Discover more than 280 hikes in San Diego County! This fifth edition of San Diego County’s classic hiking guidebook features 282 trips, ranging from short, self-guided nature trails to challenging peak climbs and canyon treks. In Afoot & Afield San Diego County, coauthor Scott Turner has fully updated this edition, which includes new maps and more than 30 new hikes. The book encompasses almost all public―and a few private―lands within San Diego County, including Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Cleveland National Forest, the Cuyamaca Mountains, and numerous county and city parks. I truly haven't read the entire book cover to cover, it's not that kind of book. But I have used it extensively to the point where I know what a valuable tool it is. Afoot and Afield in San Diego County has long been considered "the Bible" of local hiking books (and there are a LOT of them). This long awaited edition did not disappoint. Trail descriptions are updated and accurate. The most useful part for me is the front charts that allow you to compare various trail elements: distance, difficulty, geographical area, and especially whether dogs are allowed. I have been working my way through the dog hikes and hope to get to all of them. So, I can also use this guide for goal setting as well. Fantastic updated version of a classic.
Jerry Schaed went on every hike in Southern California, then wrote a description of each one. Even the desert hikes! He must have had to hike every day for his entire life to do so. He died a few years ago.
I wouldn’t call it a bible like the LA Times did. It can be hard to visualize some of the descriptions without a map. But it is a good way to get an idea for which hikes sound like the most fun. I went to Palomar Mountain and William Heiss County Park after reading this. And it was amazing!
I am not going on a 12 mile hike through the desert though. I’ll pass on that one.
I also learned a lot about local history. There are Indian morteros (grinding holes) all over San Diego County. And he recommends a lot of books at the end.
I'm happy to have this classic regional hiking guide available as an ebook. Sadly, I heard the author passed away, so perhaps this will be the last edition.
