Anya Bast is the author of numerous works of romantic fiction, mostly all paranormal and mostly all scorching hot. She lives in the country with her husband, daughter, eight cats, a dog, and an odd assortment of rescued animals.

She grew up in Minnesota and still favors the colder climates. After high school she moved to the southeast United States where she attended college. While in graduate school she sold her first book and decide to pursue her lifelong dream of writing instead of a career in psychology.

Somewhat reclusive by nature, she can be drawn out with a good bottle of red wine, classic movies, or good music. When she’s not writing, she can be found trying to grow organic vegetables, shopping in thrift stores for that perfect piece of clothing, or dreaming about travel to some faraway country.

She’s hard at work on a brand new series for Berkley Sensation right now, while winding up her national bestselling Elemental Witches quartet.

4 stars - Vampire Romance/Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Erotica

The Chosen Sin is a unique vampire romance/erotica read with multifaceted sci-fi/fantasy elements, a distinctive and intricate plot, thrilling action, a deliciously sexy vampire hero, a complex bad-guy/villain, and serious hotness. The story takes place in the future and consists of universal government agencies, newly discovered and settled planets, and a super-cool vampire race. I’m hoping that author Anya Bast makes this a series because I would certainly love to read more about the fascinating, sexy characters and unique, futuristic vampire world that she created in The Chosen Sin.

I’m really hoping that The Chosen Sin is the first in a new series of Vampire erotica by an author I really enjoy, Anya Bast. This book is really quite an adventure, with lots of characters and a unique plot line that sucked me in from the beginning. Let me try to explain…

Daria Moran is an agent that works for a government organization called the Allied Bureau of Investigation. This agency operates a lot like the FBI, however this book takes place in a future that is not ours, and on planets that don’t exist in the world we know. There is another organization that operates in conjunction with the ABI, and it’s called the GBC, the Governing Body of the Chosen. This is a lawmaking organization that is in charge of all of the “Chosen” or vampires. This is where it gets a little confusing. You can be made into a Chosen, by being bitten by and then ingesting the blood of another Chosen. However, if you aren’t predisposed in your DNA to accept the “Choosing” then you can be caught in an in-between, always needing to feed on sex to achieve fulfillment and satisfy the unending hunger. Daria is not predisposed with the DNA, but for an undercover job, she is willing to take the chance. She will only allow one Chosen to turn her, and that man is Alejandro Martinez.

Alejandro is an agent with the GBC, and when Daria approaches him to turn her into a Chosen for a specific job, he cant turn her down. For years Alejandro has lusted after her, and he is also willing to take the chance of the “Choosing” going badly, just to be with Daria again. First she has to survive the “Choosing”, and then they are on a mission together to take down an extremely bad vampire named Sante, who has kidnapped someone very important. Alejandro and Daria must go deep undercover, pretending to be lovers and partners while attempting a very dangerous and important rescue mission. Can the two of them stay under the radar long enough to save their victim and take down Sante, or will their lust for one another get in the way?

This book is really fairly complicated, so I really had to pay attention while I was reading. Once I got the hang of all the characters and their contributions to the plot, I was deeply engrossed in the story, and I couldn’t wait to find out what happened. There are so many government organizations, new planets and interesting cities, that I wanted to keep reading just to find out more about this new world that Anya Bast had created. There is lots of sexual tension leading up to the actual sex, so by the time it happened, I was practically begging for it. I highly recommend The Chosen Sin to Paranormal Romance lovers as well as Sci-fi and Fantasy fans. This is way more than just your average Vampire story. Give it a shot!

Sexy vampires on another planet. It had many of the love acts that I like, minus m/m and menage. I have no real criticism except I couldn't feel any real chemistry between the H and the H. Admittedly, I had to read it hiding in my car and in the bath, not the most ideal places but certainly private. Some of my best reading is done in those spots.
Chosen Sin left me kind of flat. There were some interesting twists but not enough to hold me for long.

Anya Bast is yet another erotica author who is making the move to mainstream publishing. I'm a big fan of her Elemental Witches series. Her writing has always (ok, everything I've read) leaned toward the dark fantasy/paranormal and "The Chosen Sin" is no different. I found this book to be light erotica which is still pretty darn hot for mainstream. The story contains some light BDSM and anal play so if that's not for you...don't read it!

