MYSTERIES THAT HAVE PUZZLED THE GREATEST SCIENTISTS Astonishing advances in science have transformed our lives. And yet, for now, solutions to some fundamental questions still lie tantalizingly out of reach. Here at the cutting edge of science truth is often stranger than fiction, and luminaries race to find answers that could win them Nobel Prizes or create unimaginable new problems. Unsolved Science collects the most significant and mind-boggling questions troubling the planet’s greatest minds, such as: • Why did a dizzying variety of complex animals appear on Earth in a relatively short space of time, after three billion years of single-celled organisms? • How do the chemical processes in our brains explain the ways we think and experience the world? • What are dark matter and dark energy, and why do they take up 95 percent of the universe? Each fascinating problem is explored with concise but thorough reviews of its background, key figures, and leading current theories. As well, Unsolved Science is beautifully illustrated with more than 130 photographs, paintings, illustrations, diagrams, and maps.

A pretty interesting book for those who are into science. Some concepts are hard for the average person to completely comprehend, but that doesn't mean one shouldn't try
A couple of bits were out of the date by the publication date (e.g. exploration of the ocean floor) and the very necessity of covering so many topics so briefly, of course, means they're covered at a very high level, but I found this book very engaging and easily readable without being insulting. The author kept it light and there were numerous points that piqued my curiosity enough to spend some time online learning more.
Unsolved Science explores fascinating questions about astrophysics, medicine, biology, geology, and more. Each topic is discussed in a concise manner that quickly summarizes the conundrum and some theories to solve it. This book will ignite your curiosity about a variety of subjects, though never quite satisfies you with its explanations.
