"I’d rather have five minutes of you than a lifetime of someone else, and that’s the truest and saddest and most thrilling thing I’ve ever told anyone.” - from Hopeless Romantic by Seth King

This story captivated me from beginning to end...a beautiful and unexpectedly witty tribute to love and writing, wrapped up in one hell of an entertaining tale. Seth King is one of the best writers working today, and this short is a breath of fresh air in the sea of romance novels. Hopeless Romantic is a behind the scenes glimpse into the life of a male writer in a female-dominated business, artfully woven into a poignant love story. Poetically written, as we expect from Seth King, this short gem deserves to be savored, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

"She wasn't like the rest of them
Something burned deep within her, snapped and crackled and sizzled in her soul
She had this
Mad, dazzling passion that made her
Feel more deeply
And suffer more thoroughly
And rage more violently
Than the others
And God knows she was broken in more ways than one
But oh,
That girl was so goddamned beautiful
In all the broken places"

Insert a gigantic swoon and a big fat sigh...
So I kind of feel like a broken record at this point. There's only so many times I can say how much I love Seth's words. Only so many times I can try to express my love for his stories. Hopeless Romantic is no different. It is the story of Graham and the journey of his attempt to turn pour his grief into a book. And is there anything more romantic than a man writing down your love story to be etched in the pages of a book forever?? While I was reading I felt that Hopeless Romantic was almost semi-autobiographical about Seth's journey in trying to become a male romance author in a genre mainly dominated by females. As with all of his books, there is an underlying message: be true to who you are and do what you love, because life is too short to live it any other way.

"Death is no tragedy. A life unlived - now there's the real catashrophe."

Seth has me hooked onto his words like a junkie needs their next fix. It began last year after I read The Summer Remains and hasn't let up. Whether he's writing the pov of a young dying girl and her last wish, a grieving boy trying to recover from losing the love of his life, young gay teens struggling to be accepted in this world, or even an elderly man hoping for a second chance at love - one thing is for sure. He grips me every time with his poetic writing. His stories never fail to make me think long after I've turned the last page. Hopeless Romantic is yet another addition to Seth's quickly growing list of books that have made me swoon, think and feel. If you are new to his work I urge you to give Hopeless Romantic a try. Maybe you'll become hooked on his books too, and his stories will work their way into your heart as they have each done to mine.

So, I have been thinking of not doing this review now for a few days.
Seriously, no one wants to write a negative review, especially me, and I feel like a total asshole for it, but I feel this is that one review that I Have to write regardless of it not being a "good review".

But I promise this isn't all negative nor is this an author/story bashing, so hold your horses before you all send me to the gallows for my 1-star.

So, the gist of the story is that Graham is a hopeless romantic who is kinda over the top with the lovely dovey mushiness and is head over heels in love with his girlfriend of three years, Olivia.
With the natural progression of a relationship, he wants to take it to the next step and propose, and decided to do it after sky driving at a place that's closing down. . . .

The plane fails and plummets them downwards, in an attempt to save themselves, they jump. He survives. She dies.

Now, this is where things are meant to be heart-wrenching, ugly crying, grief ridden, but it's not. I honestly felt nothing. Before someone pipes up with the "omg, how heartless" comment, I am far from heartless.
13 years ago, the love of My life was ripped from me in a terrible accident. I know all too well the heartache, well it's not even heartache, it's something much more but something that doesn't have a word to accurately convey the pain that's felt. Getting on with life after that kind of loss isn't easy, it is a lifelong struggle that you have to deal with every day.

I Know that everyone grieves differently, trust me, I get that.
The rawness, that whirlwind of emotions and that all-consuming grief that threatens to pull you under and not let you back up. . . . None of that was found within the pages of Hopeless Romantic and THAT is where my problem lies.

After Oliver dies, Graham continues to Tell you he is sad, that he misses her, that he loves her and that he feels responsible for her death. But he doesn't show that or give off any emotions at all. I wanted to be moved, I wanted to Feel what he was going through, the grief, the guilt, the loss. I wanted to have my heart handed to me all pureed in a glass because of this story . . . .
That didn't happen. I didn't get sad. I didn't cry. I didn't believe a single bit of Graham's sadness. It was all . . . empty, does that make sense?

