A very unusual book. A critical analysis of Hegel's Lectures on Aesthetics. Russell claimed that Hegel was the most difficult philosopher to understand. Indeed, Hegel has often been charged with obscurantism (a view I've never shared). But, without question, Hegel's ideas are exceptionally complex (and were so even in his own day). Yet Desmond's book--a very thoughtful analysis--offers all the engagement and pleasure of a brilliant dinner conversation.
For anyone who cares about art, about why we make it, what it means, this book is highly recommended.
