Now that she’s retrieved the Staff of Lore, Captain Alisa Marchenko can finally dedicate herself and her ship to finding her kidnapped daughter. Her scant clues lead her to Cleon Moon.
Unfortunately, since the fall of the empire, mafia clans have taken over the domed cities on the harsh moon, and exploring there isn’t easy. Even with the cyborg Leonidas at her side, Alisa struggles to survive vengeful mafia clans, rogue Starseers, and genetically engineered predators. To further complicate matters, she must worry about the ancient relic hidden on her ship, a beacon to anyone in the system who craves its power. If Alisa can’t navigate the moon’s chaos, she may lose her only chance to catch up with her daughter.

I'm still really enjoying this series, but I feel like something major needs to happen in the next book. Alisa needs to find who she has been looking for, or Leonidis needs to get the help he has been looking for. Most of the books in this series have reminded me of other books/movies/TV shows. Book one was definitely Firefly. Book 4 was raiders of the lost ark, or Tomb Raider, and this book was like Jurassic Park. It will be interesting to see if the next book reminds me of anything. What I continue to enjoy the most about this series is the humor.
Sad to say I'm DNFing here. The series has been fun light reading up to this point, with a couple recurrent annoyances. The MC constantly calls attention to her exceptional wit and sarcasm, which makes her actual merely passing wit and sarcasm far less enjoyable. There's also been a lot of real estate devoted to her fantasizing sexually about her hulking crew mate. This didn't bother me at all in the first few books. By book three I started to feel ready for them to just go ahead and fuck already so we could all move on with our lives (they still haven't). In this book, however, the author is introducing a love triangle, and I just don't have the patience to read even MORE filler words devoted to the MC's latent sexual needs she's too indecisive to resolve.
The main plot arc seems fun enough, but it's taking a long, long time to get there. If it were boiled down to four or five books instead of eight, and the annoyances above cut, it would probably be a pretty darn good series.
This book seemed a little bit bleaker than the previous ones, but I love the characters, the banter, the story and everything else about it. Money are tight, future becomes more and more uncertain for Leonidas and Alisa, the staff is lost, the kids are missing and leads are scarce... Things have gotten even more complicated and I can't wait to read the next book in the series, which I hope will be soon!
I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Another stellar instalment in the Fallen Empire series!
Just when you think you know what's going to happen... Actually, you never know what's going to happen in Lindsay Buroker's books. That's why they're so enjoyable. In Cleon Moon, freighter Captain Alisa Marchenko, former pilot for the Alliance, finally arrives at Cleon Moon in hopes of finding her kidnapped daughter. Former Imperial officer (and cyborg) Leonidas is now Alisa's Chief of Security. Even as Alisa allows herself to finally hope for a reunion with her daughter, she begins to lose hope that Leonidas will stay on the Star Nomad with her. They find the temple where Alisa's daughter was being held, but the place is abandoned. Several dead bodies at the temp!e show a violent struggle took p!ace, and Alisa realizes she missed her daughter by mere days. Wracked with guilt and blaming himself for an injury Alisa sustained in his cabin, Leonidas contemplates an offer of employment from the local mafia boss, a beautiful woman named Solstice who controls the city. Alisa wants nothing to do with Solstice and doesn't want Leonidas near her, either, but when Alisa's cook/security officer Beck is kidnapped by the rival mafia gang White Dragon, Leonidas goes to Solstice for information and help to find Beck for Alisa. (Maybe he's planning to accept Solstice's offer and doesn't want to leave Alisa without any security force?) Abelardus remains true to form, and they do manage to find his brother, Durant, the man who kidnapped Alisa's daughter. Durant was severely injured and remains in a coma, unable to tell them anything. Lots of Buroker's trademark action and banter in this book, although I felt this book was a little darker than previous books. Is a new threat emerging in the power vacuum left in the wake of the war between the Empire and the Alliance? Will personal goals be abandoned to stop the threat?
One of the best space opera series that I have read. I am so rooting for Leonides and Alisa. The ragtag crew she has gathered is both endearing and aggravating. I highly recommend this series. This particular book had both the action and personal interactions that make an epic story.
