The Barbarians Are Here: Preventing the Collapse of Western Civilization in Times of Terrorism

Rate this book
For decades, Americans were vaguely aware that Islamist barbarians were in the deserts of the Middle East and in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan, executing "infidels" and raiding villages with unrecognizable names. But the Muslim world seemed far away, remote, and irrelevant to our daily lives. Then came the terrorist attacks of 9/11, followed by attacks at Fort Hood, the Boston Marathon, San Bernardino, and more. Now terrorists seem to be emerging everywhere, unleashing senseless death and destruction on our nation. They are here, and their goal is nothing less than global conquest. Motivated by ancient prophecies, they are flooding into Western countries determined to conquer our countries and establish a global Muslim caliphate. In The Barbarians Are Here , Dr. Michael Youssef provides clear insight into the motives and mission of the Islamic extremists. He offers practical steps we can take right now to begin a New Reformation that will restore the hope of Western civilization. It's not too late. We are not doomed to destruction, even though the barbarians are already here. But we haven't a moment to lose.

Wake Up America – The Barbarians are Here!

I was really excited to receive this book after hearing Michael Youssef speak about it on TV. I appreciate a strong Christian voice speaking out about ISIS, terrorists, and the decay of western civilization and culture.

The book is a worthwhile read in order to get a biblical perspective on the numerous times that God turned his back on his people and let them suffer the consequences of their bad decisions. Christians have been silent for far too long while all of our rights and beliefs have been slowly eroding away. “Barbarians could not have destroyed Rome from the outside if the Romans hadn’t already weakened their own civilization.” The similarities to the downfall of Rome and the current state of the US are frightening.

Youssef explains, “A Barbarian is a person who is not part of our civilization, who wants no part of our civilization, and who seeks the conquest and destruction of our civilization. The Islamists-Muslims who seek to restructure all governments and all of society in accordance with the laws of Islam-or cultural chauvinists who see Islam's Sharia law as vastly superior to Western secular law. They believe a totalitarian Islamic culture would be infinitely superior to the free societies of Western civilization, which are based on Judeo-Christian values. They seek the destruction of Western civilization, and that makes them-by definition-Barbarians.”

Although this book provides a good foundation, I wish the book had gone into more detail on the beliefs of Islam and more about the strategies they are using to infiltrate the western culture. I applaud the author’s boldness to write such a factual book during this time where it seems to be more important to be “politically correct” than to speak the truth. There were parts later in the book where I felt it wasn’t as succinctly written and it rambled a bit. However, it is such an important topic and I am so thankful that somebody is bold enough to write about this critical issue that every American should become more educated about – regardless of your personal religious beliefs. We need to get educated on what is happening and what we are allowing to happen in our country.

I received a copy of this e-book from Netgalley.com in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.

A Barbarian is a person who is not part of our civilization, who wants no part of our civilization, and who seeks the conquest and destruction of our civilization.

An account of history, current events and prophecy, Michael Youssef brings the gospel to light in all three genres. Youssef reminds us frequently that we must learn from our history those that have pursued world dominance. Our political climate of social justice turns into social gospel in hopes of creating a utopia on earth. This is not the good news that even Christians seem to proclaim, but Christ came to save sinners. This does not mean we turn a blind eye, but our hope is not in this Gospel and change cannot take place but only when our hearts move toward God.

Youssef believes we are in exile because of the apostasy of the church. The exile comes in the form of terrorism where our enemy is not known by sight but by fear.

I loved this insightfulness of the gospel that he writes: The difference between the false Gospel and the one True Gospel of Jesus Christ is who the focus of each gospel. In every false Gospel the focus is on us, on our political views, on our well-being, on our view of the biblical narrative, on our observance of rites and rituals, on our own good works, on our own opinion of God's character, on our own emotional experiences, or own positive thinking. In the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the focus is on Jesus- His death, His Burial, His resurrection, the prophecies about Him, and the witnesses who verified His resurrection. All false gospels are human-centered. The one True gospel is Christ centered. The gospel reflects the hope of heaven and being with Christ.

