OUT: Five Erotic Stories of Gay Self-Discovery

Rate this book
Five erotic stories of different stages of self-discovery.

Come with a Friend ~ An eighteen-old-man with a tragic life and a history of being bullied reconnects with a childhood friend who cooks up a scheme to take revenge on the bully of their youth. But is revenge the real reason for Jason wearing a gown to the prom? Or could it be love?

Christmas in July ~ Straight-guy Sam spends a weekend in a campground to entice his kids to hang out with him for Christmas in July. His ex-wife cuts the weekend short, leaving him plenty of time to hang out with Larry, the fortysomething gay man in the camper next door. Beer and Larry’s mildly dominant personality leads them into his camper. And then his bedroom.

Come on Down ~ While fooling around with the much younger Caylin, James has a flashback to a gay experience when he was younger, prompting his girlfriend to arrange a threesome with an old friend. How far will James go with another man this time?

Gay Greenhorn on the F/V Lost Agnes ~ Inspired by the song Midnight Train to Georgia, Carson travels to Alaska to try crab fishing, but the Lost Agnes is too much for him. He meets Artie, a deckhand, and they fall hard and fast for each other. When life on the Bering Sea threatens to swallow him up, Carson returns to Georgia, to the life he knows. But Artie can’t live without him. He has to choose life on a crab boat or life with Carson in Georgia.

Love and a Hate Crime ~ Thad is twenty, but he’s slow. When his bully, Jimmy, tells him to “fuck up the queers,” the gay couple in their 60s who live down the block, Thad trusts that in return, Jimmy will leave him alone. When he breaks into their house, he witnesses the couple making love, arousing him and terrifying him at the same time. What if Thad is queer too?

I have been a fan of well-written erotic fiction since the early days of the Literotica.com website. The first author that drew me in was Tx Tall Tales, particularly his hot group sex story, The Perfect Game.

I wrote my first piece of fiction at age thirty-four. It was a short piece of erotica, called Señor Sexy, handwritten on graph paper. The story was so bad, I stashed in my pajama drawer where it rests to this day, buried under nightgowns I never wear and other assorted pajama drawer items. Wink, wink.

I didn't write again until I was on the brink of forty, bored by the long-term regular-job project I was working on. I started with two “enhanced” journal entries, stories that started with reality and ended up in fantasy land. I didn’t bother to tell my husband before submitting them to Literotica to share with the smut-reading world, even though he played a starring role in both stories. The feedback on the first two stories was encouraging, and I experienced a life-changing revelation: Making shit up was a helluva lotta fun.

When my first completely fictional story idea hit, I thought it was the only one. It was Hurricane Season, a completely ridiculous story about a gullible woman who accepts a weekend in paradise as a prize, and finds that she has to play with the man and two women who planned the trip. My favorite part of the story is the twist at the end. As I wrote the story, I wondered what Tx Tall Tales would think of it. It seemed to me to be similar to some of his early stories. (I had to wait two years, but I found out what he thought.)

After that silly story, I surprised myself several more times when new, completely different stories popped up in my head. As someone that never envisioned writing a single story, having seven to my name was a thrill, but the long-term real-world project was still looming over my head, so I put my writer shoes away for a year and a half.

In the summer of 2013, I made my way back to Literotica, just in time for the Nude Day Contest. I used that contest to pull a story out of me that had been playing at me for the whole year and a half between writing stints: Bare Naked: Skater’s Waltz. I was fixated on the idea of ice skating in the nude. That story doesn’t get a lot of attention, but it’s still one of my favorites.

The most surprising part of the journey from reader to writer has been the quality of the education I’ve found from a free erotica website. I met authors there with skills as sharp as the pros, and they were willing to share what they’d learned. I’ve learned a million things since the first time I sent a story to M.S. Tarot for a beta read. He had major revisions to suggest on my Halloween story, Jeffrey’s Murderer. The next story he read for me had half as many suggestions, and my storytelling skills continue to improve thanks to his help.