In all honesty, I feel like the main focus of this wasn't about heartbreak, grief, remembrance, or the loss and learning to live without one's soulmate, it was about Graham wanted to be a "Male Romance Author." This story could have very well just been about a couple who separated and the guy decided to write a story about it but was torn because you know, "real men don't write romance and don't have feelings. "

Now, I know you guys are thinking "OMG she's a cow!" and believe me, I am not trying to be in any way, but I don't want people going in thinking it's going to rip their hearts out and then mend it all back together when love shines back in because that does Not happen. At all.
As I said above, this is more about a guy who wants to be an author but is fearful because being a Male Romance Author is "taboo."

Now I said this wasn't all negative, and I meant that.
I will most definitely be giving Seth's work another try.
Seth King is an amazing writer, and has all the right words, he was just lacking the emotional punch that a story like THIS one needs, I think to write something so gut-wrenching like a loss like this, you really need to delve into a very dark and emotional place.

*This is just MY thought's on the book. I have read books in the past that focus on losing a partner and rebuilding your life after that and have been fine with them, so this was Not a trigger book for me.*

Imagine if you the day you were going to propose would be the last day you would ever see them alive? What would you do? Graham had always loved two things in his life - Writing and Olivia. One day he decided to propose but be a bit different and zany and do it as they jumped out of an airplane. Things though didn't work out to plan as tragedy occurred and only one of them left alive that day. Graham fell into a deep depression, and nothing seemed to snap him out of it, except one thing- his journal. Graham decided to put his words to a project and started to write to Olivia and then one thing led to another as he ended up writing their love story for him to move on. The thing though was that Graham was living in a world where it wasn't cool for Males to be romance writers. They were supposed to write about Adventure and Action Thrillers. Think James Patterson and not Nicholas Sparks. Can Graham break it in the world of Romance or will he become a laughing stock? Has it got what it takes to break the mold and become a successful male romance writer?
I have to admit I enjoyed reading Hopeless Romantic as in one way you could imagine that it was possibly based on a real story since of course Seth King has become a popular Male Romance Writer. The other thing that while reading this it did get me thinking that we now live in a world where it is becoming more open to males writing romance novels as the gender stereotype is starting to break.

I’m kinda addicted to Seth King’s writing. Hopeless Romantic was a story full of depth and strength. And it’s a novella. I don’t want to brag, but damn I wanted more.

Through the eyes of an aspiring young author, Graham Herrera, Seth King wrote about love, loss, just about life with an opening debate about the place of male authors. As an avid romance reader, I truly don’t mind if the author is a man or woman. What matter are the words. How you turn something from your imagination or from experience and create a story. To make someone feel.

Obviously in Graham’s Journey to heal and overcome the loss of his great love, nothing is gonna be easy. Pouring his soul into words and to show them to the world is something terrifying and life changing, because of the way people are going to acknowledge the whole thing.
I admired Graham’s persistence, integrity and determination. It was very inspiring.

Men knows nothing about romance? You haven’t read any books by Seth King obviously! This story provided an interesting inside look about the book world.
Once again, you made me feel, Seth King, with this heartwarming and poetic story.
Aren’t we all hopeless romantics? I am definitely one and I'm not afraid to tell.

I’m fully convinced that Seth King can write anything. Seriously.

“Humans were built to love and do nothing else; we just came with factory defects.” See what I mean?

Seth’s newest book, Hopeless Romantic, is loosely based on his experiences as a “male romance author” and is laugh out loud funny, beautifully written and utterly honest. Of course, in true Seth fashion, there’s a bit of heartbreak and one bastard of a father but Graham’s journey into the predominantly female world of writing romance is just a fantastic story!

What I enjoyed the most in this book is getting more of a glimpse of just how smart, witty and funny Seth is. “Thinking about her just made me all sweaty and nervous for some reason, like a vegan being forced to tour a steak processing plant.” His books like Honesty and The Summer Remains stand on their own in revealing how deep and passionate Seth is, however, in Hopeless Romantic we see another side of Seth’s writing and it only proves that he is one of the best romance authors out there regardless of gender.