My only critical note is the lack of repentance and our motive for repentance. It should never should be to make life easier because it may not but to be changed by the holy spirit, to be more like Christ. Sometimes when Christians are only left with Christ alone, the change of heart will come. Will it soften or harden the heart. From Pharaoh of Egypt to the brothers of Joseph, we have examples of what those changes to the heart can do.

Youssef gives insight that the average Christian may not posses but needs to hear.

A Special Thank you to Worthy Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

The Barbarians Are Here by Michael Youssef was a thought-provoking read. I was reminded of several authors, actually: Martin Luther and A.W. Tozer.

I was reminded of Martin Luther because essentially what Youssef is calling for is a new reformation of the church. Just like Luther listed out his grievances with the church of his day, Youssef shares his. To clarify, Youssef is boldly saying that every preacher, every teacher, every person or group that calls himself/herself a "Christian," is not actually a Christian. It doesn't matter if you've got book deals and radio and television slots. If your gospel does not line up--is not true, is not pure--with Scripture, your worshiping a god of your own creation and encouraging others in idol worship.

It was interesting that I was reading The Barbarians Are Here at the same time I was reading Martin Luther's To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation. The two books are surprisingly similar in goals. Luther was calling for the German nation to come together and be great again, to embrace the true gospel message, to reject the false gospel of the Roman Catholic church, to reform all areas of life, not just "the church," but everything. Youssef's goals are similar. He's calling for repentance, for revival, for reform. He wants Americans on their knees in prayer, wants the morals of the nation to change--from the inside out, not some ill conceived outside-in. People need changed hearts. People don't need to do better, try harder. If you consider every church, every denomination, every preacher or teacher with a large following, every bestselling author as "the church in America," it is easy to see why it needs reform and where it needs reform.

Here's how Youssef sees it:

What would that New Reformation look like? It would call men and women in the church to repent of all the things they have added to the gospel—or have taken away from the gospel. It would call them to preach God’s truth out of pure motives, instead of from a lust for wealth or fame. It would call them to put away the false teaching and idols of the Prosperity Gospel, the Social Gospel, the Emerging Church, and all the other distortions and perversions of the good news of Jesus Christ. A New Reformation would expose the lies that have blinded so many professing Christians in our time. A New Reformation would awaken our Western civilization from the false hope that we can bargain with the barbarians or persuade them to turn from their way of destruction. A New Reformation would be rooted in realism, not wishful thinking, and it would recognize that those who seek to destroy our civilization and our faith will never abandon their quest. Only the good news of Jesus Christ can melt a barbarian heart. A New Reformation would stand in opposition not only to political Islam but would also stand in opposition to the City of Man—our secular Western society, drunk on wealth, power, sexual immorality, and drugs. Much of the Islamists’ hatred of Western civilization is rooted in a mistaken belief that all of the ills of secular society are somehow caused and condoned by the church. A New Reformation would draw a clear distinction between the City of God and the City of Man. A New Reformation would show the world the face of authentic biblical Christianity—a Christianity that preaches the good news of Jesus Christ without compromise, that demonstrates truth and love in perfect balance, and that cares about people in need but refuses to back down from the truth in the face of threats and terrorism.

I was reminded of A.W. Tozer because of Youssef's passion and zeal. Youssef, like Tozer, calls it as he sees it. He can be brutally honest and confrontational. Youssef's book may prove shocking, revolting, offensive to some readers. Why? Because Youssef affirms a few things that make people squirm. He affirms that God is God and we are not. He affirms that we are all--one and all--SINNERS. He affirms that God hates sin, and justly and righteously punishes sin. He suggests--without apology--that God is punishing America as he punished Israel and Judah in the Old Testament. He clearly states that TERRORISM is our "Babylonian captivity;" that our exile isn't to be sent to a foreign country, but to have terrorists--within and without or borders--terrorize us. I can see why Youssef's message that we are in part responsible--by our sins, by our immorality, by our idolatry, by our compromising doctrines--for the rise of terrorism would be seen as either ridiculous or offensive. But is there any truth to it? That is the question at hand.

