Cat Got Your Cash

Rate this book
With a killer prowling New Orleans’ Garden District, pet boutique owner Lucy Marie Crocker must protect two endangered Siamese before another cat-astrophe strikes

Lacy Marie Crocker’s whimsical pet couture has gained a following in New Orleans’ cozy Garden District, and word of mouth has traveled all the way to her favorite fashion designer, Annie Lane. Lacy’s thrilled when Annie schedules a private session at her home to discuss a companion line for her evening wear, but when Lacy arrives for the appointment, she enters the kitchen to two mewling Siamese cats—and one very dead Annie.

Lacy takes the kittens home to care for them until they can be properly claimed by Annie’s family or friends, but after a busy day of work, she returns home to find them missing. And when Lacy learns the cats are set to inherit Annie’s fortune, she begins to wonder if the killer was after the kittens all along. Now Lacy will stop at nothing to save the Siamese and find justice for Annie—if the killer doesn’t sink his claws into her first.

Luckily, Lacy has the help of handsome NOLA PD homicide detective Jack Oliver to help her catch the cat-napper before it’s too late, in Cat Got Your Cash , the endearing second Kitty Couture mystery from Julie Chase.

I love this cozy mystery series! It’s original and entertaining. The female protagonist has two handsome men vying for her attention, and she’s constantly in need of rescuing. Lots of humorous moments in the story. The secondary cast of characters are likeable, as well as the animals, especially Lacy’s cat, Penelope. The setting for the novel is New Orleans, Louisiana, where almost anything can happen. I look forward to reading future stories in the Kitty Couture series!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Isn’t the cover of this book just priceless. I couldn’t wait to start reading to find out how those Siamese kitties fit into the story. Their names are Cotton and Cashmere and it turns out they belong to fashion designer, Annie Lane. Sadly our protagonist Lacy Marie Crocker finds her dead when she shows up for a meeting. Lacy had been looking forward to working with her favorite designer on a companion line of pet couture creations. Now she has been asked to care for her cats and that seems to put her in danger. Those cute little cats come with a huge trust fund so could Annie have been killed just so the killer could get their hands on them and the CASH. Would they kill again to get what they want. NOLA PD homicide detective Jack Oliver is on the case but Lacy pushes herself right into his investigation.

Lacy is a girl after my own heart. Her creativity shines in the hatS, scarves, capes and more that she makes for cats, dogs, and even llamas. Her mother is all about her finding a good husband and thinks attorney Chase Hawthorne would be the perfect match. But I am on team Jack, the man so clearly in love with her even though she just doesn’t see it. Her dad is more of a go with the flow guy. He is always there for his daughter. Their relationship is strong, close, and heartwarming. She also has a fur baby named Penelope. This cat will give you more than one laugh out loud moment.

The author gives us several suspects from the designer’s ex-husband to her assistant, another designer, and even some bloggers. They are all viable suspects so it was fun parrying them down. The ending took me totally by surprise. What a fabulous twist!

Julie Chase is an awesome storyteller. These characters really pop and the mystery pulls you right in. The cover grabbed my attention and the story held it from start to finish.

Another cat-ivating cozy to add to your lists!

I did not want to put this one down! Cat Got your Cash by Julie Chase is a second in series that was every bit as good as the first. I loved it. This Kitty Couture mystery was wonderful. It has the right formula for cozy lovers and just a hint of romance mixed in with a whole lot of crazy mystery. This one is set in New Orleans and makes it seem just like you are there. Easy to picture, fun to think about and a great story. I love the main character Lacy, her friends, pets and family. The woman bakes and creates for animals, not truly going out of her way to be a super sleuth but she is "nosy" for sure. I enjoy this series and book two was great. I can not wait for you to read it.

I love this series! It's witty and suspenseful and southern.

Lacy remains an endearing amateur sleuth who seems to stumble on more than her share of bodies while trying to make a success of her pet couture boutique and dodge her mother’s attempts to force Lacy to take her rightful place in wealthy New Orleans society. Of course broody/swoony detective Jack Oliver and his melt-your-knees southern drawl adds an extra dose of romantic sizzle even if Lacy is inexplicably naive as to his feelings for her. And then there’s Chase … but I’m #teamJack all the way so we won’t talk about him or the love triangle he insists on creating. There were many times I wanted to shake a little sense into Lacy but then jealous-swoony Jack or worried-swoony Jack distracted me. Did I mention that I’m #teamJack?

