The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God’s Word. These 12-week studies lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic (1) reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) “Gospel Glimpses” highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) “Whole-Bible Connections” show how any given passage connects to the Bible’s overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) “Theological Soundings” identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God’s grace on every page of the Bible.
At God’s command and under Joshua’s leadership, the nation of Israel invaded the land of Canaan—the land God had promised his people. Thus, the book of Joshua records a key period in God’s plan to redeem his people from slavery in Egypt. Connecting the story of Joshua to God’s larger promises, pastor Trent Hunter offers readers rich insights into the book’s overarching story of salvation and the ultimate rest offered to all who trust in Christ for salvation—helping them apply its message to their lives today.
I really enjoyed this 12-week study on Joshua. It helped me see parts of the book that I otherwise would have overlooked, especially the sections about land division, and put them into a much clearer, more meaningful perspective.
I used the Kindle version, which was convenient for reading, but I found it a bit tricky to answer the study questions digitally. For something like this, I’d definitely go with a physical copy next time so I can write notes and reflect more easily.
Overall, a thoughtful and insightful study that deepens your understanding of God’s promises and faithfulness throughout Joshua.
Great setup, great content, great organization. 4 1/2 stars from me. Could’ve used a map and some extra visuals to help along with the written content as well as additional resources for the sections on war and violence. But an really excellent study. Would recommend it to anyone!
I used this 12-week study guide for a co-worker led bible study. The study guide offered many questions, some of which were obvious questions without much depth, but overall it served as a useful guide and offered some commentaries on the text which were helpful for small group discussion. The introduction offered a road map that was also very helpful for providing an outline to the book of Joshua and ended up being the structure that we used for the twelve week study.
I also appreciate that some of the study guide content intentionally tied various parts of the text to Christ so that with each lesson we had an opportunity to see how the book of Joshua pointed to Jesus Christ.
Pros: each lesson had at least one or two questions that provided in-depth conversation on the book of Joshua. Cons: many questions were obvious questions and not very helpful for a group setting. Bottom line: I would recommend this as a guide for anyone looking to lead a small group bible study on the book of Joshua.
