A princess who would rather die than wed. A warrior priest who would rather kill than see her harmed. A kingdom of shadows and treachery that threatens them both... Protecting Princess Ysolde from treason and assassination requires all of Geoffrey's skill as a knight-protector. Though she is a sorceress from a tribe of fierce air elementals, her refusal to marry an aristocrat of the court's choosing leaves her vulnerable. The nobles loathe anyone different--especially Ysolde as an adopted daughter of the king--and she returns their hatred with equal scorn. To save her life, she gathers allies with powerful strengths, but their dark secrets jeopardize the security of the kingdom. If Geoffrey fails in his duty and she succumbs to the tangled web cloaking her kingdom, his growing love will die with her.

This is a fabulous story, with politics and intrigue, knights and ladies, spies and villains, set in a fully realized fantasy world. There are several plotlines interwoven around the main plot, all seamlessly tied together. The reader doesn't just hear about Geoffrey & Ysolde, but a whole cast of characters who are so well drawn I felt like I knew them personally. They took me off into the Hinderan winter cold but kept me warm with the suspense of trying to figure out what's going on and what's going to happen next.
I love the strong women in this story. Ysolde is strong, compassionate, wise, and fierce. She takes no crap and gives no...cares from the people who plot against her. Yet she shows loyalty and love for those she cares for. She is no wilting flower waiting to be rescued, yet she has no qualms about asking for help when it's needed.
Then there is Raennia. What's not to love about a woman who can compete with the finest swordsmen to become one of the elite guardians of the Princess? Rae kicks ass. She is a fine, complex character, and one of my favorites from the whole story.
The men are my idea of perfect men, too. Geoffrey makes me want to find a knight of my own. He's strong, kind, caring, just a little clueless when it comes to women - just a tad! Andras, Etienne, and Laurent all give me a case of the swoons.
The bad guys are also well drawn, and a diverse cast of characters there, too. I don't want to give anything away, so that's all I'll say about that.
I don't know what else to say about this that won't end up with spoilers or me just gushing and babbling my love for this story, so I'll conclude by saying READ THIS BOOK - you won't be sorry.
There's a lot to love in SHADOWS FOR A PRINCESS. What clinched it for me was the strong female characters of Ysolde and Raennia, as well as the already established relationship between Geoffrey and Ysolde.
Ysolde is trying to navigate charged political waters (with dastardly intentions afoot) while staying true to her own moral compass. She is loyal and compassionate for the people around her. Between being an illegitimate heir and being different from the rest of the nobility (dark-skinned, magic-wielding), not to mention her efforts to improve life for her constituents, she becomes a target for her less scrupulous peers. But she doesn't shy away - rather, she meets these challenges head-on.
I'm also a sucker for women who can fight, though Raennia was much more than just a soldier. Her desire to be a knight is naturally met with opposition. However, she's given a chance to prove her skill and worth. She's steadfast and determined to achieve her goal, and not afraid to risk her life for those she's sworn to protect. Personally, I'd love to follow Rae on some more adventures!
The interactions between Geoffrey and Ysolde really conveyed their history, as well as how much they cared for and respected each other. Theirs is a meaningful relationship that feels genuine and grows stronger over the course of the story.
SHADOWS FOR A PRINCESS shines with great characterization, a realistically developing romance, and an engaging story.
How on earth to write this review... Phew. First of all, you should know that this book is extremely well written. And I am including grammar, spelling, pacing, and plot cohesion in that statement. It kept me interested and wanting desperately to know more from start to finish, despite being a longer book.
It also made me cry a few times. Bear in mind I'm easily emotional, so take that with a grain of salt. I also hate to cry, so frequently that's a very good way to make me dislike a book. Though I am still aching to some degree, I simply cannot dislike the book, and will be partaking of the next book. So good job managing THAT particularly difficult task Mrs. Kristine.
Shadows for a Princess is book one of what is to be a three book set (there are currently two released) about a fantasy world of Terraina where magic, elves, and other mythical creatures exist, thrive, and fight. The main female lead is a mage princess (Ysolde) who was adopted by the king but loved as much as any child could be. The male lead is an ex-Paladin and her Knight, Geoffrey. The story is in part the development of the romance between the two, coupled with Ysolde's struggle to rule, lead, and make changes in a male dominated world. Subplots include family drama, social upheaval, treason, and political machinations. You know, any good fantasy lineup. ;)
The supporting characters all lend their own depth to the story and we come to love so many of them throughout the course of the story. The characters featured in the next book (Etienne and Raennia) are introduced early on and we get little snippets of their perspective throughout as well.
Overall, the book really was a magnificent ride and I'm happy I finally got around to reading it. If you like fantasy, romance, and emotional roller coasters, you must give this a shot!
