Hidden pirate treasure, legends of great riches, a deadly villain and an unlikely couple who may find something more precious than gold. Bayou Nights by Julie Mulhern takes us back to New Orleans, the city of magic, mysteries and dark secrets. One gambler won a piece of eight and that singular coin would become the part of the answer to the whereabouts of the hidden treasures of Jean Laffite. ..and then he went missing, is it murder, magic, or something darker?

Christine is determined to uncover the treasure in a race against a killer, because really, if she doesn’t the ghost of her father could nag her forever. Who better to help than an investigator used to the paranormal? Then again, is he ready for the “magical charm” of New Orleans? Nothing could have prepared Matthias Blake, who cannot resist being her protector any easier than he can resist her charms. Will they experience potent emotions of New Orleans or will they create their own boiling brew of love?

Sound like a dreamy historical romance with a touch of the paranormal? Not with the creative writing of Julie Mulhern! Meet ghosts, a voodoo queen and MORE as her characters come to life (or almost life) with clever humor and unpredictable actions. A strong-willed heroine, a dashing hero, evil, and a lot of gold at the end of race, who will win the prize? Does it really exist or is it one of New Orleans many secrets?

A delightful read without a dull moment filled with humor, heat and the feel that only New Orleans possesses.

This book is so much fun to read. All the chaos and mayhem caused by one coin, and leads to an adventure which will bring Matthias & Christine together. This book is a combination of all my favourite genres, historical, paranormal, adventure, mystery, and romance. No wonder I enjoyed reading it so much.
Christine is in trouble her dear father is missing and all kinds of creatures are attacking her. Now it is up to her to not only find her father but also keep trouble away. Which will be no easy feat considering the fact that she has one thing which is bound to attract trouble no matter how hard she tries. It seems that every ghost in New Orleans is after the coin. They all want one thing and they're not afraid to use the living for their own purposes.
Matthias is here to help Christine. The woman has no sense of self-preservation. In fact it seems that she is quite enjoying the danger. But this is no fun adventure. Their lives are at stake. Not to mention many souls who haven't crossed over and roams the city. Sometimes their gift can be a curse. But in any case it is now their problem to solve the whole mystery revolving around this coin. He isn't sure about many things but Matthias knows one thing for sure... no matter what he will protect Christine. So from now on they are stuck together for as long as it takes to find her father and leave the danger behind...
This is a fun & light read. I enjoyed it a lot. I loved both Matthias and Christine, side characters are good too. Ghosts kept things interesting. It's a must read for everyone. :)

My review cross-posted from Wit and Sin: http://witandsin.blogspot.com/2016/07...

When a zombie attacks milliner Christine Lambert in her own store, it’s only the beginning of her troubles. Her father gave her a piece of eight to guard, and the coin in question just happens to be the first clue in uncovering a priceless treasure that once belonged to a famed pirate. The problem is, every thief, murderer, ghost, and voodoo priestess in New Orleans seems to know she has the coin. On top of that, Christine’s father has gone missing and for all her knowledge of the supernatural, she doesn’t know how to find a missing ghost. It’s time to ask for help. But the help her friend sends – stuffy Yankee investigator Mattias Drake – isn’t exactly who she expected. Now, Christine will have to work with an undeniably compelling stranger if she hopes to rescue her father, locate a pirate’s treasure, and live long enough to tell the tale.

Bayou Nights is an intriguing blend of mystery, romance, and the supernatural, all set against the sultry backdrop of early twentieth century New Orleans. I absolutely love how Julie Mulhern brings the richly atmospheric world of 1903 New Orleans to life in this tale. The world draws you in from the start and you feel like you’re walking alongside Christine and Drake as they encounter the most incredibly vibrant spirits, both living and dead.

As for Christine and Drake themselves, they are compelling leads with solid chemistry. Christine is a strong, clever woman who has made a name for herself as a milliner. New Orleans is in her blood and spirit, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching her charm all those around her, ghosts and the living alike. Christine is no wilting flower, but a woman used to protecting herself, both physically and emotionally. It’s not easy for her to trust Drake, and her family history has given her good reason not to. But Drake, for all that he’s a fish out of water in the South, is an excellent match for Christine. He’s reliable, honest, and willing to do whatever it takes to protect her, while respecting her own strength and talents. Drake is also our eyes for this world, and watching events unfold from his point of view was delightful. It’s interesting to watch both he and Christine grow over the course of the story. Their romance isn’t a case of insta-love; the two of them come to know and respect one another as they fall in love, which I really liked.

