Caramel Crush is the 9th book in Jenn McKinlay's Cupcake Bakery Mysteries, an amateur sleuth investigation series set in Arizona. Mel, Angie, and Tate co-own a bakery. Angie and Tate are engaged. Mel is engaged to Angie's brother. And they have a few shop employees. When a college friend shows up to collect on a favor, Mel is wary. But she agrees to deliver the break-up cupcakes to the woman's fiancé, who has apparently done something to warrant the end of their relationship. Unfortunately, Mel finds him dead in a warehouse. And soon, she crosses the new cop in town who also once had a fling with Mel's fiancé, Joe. Angie becomes a bridezilla. Mel learns some interesting news about Marty, one of her employees. And things get intense when she also discovers the killer's identity. Lots of wedding drama. Too many weddings tho!!! Good story and plot otherwise.

CARAMEL CRUSH is the ninth book in the Cupcake Bakery Mystery series by Jenn McKinlay but it’s the first book that I’ve tried from this series. Luckily, I had no trouble falling into this series. Upon starting, I knew right away that this was my type of mystery series. It’s cute and often silly, but there’s a great balance of mystery and intrigue as well. I have no trouble falling in line with the characters and getting lost in the story.

McKinlay’s easy way of writing and affable characters make it easy to fall in love with this book. This particular book has a emphasis on love and romance, something I feel that I know well since I’m a Romance reader at heart, so I felt like this was the perfect path for me to take to get into this series. With the heroine’s best friends getting married and other couples walking onto the pages, there’s a lot of baking for lovers going on here. But what’s interesting is Angie’s old friend, Diane, has asked her to bake her finest batch of cupcakes so that she can break up with her fiancé after she realizes that he’s only marrying her for her money. It’s a strange concept, but one that is very interesting. I think it’s a very cute way of bringing the cupcakes into the mix and I have to appreciate an author who is willing to take alternative, unusual routes to write their books.

After reading CARAMEL CRUSH, there’s no doubt that I will be going back to read the rest of the series. I can’t get enough of these fun-loving characters and I look forward to reading more of Jenn McKinlay.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Jenn McKinlay absolutely crushed this mystery! It just became my favorite in this series!

Angie is planning the “perfect” wedding and Mel, Tate, Marty and Oz are paying the price as she turns into a classic bridezilla, complete with breakdowns and blowups. Can they survive 3 more months? To add to the drama a college friend of Mel’s would like her to make a special cupcake delivery. Diane Earnest, has had enough of her fiancé and she is breaking up with him by sending him cupcakes and has asked Mel to use her phone to catch his reaction. Sadly his reaction time is pretty slow because when she finds him he is dead. Again, Mel is in the wrong place at the wrong time and becomes a suspect. She starts investigating to get herself out of this sticky situation all the while being the best maid of honor possible.

These characters always make me smile. The dialogue cracks me up because they all talk just the way I talk to my friends, sarcastic, blunt, zany, but always caring when they need to be. This is a group that would be fun to be part of. I love the different stages of romance. Angie and Tate, but mostly Angie, planning their wedding. “Dear Joe” and Mel’s relationship is moving in the right direction. Even Marty and Olivia trying to live together. There is never a dull moment.

Mel’s old roommate, Diane, is holding something from the past over Mel’s head, telling Mel she “owes her”. Diane is one pushy woman and because of the way Mel reacted to her constant requests I knew it had to be something major. Diane was that character that you really don’t like but she needs to be there to make the story work and push it forward. You know, the character you love to hate. She does help us learn about Mel’s past.

The story has a few very suspense filled moments but they are tempered with humor. I was laughing out loud numerous times. The pace was very quick and I think this was the fastest I have read a book in a long time. I was engaged and excited to see how it all played out.

Then in Jenn McKinlay style she wraps up one mystery and teases us with just enough for the next book to really whet our appetite. With a little taste (an excerpt) of what is to come and a title like Wedding Cake Crumble, I can only imagine what she has in store for these wonderful characters. I know we will probably have to wait until next April to find out but I know it will be worth the wait!

Every book in this series is a must read.