The mystery in Cat Got Your Cash is full of twists and turns and creepy cat masks. It’s well-plotted and the path it takes allows plenty of opportunities for worried-swoony Jack to show up – as well as the rest of the characters in Lacy’s life. From her wealthy parents to her somewhat kooky friend (and her former nanny) Imogene to Lacy’s best friend Scarlet (and Jack and Chase), she has a lot of people watching her back with genuine affection. And I can’t forget to mention Penelope the beloved cat who lives to ride around Lacy’s store on the back of the roomba named Spot.

Bottom Line: Engaging characters, a vivid setting (complete with the Deep-South mood of suspense that clings to the air), a well-plotted mystery, and a brewing romance – Cat Got Your Cash has it all! (Though there was one scene involving Lacy debating with a reporter that seemed unnecessary in my opinion) I’m still waiting with romancefangirl anticipation to see where Jack and Lacy are headed, and I’m really intrigued by the ongoing story arc involving the mystery behind the death of Jack’s grandfather.

This is not my usual type of review (if I have one), but this started to irritate me so much I just had to post it. Cotton and Cashmere, presumably the two cats on the cover, are SEVERAL YEARS OLD. The cover makes them look like kittens and they are CONSTANTLY referred to as kittens by EVERY CHARACTER. Cats have been a part of my entire life (over 50 years). They are not kittens when they are several years old. I can see an owner referring to a beloved cat as a kitten at times no matter the age as an endearment, but other people would not refer to a cat of several years as a kitten.

I have a Siamese mix and by a year he looked nothing like these, having the long, lanky Siamese body.

I'm about half way through and will probably finish the book, but I'm not enjoying it as much as Cat Got Your Diamonds.

I loved this book. I don't like to start reading a series on the second book but I didn't have any trouble adjusting to the world of Lacy Marie Crocker, so I consider this a stand alone mystery.

I was lucky enough to win an advance copy of this book and can't wait to go back and read the first book in the series. I didn't notice any gaps, but reading the first book always seems to make the story seem richer.

This is just the kind of cozy I love to read. The murder happens quickly and the whole book is spent trying to catch the murderer and recover the missing cats. Cat Got Your Cash is also full of humor, I'm pretty sure my family thought I was crazy because I was sitting on the couch, completely ignoring them, and would occasionally laugh out loud.

This is a quick and easy read, perfect for escaping whatever real life is throwing your way. It is full of twists and turns with plenty of humor.

So cute!
Another fun cozy in the Kitty Couture Mystery series, with many suspects and layers to the mystery.

My favorite part though is the chemistry build between Lacy and both Jack and Chase. And Chase stepped it up this book, turning this into a fun love triangle!

A fun and faced paced cozy mystery with many twists and turns to keep turning pages!

The second book in this series does not disappoint! I love the characters, each strong in their own way! I loved Lacy's fortitude and strength when she had to solve the mysterious death of her fashion idol Anne Lane. The possible love interest which seemed to develop between the Nola PD detective, Jack Oliver and Lacy and how shocked he was everytime Lacy didn't hold back and said what was on her mind was fun. Also it was great the way kittens were woven into the story and how solving the murder case with the importantance of the kittens was paramount with Lacy. Since she was a lover of cats and has her own who loves to ride the roomba - so funny - she became the caretaker of her idol's cats who had a trust set up for them. There are so many twists and turns and red herrings to keep you guessing. The end of the book is a real surprise! This was a fun and fast paced cozy mystery with a little potential romance thrown in. I can't wait until the next book in this series to see what could happen next. I was sent a copy of this book to ready by the author. My review is voluntary, and the opinions are strictly my own.

One expectation I have when I pick up a cozy mystery is that I will not only be entertained, but I will escape to a place I've never been. This was a bit different for me, because I know New Orleans well. I'm somewhat mixed on the portrayal of New Orleans itself. A bit touristy for my taste, with heavy emphasis on beignets, but only Cafe du Monde? Please, go to Morning Call and get a much better cup of coffee. And yes, it annoys me to refer to "Royale" street--I think you mean Royal (no e at the end there) in the Quarter. Despite those rankles, this was a very enjoyable book with engaging characters. As a cat lover I love Penelope and her roomba-riding. The plot is good, with believable twists. I look forward to reading the first book in the series now that I've been introduced to the series.

Cat Got Your Cash is the second book in the Kitty Couture Mystery series. I have not yet read the first book in the series, but I had no problem following the story in this book. This story is set in New Orleans and was a fun and enjoyable read. This story kept my interest throughout. I will be definitely getting the first book in the series and will be looking forward to additional books!