Daria has spent the last seven years of life burning to get revenge on the 'Chosen' (vampire) who made her love him, and then betrayed her and killed her best friend, among others. She lost her faith in love and friendship that night and has struggled in her career as an agent ever since. Now she'll finally get her chance at her enemy...but she must become 'Chosen' to do so.

Alejandro has loved Daria for longer than seven years. He was in her circle of friends when she was betrayed by the man she loved and she turned to him for comfort...of a sexy sort. Since that night, Alejandro was 'Chosen' and his life changed forever. He still battles the bad guys, he just polices the Chosen instead of humans. When he hears about Daria's mission, he fights to be both her partner and the one who 'Chooses' her. Alejandro is a man who knows what he wants...and he wants Daria...forever.

In all honesty, I didn't particularly enjoy the book until I got about halfway through. Daria's continual push/pull drove me nuts! I found her actions fairly cruel, in a way, since once she was turned she HAD to know how she was affecting Alejandro...if she'd bothered to think about anything except her revenge. Once I begin to dislike a heroine, it's very difficult for me to enjoy the story. BUT, about halfway through Daria began to 'put on her big girl panties' and deal. For me, that made all the difference.

Bast's vampire world is set in the far future which gives it a different feel from many other vamp stories out today. She also wrote a bit more about the mental/psychological aspect of being a Chosen and I liked that. I had a pretty good idea of where the story was headed, but she did manage to throw a surprise or two at me before the end of the story. I'm guessing she may have plans to write more stories about this world and I'm hooked enough to want to read the next one if that happens.

A very easy read. Light on the erotica side, what’s there is more BDSM to some, the kind a chicken like me can read, there is no sex pain in this book, there is some tie up and anal play. Alejandero is a hot dominating vampire with out all the bells and whistles that comes with BDSM, in other words he loves to control then gives pleasure and love, he is also very protective.

My problem with this book is I found nothing special about the story it seemed to drag to much for me.. The heron Daria is one that has had a past with men that keeps her form love or capable of seeing anyone could love her, this goes on for way over 250 pages.

Wow what an amazing read. Anya did one awesome job with this story. I loved Alejandro, he is strong, giving and has the patience of a saint. Daria on the other drove me mad, she pissed me off more than once. I would love this to be a series but not sure if it is. The pace was fast just the way I like em. The characters where strong, just the way I like em and the sex was so intense, just the way I like em. Highly recommend this read to all who love PNR.

Disappointing main story but interesting potential subplot.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
My favorite part of the book was the bad guy Sante. After reading this book, I was surprised at my own response of wishing the author had changed a couple of things and made it into a story about Sante redeeming himself and becoming a good guy. In fact, he was a good guy in some ways. I was intrigued with him, I liked some of what he did, and I liked his true love relationship with someone. I felt sympathy and hurt for him.

The main story was not good for me. I did not like the heroine Daria. She was selfish, insensitive, and mean to Alejandro (Alej), her vampire partner who loved her. I didn't care about what she was doing, what her mission was, or her need for revenge. I had no curiosity about her. I had no sympathy for her. I was bored and wanted it to be over. The events and dialogue were ordinary and predictable.

I considered giving this 2 stars just for the Sante story, but not enough time is spent on his story. Most of the time is with Daria and is not enjoyable. Besides, I would have wanted a different ending for Sante. On balance, I have to say the book was not worth my time.

STORY BRIEF:
For this review I am using the word vampire rather than "the chosen" which is what they are called in the book. Daria is a government policewoman. Sante pretended to be in love with Daria for the purpose of locating and killing her friend. Daria has plastic surgery to change her appearance and then has Alej turn her into a vampire. Vampires were discriminated against by humans. Sante created and runs a commune-type community for vampires to live and work in. Many vampires are happy living there. Daria and Alej ask to join the community and are accepted. Their goal is to arrest Sante for his prior murders and anything else they can find.

DATA:
Story length: 309 pages. Sexual language: strong/erotic. Number of sex scenes: 11. Total number of sex scene pages: 53. Setting: In the future sometime after 2075 on the Darpong planet. Copyright: 2008. Genre: erotic paranormal romance.

