Shifter Wars #2

Pursuing the Bear

Rate this book
The Shifter Wars heat up when a woman investigates the mysteries surrounding a fierce breed of man and exposes more than just secrets Bear shifters exist. Professor Bria Lane has known this since she was a child. Now she's returned to the forests of Deep Creek to prove it to the world. She has no idea how close she is to that proof in ruggedly sexy park ranger Derek Poole. Intimately close. But uncovering Derek's wild side comes with a shattering price. Like a magnet meeting metal, Derek is drawn to Bria. His destiny. His mate. So beautiful and so vulnerable. So dangerous, too: an encroachment of lions, vengeful and vicious, is closing in and they're ready for war. Now is not the time to be distracted like a lovesick cub. If Bria reveals the truth of the Deep Creek shifters to the world, she'll bring out the worst of both sides. But Derek can't hide his secrets from the love of his life forever. He knows they're playing with fire--and that when passion runs this hot, this reckless, someone's bound to get burned.

Summary
Professor Bria Lane, is on a mission to prove that bear shifters exist and that she thinks that it can cure cancer. She is determined to get solid proof of the existence of shape shifters under the guise of a reasonable research sabbatical. She wants to prove to her parents that she can do this. She has returned to Deep Creek, a place that gives her mixed feelings. Its the place where she first saw a bear shift and where her parent's relationship changed forever in a negative light. Derek Poole, is the locale Park Ranger, but he is also a bear shifter, and having Bria Lane come to town and with the "type" of research she has in mind could be very bad for all that and the worst timing ever. First he figures out that she is his mate, she poses a serious danger to his kind and there is a war coming on from the lions. Lions that want their territory and seek a war in order to claim it. Tensions are high, and above all that he has to do...he has to make sure his mate doesn't reveal to anyone in the real world who his people really are. But Bria will have to choose on her own....her dream to be published and be accomplished to her parents or the growing love and passion she shares with this sexy bear....
Plot and Story Line
Pursuing The Bear was a random click on NG....I was in the mood for a bear shifter romance and Kerry Adrienne delivered a story that had me hooked from the beginning. Her writing is superb and I love how well she was able to sweep me away in this story. It sets off with our heroine Bria, recalling the first time seeing a bear and his cub shift and how magical it was to her. She has never forgotten what she has seen and she wants the world to know of it as well. Bria is on the hunt for a viewing of a bear shift once again, but it doesn't happen like she wants it to. And then she stumbles across a sexy park ranger who keeps warning her off yet sharing time with her. Bria and Derek become close, becoming honest with each other (other than Derek being a bear shifter) but the war intrudes and Bria is put in danger. Now this does have a bit of lack of communication that happens here....why why do some characters wait too....long to be honest with the one person they love? But this happens and yeah circumstances aren't the best. But I truly loved how we are swept in a story that is thrilling and passionate! I really was curious about this "war", even though this is the second book in the series, I definitely support you reading it as a stand alone. But this war has been building for a while due to what happens in the first book. I did like that Derek and Bria fit quite well together, and even though they have some differences from each other. Once they resolve certain differences, they accept each other fully. The plot does thicken as the story continues on and boy does it get exciting at times! But I have a feeling book three will finish off a bit of a teaser we have with this shifter war....I have a feeling the lions are NOT done with these bears yet. Very curious to see what happens next. But what a fun and delightful escape from reality....definitely recommend to PNR lovers.
The Cover
I really think they did a great job with this cover....and matches up with our hero so well too!!! I love the green, adds the right feel for the story.
Overall View
Pursuing The Bear is a fantastic romance that is exciting....life changing and has a sensual warmth to wrap you up like a blanket on a cold winters night!!

Meh. I was excited to read this as I've recently developed a thing for bear shifters and Adrienne is an author I've seen around but hadn't read before. Sadly, the book didn't excite me. It took me several weeks to read as it had trouble keeping my interest and I had no trouble putting it down for days at a time. Although events happen in a relatively short time span, the story drags and drags and drags. We're told ad nauseam about how important Bria's research is to her, how vital it is to her career, and how desperately she wants to please her parents. Okay, I got it the first six times you mentioned it, please shut up now.

The romance moves quickly, helped along by a heaping helping of fated mate trope. That's not a fave trope of mine but some authors pull it off. Adrienne made it so that each partner has free will and can reject the bond, and love occurs independently of the bond, so for me, that part was tolerable. Still, after a long stretch of dancing around each other, the "I love you"s happened quite fast, helped along by a bloody incident. And there's a trope I loathe, though it worked to a point given the parameters of the story, the Big Miscommunication. It actually had a place in the story but it dragged on forever and then BOOM! all is forgiven.