When I went back to writing in the summer of 2013, I put out a request to other Literotica authors to suggest stories for my reading list. Tx Tall Tales shocked the hell out of me by asking if I’d care to beta read his stories. I’m not impressed by celebrities, but I was star struck. Not long after those early beta reads, TTT read my story Hurricane Season. (I was right. He liked it.) With each story I write and TTT reads, I learn something new about tightening my writing.

Countless others I met at Literotica have influenced my writing as well. Second Circle, Bucky Duckman, AMoveableBeast, J. Kendall Dane, JC Winchester, Privates1stClass, ILienBagby are just a few. I wasn’t surprised to make friends there. I was surprised how much I learned.

I have a regular, mundane life with a full-time job, a husband, three kids, and two cats. Writing smut keeps me balanced.

I was offered the opportunity to review this before its official release, and let me tell you, I jumped on it. It's not that I'm a particular a fan of gay male erotica ... like most guys of my generation, I was unfairly socialized to be creeped out by homosexuality. And while I'm enlightened enough now that I'd definitely do 1993 Jason Scott Lee if he came looking for me in a time machine, my boat is generally not floated by depictions of gay sex.

But Patient Lee has such a masterful grasp of character and such finesse at writing human sensuality that I knew I would enjoy a collection of her stories, gay or straight, and that the subject matter of this one would probably deal yet another blow to the idiotic but stubborn uneasiness I've been saddled with by my youth in the 20th century South with respect to thoughts of gay sex.

I'm glad to say I was correct on all counts.

First and foremost, the stories in this book are about people, not about gay guys. Sure, all the people happen to turn out to either be gay or have an affinity for gay sex, but the point is to carry us on a series of human journeys into self-discovery, to take us places most of us have never been - and yet, places most of us will find familiar and compelling and identifiable at the same time.

(Mild spoilers in this paragraph) Each of these stories features some element of tremendous discomfort - a teenage boy wrestling with the demons of having watched his mother killed by his father; a divorced parent tempted into gay experimentation in circumstances we know will lead to public exposure; a man forced to admit to his girlfriend that he's had a lifelong secret desire to have sex with another man; a pair of fishermen falling in love on a crab boat where the close quarters might get them beaten to a pulp, fired, or maybe thrown overboard if they're found out; and a mentally impaired young man bullied into invading a gay couple's home for the purpose of committing a hate crime.

By immersing us deeply and sympathetically into these situations, Lee gives even the straight, sheltered hetero reader some sense of the fear or shame or self-loathing that might come with a life spent hiding one's sexuality from the world, or even from one's self. And yet in each case, there's a suffusion of hope and potential happiness undergirding the inner and external conflicts that task the characters. Story after story, Lee nurtures and tends to that potential until it blooms into full beauty - sometimes through passionate encounters, but sometimes through the simple sense of liberty or understanding that she gifts upon her protagonists and readers alike.

Finishing up the last of the volume today, I found myself emotionally overwhelmed, blinking back tears, and very much in awe of this author's brilliance.

As for the sex, Lee shows an unending capacity to produce heartfelt word-sculptures of such pure allure and arousal that at one point, I even found myself attracted to my number-one "no way, never" sex act and thinking, "Well ... maybe ..." (Not sure I can get away with naming it here, but if you want a hint, it involves no genitalia.)

If you have any appreciation of gay male erotica, you should snap this book up immediately. On the other hand, if the genre makes you uncomfortable, you should still snap it up.

One way or another, it will speak to you.

Hot sex and the bare-arse truth..... Disconcerting. That's what the reality depicted here is. On the brink - the threshold of a frightening new sexuality. Frighteningly exciting. The threshold of pain and pleasure. To come out of hiding from one's own desires.... These stories take us there and for keeps. There is no turning back once over the brink. And, in fact, there was never really a choice as nature simply takes its course... This is powerful reading - shocking and uncomfortable for a straight guy, but riveting. All excellent stand-alone stories, but a special mention of the slamming prejudice in ‘Love and a Hate Crime’. Awesome.