OTHER BOOKS:
To date, I’ve read one other story by Anya Bast. I gave 2.5 stars to “Scarlet Sweet,” copyright 2004, which appears I the anthology “Ellora’s Cavemen Tales From The Temple III.” My 4 star review for the anthology was posted on 12/13/08.

CAUTION SPOILERS:

The Sante story:
Sante was turned into a vampire by Maria. She controlled him and ordered him to get close to Daria, a government policewoman. This happened a few years earlier. Sante and Daria fell in love, but Sante had to do his duty and kill Daria's friend and some others. Afterward, he felt so bad that he wanted to kill himself, but he survived somehow and was later freed from Maria. Sante later falls in love with Ari, his true love. When Daria enters the community, Sante knows Daria is there, but he lets her think he does not know. He lets her stay and does not hurt her. In the end, he lets Daria arrest him. He takes her to where the human slaves are. He also tells her he will confess. His reason is that he fears he is going insane, and he might hurt his beloved Ari. Therefore, he wants to be arrested and taken away from Ari so he won't hurt her. He gives himself up and provides all the evidence they might want to put him away. He suggests other vampire leaders to continue running the community which provides a good life for other vampires. Then when a hit man shoots at Ari, Sante takes the hit for her and dies, saving her life. His story is a tragedy. The reason he sold drugs and human slaves was to support the community, which adds sympathy. For my own personal enjoyment I would have liked seeing Sante not be involved with these two illegal activities, have some interesting redemption, and be together with Ari in the future. Besides, if he must go insane, there are other ways to protect her and still allow some time together before that happens. Going to jail is not the only answer for protecting her.

I was surprised with the scene where Sante entered the bedroom of Daria and Alej and required that they perform certain activities in front of him to prove that they were truly mated.

I disliked several scenes where Daria was intimate with Alejandro, he satisfied her, and then she immediately got up and left without continuing for his benefit.

DNF @ 19%

I admit to buying this one for the cover only. Okay, I read the synopsis and it intrigued me.

Unfortunately what I managed to read, before scoffing and relegating the book in the DNF pile wasn't intriguing or engrossing. There was just the smidgen of plot in order to avoid the PWP marker to get the two MCs half-naked together in the middle of nowhere.

I've read better becoming-a-vampire books. I've read better living-on-another-planet books. I've read better futuristic-world-building books.

No, thanks.

Vampires in space make for a bizarre but intriguing read in Anya Bast's futuristic/paranormal/erotic romance mash-up.

Circa a thousand years from now, The Chosen Sin is mostly set on the desert planet, Darpong. Earth-born Daria Moran is an Allied Bureau of Investigation agent whose mission in life - both personal and professional - is to bring down Christopher Sante, who killed Daria's best friend, and others, and may be guilty of other ghastly deeds.

But in order to infiltrate Sante's vampire commune, Daria has to become Chosen - and Alejandro Martinez will Choose her. But first Daria must break through the succubare, which could make her a sex vampire instead of a blood one. For an erotic romance, you'd assume Daria would become succubare, but for the sake of plot she enters the blood coven.

Daria's a strong-willed, pissed-off, kick-arse woman who wants revenge. Alejandro will teach her to love again, and release her inhibitions. But like a toddler who claims ownership incessantly, Alejandro plays the "mine" game repeatedly. I'm not a fan of Alpha males like him; don't like how he claims ownership of Daria, instead of her belonging to no one but herself. And Daria doesn't trust Brandon Nichols, thinks he's shifty, and yet chooses to sleep in the alcove of his door. Christopher Sante, however, is the most well-written character, all shades of grey and neither totally good nor completely evil.

Even if vampires and romance aren't your thing (they're not really mine), stay tuned for what happens around the time of the meteor shower and beyond, because this is where the action really kicks in. Keep an eye out for the show-stopping, devastatingly heartbreaking scene that alerts this is not just an escapist read: it's a reminder that contemporary society has horrors that most would like to pretend don't exist. It's memorable, emotional, and I don't remember ever having a scene in any book remain with me so long after the book's over. (I won't spoil it for you here, but feel free to contact me privately.)