I am hooked on this series. I know that I will laugh, cry & be oblivious to my surroundings when I pick up one of Fallen Empire books. Love, love, love the characters, the humour and the amazing sci fi world Ms Buroker has created. Another outstanding, riveting adventure!
Having retrieved Alcyone's staff, Alisa and her crew can finally head to Cleon Moon where she hopes to find her kidnapped daughter. Unfortunately, a bunch of new problems await them there: Cleon Moon's cities have been taken over by feuding mafia clans (including the White Dragon, who still have a bone to pick with Beck over a murder he didn't commit), tax collectors are chasing the Star Nomad before she's even landed, exorbitant fees for everything are pretty much the norm, rogue Starseers are after the Staff of Lore (and unlikely to want it for anything at all desirable in the eyes of Alisa and her companions)... oh, and then there are the genetically engineered dinosaurs waiting to turn anyone who sets foot outside one of the domed cities into lunch. And obviously, the hidden Starseer compound our heroes are headed to is smack in the middle of the marshland in between two of those cities. What could possibly go wrong?
As soon as I've finished one of these books, I'm already eagerly awaiting the next - Lindsay Buroker has yet to disappoint! Action-packed and fun as always, this book throws a couple of intriguing new plot twists into the mix. With (probably) three more books to come, I'm looking forward to seeing where we go from here.
Lindsay Buroker is a master at her craft and a genius in her art. Cleon Moon is the fifth book of the Fallen Empire series and moves us along Alisa, the heroine's, path as she searches, I think ultimately, for happiness. As she gets closer to finding her daughter, she discovers her own link to the Starseer world and moves from lust to love with the magnificent cyborg Leonidas. Throw in the eclectic band of characters who are making the journey with her (along with some chickens) and you will find yourself more often than not with a smile on your face as you move toward this story's exciting climax. Ms. Buroker plans three more books in this series which I look forward to with mixed emotions because while I can't wait to see how this story ends, it is ending. And, just like with her Emperor's Edge and Dragon Blood series, that makes me a little sad. I know I don't have to recommend this book to those following the series. You already know how great it's going to be. To those of you who are thinking of picking it up, best start from the beginning and welcome to the world of the Fallen Empire.
4.5 stars. This is the 5th book in the Fallen Empire series and like each one in the series it delivers a great story filled with action, adventure, amusing dialogue and quirky characters. I am enjoying this series immensely. I was really glad to see Alisa actually put her focus on finding Jelena this time around. In the previous books she talks alot about it but kept getting side tracked. In this one it is her driving force ( as it should be). I also really enjoyed the forward progression in Alisa and & Leonidas'relationship so I wasn't happy with the little set-back where he decided he was too dangerous to be in a relationship. Hopefully Alisa will wear him down again in short order. Yumi is highly entertaining as always and I am very interested to see where Alisa's paternity fits into everything.

Lindsay Buroker is brilliant. Her characters are always interesting and you automatically want to know more about them, even when you may want to hate them! She is a star at giving you just enough information about her universes to make you feel you understand how they function without bombarding you with facts and history. Despite being a complete romance junkie I truly believe someone without much interest in this genre would still thoroughly enjoy this series. She gives you just enough 'awwhhh' factor to keep you wanting more, and it doesn't clog up the plot development at all. Cannot recommend this series strongly enough to any sci-fi an/or fantasy lovers out there! Give it a try, you will NOT be disappointed!
I'm like a broken record when it comes to anything Lindsay Buroker writes & this book is no exception. I loved it, totally enjoyed it and can't wait for the next in the series. Her writing really appeals to me. It draws you in quickly, is fast-paced, action packed with and has a great storyline & characters. Add to that a good dose of humor and a little romance, mystery, intrigue....what's not to love!! So I continue my mission to read everything she's written, because I've yet to be let down. 5 Stars!
Book Five of this space opera picks up right as the intrepid Nomad and it's crew reach Cleon Moon. Thick of Cleon Moon was Dodge City, but not as pleasant. Alisa is still leading her rag tag crew in search of her daughter, in a world devastated by war and it's power vacuum aftermath. In this book new baddies arise and they are more dangerous than any others. Plus add in the dangerous environ of the moon and this is another fun adventure.