Here's what we know: God is God. We are not. God takes sin seriously regardless of whether we do or not. IT is not our thoughts of God that determine his character, his being. God, we are told time and time again, is sovereign. He is also never-changing. Is it that big a stretch to see that the God who punished nations in the Old Testament--not just Judah and Israel, but Egypt and Assyria, etc.--might still be 'punishing' nations for their idolatry? God cannot be anything but true--true to His Word, true to His Promises, true to Himself--his character, his attributes. The Word clearly reveals that a day of judgement is coming. We don't know when. We don't know how--exactly. But the day that every man, woman, and child stands before the judgment seat of Christ--is coming sooner or later. It's just a matter of when. People can try to laugh it off, try to forget it, try to deny it, try to numb it, whatever.

He writes,
History repeats itself. This was true throughout Old Testament times, and it is still true today. When we are unfaithful and will not repent, God has no choice but to hand us over to our enemies to be shaken and oppressed. Only when we realize that we are reaping the just consequences of our sin do we cry out for deliverance. Only then will He rescue us from the oppressor. God has not repealed this principle. It remains in force today. That’s why I believe we are living in times like the era of the Judges and the era of Jeremiah. I’m convinced God has handed Western civilization over to our enemies. Who are the enemies of Western civilization? The barbarians, the radical Islamists, the violent jihadists, those who are still waging a religious war against the so-called Crusaders of the West.Terrorism is our exile. The terrorists are our Babylonians. Just as God handed over a rebellious and unfaithful Israel to the Babylonian Exile, God has handed over a rebellious and unfaithful Western culture—both our secular culture and our apostate church—to be shaken by terrorism, as Israel was shaken during their captivity in Babylon. God has given us plenty of warning in His Word.

Youssef's message is not just that America is doomed and better repent while she has the chance. Though that is one aspect of his message. No, his message is that every person needs to hear the gospel. Every person--even your enemies, especially your enemies, especially those you discount or discredit as being unlovable, unworthy, a waste of time--needs to hear the gospel.

I think Youssef would fully support Tozer when he says, "Nobody is a challenge for the Holy Spirit," and "What is not built upon the Scriptures will not stand and is not of God."

Youssef talks a good deal about Islam, Isis, the refugee crisis, and the potential dangers--for America, for Europe, for all nations really--of immigration. He is not writing to cause panic or anxiety so much as he's writing to gently or not so gently wake up the church. He's writing from a historical point of view--tracing the history of Islam and the on-again, off-again conflicts with "the West" or the Christian church. His message is not: hate Muslims, fear Muslims, judge Muslims, bully Muslims. It is love Muslims, show grace and be kind, share the gospel with Muslims. Be aware of the dangers of terrorism, but don't stop seeing Muslims as individuals. I mention this because I want to be honest in my review. This content is part of the book.

His title of the book is The Barbarians Are Here. I'll let him explain--in his own words--what that title means.
What is barbarian? Why do I use this term to describe the Islamists who want to destroy us? This is not merely an exercise in name-calling or resorting to insults. I don’t use the term barbarian to hurt anyone’s feelings or to make someone out to be culturally inferior. This word has a specific meaning, and I am using it in a precise and careful way to convey a specific shade of significance. A barbarian is a person who is not part of our civilization, who wants no part of our civilization, and who seeks the conquest and destruction of our civilization. The Islamists—Muslims who seek to restructure all governments and all of society in accordance with the laws of Islam—are cultural chauvinists who see Islam’s Sharia law as vastly superior to Western secular law. They believe a totalitarian Islamic culture would be infinitely superior to the free societies of Western civilization, which are based on Judeo-Christian values. The seek the destruction of Western civilization, and that makes them—by definition—barbarians. As Christians who seek to live in obedience to the Great Commission (the command of the Lord Jesus to preach the gospel to all people in every nation, recorded in Matthew 28:19–20), we want to convert people to a saving faith in Jesus Christ—but only those who come willingly and freely. Unlike the Islamist cult of the barbarians, Christians do not make converts at the point of the sword. We do not conquer in the name of Christ through murder, war, terror, and political subversion. That is one of the many differences between the Christian faith and the cult of the Islamists.

