Even the paths to happy endings have bumps in the road. That’s what James and Mandy Hardy find out the hard way when an idyllic summer day turns into tragedy and Mandy is left shocked and horrified by the death of someone close to her. As Mandy struggles with her grief, James is left to pick up the pieces and question the reason for the attack. As he works overtime to make Mandy feel better – and safe – the elaborate pieces of a long-simmering feud slip into place and an enemy no one saw coming grabs Mandy in broad daylight. Instead of racing to her rescue, James falls apart as he struggles to find out who took his wife and where she’s being held. For her part, Mandy wakes up in a nightmare and when she realizes who is in control of her destiny – and why – her emotional struggles multiply. James’ family rallies around him as they work to uncover the clues. It’s all hands on deck for a daring rescue attempt – but that’s only part of the story. When all is revealed, a revenge plot that was literally years in the making will be revealed … and someone the Hardys have known for a long time will be unveiled as the one enemy they might not be able to overcome. In the end, the two factions will face off … and only one will get the ultimate payback.
This book was so emotional it literally brought tears to my eyes. It was so heartbreaking and sad. A tragedy occurs and it impacts Mandy and James enormously. The family close ranks around them. Just when they think they are coming to terms with what happens, Mandy is taken by someone who had been planning it for literally years. James literally falls apart. His family try to help but he pushes everyone away. Will they get Mandy back and Will James and Mandy get over what happened? This book was a torrent of emotion. It was heartbreaking to see James literally fall apart. I had an inclining of who the person was due to what the tragedy is and from the person's behaviour in previous books. The climax of the book was mind blowing. Absolutely loved it. I would have to say this is my favourite book of the series.
When Heidi asks Mandy to be her matron of honour after Clint proposes she's truly touched. Delighted for the couple and the women head out for lunch but as Heidi twirls with excitement two shots ring out across the patio and in her moment of joy Heidi is gone.
Mandy is in shock, unable to speak and covered with Heidi's blood and brains she's lost in a world of hurt and guilt.
Unable to face the fear that Mandy may be the target James ensures Mandy is protected at Heidi's funeral which causes Clint to verbally attack Mandy blaming her for Heidi's death.
Mandy can't face returning to work at the court and James takes her to hand in her notice waiting for her outside, but Mandy has vanished.. there's no trace of her on the security footage which has been hacked.
I'm not an emotional reader, and the author doesn't often evoke intense of emotion in her writing, but daaang, the beginning of the book....and the very end. Boom, gets you right in the feels. I read before bed, and I honestly couldn't go to sleep for a couple hours I was so hit with the emotion the beginning of the story conveyed. The book was inline with the rest of the series, and as usual was an entertaining read. I have read all the author's books, and I love 'em all.
From the moment the "incident" occurred, I knew who and why. What surprised me is that that Author went there. James should have trusted his gut from the beginning instead of being so caught up in the drama and he would have seen this coming from a mile away. To fully understand the story and it's dynamics, you really have to read this series from the beginning. Being in the corrections field and educated on PREA, I felt some of Mandy's statements crossed a line. I know that the Author favors Mandy and James, but my favorite character has always been Grady. Without him those two would have never made it as far as they have. I'm looking forward to the end of this series and full closure of all the characters.
Phenomenal! I had a suspicion of who would be involved in this story from the description, but I'll admit I didn't expect it to be quite like this. James and Mandy are my favorite and I obviously love any story centered around them. Mandy and James continue to grow as individual characters and as a couple, and it is really moving to see. I was also so happy to see Grady play such a prominent role, along with Judge McIntosh and Peter. I would have liked a little more Sophie though--it felt like she was barely in the story.
This story is a little darker than the rest, but I did like how it ended on a positive note. I can't believe there are only two books left in this series! I am not ready to say goodbye to these amazing characters!
Well that was the best Hardy brothers book of the series so far. Now i know we are nearing the end of the series which is why this story was so important even if it was darker than normal I had been waiting for it and wow it was worth waiting for. The author writes from the heart the main characters all step up a huge level in this story and the emotions are well earth shattering it was an amazing read.
Sometimes I wonder how much can James and Mandy with stand. Since they have been married they have experienced more tragedy than any normal couple but their love is still strong. Who would have thought what happened between Clint and Heidi, I didn't see that one coming. All and all this is a great series.
I love the Hardy brothers series please keep writing about them
I laugh when they are witty and I cry when they cry. So I always have tissues by me. I hate to put the book down until I finally get to the conclusion. Thank you for your stories.
Awesome story! Can't wait for the next. Great add to the series! Keeps getting better and better! These guys are hilarious, emotional and fun of twist and turns!
