Laurie grew up in Los Angeles, moving steadily up the west coast after high school, and now lives in a house on a rocky beach on Bainbridge Island, WA. where contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t rain every day. Not that she doesn’t welcome the drippy skies. On dreary days she stays happily glued to her office chair, tapping away on her computer instead of being tempted outside into her garden when the sun is out.

Laurie has written and designed over 50 interactive games for kids featuring original characters such as Putt-Putt and Fatty Bear for Humongous Entertainment; and Huggly for Scholastic; plus many characters who you probably know and may even love as much as she does – Madeline, Little Bear, Harry Potter, The Little Mermaid, Clifford, SpongeBob, and Mr. Potato Head - and lots of others that frankly, she’s lost track of, whose scripts are chronicled somewhere on an old hard drive hidden on a shelf in the garage. She also wrote a trio of picture books based on Putt-Putt (the little purple car – not the mini-golf game).

Laurie has had stints writing scripts for animated children’s TV shows such as Dragon Tales for PBS and What-a-Mess for ABC. Unfortunately What-a-Mess lasted only a season. It was about an out-of-control Afghan puppy who wreaked havoc everywhere he went. Mostly she was disappointed that the show got the axe because she had so many stories left to tell based on her own Labrador retriever who had such an insatiable appetite that he devoured a couch and ate all the seat belts in her car. She’s decided to save her dog’s crazy appetite for another book.

And finally, after both of her sons moved off to college, she figured it was time to try to her hand at writing a novel. Hello There, We’ve Been Waiting for You! is the first in a trilogy and her first published novel.

This sparkling sequel to Hello There, We've Been Waiting for You! begins with 12-year-old Madison McGee spending her summer with friend Rosalie Claire and her new husband Thomas at their Pacific Ocean-front inn and café in Jacó, Costa Rica. The imaginative, persistent Madison is joined by besties Noah and Violet for a final new weeks of fun in the sun and surfing. But, of course, that’s not how things work out.

When her mother died a year-and-a-half ago, Madison had gone to live with her self-absorbed bleached-blonde grandmother, Florida Brown, in Truth or Consequences, N.M. When Florida shows up unannounced at La Posada Encanta, it turns out that she is deathly ill. Madison, Noah, Violet and Rosalie rely on each other — and some magic — to cure Florida and set things to rights. I won’t say anything more because I don’t want to spoil this quirky, funny book, but I will say that the MegaPix 6000 TV makes a return visit!

While not quite as dazzling as Hello There, We’ve Been Waiting for You!, I very, very much appreciated having this light-hearted read when I was very, very ill. Recommended for kids and adults alike who’d love a clever, humorous read.

Madison McGee and her friends are off on another adventure. This imaginative middle-grade fantasy hits the spot on so many levels, including friendship, loss, and kindness. A great cast of likeable characters, lots of humor, and some fun time-travel surprises, all add up to pure magic!

Hello There, Do You Still Know Me is the second book in the Hello There series. I didn't read the first book, Hello There, We’ve Been Waiting For You!, but it was easy enough to follow along.

11-year-old Madison lives with her grandmother, Florida Brown, in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. At the moment, it's summer and Madison and her friends (Noah and Violet) are spending their vacation in Costa Rica with a family friend, Rosalie Claire. It's a break Madison really needed as her relationship with her grandmother has been kind of rocky. Florida has high expectations for Madison and can be very demanding. Also, Florida really wants Madison to be more girly and not so tomboyish, which causes lots of friction between the two.

When Florida suddenly shows up ill in Costa Rica with a mysterious illness, Madison's feelings about her grandmother turn completely around. Suddenly, she is desperate to help find a cure so she won't lose her like her mother. At times it was difficult to like grandma Florida for the way that she was treating her granddaughter, and how she treated her own daughter in the past. I'd like to think that she'll change her ways for the next book in the series.

In order to save Florida, the trio must first find the remote for the MegaPix 6000, a television that will zap them to the past so they can find a Baltic amber to recharge Rosalie Claire's magical fanny pack and she can make the cure to save Florida. Madison and her friends go on an adventure to the Amazon rainforest to track down the remote and then travel back in time to 1994 to talk to Rosalie Claire's Grandma Daisy. The time travel was my favorite part of Hello There, Do You Still Know Me? Time travel for me has to have certain rules, kind of like in Back to the Future, you aren't supposed to change any of the events because there could be consequences in the future. Which is even more challenging for Madison, because she really misses her mom. I really liked the way in which Arnold gives Madison the opportunity to spend time with her mother as a teenager and share some fun heartfelt moments together. Reminds me of when Marty McFly runs into his own father. The story is full of magical fanny packs, a time-traveling television and lots of adventure making for an overall fun, quick read.

Charming story about Madison, a preteen and her two best friends. They are learning magic and one of the lessons is time travel. Now I always thought time travel would be fun, but after reading the rules Madison had to follow, I'm crossing time travel off my bucket list. Fortunately it worked for Madison and her friends with just a few bumps along the way.
