3 1/2 Stars, I'm a huge Radclyffe fan. I have read all of her books, and the only time I can remember not rating her books a 4 or a 5 stars, was some of her short story collections (with other authors). So I was shocked to find myself considering if this was a 3 or 3 1/2 star book. I finally decided on 3 1/2 since this book is almost there. It is almost everything I look for in a Radclyffe book.

The story is about Jordan, a farmer, who runs a community garden program in NYC. She is busying trying to get this local garden going, and desperately needs more help. One day Kip shows up at the garden. She has hundreds of community service hours to complete, and has been assigned to Jordan. Jordan, does not know if this is the answer to her prayers, or a nightmare. Kip must be some kind of criminal after all. The more they work together, the more an attraction sparks. Is there a chance for a real relationship, or are both these women not really looking for love?

First of all, I liked both characters. I thought the age-gap worked, and I liked their personality especially Jordan. Not sure if it was her being more mature, but she really was a character with good caring qualities.

The romance was believable, and filled with chemistry. There was scenes with them driving in the truck together, that you could see the sparks flying off the pages. And as always, the sex scenes were good and steamy. There should be no doubt how well Radclyffe writes intimate scenes.

Getting to the things that I didn't care for as much, is a little harder. Overall, I thought the book seemed quite quick and a little short. Just when I was really getting into the relationship, the book is over. And a lot of things Radclyffe had talked about in the book, never happened. Like them getting a booth in the fresh market, or Kip finishing the greenhouse. Things they were building up to, that seemed important, just were never talked about again.

My other two gripes are little and sort of comical, I'll admit. I thought there was too much talking about food. I know some people say Radclyffe sometimes skips things like sleeping and eating in her books. I thought this one was the opposite and had a little too much of them talking about eating. I just wanted to yell, forget about that, go back to the passionate scene, ignore the reality of characters actually eating. And last, what is up with Uber? I have never read about Uber being used so much in a book before. It is clear Radclyffe does not use a taxi, but loves Uber.

I would still recommend this book to romance fans. I don't think this is quite classic Rad, but it is very close. The characters are likeable, the chemistry is there, and it is an enjoyable read.

An ARC was given to me by BSB, for a honest review.

A classic Radclyffe is what Secret Hearts is. A sweet story, with well-developed characters and enough chemistry to keep you 100% committed to the end. You know what you’re getting with this author and she doesn’t let you down.

Catherine “Kip” Kensington hails from a very prominent, well to do New York family. Her last name and the work she does for the Department of Defense forces her to keep a low profile. Unfortunately her brother, Randy does not follow her lead. Addicted to drugs and “borrowing” cars, lands not only himself but Kip in lockup. A childhood tragedy shaped both Kip’s and Randy’s life, and the young man has taken refuge in nefarious activities as a way of masking his pain. Kip plays the mother role and tirelessly tries to help Randy out of jams even though the price she pays is a criminal record and a ton of heartache.

Jordan Rice is developing a community garden project in the heart of Manhattan. She works tirelessly to plant her crops and make contacts to supply her produce to the city’s restaurant industry. With a heart of gold, and an iron will to succeed, Jordan doesn’t make room for anything else but work in her life. She’s given up on meeting anyone and fills her time with making the world a better place.

Jordan and Kip meet in a super awkward way. Kip is assigned by the courts to do 400+ hours of community service for driving a stolen vehicle (thanks Randy!). This caring do-gooder takes her licks and heads over to the community garden, unbeknownst to Jordan that the garden was getting a helper. Tension increases as the office building has just been broken into, which causes Jordan to almost attack Kip, the perceived thief.

This age gap romance has a lot going for it. You have two level-headed, intelligent leading ladies who really work well together. Life throws them some curveballs sure, but these to have a synchronicity and a natural flow. They just work well together in all sense of the word. Even though Kip is used to holding a bit of herself back, Jordan has a way of looking past that and finding out who Kip really is. Through Jordan, Kip learns to let Randy stand for himself, even if it’s a painful process, to watch someone you love take the hard road. This is a feel good story that is most definitely worthy of your time.

It took me a long time to finish this one, but I don't have any complaints. It just didn't capture my attention like other books have.
The age gap drew me to this book, and it was well done, but not one that I'll be rereading.