I just read OUT: Five Erotic Stories of Gay Self-Discovery, and it's everything I love about a Patient Lee book. OUT is a collection of five of her best gay romances. One thing I love about this book is that she begins each story with its origins, where she came up with the idea for it in the first place. Another thing I love about Patient Lee books is the humanity with which she infuses her characters. She allows us to slip into their skins and walk around for a while, getting the feel of what it is to be a gay man on a "journey of discovery." OUT is beautiful, sensual, heart-felt story-telling at its best! FIVE HUGE STARS!

Patient Lee is the mistress of erotic realism. She develops her characters with so much love and craft they and their story feel like people we know and love rather than fiction. Patient's men are not cringe-worthy stereotypes homosexual characters are usually reduced to. They are normal, down to earth people who happen to be gay or bisexual. That collection of coming out stories captures all the awkwardness, anxiety, fears and longing behind a first-time experience and dresses them in unexpected sensuality, passion and pretty often, true love. Have in mind that most of these stories deal with some dark and heavy themes such as depression, bullying, suicide wish, hate crimes and homophobia. However, don't let that stop you as all the stories also have an optimistic vibe about them and leave the reader feeling happy and uplifted.
I loved each of the stories individually but the one that will stay with me the most was the one the author describes as her best work, Gay Greenhorn on the F/V Lost Agnes. She really does a wonderful job of balancing lighter humor, dramatic elements, and scorching hot erotic chemistry. Even if gay romance and erotica are not your usual cup of tea, I'm sure you'd find something to love about these plots as they deal with universal themes of love and acceptance everyone can relate to.

Such a great collection!

Real and hot and amazing and just... wow!

I read a lot of books like this but it is so seldom that I find one where the level of storytelling-mastery outpaces the “erotica” theme with serious events and real people... which is why I am now 100% obsessed with everything this author has every written!

Ok, I love it when the characters in a book feel genuine and like they are speaking from their own distinctive, authentic voices right off the bat. To me, a great story is all about great characters and each piece in this collection has got that in spades! This is the kind of writing where you “get” these people (even though I know they’re probably not based off real people) because they seem so real.

... When that happens, it makes the story come to life. It makes the hot-wonka-wonka scenes more real and vivid and, at the end, you just kinda sit back and fan yourself. Everything I want out of great erotica.

My favorite story in the collection was Gay Greenhorn (which is set on a crabbing boat in Alaska), where two men are dealing with being gay and attracted to each other in a setting where that it NOT okay. It was honesty and gritty but very subtle and nuanced at the same time and, BTW, so very HOT! Love it! Would highly recommend this book!

This is a collection of MM erotic stories. More than that, though, these are stories of discovery. Men discovering new realms of sexual pleasure, and, as a result, discovering things about themselves. It's a really fun and uplifting collection. The stories are:

"Come With a Friend" -- I've reviewed this story as a stand-alone, so I won't say much more here except to mention that this is a great, great story.

"Christmas in July" -- this one brings the sweetness. It's a tender story of a wounded man finding support and a place to belong.

"Come on Down" -- this one brings the silliness. The Price is Right tie-ins might make you roll your eyes, but the sex scenes are scorching hot. A "F" is added to the MM here for some truly engaging three-way action.

"Gay Greenhorn" -- a brilliant story. I've reviewed this also as a stand-alone, so I'll only mention that this story alone is worth the 5-star rating.

"Love and a Hate Crime" -- this story is deep. We see homophobic bias through the eyes of a mentally challenged man. In his simple wisdom, he wonders why he's supposed to hate "the queers" just because they love each other. It's a powerful message and very nicely sums up the attitude of this collection: Love is Love.