Let me preface this by saying I have very mixed feelings when it comes to this series. I enjoyed earlier books, but as the series progressed I found myself not enjoying it at much. I continue to read the series because I like this author and I like aspects of this series. However, this books left me extremely angry for one very specific reason. SPOILER ALERT: Mel's old college roommate Diane is (sort of) under suspicion for the murder of her fiancee. Diane enlists Mel to clear her name because Diane did something for Mel in their college days and Mel "owes her." What is the thing that Diane did for her? SHE STOPPED A COLLEGE BOY FROM SEXUALLY ASSAULTING MEL! Mel was at a college party, got roofied and ended up in the boys room. He was "doing his best to make moves" on her when Diane came in. Did I mention that he was going to film her? There are so many problems with this and it makes me so angry that the author chose this as the debt. Anyone who stops a sexual assault from happening is not owed a favor. Diane is a selfish person so maybe the author felt there needed to be a huge reason why Mel would help her, but that is not the reason she should have chose. It just left a really bad taste in my mouth which made it difficult to enjoy this. I'm not sure if I will continue with this series.

Caramel Crush seemed to be just a filler book. Angie still hasn't gotten married yet (another 3 months!) and Angie has turned into a bridezilla. Mel is on her own for most of the mystery, which involves her old college roommate.

I didn't find the mystery that interesting and it took a backseat to everything else going on in the novel, which was Angie's and Mel's love lives. I hated Angie's bridezilla moments, which was so unlike her character. Also there was a lack of Mel, Angie and Tate's friendship, which was one of my favourite part of the series. Their interactions all revolved around Angie's meltdowns.

Also why does each book have to end on a cliffhanger that barely gets mentioned in the following book. Loyal fans will continue to read the series, regardless if there is a cliffhanger. Guess I will have to wait until the next book to see the wedding.

Reuniting with my old friends Mel, Tate and Angie I knew I would be in for a fun, entertaining read filled with Mel's wild shenanagigans to solve a murder and much to my surprise Angie's bridezilla moments.

Over the top and wacky characters and the cupcakes don't hurt either.Author Jenn McKinlay manages to come up with a way out there setting for a murder that had me laughing out loud and she also managed to tug at my heart strings with some crazy characters along the way.

Caramel Crush was filled with romance of a magical and left me very emotional. The murderer had it coming and the surprising twist at the end that made my heart sink made me dying to read the next book in the series,Wedding Cake Crumble.

One of the best books in this series, in my opinion! The ending completely shocked me - I didn't see it coming. Diane, Mel's friend, was a complex, flawed, and interesting character that I enjoyed learning more about.

Definitely not the best in the series. There were so many problematic things that were rife with sexism, but the worst was how Mel thought she was indebted to Diane because Diane "saved" her from being raped. And while I get that Diane was a horrible, manipulative person who would definitely use that to her advantage, I didn't like that Mel and everyone else felt that Diane "saving her" was so heroic when it really is what a normal, decent human being would do. And it really bothered me that Mel blamed herself and no one stepped in to tell her that she was not to blame.

I also wasn't a fan of the wedding subplot. It dragged down the mystery, which was actually pretty interesting. All of the bridezilla shenanigans kept pulling us away from the murder. And as someone who is so direct, I got really tired of everyone pussyfooting around Angie and her behavior. I was so glad when her mom finally showed up and told her to knock it off. Why don't we get more of Angie's mom? She and Tate's mom are both great characters that add a little zest to an aging series. I'm hoping we get more of them in future books.

Mel’s college roommate has finally come to collect on a favor that Mel owes her, and Diane wants Mel to deliver break up cupcakes to her ex-fiance. However, the delivery doesn’t go as planned when Mel finds Mike’s body. With the police looking at Diane as the killer, suddenly Mel finds herself with a new favor – keep Diane out of prison.

Who can you not love a book that starts out with break up cupcakes? The story that follows delivers on the promise with plenty of viable suspects and some good twists. I did feel Mel was foolish at the end of the book, but that was my only complaint. All the usual supporting characters are here, and they are their usual charming selves. I just love them! And there is one scene guaranteed to melt your heart.

NOTE: I received a copy of this book.

This is 9th in the series about Mel who owns a cupcake bakery. Her co-owner Angie is planning her wedding and going totally over the top causin a lot of problems for Mel. Mel's old friend Diane wants Mel to make cupcakes to break up with her fiancé and when Mel takes them there she finds the fiancé dead. Mel owes Diane for something big in her past so she agrees to find out who killed him. Mel is also busy with her own romance. Lots of layers to the story makes it very enjoyable.