The Barbarians are Here is first and foremost thought-provoking. It is because it is so thought-provoking that I'm recommending it.
How have we, as Christians in the twenty-first century, been unfaithful to God? Answer: by adding to—and taking away from—the crystal-clear purity of God’s Word. The Western church has adulterated the gospel. The good news of Jesus Christ is simple and transparently clear—yet we have clouded and adulterated it with false philosophies, ideologies, and doctrines. We have added business principles, psychological principles, worldly philosophies, “new revelations,” political ideologies, and human greed to the purity of the gospel message. Then we call this poisonous stew “Christianity.” Oh, we have not denied Jesus. We love Jesus. We sing songs about Jesus. We preach sermons about Jesus. We’ve just added a few “harmless” ideas to make Jesus more “relevant.” When we blend worldly philosophies and ideologies with the gospel, we are practicing friendship with the world—and making ourselves enemies of God.

Youssef spends a great deal of time in his book discussing Augustine's notion of the City of God and the City of Man. For the first time, I'm actually contemplating reading Augustine for myself, not just about Augustine. Youssef's passion is contagious!

While we have a Christian duty to oppose injustice and immorality—abortion, homosexuality, pornography, and other forms of depravity in our culture—political action can never take the place of the good news. We will never create a utopia on earth by legislating a conservative social agenda. God’s way of changing society has always involved preaching the good news of salvation—changing one heart at a time through the pure gospel. Many Christians on both the Right and the Left have lost faith in the power of the gospel to change hearts—and to change society. So instead of preaching the gospel, we have tried to force change on society through political power. We’ve tried to change laws instead of hearts.

The notion that Christians ought to mingle biblical truth with the falsehoods of other religions is spiritual poison. Jesus never said, “Tolerance for other religions will set you free,” or, “Doubt will set you free,” or, “Uncertainty will set you free.” Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31–32; emphasis added). Truth comes from the teachings of Jesus, and only the truth of Jesus will set us free.

We live in a time of moral and spiritual anarchy, when the Christian church has added so many false ideas and unbiblical notions to the gospel that the good news of Jesus Christ has become obscured and unrecognizable.

I will say one thing, however, and I mention this not because I want to discourage you from picking this one up, but I didn't always agree 100% with every little thing he said. For example, he loves, loves, loves to apply 2 Chronicles 7:14 to America. In my humble opinion, we can't just pick verses out of their context and make them fit because we want them to fit. While I think one could argue that God is good and faithful, gracious and merciful, sovereign and wise, compassionate and comforting, and therefore likely to answer the prayers of the Christian church if they pray for repentance and revival and for God's will to be done among the nations, for HIS name to be glorified, and HIS kingdom to come... I don't think one can convincingly argue that GOD PROMISED THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in his Word THAT HE WOULD ALWAYS PROTECT US BECAUSE WE'RE SUPER-SPECIAL AND GOD'S CHOSEN NATION. You can't make every verse in the Bible concerning the nation of Israel (or Judah) BE about America. This isn't an episode of Super Why. You can't just replace the word 'Israel' with the word 'U.S.A.' and be done with it and say GOD IS ON OUR SIDE. It says it right here in his word, and his word is true. God has never abandoned His people, never left us alone or forsaken us. But there is a difference between the church--the elect he has called from all nations, all countries, from the beginning to the end of time--and the concept of NATION.

Even with as long as this review has become, it still isn't doing this book justice. It covers so much.

This is a book that I wish could be air-dropped over the homes of pastors like David Platt, but I highly doubt they would bother reading it, let alone applying it to their ministries. The misconception that the wave of migration emanating from the Islamic world in the 21st century is a blessing upon nominally Christian nations in North America and Europe, is unfortunately, something that persists within the mainstream evangelical world.