Setting: New Orleans, LA

Characters

Lacy Crocker, owner of the Furry Godmother, fashion designer for pets
Jack Oliver, New Orlean Police Detective, cranky most of the time, but I'm still in love with him
Additional characters - Lacy's parents; Jack's partner, Henri; Imogene, Lacy's former nanny; as well as various furry friends, a murder victim, and plenty of suspects in said murder
Plot: Lacy is getting ready to meet one of her heroes - designer Annie Lane. She is frantically preparing samples of her pet clothing and accessories to show Annie and rushes off to a meeting at the designer's New Orleans home. When she arrives, she finds the door unlocked, no one around, and Annie's two cats - Cotton and Cashmere - leaving bloody paw prints throughout the first floor. Lacy discovers Annie's body and is quickly involved in pestering, I mean, helping detective Jack Oliver figure out who killed the fashion icon. From the start, Lacy thinks the kittens have to be the key - her home is broken into and there's a creepy . . . someone in an oversized papier mache cat head following her around town. When she starts getting phone calls with a shiver-inducing song playing in her ear, things start to get really uncomfortable. Lacy insists on helping Jack, putting herself in danger along the way.

Pacing: Quick

Predictability: Low

Wild Card: Julie Chase has rapidly become one of my favorite authors - one of those writers who make you want to read anything and everything she writes. I love the whimsy in Cat Got Your Cash, the humor and lightheartedness that manages to be around throughout even the scariest and creepiest scenes. In my opinion, that's because of her heroine, Lacy. She's quirky and self-effacing and completely charming. Julie crafts scenes that crackle with chemistry - whether that be between Jack and Lacy or Lacy and Chase (#TeamJack) - and spark with suspense. I'm gushing here, I know, but I love everything about this book, this series, and this author. More, please!

Hit, Miss, Or Draw?: A definite hit!

In Cat Got Your Cash, the second book in A Kitty Couture Mystery Series, author Julie Chase weaves an intriguing cozy mystery tale that follows the latest amateur sleuth adventures of pet boutique owner Lacy Crocker.

Set in the Garden District section of New Orleans, Louisiana, fashion designer Lacy Crocker's Furry Godmother, a couture pet boutique and organic gourmet treat bakery is starting to get noticed and taking off. When Lacy's favorite fashion designer Annie Lane schedules a private session, Lacy is all excited ... that is until she finds Annie dead on her kitchen floor with two Siamese kittens next to her body. Lacy takes the two kittens home until Annie's family can claim them, but when Lacy finds out the kittens are inheriting Annie's fortune, and they suddenly going missing, Lacy is determined to find the wealthy felines and Annie's killer with the help of sexy New Orleans Detective Jack Oliver.

Cat Got Your Cash is the second book in the Kitty Couture mystery series and just as fun as the first one.

Lacy runs a pet boutique and also bakes great treats for pets. She is so excited because she is going to be meeting with Annie who is a fashion designer. If Annie likes her stuff she might let her make clothing for pets to go with a line of clothing she is doing. All comes crushing down on her when she finds Annie dead. Who would want the fashion designer dead and why did it have to be her that finds the body. She went through something like this not that long ago and now here she is in the middle of another murder.

Jack the detective is not happy at seeing her at another crime scene. Lacy is not sure what is going on with him as he is running hot and cold. She thought they were becoming friends but then he starts to pull away. He treats her very coldly at the crime scene, surely he doesn’t think she has anything to do with what happened. Lacy thinks some of his problems is that he inherited a large sum of money, but is not sure.

Annie has two cats that are twins and Lacy take them in because she doesn’t want to see them go to a pound. Someone breaks into her house and kidnaps the cats and Lacy must figure out who wants the cats and who killed Annie.

Lacy is an interesting character, I think its fun that she makes fancy clothing for pets though I never dressed my pets. She also makes healthy organic treats for pets. She is doing pretty good with her shop but was hoping to go global with Annie. I am not sure how she handles her mother cause she would drive me crazy. She is very proper and thinks that Lacy should be going to all her parties.

I thought it was a really good mystery with great characters and I can’t wait for the next one!