I adore epic fantasies, and this one definitely falls into that genre. Ysolde is a magical noblewoman with fire in her veins. She is level headed when it comes to governing, but fiery when it comes to personal matters. She's really everything I would want her to be. And of course, she is completely clueless when it comes to love. Geoffrey is a sexy as heck knight whose job it is to keep Ysolde safe, even from herself. He is rather long-suffering, but patient and strong and intelligent. He knows that Ysolde is able to save herself, but still holds himself responsible for her safety, as the captain of her guard. Together, they give a beautiful balance to the land. Until the king forces a decree upon Ysolde that changes everything. This story drew me in every time I picked it up. I adored Ysolde and Geoffrey, as well as all the other characters. I have a few favorites that I want to read more about, and I'm hoping more stories come soon.
I wish I hadn’t waited so long to read “Shadows”; it was amazing! I’d say about the first third of the book started off slowly, laying the groundwork for the characters and the world they live in. But then – boom! I couldn’t stop reading. “Shadows” is as good as any fantasy book I’ve ever read. It involves magic, politics, intrigue, and romance. Its main female characters – Ysolde and Raenna - are as strong and exciting as any “alpha” male you’d read about. Not to say that the male characters are anything to scoff at. Geoffrey, Etienne, and Laurent all offer many different exciting characteristics to read about. While the story mainly centers on Ysolde and Geoffrey, I enjoyed getting to read the story from another character’s perspective at times. And I’m not going to lie – I loved the romance! It wasn’t too heavy on it, but when it did veer towards it, it was appropriate and the amount just right. I loved this book, and cannot wait to read others in the series.
*I received a copy in exchange for an honest review* 4/5
Politics, strong female characters, romance, and adventure, who could ask for more? I throughly enjoyed this book, and am genuinely surprised its not more popular. Im not usually one to enjoy books in political settings, as I typically find them to be boring, but SFAP was written in such a way that I felt like it added to the story, and make it enjoyable.
My favorite character was Ysolde. She was strong, yet flawed. I loved that about her. Her relationships with the other characters progressed throughout the story, and I absolutely loved her relationship with Geoffrey. So perfect!
I LOVED that there were so many different stories and plot lines. The author did a fantastic job at weaving them all together!
Start of an amazing epic! Swords and sorcery, death and deception, horses and high-borns. A strong female lead is supported by strong men and women around her. Just as one threat is put down, another pops up. I thought the introduction could have been more comprehensive, as numerous past events were referenced throughout the book. Typos: adjective used as adverb (bowed deep), singular-plural mismatch ("corner of his mouth" [singular], "both dropped back into a frown" [plural]), wore should be worn ("he'd wore it since"), missing quote mark, "laid in his bed" should be lay, eminent (famous) used twice (actually once it's spelled as emminent) when imminent (about to happen) is meant, cited used for said unless it's changed to "cited the fact that."
I received Shadows for a Princess as a free copy from the author (InstaFreebie). The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion. The author set a steady pace from the first chapter, adding some interesting characters and great tension between the Princess, Ysolde, and her guard, Geoffrey Ysolde was naive due to being shielded by those who love and support her, and she doesn't realize how some of her actions & decisions stress others who work to fulfill her wishes. As she matures and the story progresses, a wonderful plot (a few, actually) is revealed. Excellent world-building, intense story, and engaging characters. A definite 5-star read-- in fact, I'd give more, if I could.
I absolutely adore this book and can't wait to read the next in the series. If you want a heroine princess that knows her mind, a second in command that will have your back, a girl who wants to be a knight as well as some magic, mystery, and court intrigue then this is the book to read! The world building is amazing and unique. The characters are well defined and all of the trials and tribulation they go through in this one book is amazing (you can tell from the first page to the last how great the character development is). I am excited to see the next adventure!
Magical. It's was a thrilling story full of lies, betrayal, romance and hope. I enjoyed the strong will characters and their relationships.
I'll admit that it took me a while to get into this story as it was a little slow at times especially in the beginning but towards the end it picked up and held my attention.
I'd love to see what happens next with the characters I grew to enjoy.
I love this book, full of surprise and magic. The characters are well developed, strong and funny. I love the storyline and the magical setting. It will entertainment you until the last page. A story for those who love fantasy. I received a copy from Payne & Taylor and this is my honest review
Title: Shadows for a Princess Series: Trials of Terraina Note: Book 1 in the series but it does have a conclusion and is not a cliffhanger.
