Hippie: A metaphysical pseudo-biography

Rate this book
Half documentary, half novel about the Hippie phenomenon, full of humour and anarchy, told by someone who was there, and still is! For those who lived through that unique era and those who want to discover the roots of the music they listen to now. A unique story because very few will have experienced anything like it and, even if they had, not many will be able to remember in such psychedelic intensity.

I received this book through Goodreads giveaway. Not a book I would usually read- some parts interesting in a fantastical way, but overall it fell a little flat to me by the end. I always wondered what the hippie life meant, and we're this a somewhat accurate portrayal, I'm glad I missed it.

An odd one, this. It purports to be the life-story of an old hippie, yet the subtitle calls it a "pseudo-biography", which is repeated on the back cover blurb, and at the beginning of the book is a disclaimer that "some of the characters may be fictional". The style varies between wide-eyed first-person descriptions of strange, mystical or supernatural experiences, and summaries of band sets at festivals that read like Wikipedia entries. There are also plausible accounts of police brutality at various festivals and gatherings, written in a plain journalistic style, though with the word "fascist" frequently thrown in.

For all that, it's a pretty enjoyable read, full of interesting information, and gives a vivid impression of the life of contemporary refuseniks.

An eye opening experience about the hippie era. Lots of information I forgot about growing up in the 60s and 70s. A little slow but very informative. I enjoyed it.

Well-told story of one person's life lived for inner peace, meaning, and music as well as an insight into the hippie life lived from the early sixties up to today. It didn't end with Altamont!