Nice easy, lazy read with not too much angst. I enjoy reading these because I have to do so little work to get to a pleasing end. Kip (collar-length black hair, blue eyes, lean and sexy) is sentenced to 400 hours of community service. She's place at an inner-city community garden run by Jordan, who is 15 years older than her.

As always, well-written with great chemistry between the characters.

I received a copy of this through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, thanks to the publisher/author for the opportunity!

I wish I had more to say about this? It was very cute. Definitely not instalove and I enjoyed the journey the characters embarked on together. The MC had relationships outside of her romance and they were also developed and explored.

The beginning moved a little fast and I wasn't sure what was going on. There also was a scene that teetered on sexual assist on the SECOND page. The MC discovers her date has disrobed while she was out of the room, said date then makes several advances while naked, despite MC appearing very uncomfortable. Contact does stop as soon as MC definitively says "no" but it was an odd scene and felt a weird way to start the book.

Otherwise I just don't know what to say? This was cute, a little cliche and the writing didn't blow me away. But definitely enjoyable.

This book is 100% typical Radclyffe romance, it delivers exactly what it says on the tin: poignant story, sweet romance, great characters chemistry and hot sex scenes. Radclyffe knows how to pen a good lesbian romance (after all, this is number 14 in the series) and the reader gets an enjoyable experience. Like in many of the previous books in the series, the main characters have a secret in their pasts that threaten their budding relationship but eventually find the strength in their love to overcome their conflicts. Nothing new under the sun but highly effective.

Overall, a very enjoyable read. 4 stars.

I really loved this book.
It's fluff. It's formula. I've read the same book a hundred times before, but I guess the reason I keep reading these books is they're good fun and satisfying.
It's LGBT (Lesbian) fiction that is safe. I mean any heterosexual could read this and they won't be challenged, they might even forget its LGBT.
So it won't win any awards but for what it's worth it gets my 5 satisfying stars.

Secret Hearts is an extremely sweet and notable novel by Radclyffe. The writing is, as usual, on point and you have a clear understanding of her protagonist’s feelings and turmoil’s. I like how Radclyffe never wastes time in her story lines, she throws you straight in at the deep end and into the drama of her tale.

Kip is in trouble with the police after driving a stolen car that she didn’t know was stolen. Taking the hit for her idiotic brother, she gets community service at a community garden run by Jordan. Jordan is not looking for love especially from someone that has obviously got secrets however, like with most Radclyffe novels we know that love conquers all, right? After some “what if’s” these characters take each other on a journey of self-discovery and love.

I enjoyed reading both these characters and watching them grow in love and respect. The age difference between them is something I enjoy in romances from time to time and Radclyffe has written it well. Kip got under my skin from the beginning because I couldn’t understand the secrecy about her involvement with not only the police but also the Government but as you read on it unravels into an a striking tale.

I wouldn’t say this is my favourite novel of Radclyffe’s but the problem is that I love all of her novels and some are just too hard to top. I would have preferred a longer epilogue that maybe had the characters written a year or even six months later instead of the short last chapter with details that support the happy ever after.

The use of the secondary characters was great and added anguish and distress to the story that really made the main character’s actions stand out and give the element of thrill.

As usual the sex scenes where on point and its nothing I ever have to worry about with a Radclyffe novel because one her greatest strengths in writing is that she writes phenomenal love scenes.

4 stars.

This was just a lovely, warm hug of a book. It feels like classic Rad, but without seeming like a repeat of her early books. Jordan and Kip are just lovely and I'll be reading their story again.

Another standard Rad. In the stable. Perfectly fine but nothing remarkable enough to boost it to four stars. Rating possibly a bit harsh but quality competition means more of the same, no matter how enjoyable, just is t enough any more

I liked that there wasn't any major conflict between the characters. I get tired of the storyline where everything is going well then someone is misunderstood and they pull away and have to have something bring them back together. That being said, there is a force that interrupts the characters from a totally smooth course. Jordan seems so girl next door and Kip gives the appearance of being very worldly. But I totally see Kip happy on the farm and out of the city life! I got the audio version, the narrator did a good job. Although her voice grated from time to time. I've heard better narrators.