Futuristic fans may want more about the Nabovsky Galaxy, its planets and citizens, and how they relate to Earth and other worlds. But romance fans may be wholly satisfied.

Though I understand the science fiction touch (vampires and other humans now living in another galaxy because earth is over-populated) The Chosen Sin could have easily done well as an average paranormal romance. But aside from that it's one sexually charged read, with the tension between Daria and Alejandro built up so well their coming together (no pun intended) is explosive to say the least.

I am however disappointed at the lack of information and side of the story the reader given about 'bad guy' Sante and what little we are given paints a very contradictory picture which leaves me to the conclusion that he has the makings of an excellent antagonist but as it is he isn't even described in detail even in physical appearance. Hell I can't remember if the color of his hair is mentioned.

*Mar 5: No I really can't remember his hair color being mentioned at all! But the final chapters revealing Christopher Sante and his almost-insanity were fantastic. The irony with what happens with Ari and Daria isn't lost on me, Daria taking the place of Sante in Ari's life.

Though I have one complaint, the night that Daria tells Alejandro that she loves in his sleep and resolves to tell him when she wakes but he leaves sometime during the night begged for a much more accomplished final chapter; it wasn't even mentioned! Daria could have made a smart ass remark about his patience and said that of only he'd waited til morning, but as it is it's forgotten and there's a time leap that felt like a missing chapter.

Anyway, in hindsight the title of the novel, The Chosen Sin is pure genius!

I'm not really sure how I feel about this book. There was nothing exactly wrong about it, but I never found myself caring whether our heroes were going to get out of their situation in one piece. I'm also torn about the bad guy. There were times when he came across as an amoral killer who reveled in his bloodlust and then there were times when he was portrayed as a man wracked by guilt over what he's done. Instead of making me relate to him, as I think it was trying to do, it just made me confused.

Honestly, there's nothing I can put my finger on (other than the confusion inducing bad guy) as to why I didn't enjoy this book as much as I think I should have. It took me a long time to get into and a long time to get back into when I put it down. I never really connected with any of the characters. Daria's emotional flip-flopping was hard to stomach. The only character who had any fire in him was Alejandro and he couldn't carry the entire book on his own. Unfortunately.

Bottom line: okay, but nothing fantastic.

It was just okay. I like Anya Bast and was really hoping to like this one. I had a hard time getting into it. "Valerie" was really annoying me most of the time and I found myself not caring too much about their mission to uncover Sante's secrets. There was also lack of a world. It's taking place in this Chosen city haven, but the description of it is lacking. The betrayal is almost handed to you throughout the book. There's nothing that stood out and grabbed me or kept me intrigued.

The Fangirl’s Review: B-

Anya Bast writes hot sex scenes, I’ll give her that. But this book suffers from some major narrative problems, to the point where I almost gave up halfway through. Luckily, the plot comes through in the latter half of the book, and I was glad I stuck with it.

What surprised me about this book is that it’s not just a paranormal romance. It’s a science fiction pararnormal. Vampires in space.

[blink:]

Absolutely nothing on the cover or the back cover copy gave any indication of this. It’s an interesting concept, to be sure, but for the most part, I feel like this book could have just taken place on a futuristic Earth instead of in a galaxy far, far away.

Which leads me to my first major problem with the book. The science is sketchy. I know that this probably won’t bother many readers, but I’m enough of a nerd to really get annoyed at the scientific impossibilities. See, Earth has become overpopulated. That makes sense. People want to colonize other planets. No problems there, either. Astronomers discover a new galaxy, and some Earthlings move there.

Wait, wait. A new galaxy? Galaxies are really freaking far away. I mean, really far away. The two closest galaxies, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, which are satellite galaxies of the Milky Way, are 169,000 and 210,000 light years away. Even if humans could travel at the speed of light, it would take 169,000 to 210,000 years to get there. And according to our current understanding of physics, we can’t even achieve a substantial fraction of the speed of light. Even if the characters used wormholes, it just doesn’t make sense that we’d leave our own galaxy, which I’m sure has plenty of habitable star systems.

