This is a moving account of Karen Brown’s transition from youth to adulthood, as well as her journey from sight to blindness. She describes her changing roles from student to wife to mother, and from teacher to the director of the Addie McBride Rehabilitation Center for the Blind. She handles each change with dignity and practicality, coping with each one as it arises. Karen refers to herself as a funambulist: someone who is able to walk the thin line between light and darkness, sight and blindness, and calm and crisis.
