3.5 stars. What I liked about this book was its focus on images presenting man both in harmony and in conflict with nature. The selection of pictures is mostly top-notch, and the vast majority of pictures are images not ever available to those not adventure photographers.

My biggest complaint with this book was the frequent focus on man rather than nature. Motion blur is frequently used, making a great action shot but not a particularly inspiring scene of the environment. Long exposures aren't always my thing either, as I have always thought it both cliche and somewhat arrogant to thing that is an "improvement" of the natural world. Lest one wax nostalgic about the pre-Photoshop era of photography, there are plenty of double exposures and sandwiched images to dispel the notion of its purity.

All in all, I found about a quarter of the images were truly breathtaking, half were interesting if not overly compelling, and the remaining quarter were vain or cliched.