Fortunately, Michael Youssef addresses and refutes this notion head-on, straight from scripture, which is the only means we have at our disposal-as Christians-with which to confront the evil, pernicious ideas that dominate our contemporary culture. He explains how the avalanche of migration-much of it couched in the form of Islamic revanchism-we're currently experiencing is a judgment upon the Laodicean church age in which we live.

Coming from a once-Christian nation (Egypt) which saw itself enveloped by Islam, Dr. Youssef understands how precarious the liberties we enjoy are, and as a Bible-believing Christian he grasps the fundamental truth that those freedoms-like everything else-are a gift bestowed upon us by The Lord.

Although the United States is not a reconstituted Israel, we were once a nation blessed by God because of the faithfulness of previous generations, including the respect even unbelieving founders had for God's word. The fact that we have lost many of the blessings this nation once enjoyed as the church has fallen into apostasy-leading the nation in its wake-isn't a coincidence.

I would recommend this book for anyone curious about how we ended up here, as well as so-called "cultural" Christians who understand that our culture is bereft but still haven't figured out how that emptiness is related to the abandonment of The Bible as a guidebook for civilization.

I enjoyed the book as it walks you through history in the Old Testament, New Testament, and even more recent world history. Sometimes it seemed a little disjointed, but overall it is certainly worth the read as it presents a convicting call and challenge for the church to return to the truthfulness of the Gospel.

I received a free copy of THE BARBARIANS ARE HERE in return for my honest review.

This wonderful book is written in an easy to understand way for everyone. I think Ministers, Elders, Lay Leaders and the rest of us can benefit from having this book in our libraries. It describes exactly who the Barbarians are and why Christians need to be alert to the main reason they are here. Oh, I would like to describe this book to you but to do so would mean you might not feel the need to read it and I would not be doing my job as a reviewer and would instead be doing the job of the writer for the cover. I was so impressed with this book that I reread many passages and then decided to highlight them for future reference. I would suggest that you purchase at least two copies of this book and perhaps more. Naturally one copy is for your library and you'll probably want to keep that book in your library. Then I would suggest that a copy be placed in your church lending library and that other copies be given to family and/or good Friends for them to read and have in their libraries. Knowledge is power and this book is full of knowledge to prepare you and me to face the Barbarians.

The Barbarians Are Here is an accurate portrayal of current events and the need for a return to biblical standards and concepts. Youssef means no disrespect in using the word Barbarians and instead states the word is used to describe those who do not want to see America flourish and are not only bent on destroying our way of life, but would kill anyone who does not bend the knee to their religion. As a veteran and Christian I was glad to see Youssef also holds to biblical standards of loving our neighbor while still holding to Godly principles. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about terrorism in America today.

Yes, this is a book about the state of America and our entire Western Civilization, and it does warn us about the barbarians who would destroy everything that countless generations have built. But what it really does is it points the finger at... me. I am to blame, because I have not spoken up. I have not served others with a Christian heart often enough. I have not witnessed; I have not prayed enough. I, and we Americans, are allowing the barbarous to find a home here among us and are giving them refuge and ammunition to use against us. I felt convicted when I read this.

It isn't the book I was seeking, but maybe I needed this book more. It is worth the time.

Dr. Youssef's book cuts like a knife and issues a stern warning to our culture that we cannot afford to ignore. Youssef grew up in Egypt and both his background and studies (a PhD in social anthropology) as well as his well-documented information about current events give his book credibility. He ties in accounts from the ancient past of the Jewish people in captivity and of the fall of the Romans with the Islamic terrorism that is rampant in our Western civilization today. He is brave enough to tell us what the media will not. I thoroughly recommend this book.