Grab Hopeless Romantic now, head to the beach or the pool and get ready to be caught up in the fabulous words of Seth King.

You know when you come across a book that affects you so deeply that you have no idea how to put it into words? Well that's me right now.

Im struggling to come up with words that will give this book the justice it really deserves, and to be honest I don't think I can.
This book is so much more than just a book. This is a work of art. This is a beautiful work of art.

Seth's words have touched me in a way no others have ever before. He reaches into your chest and squeezes the breath from your lungs and makes you re-think things in your life. He makes you understand the difficulties and thought processes that 'male romance authors' go through when it comes to writing about love.

I cried. In sadness. In love. In healing. I cried From the sheer magnitude of emotions brought to the surface while reading. It took everything from me.

'Hopeless Romantic' really is a truly, truly beautiful book from an amazing, talented and all round phenomenal guy.

Everyone needs a Seth King book on their bookshelves and in their lives. He will leave you speechless and spellbound by the beauty in his words.

Hopeless Romantic by Seth King is another poignant masterpiece. This is now my third Seth book. He continues to get better and better. His books always have beautiful messages that leaving you feeling enlightened and completely touched. Each story is like a window into Seth's soul. I wonder if it's hard for Seth to continually give some much of himself away...

In Hopeless Romantic, we get to see a glimpse the misconceptions and roadblocks for a male romance author.

The sorrowful story of Graham & Olivia was tragic and inspirational. Seth gives us a different perspective on death... One in which love never dies. We continue to keep the person we lost alive through our love for them. I found comfort in his words....

Being a Hopeless Romantic is a compliment. It means you love and feel more. Isn't that what life is all about to love with all we have inside us??

I feel like with Seth's books you shoukd read them in order to get the full effect.... it's almost like a process....

I loved every truthful and honest word of this novella.
This debate about Male Authors and Romance is going on for a long time now and I really don't see where is a problem...as a Romance Reader I only care if a story is good and enjoyable.

Seth King succeeded to show in a few pages every kind of emotions and life lessons.I'm so glad he took the leap and published his first romance because this awful world needs more Hopeless Romantic like him.
I want to make a toast to many more beautiful masterpieces written by him in the future...Never Give Up!!!

Was given this book with the promise of a honest review....

Wow, Seth King you are absolutely amazing. Yes I have read books writen by male authors even the romance ones, But by far most of their books were the adventure, crime and just plain male field. Can men write from a woman's point of view, heck yes they can and surprisingly I noticed that it's far more tender and oh heck it got to me ok.
So that your character Graham Herrera went through was not something easy to go through. Yet you managed to capture the feelings so well. I don't want to say much more here so I do not give the book or plot away, but I will be reading more books from you and other male authors if they write about romance. Loved the book.

I love Seth King's writing style and I am definitely a fan.
When I purchased this book, I had no idea what to expect but having an "ugly cry" moment was not what I expected. I could feel the emotions that Graham experienced with Olivia as well as his family. He was trying to move on and embrace a less than favorable career and it seemed everyone was against him. But it was through his grief that he made it through all his obstacles. This was such a developed and detailed book for being classified as a novella. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it will be on my Top Books for 2016. I cannot wait until his next book.

This absolutely beautiful short story is about the heart-breaking loss of a man's One Great Love , who fueled him to follow his bliss and become a romance author. This book also poignantly and significantly touches on the struggles of a male romance author , particularly the sexist opinions and double standards he has to deal with in the romance book world, and even among closed-minded family members . But for me, the absolute truth and fact is this: men can write romance. And this young man can definitely write, even better than some of the most seasoned female romance writers I've ever read.

Incredible. But duh...it's Seth King so I wouldn't have expected anything short of incredible.

Seth has an amazing way with words. He really is a Poet. I find myself reading passages over and over again. Not because I don't understand them but because I want them to be permanently embedded in my brain.

I can't wait to see what he does next.