I almost always enjoy Radclyffe books. I have read nearly every book she has published and will continue to read them in the future. They are all good reads, solidly written but easily forgettable. This book was a good read, and I didn't get bored but it will not go in my favorite Radclyffe books either. Radclyffe's characters are always likeable, and she typically delivers good chemistry. I enjoy Radclyffe's ability to write flawed characters. Kip is just such a character. She isn't perfect, but you still like her and want her to get with Jordan. Jordan I thought was a different character for Radclyffe. I really liked Jordan, and enjoyed the age gap. For me, Jordan made the book. As always solid writing, good secondary characters, and a fun story. Worth buying, because you really can't lose buying a Radclyffe book.

ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for a fair review

I enjoyed this more than I've enjoyed one of Rad's books for awhile, possibly because it's a stand-alone, and didn't involve medicine or emergency personnel. The romance is sweet and fairly straight-forward. The lead characters are both interesting, and I found the community garden backdrop a nice change.

Kip's family dramas didn't grab me though. For all her relationship with Randy drives a large part of the plot of the book, it's fairly superficially handled, they barely spend any time together, so it's hard to get a feeling for why she'd go to all this trouble for him, when we don't get to witness their relationship, but are just told about it.

Tya's situation was the same thing, I didn't care, because it felt like it was shoehorned in to add drama that wasn't really necessary. Kip's stuff was already enough.

The romance between the two leads was enough for me though, and I'm a sucker for age-gap stories, so it had that going for it as well. I also liked that there's no overly contrived break up crap towards the end, which made for a nice change of pace, and that Kip's real backstory didn't create any angst in their relationship, as I'd assumed it would once revealed. I'd give this 3.5 stars, but I've rounded up to 4.

How far are you willing to go for family? Will how much you give ever be enough to halt the guilt? When you say family, there is such an emotional reaction that can bring a frown or a smile to your face and anywhere in between. Sometimes you need outside intervention to provide perspective and ease the guilt. Catherine “Kip” Kensington appears to have it all, family, money and a career she is good at. Jordan Rice the "do gooder" with a big heart. While Kip is doing work for the government, Jordan is doing work for the community. I really connected with the community garden in an urban setting. Though there is an age difference, it does little to hamper the friendship and possibly more between Kip and Jordan. I enjoyed the playful flirting by Kip and the will I, should I by Jordan. There is quite a bit of processing by both characters. Considering what is going on in regard to the United States and immigration, I thought the addition of the Tya story line was apropos.

So Sweet!

Kip is sentenced to complete community service at a community project where she meets Jordan, the woman whose passion is this project. After an awkward first meeting, Kip manages to convince Jordan that despite her order, she isn’t a dangerous criminal but she can’t tell her any more details than that. With the order of her life turned upside down by Jordan’s arrival and the feelings it elicits in Jordan, she finds herself believing in Kip and wanting to experience all life will have to offer with her in it, especially when Kip really proves her worth by bring more invested in Jordan’s gardening passions than she imagined she would be.

Such an adorable story! Every moment of this story had me fully engaged and loving really feeling the intimate connection that Kip and Jordan shared. From that moment they met, to the moment the truth started coming out and Kip opened up to Jordan, each one was deep, meaningful, and had me on the edge of my seat. Knowing as little about Kip really put me in Jordan’s shoes and I did find myself wondering about her, but it was never for more than a split second because she really seemed genuine. I just hoped I wouldn’t find out she wasn’t, which really made this such an exciting story.

My heart broke for Kip though, when I did learn of her story, all she’d been through. I also admired her though, everything she did for her family, her brother. She really didn’t need to and yet she tried, not only to make up for what she deemed past mistakes but for her guilt. That’s where the story hit emotionally. All that Kip had experienced, was experiencing, and how strong she was with it all, yet inside she was vulnerable and Jordan really bought that out in her. I adored them together, loved their connection and their team work. I loved how Kip not only cared so deeply about Jordan but about what Jordan cared about most too, and that worked both ways once Kip allowed Jordan to know what lay beneath the surface.