How much is your cat worth?
What would you think about a will leaving $10,000 per
month per cat to whoever ends up caring for two
Siamese cats names Cotton and Cashmere?
Is this a motive for murder or was something else the
incentive??
Lacy Crocker owns the Furry Godmother in New Orleans.
She is a fashion designer for pets plus she sells treats for
cats and dogs that she bakes herself. Lacy has a cat
named Penelope that goes with her almost everywhere
she goes in a carrier. Penelope loves to ride the Roomba
when in Lacy's store.
Lacy has an appointment to meet with one of her fashion
designing heroes, Annie Lane. Upon arriving Lacy finds
the front open but no one answers. Walking into the home,
Lacy discovers Annie Lane dead.
Lacy is given custody of Annie's Siamese cats, Cotton and
Cashmere until other arrangements can be made. Thus
the action begins. Someone breaks into Lacy's house and
steals the cats. Thanks to trackers in the cats collars, they
are located then taken to her parents. Of course, her
parent's cat, Voodoo isn't too happy with these cat guests.
Why and who wants the cats?? Or is this something more
sinister behind what is happening????
A person in a papier-mâché mache cat head starts following
Lacy. Then harassing telephone calls start.
The author provides us with an array of suspects. Each
one has their own flavor to add to the mix.
There is undeniable chemistry between Lacy and her
long time friend, Chase plus undeniable chemistry between
Lacy and Detective Jack Oliver to make things interesting.
Along with suspense, danger and mystery, the reader will
enjoy the humor in the shenanigans throughout the story.
Along with the cats, there are chickens and llamas to round
out the story.
This is book # 2 in the Kitty Couture Mystery series. It can
be read as a stand alone.
I volunteered to read the book. Thanks to the author and
publisher via The Cozy Mystery Review Crew for the book.
My opinion is my own.

Cat Got Your Cash is the 2nd book in Julie Chase’s Kitty Couture Mystery series and also the 1st book I’ve ready by Julie Chase. I really enjoyed getting to know the main character, Lacy Crocker – owner of Furry Godmother, a pet couture shop in New Orleans, Louisiana!

Lacy has a bad habit of finding dead bodies – this time it is her fashion mentor, Annie Lane. She immediately gets herself involved in both the investigation and with caring for Annie’s two precious Siamese kittens, Cotton and Cashmere. As it turns out, the kittens are worth a lot of money from a trust Annie set up for their care and this money puts a target on Lacy’s back.

Lacy has helpers in her investigation – her friend (and prospective love interest), Jack Oliver, and her old friends, Chase (another potential love interest who complicates matters) and Scarlet. Lacy has to deal with multiple break-ins at her home and attempts to cat-nap the kittens. All this while designing couture for chickens, llamas, and a variety of other animals. She sure has an interesting life!

Eventually Lacy narrows down to the suspect pool to Annie’s ex-husband, her brother, her assistant, a former protegee, her attorney, and animal activists. It’s a wild ride through the story to the end where the killer is finally revealed.

I found this to be a fast, enjoyable read and I look forward to going back to read the first book in the series, Cat Got Your Diamonds, and future books in the series!!

I was provided an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fun addition to one of my new favorite series. I love the whole kitty couture thing going on in this book. Who would not love to have a job designing clothes for pets. Leaving her money to her cats is something that I have heard of people that have done this. You have to really love your animal to do this. I felt so bad for Cotton and Cashmere, first they lost their human to murder then they get stolen from Lacy who is trying to help them. I love that all the characters in this book are cat lovers. There is even a little romance thrown in with this mystery. This author has a way of writing that makes the book a quick and fun read. I loved the setting of this book as well. As I was reading this book I thought I had it figured out but I had to really follow the clues closely. It took me until the end to figure it all out. I am looking forward to the next book in this fun series.

Cat Got your Cash is the second installment in the Kitty Couture Mystery Series set in the magical city of New Orleans. Lacy Crocker has returned to her home town to open Furry Godmother, a pet boutique. Lacy is excited at the prospect of meeting her idol and fellow designer, Annie Lane. However, when Lacy arrives at the meeting she finds Annie bludgeoned to death. Lacy volunteers to care for Annie's Siamese kittens and finds herself with more trouble than she bargained for. The story is fast paced with plenty of action to keep the reader interested as Lucy finds herself stalked by a man in a papier mache cat head, attacked by Annie's ex, and has her home broken into. Lacy throws herself into helping Detective Jack Oliver in solving Annie's murder. Joining her are her former nanny Imogene, best friend Scarlet and a childhood friend Chase Hawthorne.
This book has all the ingredients for a perfect cozy mystery. I enjoyed the New Orleans setting and references to voodoo and magic, and thought it was a nice addition to the story. Romantic sparks fly, with both Chase and Jack vying for Lacy's attention. There is also, some added tension from Lacy's mother who wants her daughter to take her place in New Orleans society instead of constantly finding herself in the midst of murder and mayhem.
The end of this book sets up nicely for the next story and I will definitely be adding this series to my list of favorite cozy mysteries.

I received a copy of this book from the author and voluntarily wrote this review.