On top of the galaxy problem is the solar system that humans have colonized. According to the book, there are four planets within the habitable zone. This just stretches plausibility to the limit for me. In our solar system, only one planet is within the habitable zone: Earth. Venus and Mars are on the edge of it, but are outside. Four planets within that zone just doesn’t make sense; they’d be too close together, causing their orbits to destabilize. Bast also falls into the old SF trap of creating an entire planet with the same climate everywhere. That just plain doesn’t make sense (I partly blame Tattooine for this… I’m looking at you, George Lucas).

It would have just made more sense for me if Earth had colonized a nearby star system in the Milky Way and lived on a couple of planets and habitable moons. But like I said, I’m a nerd and I’m nitpicky about stuff like that. YMMV, of course.

The first half of the book is marred by expository dumps… you know, where the author pauses the action to tell you the last four hundred years of history of the people of Earth. That is one of my biggest pet peeves in fiction. I love good worldbuilding, but I love learning about the world as the story goes along instead of having it all dumped in my lap in the first hundred pages. Some of the infodumps were completely unnecessary, too; if you tell me that the characters popped out their PComps and mention that they’re communication devices, I’m going to understand that it’s a chip in the characters’ bodies somewhere. I don’t need a paragraph telling me exactly what they are, and that they’re called PComps out of some bizarre sense of nostalgia the futuristic Earthlings have for “ancient” personal computers.

The plot doesn’t really pick up until halfway through. The first half of the book is all setup; Daria and Alejandro (who are law enforcement agents), along with another vampire agent, Brandon, must infiltrate The Shining Way, a vampire commune. The Shining Way is run by Christopher Sante, who happens to be Daria’s ex who also happens to have murdered her best friend along with a few other agents, and escaped the long arm of the law. Daria wants to bring Sante down both out of revenge and also because she’s sure he’s doing all kinds of naughty, illegal things in his commune.

On top of trying to pin a kidnapping and other sundry illegal things on Sante, Daria must also deal with Alejandro’s advances as well as her recent transformation into a Chosen, a vampire. Alejandro has the hots for Daria, Daria has the hots for Alejandro but she is determined to focus on her mission and her revenge on Sante, so she tries to resist Alejandro of the Very Sexy Chest. It obviously doesn’t work for long, because there’s a lot of sex in this book, including some rather kinky scenes that aren’t too common in romances. The sex is very hot, and luckily, within the last quarter of the book, I really started to buy into Daria and Alejandro’s messed up relationship and started rooting for them.

I actually found the story’s villain, Christopher Sante, to be much more interesting and compelling than the main characters. I won’t give anything away, but he’s much more complex than many villains I’ve come across in this genre.

If the first half of the book had matched the last in terms of plot movement, I would have been much happier with this book. As it is, I can only give it a B-. The plot finishes out well, but there was way too much dodgy science and telling instead of showing.

I have just finished reading "The Chosen Sin" by: Anya Bast, There are 309 pages of supernatural drama and romance.
The book is very erotic and edgy with a lot of steamy passionate moments within the book. It is based an a newly formed territory called Darpong and it is within a new galaxy because Earth has become over filled with humans. As it is a futuristic time in the book there are many different technologies and terms used.
I liked this book all though it had me confused at some parts and took me quite a while to read because i started to lose interest. The main characters of the book are Daria Morris or Valarie as her alias who is a human and then becomes a new Vampire or Chosen(which is what vampires are called). Her partner during the mission is Alejandro Martinez he is also a vampire. The book is also filled with succubi which are a mythological creature who survive on lust and sexually needs. Daria and her partner must come together to bring down her enemy Christopher Sante as he in the past had killed 5 people including her best friend Julia, she must get vengeance! Between the mission and discovering Sante's motives Daria slowly falls in love with Alejandro but is afraid of breaking down the walls she has formed around herself.

This is a somewhat erotic vampire romance set on another planet in the future featuring undercover government agents. For me, that's just too much. I think the undercover agent part pushed me over my believeability limit ;-) Seriously, though, it's well written enough, but it wasn't enough of any one genre for me. It wasn't that erotic, the sci fi was an afterthought, and the fantasy elements weren't compelling for me. It's well written, but didn't hook me, and I didn't care about the characters. I skimmed the middle and read the last few chapters, which was enough for me.