This was my first Radclyffe book and I really enjoyed it, so I am looking forward to reading more in future. The way this was a romance but still had thrills, drama, and intense moments that could have changed the whole dynamic at any moment, really made me keep turning the page. That loveliness of a sweet blossoming romance, tinted by the actions of others and the past, made for a realistic and wonderfully engaging read.

I really loved this and think it is the perfect romance for everyone who likes a sweet love story, but also for those that don’t like overwhelming cuteness and like their romance with a little easy danger on the edge. I highly recommend this story!

Well, the book and story is okay. It's more or less an ad for Uber (can't believe how often that word is used) and I was missing a little more sexual tension (oh there is lots of sex, but somehow it's just that). I'd say 3.5

The new Rad is an excellent lightweight traditional romance: quick and easy with little angst and a sweet charm.

Kip comes from money and power, but finds herself on the wrong side of at least a misdemeanour when she tries to make sure her brother doesn't drink and drive. Being assigned to 400 hours of service at a local Community Garden is a million mies from her normal life, but she quickly realises just how much life she is missing.

Jordan was born a farmer and it’s in her blood, but tragedy has left her living a life with very little commitment. Sort term projects using her Ag skills, very few friends and a sense of always moving on. She is passionate about her projects though and not at all sure she sees the help of a criminal she never even asked for.

I really liked Kip and Jordan. They both have a complex family back history and are deeply scarred by tragedy. They both live restricted and unemotional lives because of their losses. Their coming together is a classic “happy ever after” without much angst, their attraction is overwhelming and overcomes any minor obstacle, but who doesn't need an extremely rosy HEA now and again?

There are touches of realism. Kip’s enabling behaviour to her wayward brother, the dysfunctional family, the fear of an illegal when the feds show up, even Kip’s claustrophobic reaction to a jail cell. Enough grounding to make it real, especially the heartfelt energy to make the project work, bring the garden to life.

Well written, fast paced, easy reading - an enjoyable way to spend the evening being swept away by romance and passion. Classic Radcliffe at her best.

This wasn't really a Radclyffe classic for me. As someone who isn't really a gardening enthusiast, the lengthy explanations about how to plant did cause me to drift off a bit during the beginning of the book.
That said I can't say that I didn't like the book either because once the author got over Kip's extreme self-imposed guilt trip I actually started to like the story.

My favourite character in this book has to be Jordan, she was so well developed and I loved her personality. Kip on the other hand was my least favourite character and this is mostly due to her constant self recriminations, I understand feeling guilt and having that carry into the rest of you life but the way Kip behaves after her arrest is really annoying.

The second half of this book is a lot better than the beginning and I really started to enjoy the story, I just wish it had been like that from the beginning because I really liked Kip once she was more carefree with Jordan in the truck.

I actually didn't read this one but listened to the audio version. Not my favorite Radclyffe if I'm being honest. The writing of course is always well done as well as the dialogue between the characters, but I just couldn't get into the story behind why Kip didn't come clean and kept putting herself in bad situations. Also, I get that it is embarrassing and all but really, was it that a big a deal that Kip had to keep it a secret. I think if she actually went to prison for like 6 months it would have given the story more depth and even Kip's unwillingness to share. I also thought the side stories with Kip's brother and Jordan's co-worker weren't really finished. Maybe they weren't that important in the grand scheme of things but maybe I'm wrong.
Regardless, this was not one a really enjoyed and was glad that I used a free credit on Audible than paying the $10 to read it. Radclyffe fans may be disappointed with this one

I have rated this book 3.5 stars.

This book was a classic Radclyffe romance. Your simple story line, automatic attraction, cocky butch with strong femme. The characters never sleep or always forget to eat.

I was looking forward to the age gap romance as that is my soft spot. My eyes did glaze over a little bit during the gardening dialogue as I have never been able to understand or have any interest in gardening.

The book had its moments for me, it was a light quick read. I liked the characters but never really felt like you had a chance to truly connect with them.

It's always a pleasure to read a story by Radclyffe, her characters and events keep you wanting more, well me anyway. Whether it's her Intrigue, her Paranormal or her Erotica, she captivates the reader. Kip and Jordan are a wonderful addition to her many lovable characters, and as is the case for many sometimes doing the right thing for family is sometimes more debilitating than one might think, for Kip the guilt she carries has shaped her into a caring human being who just needs to step back once in awhile. Jordan is just who Kip needed in her life and vice versa, after all, age is but a number.

