This is the first book I have read by Libero, and I believe her debut book. It was an okay read. As Pin wrote in her review, you can tell it was by a newer author. Libero does show promise, and the book did get stronger towards the second half.
The story is about Emily, married to her husband of 25 years. They have a comfortable relationship, but it not filled with chemistry and passion. When her husband dies in a car accident, Emily's life changes quickly, including her budding feelings for Detective Kay. When the police determine her husbands death was murder, Kay and Emily must find out who the killer is.
While the opening of the book was pretty exciting, when things slowed down, the writing was lacking a bit. There was too much telling, not showing. It was kind of like looking at the characters but they had a plastic film over them. You could see them, but there was a barrier that stopped you from really connecting with them. You could tell that Libero grew as she was writing, and the second half had less issues with this.
I thought the mystery was well done. I was enjoying how things were unfolding and found it interesting. However, it was not too hard to figure out most of what was going on. The ending, of the mystery, was okay. It was kind of lumped together, when I didn't think it really needed to be.
The romance was sweet. They kept the pace pretty slow, which made sense with Emily coming out of a 25 year marriage. I liked the two characters together. And for the most part they did communicate, so misunderstanding were over quickly. Which was a nice change from what we see regularly in lesbian fiction.
This book was pretty down the middle. While I don't think everyone will love it, this will difinetly appeal to people looking for a sweet romance with some mystery. I would be willing to read more from Libero, in the future. I think she will only get better with more experience.

Consequences is a romance cum mystery/thriller, with an often-used but quite promising premise -- a detective and interested party fell for each other while solving the case. It is the debut novel by Sarah Libero, and that shows in several ways. First and foremost, the writing is uneven. The first third of the story is too much telling and not enough showing, and the insufficient dialogue seems stilted. After that first part, the writing gradually gets better. The dialogue becomes much more natural, and the story flows quite well. Unfortunately, too much attention is given to some non-essential parts of the story like the softball practice. In the last third, there are some parts when the story is somewhat contrived. The two mysteries come together by making the characters pull some strange moves which do not correspond to the previous plot development. Such elements are when the author's inexperience shows the most.
However, I find this first novel enjoyable despite the thoughts I share here, and may recommend it. The protagonists are believable and likable, their love story nice, and there are some good secondary characters. I was not bored with the book, the reading went quite smoothly. So I will continue to read books by this author, and I think that she has potential to do even better in the future.

However, I find this first novel enjoyable despite the thoughts I share here, and may recommend it. The protagonists are believable and likable, their love story nice, and there are some good secondary characters. I was not bored with the book, the reading went quite smoothly. So I will continue to read books by this author, and I think that she has potential to do even better in the future.

I liked the sound of the blurb and was looking forward to this read.
Unfortunately I would say the book was just ok. The storyline and characters were good however the emotion was just not there. For me the romance started way to fast. I think it would have been better to draw out more and have Emily struggle with the fact that she was moving on so quickly after her husband had died. I know she had struggled with their marriage before he died however he was her best friend therefore to make it more realistic I would have liked to have felt her struggle. For me because the romance just started I couldn't feel any chemistry between the two and what made them special. It just feel flat for me.
It was just one of those books that I enjoyed enough to finish but would never have any lasting effect on me.

I don't know what to say. I didn't connect with the character and it felt stilted and not real.

Not a bad read. I quite liked it. You can see where it is going to head from early on but none the less it is well written. Few spelling mistakes throughout it though which I thought strange.

Hard to get through
This is the 3rd book I've read in the last few weeks where I found myself wondering who is doing the editing and whether the publishers try these books out on beta readers first before publishing.
The writing is so stilted and halting that it was hard to read. Most of book is written in paragraphs like this:
Kay drove to work. She got out of the car. She locked the doors. She walked to her office. She took off her coat.
Literally 80% of the book reads like this. The story itself I forgive because this is probably a first time author but it needs a ton of work especially on showing instead of telling. There are a ton of times where the author feels she needs to tell you what the character is going to say before saying it. It's unnecessary and halts the flow of the story.
I'm sorry for being so harsh but for $10 a book I know most people expect a well written book. This just isn't it.