The romance in Bayou Nights takes a back seat to the treasure hunt and the mystery of who is behind the attacks on Christine and the kidnapping of her father. There’s danger around every corner in this story, and somehow the almost languid pace of the book pairs well with the intensity of the action. Ms. Mulhern packs a lot of history, characters, and paranormal encounters into Bayou Nights , and it serves this unique story well.

Bayou Nights is the second book in Ms. Mulhern’s Haunting Desire series. As I have not yet read the first book, Bayou Moon (formerly titled A Haunting Desire), I can safely say that Drake and Christine’s story can be read as a standalone. That being said, by the time I was done with Bayou Nights I definitely wanted to go back and read Bayou Moon. I absolutely love the unique world Ms. Mulhern has created in the Haunting Desire series and I’m looking forward to revisiting it.

Ahhhh! Let's start with the setting of this book! New Orleans, early 20th century! Yes, please!

Let's continue with the story and characters. Ghosts, voodoo priestesses and witches, all of these are perfectly normal in a book set in NOLA. And in this one, people are more open-minded about them. They live peacefully, side by side. Well, okay, depends. It kind of changes when our heroine, Christine, has something her dad left her that everyone seems to want. That means everyone is out to get her.

This leads to our hero stepping in, Mr. Drake. Oh, please come in, Mr. Drake! He has his own demons but he can't help but constantly want to protect and rescue the heroine, that is not exactly a damsel in distress because she can hold her own. I loved that!

So, kick ass heroine? Check!
Dashing, protective, badass and yummy hero? Check!
Awesome setting? Check!
Great plot? Check!

Yup, all of that means a really happy me! I loved this book and I highly recommend it to anyone that loves a good paranormal romance. It deserves a 5-star rating and I can't wait for more!

I want to thank the publishers for the copy given in exchange for my honest review. My pleasure!

Don't you just hate it when the ghost of your gambling father instructs you to retrieve a mysterious coin that he won in a hand of specter poker and then you have zombies and a possessed mob chasing you? If nothing else, it certainly makes it hard to do your work as a milliner to society ladies of New Orleans. Though it could just help you put to rest your fears and finally give in to love.

I may have said this before, but I adore Julie Mulhern and will scramble to read anything and everything that she brings to market. And Bayou Nights is most definitely no exception. I'm going to try and be objective and intelligent, but know that what I really want to do is switch to all caps and just type THIS BOOK IS FANTASTIC YOU SHOULD GO READ IT NOW AND BUY A COPY FOR EVERYONE YOU KNOW WHO IS ABLE TO READ.

At any rate, Bayou Nights is a dark but captivating paranormal story set in 1903 New Orleans. Hat maker Christine Lambert finds herself in possession of a fabled (and very highly sought after) piece of eight. As soon as her father instructs Christine on where and how to retrieve the treasure, a dangerous game is set in motion. Her father is now missing and Christine turns to her friend Trula (read all about Trula in A Haunting Desire) for help. Trula's husband sends Mattias Drake to Christine - much to her annoyance. From their first meeting, Christine and Drake seem more ready to battle one another than the evil gathering around them. But Julie Mulhern crafts a cunning story. The deeper Drake and Christine sink into the mysteries and the danger, the more resolved both of them are to solve the puzzle.

But there's so much more than a mystery, pirates, ghosts, and voodoo priestesses in Bayou Nights. The characters are truly the stars of this story; what begins as annoyance becomes a grudging appreciation and a desperate attraction that, hard as they both try, neither Drake nor Christine can ignore.

Bayou Nights is outstanding. Mysterious, evocative, and deeply satisfying in every way.