Great , Awesome, and Unbelievable funny at times. With intrigue and suspense, this makes for a entertaining series. Will she get a whole man. Will she ever evolve. Most of all will she ever find her daughter again. Looking forward to the next three books. Thanks for keeping us addicted to this unique story line.
Not as good as the first four. I'm starting to really want Alisa to leave Leonidas alone and respect his feelings/decisions. Seriously, stop being selfish. Also don't you have a daughter to rescue??
This series continues to be great. I've been really enjoying this series so far and so far each book has the same feel and solid enjoyment than the previous books. I like the mix of action, the slowly progressing main plot line, the side plot lines, the interesting characters and the bit of romance.
In Cleon Moon Alisa and her crew follow some sparse clues that lead to maybe Alisa's daughter and Abelardus' brother being at the moon. Unfortunately for them the moon holds more danger than expected, not only do they have to find a starseer compound in the unforgiving wilderness, there are also some moon politics, mafia's and dino's they have to contest with. There is quite the bit of action from ship chases and battles, to fights with actual dinosaurs.
This book had some nice progression for the main plot line of finding Jelena, although each time it feels like they're getting closer, another twist hits. Then there is some more about the relic they found in the previous book and some side plot lines regarding the characters. It was quite the interesting read, although not my favorite of the series so far, but I am not quite sure why I enjoyed this one less than the previous book.
After book 4 I was eager to see Alisa and Leonidas romance develop a bit more, but sadly there actually wasn't as much of them together as I had hoped. I do like how they are closer now than in previous books, but more obstacles are in their path and after an unfortunate accident there is another gap between them. I really feel for Leonidas and how he struggles, but I wish he would let Alisa help him instead of trying to keep some distance.
The group of characters in this series is quite interesting to read about. There is an unique opportunity for Beck in this book. I have to say after book 4 and what Abelardus did there I have trouble liking him and I am not sure whether Alisa can stand him and the plot twists all seem made so he has reason to stay there, but he feels like a creep with how he listen to her thoughts and makes romantic offers. Which is a shame as having a starseer perspective is quite interesting. There are also some interesting Mica and Yumi scenes in this one. I still wonder if there will be a romance developing among the side characters and if yes among whom as there are several options.
To summarize: this continues to be a solid series. This book was another great read. I like how there's plenty of action and trouble, but with that everything will be alright vibe. This book had some fun ship chase and battle scenes as well as dinosaurs. The romance plot line doesn't further as much as I would've liked due to some accident which puts a new gap between them. The main plot line furthers a bit and several of the side plot lines as well. There are some interesting scenes with some of the side characters, but Abelardus still feels a bit like a creep to me after what he did to Alisa in the previous book. I am looking forward to see where things go next.
Ohhh I just love Buroker’s imagination. I can’t rave about her enough and think everyone should try one of her books. This book was awesome though it didn’t have dragons. It had dinosaurs instead. ~ As usual there is a bunch going on and I pretty much enjoyed every minute of it. I thought the idea of domes on a planet/moon a cool idea especially since it was populated by fungi and genetically altered dinosaurs. That just gave some more opportunities to have some nifty action scenes that used Leonidas combat prowess, Star Seer powers, Micah’s homemade explosives, and Alisa’s sharpshooting. No worries though since there are still a few good air flights and battles in this book on top of that. I was frustrated about not getting her daughter; at least they have a clue though he can’t talk just yet. The extra info about Alisa’s star seer background is just … wow especially when it looks to be connected to what it is. Just as soon as you think another arc might get finished some more crop up. That goes the same for the relationship … I’m sure Alisa will show him the error of his ways. I so love her personality and sense of humor. One of the best things are the interactions between her and Leonidas. I love seeing his sense of humor being woken up. That leads me to another thing that I adore … cyborgs aren’t over sexed warriors—far from it. In a lot of books where I read about enhanced or super warriors they’re manwhores and that is so not the case in this series. I’m used to seeing quests for items, people, powers, and things of that nature but I have never seen what Leonidas is on a quest for. It just makes me love him even more as a character. Then again one of Buroker’s strengths are crafting great characters with a lot of depth and personality to them. Even if they’re secondary characters they are well-developed. They also have the bonus of having very interesting quirks to their personalities or hobbies. I look forward to reading the next book for sure.