This is a difficult book to speak on the whole about. It treads carefully along the edge of equating American hopes with Christian hopes. I think the author would deny such a comment but there were too many examples that seemed to call the nation as Christians are called. This book also has astute insight to the quick progression of radical Islam across the west. Definitely not a widely PC book, still a helpful read to understand thing obscured in recent history.

This was a book I would never have picked up on my own (I’m allergic to sensationalist titles), but a friend lent it a year ago with a high recommendation and I thought I shouldn’t return it unread. It was actually surprisingly good. I might argue with a couple points, but mostly I appreciated the perspective. I was expecting fear-mongering with that title, but actually it was more about seeing the threats of terrorism in our world through an eternal perspective.

A lot of interesting and certainly not politically correct sentiments presented here with plenty of evidence to take it seriously. I'm not certain it represents the entirety of the current situation, but it is quite clear that there are "forces" at play throughout our world and society that have gravely ill intentions towards Western ideals of civilization. America can not rest on its laurels.

The Barbarians Are Here

Preventing the Collapse of Western Civilization in Times of Terrorism

by Michael Youssef

Worthy Publishing

Christian

Pub Date 07 Mar 2017

I am voluntarily reviewing The Barbarians Are Here through the publisher and Netgalley:

Michael Youseff is an American Christian but he grew up in the Muslim dominated Middle East. This book deals with the Muslim Extremeists (the Barbians). Now the extremists are being found in Western cultures.

This book reminds us that those who want to destroy us are not going away, nor are they giving up. We are reminded of the importance of keeping our eyes on the Lord.

I give The Barbarians Are Here five out of five stars.

Happy Reading.

This is quite the interesting and informative book. I read it during the winter of 2017/8. I wish I had it in front of me to give a more detailed commentary, but I am currently reading End times and the Secret Mahdi by Dr. Youssef. The following excerpts particularly stood out to me at that time:

Dr. Youssef states in the Author Preface: "Though I am an American and a Christian, I was born in the Middle East and I grew up in a Muslim-dominated culture. I have a deep love and respect for the people of the Middle East, whether Christian, Jewish, or Muslim." p. 1.

"What is a barbarian? Why do I use this term to describe the Islamists who want to destroy us? This is not merely an exercise in name-calling or resorting to insults. I don't use the term barbarian to hurt anyone's feelings or to make someone out to be culturally inferior. This word has a specific meaning, and I am using it in a precise and careful way to convey a specific shade of significance.

A barbarian is a person who is not part of our civilization, who wants no part of our civilization, and who seeks the conquest and destruction of our civilization,. The Islamists-Muslims who seek to restructure all governments and all of society in accordance with the laws of Islam - are cultural chauvinists who see Islam's Sharia law as vastly superior to Western secular law. They believe a totalitarian Islamic culture would be infinitely superior to the free societies of Western civilization, which are based on Judeo-Chrstian values. They seek the destruction of Western civilization, and that makes them - by definition - barbarians." p. 11

"Conquest by Migration
There is an Islamic tradition-going back to the time of Islam's founder, Muhammad--known as hijrah, which literally means "migration." In AD 622, Muhammad led his followers from Mecca to the city of Yathrib (now Medina). That migration was the first hijrah, and it transformed Muhammad into a political and military leader.

To this day, hijrah is one of the chief strategies for expanding Islam into other nations. Moving into a new land to spread Islam is viewed as an act of self-sacrifice that Allah will reward, according to the Quran:

"He who forsakes his home in the cause of Allah, finds in the earth many a refuge, wide and spacious: Should he die as a refugee from him for Allah and His Messenger, His reward becomes due and sure with Allah. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

"In September 2015, a leading Islamic imam, Sheikh Muhammad Ayed, stood before a Muslim audience at Jerusalem's al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in the Islamic religion, and said, 'We will breed children with them, because we shall conquer their countries, whether you like it or not, oh Germans, oh Americans, oh French, oh Italians, and all those like you. Take the refugees! We shall soon collect them in the name of the coming Caliphate!"

"Not all those seeking asylum in the West are refugees. Some have come as barbarians."