My thanks to the publisher, who gifted me a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Christine Lambert's father has gone missing. She has asked a friend to send help finding him. The fact that her father is dead doesn't mean she can stop worrying about him.
Mattias Drake is an investigator, and is used to seeing ghosts and sending them on to where they should be. But New Orleans is unlike any city he has been to. There are so many ghosts and lots of the living seem to be able to see them.
This is a historical, paranormal romance, and is the second in a series. You can quite easily read it as a stand alone. There are lots of laughs along with the danger to our heroine. You can only imagine the ghostly personalities we meet. Pirates, soldiers and even THE voodoo queen. Which ones are good guys and which are just out to protect their own secrets. Who is holding Christine's father and why.? Can she trust this brash Yank?
Really good fun, with marvellous characters.

I haven’t read the first book in the Haunting Desire series, but after reading the blurb for book 1 it doesn’t look like I need to. The books appear to be linked but not intrinsically so can look like they can stand on their own.

I like the New Orleans world that Mulhern has created, although it’s not specifically hers in that New Orleans has always been a supernatural playground. It’s more about the characters she’s created and how she brings New Orleans to life in her writing. All the pieces fit together nicely and create a captivating picture that certainly had me intrigued.

The story itself was okay. I didn’t feel all that invested in it, probably because I felt like the voice was trying a little too hard to be quirky and cute and it came up a little distracting. It’s not an uncommon voice in these types of books, but I do think BAYOU NIGHTS was playing it a little heavy.

The plot where Christine was chasing pieces of eight around the city was fun. She ran the gamut when it came to individuals she encountered, from fine families (who now live in her childhood home and for whom she makes hats) to brothels to the swamp itself. She was attacked by a possessed mob, a slew of ghosts, a zombie. Certainly no shortage of supernatural creatures here.

Christine herself is a pretty great character, holding her head up high despite the supposed shame her father brought on her family. I mean, considering the time, I guess it would be beneath people to live above a hat shop she also owned, but she’s an independent woman and a trend-setter. She runs in a mix of crowds rather seamlessly and she can adjust to any situation on a dime, and make it work in her favor almost every time. Note I say almost. No one’s perfect.

Mattias Drake, on the other hand, I could do without. The POVs switched between him and Christine and when in his head he wanted to hit things. A lot. Didn’t usually do it, but he has a rather violent, short-fused brain that I found off-putting, especially when he talked about inflicting harm on a woman. I’m not saying someone like Yvette Simms didn’t deserve a slap or two but it’s very different when a man thinks of striking a woman because he doesn’t like what she’s saying than a woman wanting to slap another woman for being snide. I found him very off-putting as a result.

Because of that I really wasn’t on board with their developing relationship. It was all rather standard, a lot of build-up with a monkey wrench thrown in, only to end up together at the end. Hard to be for a relationship with you don’t like one of the characters.

I was very intrigued by Mike, though. I’d be interested in reading her story, which is the next book I’m guessing, for sure.

There are two genres of books that I always try to avoid – Westerns and Romance. But I love Julia Mulhern’s writing, so decided to give this book a go.
I was relieved to see that it was not a conventional Romance. Yes, there is a bit of bodice ripping, and definite appearances of tingly lips etc, but more than that it is a great, thrilling adventure story with friendly – and not so friendly – ghosts, a zombie, monsters and a voodoo witch, as well as a handsomely proportioned courageous and capable hero, and the obligatory beautiful damsel in distress. For 19th century New Orleans, the only things missing are vampires, but there are enough evil humans to keep the ball rolling.
In keeping with the unusual menagerie of characters, the heroine, Christine Lambert, is no delicate flower requiring continual male intervention and rescue. Rather, she is a fiercely independent and competent woman, equally at home with a sword, derringer pistol or silver hatpin (not to mention the bottle of holy water she just happens to have lying about). The hero describes her as “nothing but trouble wrapped in an exquisite package and tied with a satin bow”.
As always, Julia Mulhern has a way with words to set the scene: “It was hotter than blazes and the damned air was so thick a talented tailor could use it as fabric for a suit. No wonder the ladies walked slower than spent mules” and to paint the characters’ mindset: (Christine) “ignored the sharp twinges in her ankle and conscience”.
There is nothing ordinary or predictable in this book, and each chapter brings up something new and surprising. I won’t be hurrying to devour Romance books in the future, but this one was a lot of fun and well worth challenging my preconceptions over.

This was a review copy from NetGalley and the publisher.

