The first day of trial, the defendant bared his nicotine-stained teeth at the jury as it filed into the courtroom. His clothing, combined with his yellow teeth, oily hair, and prominent hooked nose, made him look like Lucifer’s indigent second cousin. It soon became clear to everyone, including Robin Starling, his idealistic attorney, that he would have killed Bill Hill if he had felt like it. The only question was, had he felt like it back on that brisk March day?
Devil in the Dock (A Robin Starling Courtroom Mystery Book 5) by Michael Monhollon is a kindle scout book and a pretty good court drama one too. I liked the writing style and the flow. The unfolding of the mystery was also done well. A good book to pick up if you like court drama books!
Monhollon does a nice job of developing the recurring characters with each novel in the series. His first-hand knowledge of Richmond and the law are evident and add context and relevance to the plots. Devil in the Dock is the first of the series not to rely on hijinx and conspiracy to further the story. Thus, with this volume he shines as a gifted storyteller. He writes Starling as a flawed but lovable character and her integrity is spotlighted in this story. This series has become my "go to" for light, fun, and entertaining stories when on vacation or a long weekend.
This is my first book by Michael Monhollon. I really enjoyed it and would have given it a higher rating except there was WAY too much detail about the main character's (Robin Starling) Labrador dog! Otherwise a good plot and well written.
A fun, hilarious legal thriller with a snarky lawyer named Robin Starling. Everyone seems against her when she defends a nasty piece of humanity. Great plot and characters, even down to some of the minor ones, like a judge who torment the lawyers by mispronouncing their names. Keeps you entertained from start to finish, and explains medical evidence in easy to understand terms.
Using what little information Robin had,she was able to put things together to prove Shorter innocent. I think the injury to the deceased's leg was a dead giveaway to the fact that he killed himself and set up Shorter for the murder
I receive a free copy of this novel through the Kindle Scout program. Another cover that stood out to me and it is what first drew my attention to this book. The entire story is about Robin Starling a lawyer who is compelled, by money, to represent Mr. Short, who is accused of killing his neighbor. She is a quirky character who always seems to be getting herself into more trouble as the story progresses, but she also has a way of taking it all in stride. Mr. Short is the mean, old, cranky man in the neighborhood that everyone loves to hate. It's hard to feel bad for him. The comically aspect of the story added a surprising element making the story flow naturally. I give this book 4 of 5 stars and would recommend this novel. Well done, Mr. Monhollon.
This is the first legal mystery book I read and I surprisingly enjoyed it! I feel the first half a little slow, even boring, but suddenly the action begins to increase its speed. The protagonist is an interesting character... A lawyer with a conscience, not less! The defendant is a really, really ugly kind of man who make you hate him since his first appearence. And Deacon! Really love Deek! The book is well written, the characters shows a rainbow of human emotions and the end was very satisfactory. Justice was served.
Great read! I wasn't totally sure I'd like a courtroom drama but this one kept me turning pages. The humor was good and a really nice rounded story. I certainly recommend this read. It was pretty clever