I picked this up on a whim shortly after it was released, but until recently hadn't gotten around to actually sitting down and reading it.

Even though it starts off on a very heavy note, this little novella turned out to be a often times humorous look at one man's journey into writing romance for a living and just how it can be looked at by some people out there in the world.

Though I have to admit, there are a lot of the same feelings this character expressed experiencing that a lot of female authors as well go through, which is probably why I enjoyed it as much as I did. And how this author wrote book readers reacting to the book the character wrote. Priceless. I'm still laughing at parts.

I think I would have enjoyed this even more if it had been drawn out just a little more. I think this could have easily been a longer novel, especially given the fact that the character was writing his own reality into a love story and would have loved to see it explored, but it did not disappoint in the slightest for the short read it was.

I'll definitely be checking out more from this author in the future.

This was a first time read for this author and defiantly different to what I usually read.
A story for Graham and his story writing challenges for male romance books. His love for Olivia was true as he was set to spend his life with her when things go tragically wrong. Olivia's life ended but Graham continued to live in despair for months. Graham starts his journey back into writing a book with a tribute to Olivia.. I would have liked to connect to them better but something didn't grab me, it was a okay story though.

A absolutely beautiful story of love and loss. One could only hope to find that kind of love during their lifetime. Death brings strength or weakness to the survivor, so glad that Seth let Graham find strength and took us on a journey of love.

5 stars!!!

"I'd rather have five minutes with you than a lifetime of someone else ..."

This is one of the best short stories I've ever read. Seth King manages to make me feel more with 55 pages than other authors do with full lenght novels. Am I surprised about that? Not at all, since I had the pleasure to convince myself of his marvelous talent while reading his book Honesty. This man can write! Seth's style is very special and rare among indie authors nowadays. There is something so sincere and raw about his words, you simply know that he is pouring his heart out while writing his books. His stories always resonate deep within me making me become one with the characters' hope, joy and suffering. Want a taste?

"Your love made me see in color, for better and for worse, and those shades will never fade - even as my broken heart bleeds for you."

Hopeless Romantic is the story of Graham Herrera and his life-altering decision to become a "male romance author". It was his far-fetched goal since he was just a kid but everyone told him that it's weird for a male to write about feelings. So he put this idea on the side. Then he tragically loses the love of his life, Olivia. Graham is devastated and searching for a way to cope with his grief. He decides to write a book about him and Olivia. What better way to immortalize the person you wanted to spend the rest of your life with? But is society ready for a story about lost love by a male author?

This book was despite the heartbreak very funny and entertaining. Seth shows us that although our culture has made a lot of progress there are still some gender issues left. Why are there still people who think that a man can't write about the contents of his heart? Shouldn't the gender of an author be irrevelant for the way his work is going to be perceived? Sometimes we should just be brave and do the things we were destined to do.

I recommend this short story from the bottom of my heart. You are going to love each and every word of it!

"Grief is a geyser in your chest, spouting eternally at random, but sometimes it likes to show you a little burst of beauty." This story definitely has grief in it, but it most definitely bursts with beauty too.

Hopeless Romantic was such a wonderful read. It's been so long, it seems, since I've read any book where the author can seem to literally paint the pages with emotions. Seth King most definitely does that. Above I give you a small quote from the book. I always highlight things that I like when I read them. A sentence here or there; the usual. In this story though, I might as well of highlighted the whole darn novella because all of it was just so gorgeously written! It took forever to land on just that one quote, as I seemed to just keep scrolling and scrolling through my highlights I made in this book.

Hopeless Romantic is a novella, so it's a short, quick read. Can I just note here real quick that this story was NOT a full length novel, and it still was able to smack me in the face with it's words and beauty in such a small amount of time! I can't emphasize that enough!

Overall, would I recommend this book? Obviously that is a huge YES. I think this would also be a great book to read if you've never read any of Seth's work before, as it's a quick read, during which you can get a feel for if you like his writing style or not (which you will. Just...trust me on this). Go check it out RIGHT NOW, and I will just be over here buying all his other work to jump into ASAP...