Honestly, I was surprised how much I enjoyed this. I have never read the author and wasn't sure about the description. But this was intriguing from the first page and I really enjoyed the MCs and their gradual romance amongst all of the mysterious and supernatural going-ons. I liked the characters and the story so this was a good read. If anyone likes historical romances with ghosts, witches, voodoo, strong female leads and protective heroes then this is an unique and good one.

1903, New Orleans. How was Christine Lambert, (a milliner and shop owner), to know that the piece of eight that her father gave to her before he died would lead to solving a puzzle and bring with it a desirable prize.
But Matthias Blake has been sent to help, to combat the ghosts, voodoo and anything else that the evil in New Orleans can throw at them.
Very surprised, and delighted that I enjoyed a paranormal romance/mystery. I enjoyed the story and liked the characters.

I liked all the voodoo, ghosts, witched, pirates, and even the treasure found within the pages of this story. Ms. Mulhern gives us a world filled with mystery…when a ghost who just happens to be Christine’s father is looking for his missing piece of eight. Christine needs help so she asks a friend for help and they send Mattias. If having a ghost for a father isn’t enough being chased by zombies and a mob that is processed just might be.

As Mattias helps Christine the deeper into the mystery they get the more fascinating it becomes not only with the storyline but also with them falling in love.

Even though this is a little on the dark side with all the paranormal activity going on it is actually a pretty captivating story. I enjoyed the ghosts, zombies, witches and everything else that was going on within the story. It helped that Ms. Mulhern gave us some really interesting characters. Christine was strong yet she processed a wickedly clever gene that helped in outsmarting the zombies and mob. Then Mattias... well let’s say he learned a lot.

I found this to be a highly entertaining story that was sexy and a little spooky just perfect for Halloween. I think a nice cup of cider and a haunted house are just what we need.

How did this book stay off my radar for so long?
I love, love, love fiction that incorporates real historical figures into it. Add a dash of the supernatural and I am hooked! I’ve read all of Mulhern’s other books and enjoyed them immensely, but this series is different; it’s like having a full meal compared to a snack! I would go off onto tangents to research historical figures and fashion. Then I’d read a bit more before I found something else I wanted to research. I do hope she continues this series, even though I’m sure the research that goes into them is exhaustive. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

This was definitely a rollercoaster ride type read. Historical references were appropriate, although mixed up and topsy turvy. Three Quarters through the book and it was clean. Bam! Mandatory stretched out sex scene that wasn't necessary. Then a shorter sex scene that ruined the ending for me.

Bayou Nights by Julie Mulhern is a wonderfully crafted historical read. The story begins with Christine Lambert, New Orleans, 1903. Christine is a milliner by trade and her ghost father Warwick is missing.

She is convinced that he has been kidnapped but she has no idea why. She sought help from her friend Trula and he was sending someone to help her find her father. Little did she know that what was sent to her may be a greater threat then what she now faces.

When Mattias Drake arrives in New Orleans to help a friend, he is none too happy. He is even more disgruntled when he realizes the man he came here to find is an actual ghost. His work has led him to work with ghosts in the past but finding a ghost in New Orleans is like finding a needle in a haystack. He arrives at MIss Lamberts hat shop only to walk in on her being assaulted. When the attacker winds up dead before him – Mattias is quick to realize there is a lot more supernatural going on here then he was expecting.

Christine Lambert is strong willed and iron hearted. She is bound and determined to find her missing ghost father. He was here a week or so ago and now he is gone. And weird things are beginning to happen. Zombies are coming after her and there seems to be a lot of people interested in the eight piece she wears around her neck. Given to her by her father before he disappeared. As luck would have it the helped she seeked is sent to her in a handsome, tall man named Mattias – and he is everything she insists she does not want in a man.

Having watched her mother suffer at the hand of her fathers gambling she knows that no man will ever be a part of her world. She doesn’t need one – she can take care of herself. But when her world comes crashing down and every paranormal element found in New Orleans is after her – she realizes the one person she can truly trust is the one she is fighting to close her heart off to.

Mattias Drake has had his fair share of loss. His mother lost her life following his father into the same line of work. His sister – the same.