This is the first book in the series for me, 9th book in the series for Jenn McKinlay, boy have I been missing out. This was a great cozy. A perfect read on a day when I needed an escape more than I craved a cupcake.
Even though I did not know or understand the backstory of these characters it really did not matter and I fell quickly into step. I am not normally a fan of books with a wedding plot but I loved this one. This was written in a caring and viable way, reminding me of my own Bridezilla moments and those of my friends, almost 20 years ago. Funny how timeless the Bridezilla Phenomenon is, how quickly it bonds and relates the story to you. I loved it. I could not put it down and think that this is a series I should go back and read. The cover is spectacular and even the bit characters stood out to me, and I hope they stand out to you too.

Mel is up to her eyeballs in wedding madness. Most of it comes from Angie who is about to be married soon. Angie has turned into bridezilla and Mel can't take much more drama. Then her old college roommate, Diane Earnest, a high-powered businesswoman, asks Mel to bake break-up cupcakes for her soon-to-be-ex-fiance. Mel is reluctant to get involved but Diane reminds Mel that Mel owes her a huge favor. Mel agrees to bake and deliver the cupcakes but when she arrives at the place of delivery, she finds it abandoned, except for a dead body in a ball pit. The dead body belongs to Diane's erstwhile fiance and first Mel, then Diane, become the chief suspects. Mel knows in her heart Diane would never do something like that so she sets out to clear Diane's name.

The mystery part of the story was very compelling. There were so many twists, red herrings and lies. I didn't guess who did it until just before Mel found herself in danger. I was surprised though because the clues did not lead there. I didn't like how Mel defied wiser heads and rushed headlong into danger.

Character-wise, this plot fell a little short of the mark. In many ways Mel's character growth has been excellent, but otherwise I didn't care for the relationship aspect. Mel and Joe have come a long way. I love them together but he is almost too good for her. My major problem was with Mel and Diane. Why was Mel trying to be friends with mean girls in college? She already knew Angie and Tate and knew she didn't need to seek approval of the mean girls. She could have requested a room change or at very least NOT roomed with Diane their second year. Diane is an awful person. At the time I would have felt a tiny bit sorry for her but Diane does not exercise good judgement, kindness or anything that would make her likeable. Her mother is even worse. With a mother like hers, who needs enemies? Diane's choice of friends is just as bad. I liked Elliott but he's too gosh darned naive and sweet to be sucked into Diane's orbit.

The other major problem with the book is Angie. I never figured self-confident Angie as a bridezilla. Her reasoning doesn't make sense. I loved the scene with the moms which added some much-needed comic relief but otherwise Angie's drama drove me crazy.

As always Marty is on hand to provide the comic relief. I don't know what he was getting at with Olivia in the beginning- a way out maybe? He is endearing despite his crudeness and fondness for Mel's biggest rival. I felt really bad for him at the end. He's happier than he's ever been and though I see where his children are coming from, I think there's more to the story here.

***************Reread June 2022 bumping to 3.5 stars*********************

Bumping to 3.5 stars. It's always a great time catching up with the Fairy Tale crew. Even though I remembered the mystery part perfectly and even some of the cozy, I still enjoyed the book. I could have done without Angie's bridezilla but Mel and Joe are so sweet and perfect. He is a prince among men, except when it comes to Tate and his little sister LOL!

I could also do without Det. Tara Martinez and her hostility towards Mel but Mel was behaving like a spoiled brat.

There are tons of cupcake recipes here to drool over or try.

I’m always thrilled when there’s a new Cupcake Bakery Mystery!

First off, an award goes out for sweetest way to break up with someone, and another award for most creative place to find a body. And the last award is for tastiest sounding cupcakes! My stomach always growling when reading a Cupcake Bakery Mystery. Thankfully, author Jenn McKinlay includes recipes so readers can bake their own treats from the book! Hmmm . . . I for one would love to see a Fairytale Cupcakes cookbook come from this series.

CARAMEL CRUSH starts off fun and fast. There was so much going on it made it hard to put the book down. Between wedding plans with Angie and Tate, break up talk with Marty and Olivia, and Mel as away in the middle of it all, it was hard to catch my breath. And that was just the first chapter!

In the center of all the chaos that is Fairytale Cupcakes and its crew, CARAMEL CRUSH had a good solid mystery that had my brain working overtime to solve. Once the who and why are revealed, a reader normally thinks the end of the surprises are near. Not so with this story. As seems to be the style of Jenn McKinlay, more so in recent books, there is a huge cliffhanger at the end.