Radclyffe is a consumate storyteller (as she should be at over 50 books) and she knows how to develop a character. It would be easy to say that she is predictable and formulaic but I think that is unfair. All romance novels are "predictable and formulaic" but I think where Radclyffe shines is with her characters. Here we have an excellent main character in Kip - because of a stupid, but understandable, decision she ends up with 400 hours of community service. She serves this at a community garden project, run by Jordan, an "older" woman. Kip is not interested in relationships and Jordan is focussed on making the garden project a success. There is enough depth here that you care about both these characters and the ancillary cast. And the love of gardening, farming and the environment shines through. I enjoyed a few relaxing hours with these characters and they didn't let me down.

Meh.

I don't think much else is really required for this review but since some of you might want more detail before making a decision I suppose I'll commit a few more words on the subject. Before I get into specifics on this book, there's this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oP3c1... These curves hold true for most stories for a very good reason; they play on our emotions and give us what we want, we don't appreciate the couple getting together if they haven't had to work for it and the happy ending isn't as amazing if disaster hasn't just been about to strike. Radclyffe usually sticks rigidly to this formula and while I've bitched about it here before, I still keep on reading her books! This novel, however, is a departure from the norm, and not in a good way. It's all a bit bland. There's no drama, no tension, nobody attempts to resist anyone or get between our leading ladies. They both have the obligatory secrets and traumatic pasts but they get over that really quickly.

As I said earlier, meh.

If you haven't read any Radclyffe before go and read Above All, Honor, Shield of Justice or Fated Love all of which were written years ago and are infinitely better than this. If you have read these and are looking for some new Radclyffe, don't, you'll be disappointed. Just re-read your old favourites they're still good.

Disclaimer: I received an e-copy of this book on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

When I picked up this book I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I definitely was not disappointed.

This story features an age gap (not the creepy kind though, they really fit well together and their age difference is discussed without dismissing problems that could come from such relationships) and it's set mostly in a community garden in the middle of Manhattan. I'm not a big gardener, but I found the talk about it interesting instead of boring. It could have easily become too much of course, but I think it was nicely balanced. But hey, maybe that's just cause I could really relate to Jordan as a city-dweller who also misses the countryside. All in all Radclyffes love of the environment and gardening really shone through and it was lovely to read.

There is a scene in the beginning of the book that borders on Sexual Assault and feels super creepy, which I really disliked so be warned that it's there. There's also talk about death, suicide, loss and drug abuse all throughout the book, even though it doesn't go into a lot of detail.

One thing that bothered me was the kind of dragged out conflict in the beginning. I felt like it was just used to build up some more tension between the characters, even though they have enough other things going on. One thing I did love though was that as soon as the story really got rolling, it never got boring and it was lovely to read. Especially the end was gorgeous. However, I was a bit annoyed by the fact that many things that were talked about in the novel were never realized until it ended (the greenhouse for example of the booth at the fresh market). I would have loved to see their happiness at having achieved that after they struggled so much to get it done, but other than that the ending was really nice.

Now it's time for the most important part of the book: the characters! They were really well written and give the book an incredible depth that I loved. Both of the women have experienced traumatic things in their life and lost loved ones. The reveals were written so heart wrenchingly that my heart really broke for those two characters. But also side characters like Tya were great. I really loved Tya. (She should have gotten some more screen time tbh)

Another thing that was wonderful was the amazing chemistry between Jordan and Kip. At times it was sizzling and at others just truly heartbreaking, but you could tell that they had great chemistry. I also loved that it wasn't Insta Love and that instead their relationship slowly developed from Who are you over distrust to a wonderful friendship and then ended with love. They are definitely a couple you can't help but root for. But also separate from the relationship their interactions (f.e. at work) were great and I truly enjoyed it a lot.

All in all this book definitely doesn't really let you set it down with all the mysteries that are hiding in Kip's and Jordan's past, but when you have two main characters that are so great you really don't want to set it down. It takes a while to get into though since the beginning feels dragged out, but the ending is just amazing.