Every woman that is close to him seems to die. He has no desire to find love or a woman to share his life with. That may be hard to accomplish when everything in his body responds to the silly milliner with the strong will. Mattias is the strong brooding type that will always help a woman in distress. Little does he know that this woman – Christine – may just be the death of him. The story takes you on a wonderful paranormal experience through New Orleans. And history abounds in the back story – leading you to wanting to know more and wanting to explore everything further.

The characters relationship evolves and pulls you in. The characters mesh extremely well – even when they don’t get along – you want nothing more than the magic that is New Orleans to overtake them and embrace them. I love a story of romance with a dash of paranormal on the side and this story did not disappoint. From zombies, to pirates, to book’s and voodoo priestesses – this story does not disappoint – you will take a journey through the bayou with an amazing story-teller.

I am looking forward to reading more of Miss Mulherns’ historical romances. This is a must read if you love anything and everything New Orleans.

WOW. This book was so much fun to read. I didn't intend to read it in a day, but it was impossible to stop. We're back in New Orleans, 1903. We've got a hat maker whose father (a ghost, of course) has gone missing. Only a special investigator can help with this situation. So Zeke (the MMC from book 1) calls in his old friend for assistance. Matthias Blake (He's referred to as Blake for most of the story) just happens to have the special skills needed to help her. He knows a bit about the ghostly world, but isn't quite prepared to deal with the zombie or all the other creatures that appear. Christine knows one thing. Her father told her to protect the coin he gave her. So when she ends up on a WILD treasure hunt, she's none too pleased about Blake's presence, but she's not so proud that she won't let him help. For this, I greatly admired her. She has this strength that keeps her balanced, but she's not so headstrong that she tries to just do everything on her own. I just absolutely loved all the twists and turns to the plot. We get pirates, our voodoo priestesses, a charming Yankee, ghosts who don't seem to know they're dead, and so much more tangled in the story. The author seems to take great care in planning out all the developments, because I didn't feel like there was a stone left unturned. And even with all the complexities of the story, it NEVER feels confusing, but it keeps you guessing at which way it's going to go. Shall I say again. I LOVED IT. I felt like I was right there with the characters. I thought it would be hard to top my love for A Haunting Desire (book 1), but this might have done it. I cannot wait for more in this series. This will become a series that I can binge-read over and over to discover things I might have missed before. If you love ghosts, old-world stories, and mystery, put this on your MUST READ NOW list.

This author is new to me but I wish I would not have missed the first one. I was drawn to this one by title which usually is not the deciding factor for me but this one yes. I find this area so mysterious and sensual can not resist it. The time period of this one also lends to it promising even more of a cloak of mystery which it delivered many times over. Christine and Matthias are the foundation that carries this story to the point you completely forget yourself with you following very closely so not to miss anything. Paranormal woven in this with the romance you have given me my favorite dessert. What many are after brings all sorts to her but she is not alone in this. What builds between them is just as intriguing as the mystery that they must take care of. This author has given us the reader some colorful characters in these two with what happens around them being the norm which I like. With all that I read I have to squeeze in ones such as this every now and again just like some have to have their own brand of fix.

the con: If this book had been longer there would have been more time draw out the mystery and the action points then this would've been a full 4. we could've spent more time with the characters and gotten a better sense of them, their desires and pasts.

What I read, I liked and I can't wait to read the next.

The characters were great and the mystery and suspense were awesome and I loved the love/hate relationship. plus you have a kick ass heroine and a broody and handsome hero, what more can you ask for.

Then to this crazy jambalaya, throw in New Orleans herself, Marie Laveaux, ghosts, zombies, voodoo, and a treasure hunt for immortality.

All in all it was a good read and I do wish it had been longer. I'm thinking I will be seeking Julie Mulhern out in the future.

I've never read a historical mystery with demons and ghosts in it before but this was non stop action from the get go. New Orleans is the perfect setting for all the paranormal activity.
I loved Christine, who is smart, independent and feisty. Matthias makes a good sidekick and his over protective ways was quite endearing. The pair get into one scrape after another and you barely get time to take a breath before they are in the thick of a situation again.
Greatly entertaining.

Paranormal

Different and interesting. New Orleans, the name conjures up images of otherworldly characters and situations. It's hard to believe that the heroine could have a father that betrayed both her and her mother, left her destitute and still she will do anything to save him. Some dangling threads and unanswered questions
