Keeping secrets from your mate is a struggle—especially when he can read your mind.
Sergeant is doing the night security shift to give his mate, Dillon, a break. On his rounds, he smells a stranger wolf and heads into the forest to investigate. What he finds is disturbing—and what happens next even more so. With events out of is control, he’s at a loss as to what to do. What the hell is going on?
Dillon wakes knowing something is wrong. He follows Sergeant’s trail into the forest and realizes that his mate is in deep trouble. A plane ride later, and with a few Highgate shifters by his side, Dillon has to find Sergeant fast—before any harm comes to him.
After a bizarre experience, Sergeant is free to go back to Highgate, but there is a stipulation. He must not tell Dillon—or anyone—what happened to him until the time is right. Sergeant detests keeping things from his life partner, but there is no alternative, and hiding secrets is what he must do. At the same time, Sergeant has a massive decision to make—one that will affect not only himself and Dillon, but the Highgate pack and all known shifter wolves, as well as other shifter species.
The burden is a heavy one, and Sergeant can’t wait to offload it. Time is holding him back, though, and he must wait before he can give an answer to something he never would have dreamed he’d have to contemplate.

Sydney has always enjoyed writing. “There’s something about losing yourself in another world, where the real one ceases to exist and all your dreams and wishes can be placed on the page—dreams for a better planet where love isn’t questioned but accepted by all.” When Sydney isn’t writing, there’s plenty of reading to be done. “I can’t imagine not reading every day. It would be weird not to have a book to hand because I’ve always had one nearby. Life without reading isn’t something I’d like to contemplate. The thought brings me out in hives.” Sydney lives in a peaceful area where the hustle and bustle of the city doesn’t figure. “I left city life years ago. Too stressful for me. I prefer listening to the swish of leaves on the trees instead of tyres on tarmac. The twittering of birds instead of the chatter of people. Alone time to reflect and ponder is a must. A small portion of every day spent by myself is vital to my sanity and soul.”
This was a bit of a letdown, especially for my expectations based on the blurb.
It started out well enough, with intrigue about why Sergeant is being kidnapped, and what's happening, and what's going on, but that then had a weird explanation, which basically ruined the book for me.
During the kidnapping and his subsequent freedom, Sergeant is told that he mustn't share whatever he knows with anyone, not even his mate Dillon. Now, the mythology in this series has the mated shifters share their thoughts at all times, speaking to their mates in their minds, and it's a bit unsettling to Dillon that Sergeant is keeping him out, and it's even more disturbing to Sergeant that he has to do that.
There's mucho sexy times inside, and while I enjoyed that, it felt at times a bit like a filler, because the real plot of this installment wasn't meaty enough to carry the book.
When Sergeant is given permission to share the secret with his mate, and the reader also finds out what's going on, the reason behind it was a complete letdown. It didn't make a whole lot of sense, to be honest, but since I love this series, I will continue to read about these wolves.
It was nice to see characters from the previous books as well in this story, since it's always nice to revisit.
** I received a free copy of this book from its publisher. A positive review was not promised in return. **
This was a fun quick read!!! I really enjoyed how even though nothing too bad happened there was some excitement in this book.
Book six in the highgate series is based around Sergeant and his mate Dillion. Sergeant decides to give Dillion the night off of patrol and even though he hates working night patrol because he would normally be bored, there is something in the air and Sergeant is about to find out first hand exactly what is coming his way.
Once Sergeant is kidnapped Dillion waste no time rounding up the troops to go in to where Sergeant is being held. With his loss of mind connection half through Sergeants kidnapping, Dillion has no idea what kind of state he is going to find him in.
Once Dillion arrives at the destination that Sergeant is being held and Sergeant is released Dillion is still not able to connect with Sergeant through their mind connection and that sets Dillion's nerves on edge because he knows that something is not right and he knows that Sergeant is keeping something from him.
Sergeant would love nothing more then to be able to able to tell Dillion what happened to him while being held captive but he knows he is not aloud too into the time is right. The problem is he needs Dillion more then ever in order to do what needs to be done. Sergeant has to decide what is more important, keeping his secret or letting Dillion in and letting him help him decide what is best to do.
This was a short story but it was a really sweet look into Sergeant and Dillion's life. Into their connection with one another. It was nice reading a book that is on the serious side but at the same time was laced with lots of love and happiness. It was nice reading a book that shows such a connection between two people that they will do everything in their power to protect and support the one's that they love. Great read!!!
Was given this galley copy for free for an open and honest review.