And, while I don't know much about the US national parks system, I'm pretty sure, based on what I know about the civil service, that Adrienne got all her facts wrong or took a whole lot of liberties with the facts. Apart from that glaring flaw, the world building was decent and I'm intrigued but I'm in no rush to read more in this series. The writing just didn't work for me.

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

This felt a little bit like paint by numbers shifter story. Bria, a sassy, intelligent university professor, meets Derek, a bear shifter park ranger, who smells her and knows she’s his mate.

I struggled to get into the story for the first few chapters and I found myself playing shifter bingo trying to remember which famous series first introduced each of the ideas recycled in this one. The writing felt really choppy at the outset but it felt more fluid once I was ⅓ of the way in.

The character development felt quite superficial here. Bria reads as much older than her years and while there isn’t much sex, the sex scenes were awkward and disjointed encounters possibly written by someone’s elderly maiden aunt. Derek and Bria never emerged as distinct individuals and this made it difficult to believe in their romance.

I found the pacing far too slow for most of the book until it raced through and glazed over the climactic battle at warp speed. Ultimately, I finished this story but while it borrows a great deal, I’m not sure it adds anything to the shifter cannon.

Derek was hot. A hot park ranger. A tall, fit, tanned, long-haired, bearded, blue-eyed park ranger…perfect for Bria.
I have to say that in some sections of the book, the author just went on…and on…and on, about bears – more than the hot park ranger (I guess that’s my job here. lol). I think that I – and other readers – understood that Bria was a passionate ursinologist. Her rambling internal dialogue about bears was monotonous though, and appeared to be page-filler to me. At one point during my reading, my mind drifted to a scene of Yogi and Boo Boo approaching Bria with a picnic basket, with lil’ Boo Boo saying: “Here’s your bears right here, bitch. We talk, and Yogi wears a fuckin’ Frank Sinatra hat. Now - have some lunch. And shut the fuck up about bears already.”
Being book 2 of the Shifter Wars series, this was Derek and Bria’s story, and it was pretty sweet. With the exception of the unresolved hatred between the bears, lions, and wolves, Deep Creek and its environs seemed to be the ideal place to live. And – did I mention that Derek was hot? With a great personality too? Yeah – double-hot. Not to mention that some of ‘the bad guys’ were pretty hot too.

Books one and two of the shifter war followed the beginning of two different relationships; both men are bear shifters in Deep Creek! I liked that you could easily read each as a stand alone and still get the full story even though they are much more enjoyable if read together! Both books in the series are the perfect romances with the perfect amount of sexy times!! There are only a handful of sex scenes through both books but they are some seriously enjoyable scenes!!

Book one does need a trigger warning for Abuse. Amy is vacationing in the mountains to escape an abusive relationship and Amy does get into bad spot late in the book where abuse comes into play again. I loved how her mate is the polar opposite of Amy's previous relationship and the author did a great job of showing how a man can be protective without crossing the line into controlling!

Both books did suffer slightly from some rambling chapter with too much filler; they probably could have been a good 50-75 pages shorter after taking out some of the repetitive bits. Still, both books had me biting my nails during the exciting parts and swooning during the sexy and romantic parts it had a perfect balance!

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

I think I would have benefited from reading book 1, but this book did an excellent job of setting the story for Bria and Derek.

Bria is on sabbatical from the university where she is determined to earn tenure. However, she's wary of men due to being betrayed by her ex boyfriend who also happens to be a professor at the same university. His determination to obtain tenure led him to steal her research and present it as his own.

Now she's in Deep Creek looking to study bears. Not just any bears, but shifters. As a child, she had seen something should couldn't explain other than the fact that there were indeed animals that could change forms between human and bear.

Derek is a park ranger and a bear shifter. When he finds about Bria's plan to expose the shifters in this park, he's just as determined that Bria keep their secret. When he realizes that Bria is his mate, that only adds to the complications between them.

I did enjoy this book, but I think the story could have benefited from more details about Bria's parents and their attitude toward her and their determination for her to exceed in academia.

This is the second book in the Shifter Wars series by Kerry Adrienne.

I picked this up because a bear shifter just seemed so interesting. Of course, I am reading this series out of order. Per usual for me.

This book was like watching a train wreck waiting to happen. Bria wanted so much to see a shifter bear in Deep Creek that she lied on her grant application to get the funding to do it. Under the guise of watching the bears and their watering rituals, she went on the search for these elusive bear shifters. She had seen the shifter bears when she was ten years old and the magic of their transformations fascinated her. She wanted to meet these shifter bears but I don’t think she realized what she was asking. The reality could be much worse than the fantasy.

