The New Allergy Solution: Supercharge Resistance, Slash Medication, Stop Suffering

Rate this book
One of America’s top allergy doctors offers a revolutionary, full-body approach to diagnosing, preventing, and treating allergies—in many cases, for good.

Millions of Americans currently suffer from allergies, and the rate is growing. Climate change, globalization, air pollution, and oversanitization of the environment in the early years of life are just a few of the causes that, taken together, have introduced new allergens into our environment that are wreaking havoc and causing needless suffering.

This “new allergen marketplace” requires a new allergy solution. According to Dr. Clifford W. Bassett, traditional remedies focus on treating symptoms but leave allergy sufferers vulnerable to continued bouts of misery. Dr. Bassett argues that when we consider a person’s genetics, environment, and overall health, we can more effectively identify—and take appropriate action to forestall—symptoms before they even begin.

For the first time, Dr. Bassett presents the unique, integrative approach he’s used in his Manhattan offices for two decades to vanquish allergy symptoms for countless individuals. In addition to explaining what allergy is (and isn’t) and identifying key triggers—from nuts to gluten to the nickel commonly used in cell phones—Dr. Bassett offers both medical and nonmedical alternatives to treatment, and specific, proactive steps to protect against common allergens. Allergens are here to stay, but with The New Allergy Solution , your life need no longer be ruled and ruined by allergy. The New Allergy Solution strives to enhance your well-being through strategies for a greater sense of control, giving you more freedom to do what you love.

For anyone who has a really good allergist, this book doesn't necessarily present many novel concepts, or at least the allergist that I saw for desensitization shots gave a lot of this information to me. However, it does present a lot of preventive measures and helpful reminders when preparing your life to live better in regards to allergies. The writing style was great and overall a book to keep around to reference when moving to a new apartment/home; cleaning your space and even gardening.

The New Allergy Solution by Don Clifford Bassett was a timely win right at the beginning of outdoor allergy season. It is a compendium of information on indoor and outdoor allergies as well as skin and food allergies.

I would like to share a few tidbits of information I garnered while reading.

"...kids raised for their first year around two or more dogs and/or cats were less allergically sensitized to such animals and less sensitized generally later in childhood." (p. 8)

Pages 18 and 19 of the book contain an Allergy I.Q. test that is valuable.

Hay fever sufferers should "pretreat" with medications before the season starts. (p.49)

"Ragweed pollen has been measured at over 10,000 feet in the air, and 400 miles out to sea." (p. 82)

Allergy friendly plants and unfriendly plants for the garden are listed on pages 96-98.

Skeeter syndrome is an allergic response to the bite of a mosquito. It can progress for eight or more hours and may require several days for resolution. (p. 105)

A "Stop the Bite" Action plan is provided for treatment. (p. 106)

Four ways to reduce the odds of getting a mosquito bite are listed on page 106.

Pages 122 and 123 list indoor plants that help clean the air in a home.

The New Allergy Solution is a must have for allergy sufferers. I learned a lot by reading it cover-to-cover, but it is organized in a format that will make it useful as an on the spot reference when any type of allergy develops.

Thank you GoodReads for offering Dr. Bassett's book in a giveaway. I can only offer the book the highest compliment above rating it with five stars. This book is what I refer to as "a keeper". It has earned itself an easily accessible spot on my bookshelf.

A good source of information for those looking to re-evaluate their current allergy strategy. The book covers a multitude of topics, from exploring the possible causes behind allergies, to correct diagnosis, defining allergy and it's types, as well as ways to manage and reduce symptoms. Dr. Bassett also discusses the varying theories on the cause behind the exponential increase in allergies and allergy prevention, and the differences between allergy, intolerance, and sensitivity.

While I may adhere to a more holistically-minded philosophy than the author, I appreciate Dr. Bassett's initiative to reduce, and even eliminate if possible, unnecessary medications, while considering safer, and (whenever possible) more natural options for managing allergy symptoms and boosting overall health. I think this book kind of bridges the gap between allopathic and naturopathic approaches, which I really like, by trying to find the right balance of effective medicine through the means of the least-harmful solutions possible.

With that said, there were a few issues I wanted to address in regards to the book, the first one being the near-continuous endorsement of steroids without any mention of the dangers of prolonged use- kind of important, since long-term use of steroids can be linked to very serious health conditions like cancer, osteoperosis, cardiovascular disease, and more. This is something that is really near and dear to my heart, since my father suffers allergic asthma / chronic bronchitis and relies on a steroidal inhaler, which we are trying to find an alternative solution for. Yes, it helps him to breathe, but I'm very worried about the potential negative effects it may be having on his health as well. (On a very positive note, one of the naturopathic options mentioned in this book, therapeutic massage / chiropractic adjustment, has been so profoundly helpful in increasing his lung function/capacity that I have no question as to its validity. (For those interested in learning why/how chiropractic adjustments help asthma I HIGHLY recommend Dr. John Bergman's video series on asthma: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKtTpf... (btw I'd love to see Dr. Bassett connect/collaborate with Dr. Bergman and other naturopaths in the future!))