Reviewed for Fallen For Books Blog

I really wanted to like this short story. It was really well written and the story flowed. I finished it in under an hour, not only because I am a fast reader, but because it was really good edited and written. The writing style of the author is really great.

However what the author didn't manage was to capture my feelings. What happens in the book is something awful and I don't even want to imagine to go through such great loss in my life. I totally understood that the main character was falling into a depression. Who wouldn't? The problem is. I couldn't feel it. Normally if I read a book about loss or a person that is depressed I feel it. I feel a dark cloud hanging over me and I cry. I am an ugly crier, so I was actually glad that I haven't cried here, since I read this book on my way to work.
What I want to say with this is. The hero is called a hopeless romantic and yet I didn't feel any of his feelings. He was just not convincing in what he felt. I read the words about how guilty he feels, how sad he is and how hard it is for him to keep on living and yet I was missing that soul wrenching sadness that has to accompany such loss. That big black hole that threatens to swallow you up heart and soul, because you just don't want to be in this world without your loved one anymore.

Because of this all the missing feelings and yet the good writing technique I am giving 2.5 stars for this book.
I will read more of this author, though just to see if he's better with feelings in longer novels.

Beyond Love!

This is my first taste of Seth King and I was not disappointed. I'm not sure how I want to describe my feelings for this so bare with me. It was more than just the story he was telling, it was the way he has with words. I can see how he always wanted to be a writer bc it's almost magical the way he puts the words together to make something beautiful. Several people can come up with an interesting story they want to tell but it takes real talent to draw someone in and make them truly feel something from reading. I'm all about the feels. As an avid reader I really couldn't care less who writes the books. Gender, race, image, sexuality etc makes no difference to me. I don't understand the controversy over it all. All I want is someone who can put together a story that catches my interest, holds it throughout the story and makes me FEEL something. Seth made me feel! He did a wonderful job giving us a look into being a man in the romance novel world. Love is love. There are many different ways to show it or express it. Not everything is for every person but that doesn't make it wrong. This is a great example of sticking to your guns, following your heart and holding your head high. I'm so thankful that Seth decided to follow his heart and become a romance author. I look forward to reading more of his work.

"I wrote to make people laugh, I wrote to make people cry, but most of all I just wrote to make them feel." Hopeless Romantic - Seth King

Mission accomplished. Boy, do I feel right now. This book was packed with emotions, and made me FEEL more than any other book I've read this year. Seth King has a style of writing that pulls you into the story with him, making you feel everything he feels. It's really quite amazing!

This was, above all else, a love story. With a title like that, you can't be surprised by that. But it also had so much humor sprinkled thru it, while at the same time, he makes you want to cry in other spots.
It's also an amusing glimpse into a man trying to break into the romance genre of writing. One quote I loved was "But what would society say if I picked up my pen and wrote about the contents of my heart instead of the contents of my father's gun closet?"

This was a short story, one you can pick up and read in an afternoon. Somehow it packs the emotional punch of a full blown novel though. I would recommend this book to anyone, if you don't believe in love before reading this book, you will after!! After all, in the words of Seth King, "Love is the elegant magic that makes daily life worth the trouble."

Let me start by saying that I RARELY leave reviews like this. I usually just put my stars in and leave it at that. However, I feel compelled to leave a written post for this book and Seth King in general. I'm not a crier so I didn't cry during this book. If you are a crier, though, even a little bit you will need a huge box of tissues.

I don't want to really talk about the story at all, but the prologue absolutely took my breath away! This book is very short so it won't take you long to get through it. But let me tell you, it will be an hour to an hour and a half amazingly well spent. SETH IS AN ASTONISHING WRITER! I love books. There are many writers I enjoy. But the ones I yearn to read...the ones who's books are purchased the minute they release...well, they can be counted with just my two hands. And I probably wouldn't need all 10 fingers. Seth is now one of those writers. I didn't know about Seth until recently. Every one of his books will soon be on my Kindle. If they are remotely as good as this one, well...

You will not be disappointed in "Hopeless Romantic." If you are, you have no soul.