This is my review of Shadows for a Princess , the first book in the Trials of Terraina Series. I got this fourth book in the series free in exchange for an honest review. This is the start of a great world and it can be read as a standalone with no cliffhanger ending, it is the whole story. Be warned though you will not want to stop with just this one book and you will want to know the whole series. The book moves at a good pace and keeps you interested. It is a longer book so you will be getting your money's worth. Some of the parts are predictable but there are twists in the book that will just make you want to yell at the author and then will make you very sad. To be honest even though I love all the characters I think my favorite one is Ysolde's mare. Yes a horse is one of my favorite characters because even though she is a normal horse (nothing paranormal about her) she is highly intelligent and helpful. You know you are in for a good book when it is written so well that the horses have their own personality! This book was not currently in my want to read wheelhouse, in fact I am on a shifter kick right now, but within a few chapters it grabbed me and held on and I almost read the whole book in 1 sitting. Add in a female guard and an adorable little Brownie child (everything he does is so cute) and you will be in love with this book.
This book is about Ysolde. She is an adopted daughter to the king. The King fell in love with Ysolde's Mother and kept her as a mistress/companion. They would have stayed together forever except for the fact that the King was bound by rules and customs and was unable to marry her and was forced to wed another. After the marriage her mother left to return home but left Ysolde with her adoptive father because it was what was best for her. I think that is what made me very interested in the book. Instead of Ysolde being looked down upon as being less than the rest of the family she was treated the same as the King's legitimate heirs were and in fact she was made Duchess of her own area. The only family member that hated her was the King's wife. This story shows us Ysolde's world while living at the Duchy. Ysolde is everything that the nobles in the kingdom are not. She is dark skinned, from a nomadic "savage" tribe, a strong magic wielder, and they hate her for that and the fact that she does not believe in letting things stay the way they are if they are being done wrong. She is trying to change things for the best and changes how people are taxed and even the trials and executions. This makes her a target for other nobles. Most of the people love her but there are people scheming against her and will they be able to find out who it is in time to save Ysolde's life? Luckily for Ysolde that her closest friend is her Knight, and protector, Geoffrey who is an Ex-Paladin and has his own powers and has sworn to keep Ysolde safe. When Ysolde is forced to pick a husband to marry she refuses them all until her father picks one for her. Knowing that the husband would crush Ysolde and all she has done Geoffrey must decide if he can act on the feelings he has for his Princess or if he can allow another to take her.
There are some characters that arrive into this book in a mysterious way and you end up spending a bit of time trying to figure out if they are good, bad, or neutral but you learn pretty quick what they want. Laurent and Etienne are strangers who come to offer their services to protect Ysolde but at what price? Then you have Andras who is Geoffrey's' cousin and just as devout as Geoffrey is. You will also love the strong character of Raennia, a struggling female who is trying to make her way into the knighthood and to be a protector of the Princess but is facing opposition because she was "born without the right parts". Pretty much all of the characters in this book have a strong personality and you learn right away if you want to love them or hate them. The writers even make the bad guys seem 3D enough for you to be able to picture them in your mind. is so great at bringing the characters alive that you find yourself picturing them. Also bear in mind you do have to remember there are more sad parts but if an author cannot bring out an emotion in you than they should not be writing and this book will cause you to ride a roller coaster of emotions as you deal with what is going on and think ahead to what is going to happen. I will admit to feeling anger, sadness and happiness at certain parts in the book. I even found myself figuring out who certain characters were and wondering how they would factor into the next books in the series. This is my first book in the series and I can say for sure that I will be reading ALL of the books in this series from now on! I already have it in my mind who I want to see get their own book (and hopefully a husband/wife) of their own but due to some of the twists in the book I find myself unable to be 100% sure who is going to get their own!
This was an epic fantasy book with some really terrific female characters however the plot is more than a bit standard and hence this book didn’t make the cut for me.
I’m genuinely so surprised that I haven’t come across this book before. I’m also upset that there isn’t a third book. Where is the author? I need an update 😭

Shadows for a Princess is the first book of the Trials of Terraina series. The second I read the summary of this amazing book I knew I had to read it! I mean, come on, a mix of Game of Thrones and Outlander? It was a done deal! It definitely had the court political intrigue and the fantasy that it promised. I loved that Ysolde was such a strong character, in fact this book had amazingly strong female characters like Ysolde and Raennia who wants to be a knight. The world building and pacing of the story were amazingly excellent! And it's long too so I was able to enjoy it for quite awhile.

Shadows for a Princess by Dominique Kristine is wonderfully written debut! Right from the beginning, you're transported into this amazing magical world and what a world it is. The author goes in such great detail that you can picture castles, the food, people, and even the clothes as if you’re actually there. It was very easy to escape life while devouring this book that I may have neglected chores and most of my responsibilities. I regret nothing.