Derek is a shifter bear. He works as a Park Ranger in Deep Creek and runs across Bria. Almost immediately he learns two things. Bria wants to out all the bear shifters to the world and she is his forever mate!

I thought this book was really interesting. I liked how unsure Derek was dealing with Bria and how Bria was not really thinking properly about the entire situation. Then add in the bear part of Derek’s personality and it made for a great read.

Definitely pick this up if you like a good paranormal romantic thriller.

This book was just okay for me, although I admit it was far better than some of the other shifter books that I have read. Unlike those books, this author didn't paint a picture of everyone knowing and being okay with shifters existing. There was a general unknown about shifters and even Bria had doubts about shifters even acted in their human forms.

Some of the story lines seemed drawn out, while the ending felt incredibly rushed. Despite all her previous questions about shifters, Bria simply accepts Derek for who he is and gives up her entire life without asking any of those questions. Just once I want an author to go into detail about the crazy questions a human would have when someone stands before her and announces he is a shifter.

Bria is a professor who is doing research on bear shifters. Oh, no one knows exactly what she’s researching as she’s lied to the university for this grant. They believe she’s studying the hydration habits of bears coming out of hibernation. Ah, no. As a child, Bria saw a man and his young son walk behind a boulder near a waterfall… and emerge on the other side as a bear with his cub. She’s never forgotten and this could be the discovery that gets her the academic acclaim that her parents need to see from her to approve of her life choices. She is determined to find bear shifters at Deep Creek. She just “knows” that their DNA could cure hundreds of human diseases. And after all, they aren’t human they’re animals – the research would be humane and could help so many people.

Derick meets Bria on her first day in camp. He’s a forest ranger, an artist working with wood… and a bear shifter. He knows the dangers of letting the world know about shifters. It wouldn’t be long before the government would have them in cages, scientists tearing them apart looking for cures that his kind just did not have the answers for. It wold be the end of life as they knew it. He has to find the way to convince her to change the focus of her research. He hated lying to her but it was survival of his clan and the thousands of shifters of all species around the world at risk here. But lying, even by omission to his mate was pulling him apart. There was a war with the mountain lions brewing, and Bria has placed herself right in the middle of the territory where battle could erupt at any moment. He has to tell her the truth about himself, and convince her to keep their secret… but what if he’s already waited too long.

For me, Pursuing The Bear was a good story, so it got a 3 star rating… which is a “good” story. I am torn about this story in many ways. While the base of Bria and Derick’s romance is interesting, the coming war preparations and the intrigue, the double crossing – all of that made an interesting story. What kept me losing focus and being pulled out of the story constantly was the rehashing of Bria’s parents, how she must find something spectacular to write a paper about because then they’ll love her. I got that this project is important to Bria the first time it was mentioned. Her single mindedness on this subject was not driving home the point, it was making it an annoyance within the story to the point where I skimmed over those parts of the dialog because I didn’t want to read it yet again. Now, I don’t like say that about any story but I got it, let’s move on now.

In the end all I can do is react to what an author gives me, the reader, in a story. Bria and Derick were interesting, they had a good basic story – yet I was left wanting something more from them that I never got. A rushed ending, a sudden acceptance of everything Derick has been trying to get Bria to understand wasn’t enough to make this more than a good story for me. I wish it would have been more, and at this moment I’m not certain if I’ll continue the series. But… you as a reader have to make up your own mind. This was my reaction, it might not be yours.

Clearly I spend too much time around academics, because I spent most of the first chapter flinching at the heroine's behavior: she identifies herself as an "ursinologist" (really? she doesn't go with "wildlife biologist"? really?) and sets up camp in a remote state forest without checking whether camping permits are required (she defensively says that the information she saw on the Internet didn't indicate she needed a permit!), checking in with the park rangers, or even researching what animals live in the park. When she's told they include mountain lions, she's mildly surprised. I... what? Even I wouldn't research a bear population without at least checking Wikipedia to see who/what they interact with in the territory I'm going to be visiting. Not to mention that in order to accomplish any useful research she'd probably have to be in the park for a significant period of time (beyond usual camping), which again would require notifying the park administrators, getting permission for the work (oddly, you can't just walk into Yellowstone and start ear-tagging the wolf population), getting permission to be in backwoods areas of the park and/or camp outside of ordinary campgrounds, and telling them she's going to be there. We're not even going to discuss what she's planning to do while she's there beyond "look for bears," because... well, actually, because that seems to be her entire plan: look for bears. Radio collars? Silent observation? Denning practices? Who knows? Like... this is not how you accomplish research, lady. We're told earlier on that her ex-boyfriend stole her earlier research and published it as his own, and all I can think is that he published it in one of those research journals that is assembled by bots and will take literally anything, even if it's written in crayon and composed entirely of quotes from Jane Eyre, because this woman could not have produced anything publishable anywhere else.