I really enjoyed reading Cat Got Your Cash by Julie Chase. She does a lovely job describing her characters and locations through out the book, it helps me build the scene in my mind while I read. Not only that, but she brings New Orleans and it's various regions to life, either she visited and took extensive notes or researched the area thoroughly! I like her main characters, they all seem warm and relate-able as people. The main character, Lacy Crocker, is a person that I could easily get along with if she were real. Though she was born into a wealthy family, with all the opportunity in the world to live a luxurious life of leisure, she chose to follow her own dreams, working hard and become a pet fashion designer who is making the business work without family money.
While trying to put her business in the local and perhaps national spotlight, she unwittingly stumbles upon a murder., and winds up the foster mother of 2 adorable and rich kittens. Despite the attractive local homicide detective's discontent (love interest Jack Oliver), she noses in on the investigation with the help of her handsome friend (other love interest Chase Hawthorne), getting her apartment broken into and getting her in heaps of trouble.
There is mention of a previous Lacy Crocker misadventure (Cat Got Your Diamonds) that I will be reading next, but I don't think that it is a problem reading the second book without reading the first.

Lacy Marie Crocker’s crazy fashion designs for cats set in New Orleans; the land of crazy. “Furry Godmother” is doing so well that a favorite designer; Annie Lane, has asked to have a private meeting with Lacy to collaborate. Horror to Lacy when she finds her favorite designer dead when she arrives. She must find who has killed her idol, no matter the cost.

I have not read the first in this series, but would say that this installment is an easy read, fast paced, and you will not want to put it down until the very end!

It’s always a civilian and a cop. And sometimes a second boy for a toss up on who will make the next boyfriend. But I enjoyed this lengthy (for a cozy mystery) tale. I liked the cats involvements. But I hate her job. Who make couture for pets and turns it into a living? That was a tough sell. She’s have to sell tons of it to eke out a living wage. And it sounds like everything is expensive to make. Gotta admit, we don’t dress up our pets in the house….much. Our kitty would hate every minute of it. And the dogs are too big.

Cat Got Your Cash by Julie Chase is the second book in the Kitty Couture series and was a delightful cozy mystery to read. Although I hadn't read the first book in the series, I never felt lost or confuse. Ms. Chase provided enough backstory to each of the characters that I was comfortable with all of the relationships as the story progressed.

Lacy Marie Crocker is a unique entreprenuer in New Orleans with her Furry Godmother pet boutique. I enjoyed her independence and her sass as she became involved in the murder of her fashion designer idol. Detective Jack Oliver is an intriguing character who I felt like Ms. Chase was just beginning to let readers see glimpses of the real man behind the badge.

All of the characters are well developed and provide so much to the story as it twisted and turned through the streets of New Orleans. The pace of the story was fast and I really had trouble putting it down when there always seemed to be a new clue revealed. I will definitely have to read the first book in this series just so I can treat myself to another visit to New Orleans.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All of the above opinions are my own.

A fun, fast-paced whodunit with dynamic characters, witty dialogue, vivid descriptions, great suspects, twists, turns, and so much more. Once I started reading, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to see what would happen next. I really liked Lacy Crocker, owner of Furry Godmother, a whimsical pet boutique in New Orleans and her interactions with the other characters, especially Detective Jack Oliver and Chase Hawthorne who returns home to join his family's law practice. Cozy fans will love this can't-put-down book and I look forward to reading more Kitty Couture Mysteries. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of "Cat Got Your Cash".

Fun little cozy mystery.

Lacy is a pet costume designer in fabulous New Orleans. (The Garden District to be exact)
She discovers the body of a woman that she has always thought of as a hero. Fellow designer, Annie Lane, designs clothes for humans instead of pets.

She has excellent chemistry with both of the men who seem to be vying for her attention. Jack is a handsome NOLA Homicide Detective (and heir to a fortune) and Chase is a childhood friend. Both are gorgeous and rich. How is a girl to decide?

The mystery itself is well paced and I was truly surprised by the culprit.

This is the second book in the series and I look forward to others.

I was drawn to the book by the cover and was curious to see how the cats fit in. The book was an interesting read as the cats played a big part in the book as the ones who will inherit the money. When Lacy takes them in and then they go missing, she teams up with Jack Oliver, homicide detective to find out what is going on.
I liked trying to stay a bit ahead of what had happened in the book and finding out if I guessed right or wrong. A great read and an enjoyable series.

I am a huge fan of Julie's cozies, and I somehow missed this series along the way. I enjoyed spending some time in New Orleans with lots of cats! What a fun theme, Lacy creates beautiful pet couture & wants to succeed on her own. I do love how her parents are available to help if/when she needs it. The mystery kept me guessing, and the small piece of romance was fun. (I am definitely team Jack) The victim was someone Lacy really looked up to, so while she was driven to find answers, some of them were not what she wanted to hear. Overall, it's a good story, and I am looking forward to reading books 3 & 4.
