When a new island forms in the South Pacific after a volcanic eruption, nearby nations quarrel over who owns the fresh land. One of the countries sends an advance scouting party to plant flags and lay claim to the nascent isle, but none of that party returns. The sponsoring nation is accused of deception. Political rivals assert that members of the landing party are still on the island, building a military installation in secret.
In response, A United Nations expedition is assembled to land a second, neutral outfit comprised of scientists and humanitarian aid workers. This team is well-equipped and ready to report back to the U.N. in-situ about the fate of the first party. But once on the island, they discover that along with hot magma, something else has been dredged up from deep within the Earth...something alive.

They never expected to find anything on this new island
4.5 out of 5 stars
After a new island is formed from a volcano in the South Pacific, local islands send an expedition to claim the island. When they don’t return, the UN decides to jump in to figure out what is going on, fearing a conflict breaking out between the neighboring islands. When this landing party gets there, they find more than they could have ever expected.
The narration for Landing Party was done by Jeffrey S. Fellin, who does a great job. His voice allowed for the action to feel fast-paced and the building parts to feel more thrilling. Fellin does a great job narrating Chesler’s work, and I will definitely be listening to more of his audiobooks, especially when they team up.
I honestly wasn’t even sure what the actual plot or synopsis of this book was, I just knew that it had a dinosaur on the front and it was written by Rick Chesler. I honestly didn’t need much more. Now that I’ve read the book — I’m glad I made that blind choice. Landing Party was an excellent book in the Dinosaur Thriller category with a different spin from the norm. There were no genetic mistakes or genetic miracles here. I won’t give away where the dinos came from because it’s an interesting twist to the story.
The characters in Landing Party were a real eclectic bunch. From National Geographic explorers to doctors and geologists. The UN sent everyone they thought they were going to need for this expedition. The actual people were all different and almost all of them had personal missions on top of the UN’s mission, making each character unique and feel real.
The writing of Landing Party was really good, lots of action with a slight breather in between. Every time you think someone is safe, Chesler throws them back into the fire. Having so many characters in the beginning of this book, I had a feeling that things weren’t going to go well for all of them.
Overall, Landing Party was a really enjoyable dino thriller. Lots of action, a slightly different take on the genre, and great narration make this an easy book to finish in a few sittings.
WOW, Loved this story. A team gets on the newly formed volcanic island with no weapons to investigate what happened to an earlier landing party. big mistake .
As I was sitting comfortably in my chair .. . I was thinking that I was sure glad I didn't volunteer to go there. If you like jurassic park you will love this one. Lost of action with surprises along the way. This book would made a great movie.
Fun. Action-packed. An international team explores a dangerous island newly created by volcanic activity. Although the presence of dinosaurs on the island isn't really explained, just go with it! This would make for an entertaining SyFy original film. I listened to the audiobook which was narrated by Jeffrey Fellin. His voice sounded like Jeff Goldblum which was quite fitting.
An earthquake leads to a volcanic that leaves a new island in the sea. Tonga lay claim to it but when a boarding party vanish, the UN put together a team to find out what happened and explore the island. Amongst the team is a spy who wants to plant evidence of the Tonga claim as they have done a deal to allow the US to use it as a military base and a potential diamond thief. But when the team discover what really happened to the Tongans, surviving an island of dinosaurs to be rescued is going to be only the start of their problems.
The UN team are a mixture of photographers, geologists, adventurers, experts in communications, language and medicine, everyone needed to explore and document the island. The sub plots are having an expert in diamonds who is determined to steal enough to retire and the spy who is getting paid to plant evidence. I was a bit confused by this as the UN team are looking for the missing Tonga team who went to the island and even finding one of their bodies or supplies is proof enough that they had claimed the land, so why need to plant evidence they were there? Nobody else had sent a team there! I found that a bit odd. The team splits into two to explore the most likely spots-the outside of the volcano and the lake inside the crater, and that is when the dinosaur fun begins!
This book is one of those typical b movie stories that I quite enjoy as a fun dinosaur romp that isn't to be taken too seriously. The plot here is pretty thin but who cares when there are lots of dinosaurs trying to eat people! That's what we want isn't it? On this island the dinosaurs are encased in rock so when one smashes or is damaged, or even starts to twitch and hatch, it is a good idea to get running as you have no idea what is going to break free each time! There are also a couple of characters that you really want to see being eaten which adds to the fun.
There is a wide range of all of the best dinosaurs in this book. They are in the water, in the caves, in the air and charging across open ground to get you. There is no safe place anywhere on this island and as they try to survive and find a way to call for help, the team are being picked off gradually by the predators. Raptors, T Rex, pterodactyls, allosaurus...they and many more are there to entertain so I was quite happy at the dinosaur variety.
These are never literary masterpieces but it's an enjoyable dinosaur-fest and it kept me pretty entertained overall.
What a wonderfully fun summer read! A new island forms in the Pacific, and the original team sent to investigate has not been heard from. A new team is sent, made up of geologists, explorers, and other non-military types. The island is certainly more than they bargained for! I really enjoyed the different types of characters in the story and thought it was very intense. I highly recommend this book!
5.0 out of 5 starsThrilling summer read. By Miss Lyn on July 28, 2016 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase The ocean is radically changed by the birth of a new volcanic island. A team from the UN is sent to scope out this new land. They get lots more than they bargained for.Long extinct creatures are found and some the team members are not what they seem. This book is chilling thrilling and a wonderful summer read. I recommend it highly.
A very nice small read sized book, some interesting characters but due to the size not much is given in terms of them. But what it lacks in character building it makes up for on story telling and the gory details.
As a big dinosaur fan and survival horrors, this ticks those boxes, i certainly enjoyed and do recommend to those after a nice short read. Honestly if this was Jurassic park size, i could see quite a epic book.
Also...i've learnt to fear turkeys from this book XD
A very interesting concept & plot delivery with colorful characters. The story moves quickly and definitely pulls you in. My only small gripe is I thought one characters actions & arc has been done before many times in other books. It's a good fast read that will keep you entertained.
Eight specialists arrive to explore a recently formed island / volcano. Turns out there's a whole load of dinosaurs on the island and our group face a battle to stay alive. Total nonsense, but a highly enjoyable read.
Just like the previous works by the author which I have read (including the most recent one: DMZ), Landing Party revolves around an ingenious idea. The story is a unique and interesting blend of dinosaurs (obviously), ambitions, intrigues, and world politics, all rolled into one, creating a special kind of read. I also love the fact that the characters, including the prehistoric creatures, are of enormous diversity! As always, Chesler uses his magnificent artistry to engage and captivate the readers throughout the journey, which involves thrilling adventure and gory scenes, and culminates in a perfect ending. One lesson I learned from this novel: Greed will (literally) kill you. That said, were there a higher degree of paleontological accuracy, this book would be better written. For example, in the novel a plesiosaur is considered to be a dinosaur, while it actually belongs to a different group of animals. On the whole, Landing Party is a great, fast-paced, action-packed thriller that I would recommend to anyone seeking one!
Landing Party was a fun Dino story that I breezed through rather quickly. It's not my favorite of Rick Chesler's, but it was cool all the same. I wish there had been a little more in the dinosaur department but this story is reminiscent of the dinosaur flicks from the 60's. Give it a go!
When you get in to it, you realize the whole diabolical plot. The plot, the island, and the creatures are so absurd that I should have quit sooner. If the whole scenario had been somewhat believable, I might have actually enjoyed it. But it wasn't. I don't recommend this book to anyone.