I thought this added significantly to the discussion (on our pages in the topic of multiple perpetrator stalkers experiences that the police so conveniently cop out on the victims, by reporting you to the county mental health should you attempt to report being stalked by multiple perpetrators, and worse yet actually perpetrate against the victims themselves, based on firsthand, personal experience, then a completely erroneous (in her professional behavior and assessment), know-it-all head nurse who asserted just stating you are being stalked by multiple perpetrators is grounds for involuntary commitment in Kansas.

So it is quite a convenient perpetrator-coined "focused extermination" (sex up/take down, etc.) scheme that is in place, most especially with the very ones representing the very entities that should be truly helping the victims actually being the heaviest burdens, while they attempt to claim it is the victim who is defective, not the severely corrupt system or network that has exposed itself in recent years - which is absolutely unacceptable, by the way), (be it copycat or those responsible, as it has seemed to me from the beginning of realizing some of this that those responsible have surveyed the worst human atrocities in history in order to copycat the ideas), while contemplating the spectrum of cult activity, Don Juan perpetration, breeding, forced marriages and/or relationships, criminal medical experimentation, trafficking, stalkers, terrorism, etc. - KC3

Interesting and enlightening. This book highlights the need to remain committed to the faith and the consequences of unfaithfulness and false teaching.

I struggled to get through this book. Not that I disagree with most of the author’s observations and conclusions, but I had a very hard time following his train of thought. One just didn’t lead easily to the next one. Instead, it jumped around. Sometimes he would be speaking to the church and then without warning he would be talking to the unsaved.
His main illustration ‘The City of Man vs. The City of God’ was confusing also. Sometimes, he would be using it to describe man’s spiritual relation to God and sometimes a physical City. It always took me a bit to decide how he was using each time it was introduced.
It needs to be expanded. Some ideas are just stated with no explanation of why they are correct or incorrect.
The whole book just felt scrambled and left me vaguely confused.
I received this as a free ARC from NetGalley and Worthy Publishing. No review was required. These are my honest opinions.

One of the few books I've felt a need to read for a third time; loaded with insight and wisdom for today's world. (October 2020)

This was my second reading of this book...I always get more out of it the second time. (July 2020)

In Michael Youssef's book The Barbarians Are Here: Preventing the Collapse of Western Civilization in Times of Terror the author provides insight into the motives and the mission of Islamic Extremists. According to the author, the goal of these extremists is global conquest. Motivated by ancient Muslim prophecies, they are determined to conquer the West and establish a global Muslim caliphate. He suggests that the way to counteract these extremists is to reform Islam and bring it into the modern era, but that would most likely need to happen from within Islam itself. Dr. Youssef was born in Egypt and in 1984 he fulfilled a life-long dream by becoming an American citizen. He has authored more than 35 books.

The Barbarians Are Here by Michael Youssef
A must read for anyone wanting to understand the why of Islamic terrorism in the world today. Youssef, who was born in the Middle East, knows the history and philosophy of the Islamic faith and practices. He also knows the history of Israel quite well. This enables him to observe and clarify what is happening today with what has happened in the past. Given the lessons of the past he draws conclusions about the future if Christians do not return to God first and eliminate pagan influences from Christian worship and practice. This is not an easy read and will make some people unhappy but it is reality and factual. I received a copy of The Barbarians Are Here by Michael Youssef from NetGalley and choose to give my honest review.

A disappointing read for me. After seeing the author interviewed and reading the back cover, I had higher expectations the book would focus on the subject matter of the title. What I found was a small intro into the Islamic world followed by a large dose of what path Christians should be taking. Chapter 9 for example opens with about 4 interesting pages followed by about 15 pages on Christianity. I'm a Christian and enjoy reading Christian authors on a variety of subjects. This book seemed (to me) like a good opportunity missed.

Excellent and easy-to-read, Mr. Youssef explains the problem of extreme Islamists coming into our country, without being "over the top". In addition, he exposes our failures as Christians to influence our communities and country. I highly recommend it.