If you’re a fan of fantasy with a bit of romance then you should definitely read this book. You won’t be disappointed! I give the 5 stars
This is 1 of those books that combines a little of this and a little of that and makes it a fantastic story and the author brings everything together just right. If you like lords, ladies, spies and intrigue then this is going to capture your attention until the very end.
I received an advanced copy of this book for an honest review. This is book 1 of the new series Trials of Terraina by the author.
Wow. A very intense story with knights and magic. We follow the story of one woman from a girl to a young woman. She tries to help those around her and the people she governs. But the rich fight her at every step. They try to force her into marriage and even assassination. But one man has sworn his life to protect her and will never stop. But can the two see what they really mean to each other or will they be forced apart?
A great read with magic, a lot of violence and some hot scenes.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of the book.
Great story that I really enjoyed. The evolving life of Ysolde. Her beginnings and how she grows and takes charge of her life. Despite the many ups and downs, she continues to learn and love. I really don't want to go into details as I REALLY hate spoilers. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
If you haven't read anything good for a while, this is the book for you. I really recommend it and, you won't be disappointed!
I enjoyed this imaginative story. The characters are well developed and it is easy to connect with them. There is a great mix of adventure, action and romance. There are twists to the story and I love surprises and won't ruin any for you. I recommend you read the book but be prepared to want to read more about these characters.
NO SPOLIER ALERTS!!!!! I have to say for someone who doesn't normally read anything, but paranormal books, and especially something that is not from this century this book was AMAZING!!! I LOVED IT!!! It captured my heart from the very first sentences. . I loved the way the nobles are trying to find a husband for Princess Ysolde, and all of the suitors that are trying to woo her and the way she dismisses some of them, I laughed so hard, I was crying, especially when Duke Lorwick was concerned. She does have her knight, friend and protector Geoffrey, who was always by her side. He is on her team to protect her because her life is always in danger, people did not like that she was of a different culture, she is taxing the rich to keep the poor from going poorer and they want her tamed . So, there were some people who want to assassinate her. There are so many twist and turns in this story. That you start to wonder who can you really trust in your own kingdom ? I loved the way Ms. Kristine writes the love story, it's not rushed and it's so pure and natural something that I have seen in a long time.
I was giving this book as an ARC copy , to review it, and I am so happy I was because this is an amazing book and I do not know the author, I just love to read a lot.. I will definitely be recommending this book on Goodreads as well, so I am not sure if this will post twice.. I would definitely recommend this book, I loved the beginning, middle and end of this book and I loved that it was not a cliffhanger, so I don't have to wait in suspense, but I can't wait to read the next book. Not because I have to, but because I want to. You don't want to miss this great book !!!
Ysolde is princess and has no plans to marry. She just wants to be left alone to run her kingdom with her best friend and knight Geoffrey. However her father wants her married so arranges courtings. After attempts are made on her life Geoffrey will stop at nothing to protect her even marriage. This was a great book. The first one by this author but won't be the last. I voluntarily received an advanced copy of this book for a honest review
What a great new fantasy series. It had it all. Thrills, treason, mystery, magic, kingdoms, and sword fights. Plus a few funny scenes just to make it interesting. It's the story of Geoffrey and Ysolde. Ysolde, originally from a nomadic people, becomes the adopted oldest daughter of the King and has recently become the Duchess of Ashdale. The other nobles are appalled, especially when her progressive ideas make Ashdale rich. So let the assassinations, jealousy, and treason begin. The story was well written and just sucked me in. I could easily picture what was going on. Just had to see who the traitors were. Cannot wait for the next book to see what happens next. You know there has to be more traitors. Plus what about the other characters in the story we meet.
I had this book free from the author for a honest review off instafreebie. I hadn't read a book by this author so it was first for me I don't really read fantasy I usually read paranormal love stories so this is really different to for me and I'm so glad I gave it a go what can I say it's a really good story a good length it's got a lot going on in it to politics, and a princess who has to find a husband or the king will find one for her magic, sex but not too much, knights in shining armour and one hot Gregory who loves the princess it's a happy story but there is also someone who is trying to kill the princess it's also a bit sad at the end made me cry buts that me I cry at anything it's a fabulous book and I would definitely recommend it I can't wait for book number 2 oh and there is a HEA but it dose carry on so looking forward to next one
This was my first novel by Dominique Kristine despite being online pals for literally years. I don't know why it took me so long! This was a stellar book with some really cool world building, subtle magic without a big explanation to lob you over the head, and a great cast with lots of heart and chemistry. Ysolde is a great heroine and I instantly fell in love with her fire and sass. Loved this one!
Really enjoyed immersing myself in this tale of magic, hope & love. An easy read fantasy that kept me coming back for more. I can recommend the adult fairytales rewrites too. (By their other pen name Vivienne Savage)