Anyway, other than this the book seems fairly standard. The heroine smells like "coconut and lavender with a sprinkling of rain-dampened roses"; the hero is a park ranger with a lengthy list of authorial excuses as to why he never went to college (the National Park Service usually does demand degrees), who is preoccupied with a coming war against the mountain lions. There's a lot of telling rather than showing. However, I just couldn't get past the first chapter; I bailed around the time the heroine describes her ex as having "stolen all of her graduate work" which was impacting her chances of tenure. Uh... if he stole her graduate work wouldn't she be more concerned with getting a degree? You know, because you need to produce an actual thesis to get a doctorate? Getting a tenure-track position comes later (and, in the modern academic environment, takes some pretty significant bona fides) and getting tenure comes some years after that and generally involves frantic publishing, research, and teaching to meet your university's standards and, like, I know I'm getting way too down in the weeds for a book about shapeshifters but I can't help it and there's no way I'm going to enjoy reading this and no one else is going to enjoy listening to me complain about reading this so I'm done.

This book is recommended to paranormal romance readers who are less anal retentive about realism in insignificant details. I'm sure it's delightful once the plot gets going.

I enjoyed reading with book. It seems to pick up shortly after the first book ends with Derek. Derek is out on his own time in the Deep Creek Forest. He runs into Bria where she is camping without a permit in a location that people aren't supposed to camp. They get to talking and they feel an instant connection. It takes a short time for Bria to tell Derek the real reason why she is conducting research there this summer, to find and prove that shifters are real. It takes Derek just a short while to figure out that she is his mate which makes the whole situation very complicated considering that they are just waiting for the lion shifters to attack. I liked the way that this story builds. We get to see a lot of the characters as they deal with what is going on around them. Derek is keeping big secrets but he isn't sure how to share them or what she will do with the information. He's trying to protect both Bria and the clan and he needs to find the best way to do so. I liked the pace of the story. It kept things moving along but not at a brisk pace which worked for these characters and where we were with their story. There is plenty of action and some intrigue as moving parts keep coming together. The lion shifters are getting closer and closer to attacking and the wolf shifters play a role in this book as well. I would recommend reading the first book in this series as while this one does follow a different couple there is information in the first one that you don't necessarily get in this one, at least not in the same detail. The Cave of Whispers plays a large role in this series and you get more information about in the first book and this one builds on it. I like the way that these are working together to continue to build on the world that has been created. This has been an interesting series so far and I am excited to see what happens next. We are given a HEA for the couple in this story but the over-arcing story line is left with questions and I'm excited to see where things are going next.

This book was given to me for an honest review.

4 stars

So this is the second book of this series and I have to say I loved Derek and Bria. Derek is this macho bear shifter and it was nice to see what Bria could do to him because she was his mate. There is all kinds of stuff that is going on in this book. There is still a war brewing since Griff killed Evers. So everyone is on high alert. So when Bria strolls in and wants to know about bear shifters, lets just say that adds more problems to the mix. Marco and Mason are still big problems in this book and Max is still seeking revenge for Evers. There is so much action going on in this book that it keeps you reading until you finish.

I love the paranormal romance books. They have so much going on, because what if someone finds out or what if the mate doesn't want to be mated. I really liked that now Amy will have someone else that is human in this clan. Derek is the one that didn't want a mate, but oh my when his bear wants something, hes gonna get it. I liked reading the struggle between him and his bear at points, because in a way it makes him a little more human. Bria is smart woman that is trying to live up to her parents expectations. Always not meeting it, and she thinks finding out about shifters will do that for her, problem is she has a battle of paranormal going on and something is going to have to give. Derek wants to tell her but fears he will lose her. So does he protect his clan or his mate? With Marco coming around who kows what is going to happen.

There will be bloodshed, lies, and mates. Some will come out alive, some won't. Who will get power of the cave at the end? Will Bria want Derek after learning everything? So many questions so I would start reading to find out what is going to happen. I can't wait to read the next installment that comes out next year.

