat and Shu are trying to help him get out of it, both with different reasons for doing so. Add in a trip to Duat where certain issues get resolved, but still more trouble is added to Ace's shoulders, and you have a thrill-ride, action-filled book. I was also happy to see a softer (well, soft for her) side of Shu that I suspected existed, and a movement of the attraction between Cat and Ace. And, to my amusement and embarrassment, I at times wanted to shout out "He doesn't remember; his memories were altered!" in the book when things were mentioned from the first book. (I don't want to say too much in case someone hasn't read the first one yet.) Oh, have I said yet that Isis is one of my favorite villains of all time? No? Well, consider it mentioned. I love to hate her, and this book made me hate her even more. Excellent writing, interesting plot, and wonderful characters of which Ms. DaCosta has always delivered. I found this book to be the best in the series so far, which means I can't wait for the next one. You really can't go wrong with this series. If you like all of the above give this series a try today; you won't be disappointed in the slightest. Highly recommend!
Thanks to the author for the e-book which I read voluntarily. This exact review will be posted on both Amazon and Goodreads.
Vacation. That’s the reason Ace is in the Hamptons… Or at least that’s the lie that Ace is telling himself and everyone else that will listen. Especially, Cat and Shu. Really, though, judgment has come calling for Ace Dante and his name is Anubis.
Thrust back into Duat with an unsuspecting (and very mortal) Cat, it’s a race against time to save himself and Cat from the Twelve Gates and the Scales of Justice.
Rolling along at a fast clip, this book is action packed from start to finish. Ace and Cat learn more about each other and, through them, we get little clues to their background. Hints I’ll be curious to see if they turn into much bigger things in future books. *rubs hands together with glee* Shu’s appearances in this book showed a lot of dimension and growth and has me wondering about the direction of her character in future. Especially given some of the things she reveals…
As for the setting, I loved getting a look at Duat, the Halls of Judgment, the River of Souls, all of it. The scene setting was detailed and fantastic.
The last 10% of the book or so is a good setup for the next book in the series. And really, this author makes it hard not to love to hate Isis. She is one evil genius of a Goddess. I just wish I could figure out what she has up her sleeve next.
this one got all the good stuff: - cat <3 - shu - interesting dynamic between our guilt ridden protagonist ace dante and his two companions shukra and cat - ace being a little less horny than we're used to - conflict of the previous books coming to a climax - constant action - even more egyptian gods & mythology - we see the egyptian afterlife in action and get to know some more background info on what actually happened in the last 3000 years - they speak old egyptian (although i'm still not sure whether it's accurate at all. sounds pretty cool tho)
negatives: despite the stakes being high i was still pretty sure they'd be fine the whole time (but the end made up for it). and the timeline of the novel is pretty tight
sadly my library only has audiobook 1-3, not the rest of the series :/
You know a book is great when you use every waking hour you have left of your Sunday to read and not do the milllion things you have to.
You know a book is amazing and magnificent when it can distract you from your Kate Daniels' addiction. I was thinking Midnight Games when I started the Soul Eater series and I promptly immersed myself in the wonder of Ace Dante. I guess Kate will have to wait for me to finish Ace first.
Ace Dante; Soul Eater, God-Killer, Swoon-worthy Alpha with trust issues.
And secrets; some so secret even he doesn't remember them.
And now clearly so much more. Can't wait to find out what he is and who will be left standing when the dust settles. Buckle up, it's gonna be a bumpy ride.
I did like the fact that much of the story takes place in the Underworld and that Shu and Cat again play an important role. I also enjoyed that there are not as much battles (but don't worry, there is still enough action), but also a little bit of introspective. Unfortunately, the other three books are not available at the library, but asking never hurts ;)
Ooohhhh, this series just keeps getting better and better! Nasty monsters, betrayal, unexpected character actions, scary gods, deadly powers, a little romance, and hints at an explosive revelation that will shake Ace's world when he remembers it! There was so much action and excitement and so much Ace being his nasty (yet oddly charming) broody self, I could scarcely put the book down! I loved the trials he went through with Cat and hope there will be more to their relationship. I like the secrets that let them slide away from grizzly deaths and want to know more about the feisty shifter. There's so much more about Ace that we don't know and the introduction of a new villain is going to make it all so much more complicated for our anti-heroes! I love how dedicated DaCosta is to the mythology and can't wait to experience more of this world. This is urban fantasy at its best!
More gritty fights, more gore, more blood, more destruction!
Can I be more happpy? Of course I can because Pippa never neglects my feelings and my heart, as she keeps walking all over them in her spiky boots.