Out official
Although these books are the first I've read in the gay fiction genre, I've read several stories from Patient Lee and loved them all. She doesn't write "gay stories" or "lesbian stories", Mrs. Lee writes stories of love about real people in real situations. She finds the impossible and somehow manages to bring the characters together in satisfying endings which aren't only probable, in the end you believe everything is going to be okay even if she doesn't say it outright. She finds acceptance from where there once was none and makes you believe in the human race again. Out is no different. In this five story collection, Patient brings you five different views of men coming to grips with their own sexuality at different times in their life. A teen. A divorce. A bisexual man, a fisherman and a disabled boy. Each man faces his own demon's but like the rest of us, they also crave love and acceptance. Open your mind and understand, Patient Lee will show you the way: Love is Love. Five sparkling stars and a hope that the world can see what I do. Perhaps the most wonderful aspect of this collection is the few paragraphs Patient writes before each story telling you why she wrote them. I know a little more about her mind now. I'd love to know more.
Come With A Friend
This was my favorite story in the collection. I couldn't put it down. Young people dealing with sexuality is hard enough but throw depression in there and it becomes impossible. The premise is simple (read it, no spoilers here) but as a reader you can see no possibility of the author finding a happy ending in the midst of smoldering (palpable) depression killing this gender confused youth. You know misery is coming and you're wrong. PL does it again and you believe in love again. This one put me on the edge of tears and left me smiling. Five beautiful stars.
Christmas In July
Each of us acquires baggage in our lives, good and bad. Marriage, children, divorce and even confusion about your own sexuality. You would think sex and sexual desire would be easy but we all know it's not. Patient spins a story of two middle aged men trying to discover who they are and who they want to be. Together they both realize they can live again. To love and find another who can love them in turn, what else do you want? You already knew there would be five stars, didn't you Mrs. Lee?
Come On Down
Being gay is one thing, desiring both men and women is another altogether. Few of us are fortunate enough to find a solution to the craving of two genders. The twisting thoughts in your mind determine who you are and how you see the world. In another example of exceptional writing, Patient unveils a solution for one man. She shows the character's conflict and forces him to acknowledge who he is and who he wants to be. Five stars again. I'm a PL addict.
Gay Greenhorn On The F/V Lost Agnes
A crab boat in the Bearing Sea may experience a lot of things but a gay relationship isn't going to be one of them. Right? Wrong. Patient shows that love can bloom between men in the middle of a setting openly hostile to gay men. Though her words you see the world and experience every touch. Love can be found anywhere. Mrs. Lee will show you how. All you have to do is look through the stars. All five of them.
Love and A Hate Crime
I never saw this coming. I was worried how she would unravel this mess. A hate crime in process and an intellectually challenged young man. Too many ends. To messy. Not for Mrs. Lee. I should have had faith. She never lets me down. My second favorite story in the collection and a perfect ending to the book. Five more stars for your collection Mrs. Lee. Thank you for the worlds you have created.

Once again Patient Lee shows that she is a master story crafter when it comes to this, arguably her specialty. Each story in this book brings alive simple but wonderfully complex characters. Breathing realistic life, emotional heartbreak, and breath into their stories. A compelling collection. Bravo.

Come with a Friend: Lifelong friendship builds slowly over years, growing into a comfortable closeness that mimics family love. And while this story is seen through the eyes of Jason to me the main character here was always equaled by Timmy. You only see his life through the eyes of others. The bullying he endures by Kevin, the compassion of the tom-girl Simone but then here comes Jason (Kari.) In Jason’s eyes, you get to see Tim as more than a back row character. He comes alive in the story because of Jason and his observations. Very nice work.

Christmas in July: Emotional, pure, silly, sexually charged fun. A delightful read, with characters you sympathize with. Larry’s life had settled into a routine while Sam’s life was still in turmoil from his divorce. Both were in need of a friend but neither was looking. Tossed together in a campground, they were both keeping the other at arm’s length at first. But then a few beers and swapped commiseration bring them closer together. Then toss in some kids and “The Bitch” and you have an awesome story.

