My husband: What..... is this.
Me: It had a bat'leth on the cover! How was I not going to buy it?!

I've had this since 2014 when I found it at the (marvelous) Ithaca book sale. It honestly took until this conversation with my husband a couple days ago for me to realize this is marked as erotica. Not exactly my usual cup of tea.

Sci fi and Star Trek, however, are totally my teas of choice, and the light-hearted treatment of both in this novel made the setting very entertaining. It also clearly expects its readers to be fans and doesn't explain all that much (which is good as that would have clunked it up). I smiled and laughed a lot.

That said, I'd really brand this as more of a romance than erotica. There's lots of steamy thoughts but very little action in comparison to the chapters and chapters of emotional drama going on between various characters. I've definitely read MUCH smuttier "romance novels." I did, however, appreciate the more straightforward approach in the descriptions of these scenes - no romance thesaurus was used to find ever more ridiculous euphemisms for various body parts.

I can't help but feel that the drama could have been cut down somewhat, and I also got annoyed at the main character for some seriously hypocritical behavior. A little judicious communication between characters could have cut the book in half.

Overall, I liked the characters and the setting was great fun.... so I don't think I have changed my bat'leth-cover-buying policy. :D

Ok, I'm a geek. More importantly, I'm a certified "Star Trek" geek. Met my husband at a ST fan club meeting over thirty years ago. I've been to a wide variety of science fiction conventions, been fan guest of honor at two and there are pictures of me in a "Star Trek" uniform at one.

Having said that, this story takes place in the world of Trek cos-play, where the hardcore create characters on-line. work through scenarios and then once or more a year get together to play and pretend with others. Not my cuppa tea, but I can respect that.

The story is set in Vegas. while I'm not a native, I've visited several times. Don't know why, but it irritated the crap out of me that she didn't refer to it as The Strip, she used lower case. One of a few minor things that didn't ring true or that could have been fixed with a little research.

I was disappointed, because I wanted to like this story and I didn't. I get the concept of redemption from our shortcomings. I understand the idea of wanting to change and that we are products of our past. I can do full-bore geek girl and one of the good points of the story was the dialog bits at the start of each chapter.

It's a quick read. You can skim over some of the parts where the action is obvious. Don't get confused by the secondary character's story at the end. It is what it is.

One star for the idea, finding romance in Vegas during a Star Trek convention. Everything else is horrible, though. Three out of four of the main characters don't have much knowledge or care about Star Trek, making the setting superfluous. All of the main characters are shallow, with single motivations that are hard to care about. Bianca is hot to trot, and is dealing with a failed marriage. Colby is scarred by her (literally!) from a past incident in junior high.

The book's length is very short, at 160ish pages, a lot of which are wasted with breezy, rambling dialogues between the two girls, and very little on the world of the con. Most of the relationship building isn't even caused by it. Except for the premise, this is bad, bland romantic fiction. Avoid.

Found a print version. Confusing, moving at a frentic pace. Not easily accessible for those not used to Star Trek or Trekkies. Doesn't explain much, not that much interaction (or so it seemed) between main characters.

Seemed promising, and it wasn't entirely bad. Is a second read in order?