If Pearl Harbor, prepping, camping and crafts are all your style, you're gonna love the second book in the Shifter Wars series. Can bear studies professor Bria revolutionize medical research, her career and her relationship with her parents by proving bear shifters exist? Will her eagerness to accomplish her mission be the end of the Deep Woods bears - and her own life? Can smoking hot park ranger Derek protect his bear clan from Bria while claiming her as his mate? Will the deceitful but decadent lion twins or the battle between bear and lion shifters claim her instead? It's well worth a week-long read to find out. What did I like about this book? Description, dialogue, pacing, plot twists, pretty much everything - and Kerry Adrienne writes a spicy love scene, or two or three...

Pursuing the Bear

Pursuing the Bear by Kerry Adrienne is war of the worlds in shifter form. She has a way of enticing her reader into reading without stopping because they can't put the book down. Derek and Bria have alot of chemistry between them but alit if secrets as well. This is the second book in the shifter wars series and it was nice to see Griff, Amy , Elijah again. As Derek and Bria come closer to their HEA ending they learn much about each other and themselves. Love can conquer and make a couple apair in way only they know and understand. Adrienne's characteriztions are so strongly written that you care about them and what they are going through. I enjoyed this book.

Bria is a bear specialist and plans on spending her summer researching bears in Deep Creek, but not just any kind of bears, she is looking for human shifting bears. Derek is a shifting bear and a park ranger to boot. Add in some scruff and a man bun and Bria stumbles upon her subject without even knowing it and feels an instant connection. With a war with the lions looming, Bria becomes collateral on both sides. Can Derek protect her and his clan, can he convince Bria to be his mate and not report his findings?

I enjoyed this shifter story and intend to catch up on the series. There are chuckle worthy moments throughout and the characters are easily relatable.

Not having read the first book in the series was not a detriment to the overall pull of this story. It was intense and intriguing, yet left me s bit on edge about Bria and her relationship with her parents. That aspect of the story left me feeling lost in her myopic focus on pleasing them. To me it wasn't necessary to the overall story itself because the fire between Bria and Derek was enough to carry the story. The secondary characters added an additional enjoyable element.

Another amazing story

This is book 2 in the series and it was just as good as book 1. Though the same as book 1 I feel as though there should be one more chapter, to sum up........

Spoiler don't read of you haven't read the book

What happened to the twins ?
Do they know about their dad?
Why weren't they there to help \ protect him?
How many lives were lost?
Shouldn't Shoshanna have said something at the end after everyone went into the cave?

But i guess this is what makes got read book 3 .
I hope I get the answers I'm looking for in the next book.

Derek did not want a mate at least not until he knew it was safe for the bears. While out walking he found a woman camping in a area not set up for camper. He told her he would not charge her bit another ranger might. Bria was so excited after meeting Derek she could not get over how he made her feel but unable to trust from her last relationship she had concerns. Her goal was to find bear shifters and write about them to make her family proud. Derek needed to convince her not to while watching for the lions and war.

Bria goes to Deep Creek National Park to conduct research on bears and she meets Derek, a hot park ranger, while she is camping. The last time she was in the park she remembers seeing a young boy and his father shift into bears and wants to prove shifters exist. There is a war between lions, bears and wolves that doesn't get settled in the story and she seems too focused on trying to please her parents instead of herself. Interesting story that had some good scenes.

Wow!

The bears are getting ready for war with the lions. Derek is out in the woods when he comes upon bear expert Bria and is surprised when his bear tells him she's his mate. Bria is set on proving that there are shifters but can't resist the hot ranger. Derek now has to figure how to tell her what he is and keep her safe.

A good read with lots of simmering heat plus suspense. A definite must read!

“It’s like a dam burst in my heart and now I’m running over with love.”
That’s how Derek feels about ursinologist Bria when he stumbles across her in the park. But how can he tell her about Shifters when he must protect the clan from the eyes of the Normals? And, with the Shifter war looming, how can he protect her? A great story in the Shifter War series. Steamy and passionate love scenes, exciting action and great world building. Derek and Bria's story is full of intrigue and danger, as well as love. The writing kept me tied to this book until the end. I personally feel the bears and lions should share the cave, but it's not up to me. I highly recommend this series.

I enjoy this series and this is book 2. I liked the plot and impeding war and I liked Bria and Derek. There were times though it moved really slow and lots of info on bears...almost too much. There is some info repeating but otherwise an enjoyable book.

A little trite and reliant on far too many stereotypes (scientists, students, shapeshifters, etc.)

I dunno. I was looking for something with a little more chemistry between the main characters and this was not it.