Come on Down: Dedicated to the memory of a wonderful author, slyc_willie this story shows the imagination and creativity of Patient Lee to its fullest. The character of James shows the classic sexual discovery story in a very nice but odd touch, yodeling. His girlfriend’s, Caylin understanding his need and accepting it was a delight after the previous story’s denouncement by the wife.

Gay Greenhorn on the F/V Lost Agnes: Possibly the best GM story she had done, Patient Lee throughout the stops and created a so very believable take on the job shown on the TV show Deadliest Catch. Crab fishing on the Bering Sea. Spectacular storytelling, wonderful characters and a touch of heartfelt romance in a harsh setting give this story the overall rounded splendor it displays. Beyond excellent work.

Love and a Hate Crime: Told through the eyes of a simple man this, as the title says a story of love, has all the childlike wonder of the holiday seasons. Seeing the world in ways that most don’t … and in ways that too many do. The manipulation of innocence, Thad by Jimmy is so realistic it burns the heart to read. And through those innocent eyes, Patient Lee brings to light a so often asked question. Why do we hate? Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful work, PL.

Without a doubt, this author gets better with every story she tells and this book shows just that. “Bravo, lovely.” MST

This collection of stories will do one of two things: it will make you a Patient Lee fan if you aren't already, or if - like me - you already know Patient Lee is one of the best in the biz, your belief will be reinforced five times over.

As I have come to expect from Patient Lee, all of these stories are unique and thoughtful. No cookie-cutter characters here, and no cheesy fabricated problems either. All the men in this book face some kind of big life decision, or turning point. They each discover something new about themselves, and it is this - rather than sex, although there's plenty of that too! - that drives the stories and makes them unforgettable.

Patient Lee takes real issues - transgender teens, divorced dads, guys who can't "come out" because of their jobs, homophobes - and brings them to the reader as individuals, people we like and come to know. That kind of connection is rare, especially in the erotica genre. Even if gay love stories don't make your pulse race, I recommend this collection simply for the excellence of the storytelling.

Reading a Patient Lee book is always a treat. Unique characters, realistic settings, and imaginative plots. This book contains five stories. These two were my favorites:

Christmas in July: I could picture the campground she described. I loved both Sam and Larry, they were very funny together and had sizzling hot chemistry. I chuckled through this story.

Gay Greenhorn on the F/V Los Agnes: I loved how this story was set on a crab fishing boat. I could feel the waves and the close proximity in the sleeping quarters. Carson and Artie trying to hide the relationship just made it even hotter! Very sexy and touching scenes between the two men.

Looking forward to more books from Patient.

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I wasn't sure at first this book would be for me as I don't make it a point to read about gay males but after reading just a few lines it became clear this book was so much more than that. This book spoke to me in ways I cannot begin to describe. The author takes the reader through the characters' feelings and thoughts about their sexuality. You really feel as if you can relate to the characters even if you are not personally homosexual or bisexual. This book was much more than a treatise on sexuality it's a book about self discovery which something EVERYONE can relate to. I would definitely recommend this to everyone who was ever curious about their own sexuality or just struggling through life's journey. Great book, Patient!

What I enjoy about Patient Lee’s writing is that she develops characters that are complex and multidimensional. Yes, sex (and the characters’ sexuality) is part of each story in this collection, but the characters are not defined by this sex. The characters are tormented yet compassionate, fun-loving yet sympathetic, enigmatic yet accepting. In each story, we get to see how these characters engage with the people around them, and that’s where Ms. Lee’s gift in writing shines through. By the end of each of these stories, I felt as if I had known the characters all my life. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from this author.

OUT is one of the best love story collection I've read in a while. That surprised even me. This book is about more than just sex... although I have to be honest and say I found the erotic scenes incredibly hot! But the Love between the characters is what makes it so enjoyable to read, even for women. Fascinating. My favorite was Lost Agnes, I was touched, and the way it was narrated was superb. Patient Lee's characters are so well developed, you feel for them, which makes the stories even more powerful. Loved it.