The other issue I really wanted to comment on is on the subject of vaccines -a rather touchy subject at present, unfortunately. The book was pretty vague in this department for me, especially since the issue of allergens being *in* vaccines was touched on at least once with the author asking a very interesting question- if my child has an egg allergy, should they receive vaccines which were created in eggs? While I certainly understand the importance of addressing such a question, to me the ultimate question really shouldn't be whether the vaccine(s) will create a reaction with an allergy that is already there, but whether the vaccine could actually be inducing the allergy in the first place. It's really a "chicken or the egg" scenario (no pun intended). In fact, the amount of evidence that points to vaccines creating food allergy is astounding, and I was pretty let down that this book doesn't even breathe a word on the subject- especially since this is not a new concept, but something that has in fact been proven time and again in numerous studies throughout the decades. (Perhaps the author is simply unaware of the studies, but I wanted to add this information to my review because I feel it's so important.) To begin with, it's hard to ignore that at least half of the top 8 food allergens are/were used in vaccines (cow's milk (casein), eggs, peanut, soy) not to mention other food allergens like yeast, beef, and gelatin. Studies show the proteins of these foods, present in the vaccines in trace amounts, when presented with an adjuvant (especially aluminum) trigger an immune reaction to the proteins resulting in allergy. This was most recently presented by five respected immunologists from the University of Virginia at a recent seminar for the World Allergy Organization, who theorized that aluminum adjuvants in routine childhood immunizations could be contributing to increasing rates of allergies to common foods such as peanuts, egg, milk, wheat, soy, almond, fish, and seafood. Aluminum is already known to contribute to the stimulation of IgE (immunoglobulin E) in mice. (see http://www.jacionline.org/article/S00...).

Vaccine causation of beef allergy has been proven in studies in both children (Beef allergy in children Fiocchi A, Restani P, Riva E. Department of Pediatrics, San Paolo Biomedical Institute, University of Milan Medical School, Milan, Italy http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/...) and dogs, which was then proven to lead to autoimmune disorders (“Effects of Vaccination on the Endocrine and Immune Systems of Dogs, Phase II”, Purdue University, November 1,1999, at http://www.omegadanes.com/purdue_univ... "Vaccine-Induced Autoimmunity in the Dog", Advances in Veterinary Medicine Vol 41, pp 733-747 HARM HOGENESCH, JUAN AZCONA-OLIVERA, CATHARINE SCOTT-MONCRIEFF, PAUL W. SNYDER, AND LARRY T. GLICKMAN http://www.sardogs.com/health_purdue_...)

Other studies are published in which scientists intentionally gave mice food allergies by injecting both the food protein with aluminum adjuvant, thereby (albeit unintentionally) proving causation (http://www.em-consulte.com/article/10...). And the list goes on.

This information is more of an aside than a critique of Dr. Bassett's book, and I understand if the author doesn't wish to open himself up to criticism in the hotly contested subject of vaccination, however to remain silent on the issue entirely when it is so clearly central to the issue of food allergies is borderline negligent in my opinion. Nevertheless, the allergy issue is much broader and more complex than this lone aspect, and as a whole I did appreciate the wealth of information presented in the book, which is why I opted to give it 4 stars.

*BTW I'm sure I open myself up to a host of hateful comments from other goodreads members as a result of this review, but I'm hopeful that more professionals and specialists, as well as laypeople, in the industry will sit up and take note of the research that is already out there on the subject of vaccine induced allergy in order that change might take place in the form of more thorough and transparent informed consent, health research, and preventative health care recommendations.*

This accessible, research-based book is not as new or exciting as the title makes it sound, but it is a solid, informative, and empowering collection of information about allergic conditions, their causes, and how to mitigate them.

There is some good information in this book, and it gives a general overview of what allergies are and the treatment options available, but the organization is a mess. It's kind of meandering stream of consciousness. Also I wanted more in depth technical information. Even though this is a very layman-friendly book, it could have gone a little deeper into the science.

I just finished this book and still don't know what the new solution is. There were no "solutions" in this book that were previously unknown to me, and I have no medical background. If you're new to the allergic life, it might be helpful. If you've been battling allergies to various things for years, you can probably skip this one.