I can't wait for Ace to remember...He'll probably feel so bad the poor guy.
But more importantly I loved discovering there is plenty more going behind the scene. But really, relationships and feelings get the hell of a lot more complicating when you are immortal- Love and hate are cmbined so well, friends and enemies really do mix up and change campa all the time. \
I absolutely LOVE it.
Thanks Pippa for being the awesome author you are ;D
A review copy was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. That in no way has detered me for acquiring my very own copy.
Holy Mackeral!!! I didn't think Ace, Shu, or Cat could get any better, and boy was I wrong!!! I volunteered to review this book from the author, and yet again she delivers without it getting tired, trite, or beating the same dead horse. Every one of her novels has sucked me in for a non stop, kick ass joyride that seems to be over all too soon. I have given out only four other five star reviews in my time as a reviewer, but this firmly deserves it. This work has earned that rating due to its fluid pace, ability to transport you into the story and settings, and the authors phenomenal ability to bring her characters to life in a way very few can. Plus my husband enjoys them as well, and he doesn't ever read!
I picked up this series from the free first book and was hooked in a New York minute. Best of all, much like Butcher, Pippa has gotten better in her craft as the series has continued. Well worth the Kindle spending money.
I especially like the character growth from the entire cast. It makes the world of gods and men come alive.
Ace needs a vacation but he can’t ever be far away from Shu without the curse that binds them together making both of them wracked with pain, so she comes along. And no one can tell Cat what to do; she’s a cat. But the beach side relaxing doesn’t last long when a creature of the underworld starts erupting out of the sand. Tentacles? In the Hamptons? Time for a random destination road trip. By the time the Recka comes along, a bird of myth and legend that turns you to stone if you meet it’s eyes, no one is particularly surprised. Least of all the hooded woman following them in a beat-up VW. One of the daughters of Anubis is tracking them, and she whacks a slave bracelet on Ace to dull his magic, but not before both he and Cat are pulled into Hell. That’s okay for Ace, he’s supposed to live there and balance the feather vs heart/sins scale like his stepmother did, but Cat? Cat’s mortal and mostly human. And Shu didn’t make the trip, so the pain will start any day now. *** Duat, the land of the dead, is where Ace is supposed to be. It’s his world and his presences sends ripples through it. Osiris still has him on a leash but for some reason known only to himself, isn’t rushing down to rescue his property. Most of the gods in this pantheon are asleep, worship of them not being what it was to keep a god alive and well fed. But all these deaths are causing waves. Anubis is awake and, evidently, is pissed with Ace Dante. Ace now has a god-endorsed contract out on him. Rather than money, the price is redemption. And there’s WAY too many people who’d love to get that. A soul slate wipe, as it were. And naturally, they’re the dangerous people; the people with the most sins. Ace has too many gaps in his memory, but he knows he didn’t kill his stepmother… he could go to judgement for that, provided Anubis doesn’t ask him any other questions. Assuming he can even survive for that long.
Oh boy… these titles are short but SO well plotted. They are really good, and very clever. Some great character development stuff for the trio. 5 stars
UGH! Everything about this was so good I don't even know how to explain how happy this book made me. It was definitely action packed and super exciting. This review probably won't be more than some incoherent and disparate rambling, but I can't really organize my thoughts right now.
In this book, shit gets intense. Cat is SO badass, I never want her to leave, because she's just plain awesome, and I'm secretly kind of shipping Ace and Cat. Could you imagine if they were together? That couple could wreck the world without blinking. DAMN. Sadly, I don't think that'll happen, not while Bast is missing (and since that shit involving her... whatever).
I loved that we got to spend more time in Duat. Probably wasn't the best thing to be there, but no matter what the reason is, I LOVE seeing Duat, and learning more about that world that Pippa has crafted, because it's fascinating. And while in Duat, we discover some things about Ace that begin to beg a ton of questions, like what the fuck is he, most importantly. This book sets all of that up, so we know the rest of the series is gonna an intense ride. And I can't wait to see how it pans out.
The Twelve Gates were intense, and I have a sneaking suspicion about some of the things we saw there The ending with the feather was nerve-wracking, and made for a bang of a finally, especially leaving Duat. That Recka shit was BADASS. And at the very end, well, there was a moment that was kind of sad This was yet another exciting installment in a series that I am really coming to love. I can't WAIT to read the rest of this series (I just ordered that last two books on amazon), and I plan to devour the next book, then, as soon as the fifth and sixth arrive, rip right through them too. Thanks Pippa, for creating such a fascinating world, full of mystery and intrigue. I love how action packed these books are, I love all the badassery, I just love this whole series in general!