The premise is that Daria, a government agent, goes deep undercover - plastic surgery and converting to vampire - to nail Sante, her former lover and the vampire who murdered her best friend on the force. Alejandro, a newish vampire and former co-worker, turns her and goes undercover with her.

Disappointing. I bought this because of happy memories of a short story by Angela Knight about vampires in space, and because I really enjoyed Witch Fire. However, the science was iffy (it would have improved greatly if only there wasn't randomly another galaxy thrown in there - as another reviewer said, why another galaxy? Why can't this take place, far more plausibly, in our own galaxy?), the world-building was lacklustre, and the heroine drove me nuts. Alejandro had potential as a hero, but he was under-utilised and under-characterised. There was far more romantic chemistry in Sante's relationship than between the hero and heroine, and, although he was a monster, I found myself gunning for him.

This one was a bit different. The atmosphere, setting, etc... was very different in a "sci-fi" kinda way, but it worked very well with this story.

The plot was different in the sense that it was so predictable you would find yourself "knowing" how things will turn out only to realize you were completely wrong! So that's what I loved about this one. There is still the all too present push and pull of the H/H struggling to give in to their true feelings **rolls eyes** This is so irritating @ times and is present in far too many of these books that I think it should be OUT LAWED! LOL

The only things I was certain of in this story were Brandon and Alejandro and Daria. But even Alejandro and Daria had me wondering a bit towards the end if they would have their HEA. I recommend this read. It's a good one.

I almost put this book down because I kinda hate aliens, other-planets, and that type of stuff, but I met the author at Rt 2010 and she was really nice and signed my book for me, so I forged ahead. I am so glad I did. The hot scenes are deliciously hot. The hero is dark and extremely likeable, and even the bad guy was pretty likable, which was strangely nice for a change. I tend to get annoyed quickly with really evil protagonists. I found myself hoping he would come out ok . . . or at least I did till the very end and then Anya kind of dumps a lot of pretty horrible things about him, which turns the sympathy. I was hoping that his head of security was actually the really evil one and keeping it from him.
All in all this was a good read and I look forward to adding her to my list of authors to watch out for.

What a disappointment. I like this author's previous work with the Elemental Witches series, but this book was a COMPLETE waste of time.

The worst part of it was the first four chapters were amazing. She set up a really cool world with interesting ideas, and a hero and heroine I was all set to root for.

Then everything went to crap. The plotline turned sour, the relationship between the main characters lost its momentum and turned completely predictable and lame. By the time the ending came, I was ready to throw the book in the driveway and run over it. The story left a horrible taste in my mouth. I felt like the bad guy did not get what he deserved at all, and I felt like the heroine's choices were not reflective of the amazing character the book started out with.

Alejandro "the Chest" Martinez partners with revenge-obsessed Daria "High-Maintenance" Moran in this vampires in outer space futuristic romance that has everything and the kitchen sink thrown in - utopian biodomes, drug smuggling teddy bears, dirt bikes, kidnapping - the list goes on. But despite such proliferation of non-necessities, the romance itself is sweet, if a little one-sided. Alejandro is a manly vampire, after all, he sports the Chest of the Universe. Daria, on the other hand, can be described as hormonal at best. What they see in each other apart from lust is oftentimes beyond me. However, the writing is good, there were several redeeming scenes in the book, and fans of this type of work should not be disappointed.

This was my first Anya Bast book and I really enjoyed it. I'm not a big fan of sci-fi, but this had enough story going that it kept my interest despite the sci-fi stuff. I loved Alejandro in all his alpha sexiness; and Daria was a nice counterpoint to his 'straight man' personality. The story flowed nicely and I didn't find myself skipping over fluff in the book.

My only possible negative comment would be that I found the culmination of the story and the comeuppance of the bad guy to be a little anti-climatic. Unfortunately I started feeling really sorry for Sante and by the time the end came around, I was hoping for a different outcome.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading another of Anya's. :)

The Chosen Sin starts out of the gate with a bang and just doesn’t stop, even up to the last page! The storyline is set in a very interesting futuristic world where vampires are out of the coffin closet. They have basically carved out a bit of vampy paradise on another planet because people in the future don’t really like them any more than they do today...