Cleon Moon, the fifth instalment in the Fallen Empire series, continues to follow Alisa's quest to reunite with her kidnapped daughter. While the overarching plot remains engaging, this book falls into a repetitive pattern established in previous books. Alisa's determination to find her daughter is admirable, but her journey feels increasingly sidetracked by a cycle of quests and battles. Each step forward seems to come with an obstacle (usually someone trying to kill a member of the crew or another), often culminating in confrontations, with the heroes always on the winning side against all the odds. This repetitive formula, while showcasing the dangers of Alisa's world, slows the story's momentum and diminishes the impact of individual events. Despite these shortcomings, Cleon Moon still holds a certain appeal, which is why I'm investing money in book 6. Dialogues are always entertaining, and Leonidas is always appealing. However, those seeking an unpredictable read might find themselves yearning for a change of pattern. I had already anticipated the reveal at the end of this book, and I'm pretty sure I know how the series will end.
Book 5 in the Fallen Empire series. Captain Alisa Marchenko only wants to find her daughter, who may be held by the Starseer cult on the moon known as Cleon. The moon is ruled by two opposing mafia bosses so it’s no easy feat gaining entry. Moreover, dinosaurs inhabit the desolate region where the Starseers have hidden out. When Alisa and her friends arrive at the enclave, everyone is dead and her daughter is missing. The Starseers have been attacked by an unknown force. Meanwhile, her ship’s cook is taken captive by a rival mafia kingpin and they must mount a rescue operation. Action scenes mingle with the innuendos flying between the captain and Leonidas, her sexy cyborg friend. Cleon Moon is another exciting episode in this fun science fiction series.
AAAAHHHH THE ENDING. STANISLAV. I DIDNT THINK HE WAS GONNA SHOW UP. IM SO INTERESTED IN THIS STORYLINE. i need him and alisa to meet so badly. i wanna see how that would go. anyway. this was great, sadly we didnt find jelena but at least they got durant. and ofc ending up in some chaos along the way as usual at this point.
Another fun addition to the series. I'm glad that we're finally making some progress in regards to the Jelena storyline (it only took 5 books, I know). I haven't much else to say besides that, nothing especially extraordinary happened.
I’m really enjoying this series, the action, story and especially the characters and their interactions. Everything works well for me. All of Buroker’s characters are interesting, sarcastic and snarky in all of her series. This is a quick moving, fast read
I keep wanting to give these books the average three stars but there is something about them that really engages me. They make me laugh and are so full of action. But if you don’t like the first book you probably won’t like the rest. I’m looking forward to Arkadian Skies!
The author is a talented wordsmith, who knows how to turn a phrase, a sentence, a narrative. There is both a grace and fluidity in her writing, in this book, "Cleon Moon," and the prior ones of the "Fallen Empire" series. It is pleasure to read, as GOOD writing is in short supply.
The storyline does possess flaws that prevent a higher rating. Romance plot lines are tricky at best, and dangerous at worse, for any writer. It is especially true in this genre of action SciFi. Most readers are generous in forgiving faults or differing opinions regarding science, as much is postulations of unknowable, future developments. Readers just want a well written, good story. The lead character continues to sexually, romantically obsess over her human cyborg security officer, losing focus throughout this book (again!), regarding her still kidnapped and missing 8 year old daughter. Nearly everything else rings true in this book and the series, but this aspect. It rips out the soul of the storyline for this reader and prevents a higher rating. Maybe it is just a different perspective in that I am male? If my was child missing, in danger, needing rescue, no matter how much I craved coitus with a good looking woman, I would find other ways to "take the edge off," and go get my kid. The other distractions, minor, that draw Alisa's focus from rescuing her daughter, also mar an otherwise entertaining read.
The book is an enjoyable read, regardless of the lead character's unrequited "horniness" and recommended.