This has been one of my top three favorite series sense I started reading cozy mysteries. I adore everything about it. The setting, the characters (One of the greatest cast of characters ever.), the entire concept. That being said, with all the positive things about this book, something felt off about CARAMEL CRUSH.

The first thing I noticed, the fun sarcasm associated with this series seemed a little over done in this story. What made me laugh in past books, made me cringe a bit in this one and think to myself . . . That was a bit harsh and over the top. Second thing, Mel has found dead bodies before. The way she handled the discovery in this story seemed a little reckless and out of character for her. And the main thing that about the book, it just felt . . . off. Almost as though author McKinlay came up with the whole thing, but someone else wrote it. You know what I mean? I

Having said all that, I do love this series. Every time I read one, I feel like I’m with good friends. You know, I’m there with them, just a silent character.  I am already anticipating book 10, WEDDING CAKE CRUMBLE.

I have become such a fan of this series in such a short time. These are wonderful characters and I will be a bit sad when I join the test of this author's fans in having to wait for each new book. I really enjoy how things are coming together for Angie & Tate and Mel & Joe. Although I wasn't overly thrilled with Angie's bridezilla antics. I think the author does a nice job if leaving mini cliffhangers to get readers excited for the next book.

4.5 stars

I would read a how-to manual if Jenn McKinlay wrote one. I can’t help but snort laugh when I read a cupcake mystery book. Mel and Angie are hilarious and then you throw in drunk moms and well there you have it. Snort laughs. The only thing that would make the book better is if they came with actual cupcakes you could eat while reading.

I gave it 4.5 stars only because I was irritated with Angie the Bridezilla. I would be a Mel and want to hide from her and/or strangle her. I kept picturing the Steel Magnolias scene if “Smack her Weezer!”

There were so many surprises at the ending. One had me teary eyed and I’m a bit miffed I can’t just jump into the next book.

Cupcake recipes abound at the end. Even though summer is over I’m seriously thinking of baking the Key Lime ones.

This series has been on an upswing - getting rid of love triangles helps a lot. This one sees Mel's old college roommate asking for a favor that ends up leading her to another dead body. And now the friend wants Mel to clear her. At the same time Angie is turning into a Bridezilla and driving everyone crazy.

I love the relationships in this series and the cupcakes sound amazing. We also got a bit of a surprise about Marty at the end of the book.

Angie and Tate are getting married....Marty and Olivia are cohabitating....and they are all driving Mel nuts. She is caught between trying to be a good friend, running a business, and saving her sanity. And then and old "friend" bullies her into helping with a break up. Could it get worse? Oh yes...yes it can. Mel stumbles upon ANOTHER dead body and somehow gets involved with proving her "friend's" innocence.

I wish we saw more of Angie being herself and helping Mel sleuth. This wedding planning thing has turned her into a completely different person, which was slightly disappointing. I must say she had more patience with Angie than I probably would have. Hopefully after her wedding, she will be back to her spunky and snooping self. We also didn't see ANY of Oz, and I really miss him! This was more like a Mel solo adventure, which is nice, but I really wanted to see more of the gang.

I don't know if I would put myself in danger and investigate a murder for someone who I hadn't see for years and was so terrible as Diane. That woman was horrible and I don't see how Mel could have seen her as a friend, even in college. By the end I wanted to throw things at her and tell her she got what she deserved. But I didn't think she was the killer and I was totally stumped as to who it was. I did enjoy how Mel got Joe's sketchy brother Ray to help, and was totally surprised by the ending.

The next book Tate and Angie are FINALLY getting married and I hope after that things will get back to their murder and mystery solving normalcy with all the gang involved. Also, POOR MARTY!

"Why are you hiding in the walk-in cooler?" Melanie Cooper asked her friend and business partner Tate Harper.

Angie is in full Bridezilla mode as her wedding to Tate approaches. Mel receives a surprise visit from her college roommate, Diane Earnest. It seems that Diane's own wedding plans are coming to a screeching halt. She asks Mel to bake cupcakes to break up with her fiancé, She wants Mel to deliver the cupcakes personally and report back with his reaction. Unfortunately, Mel finds his body and is soon the main suspect in his death.

This series gets better with each book. I love the interaction between the characters. You feel like you know each one of them as a dear friend.

I was surprised that Angie had become a moody, high maintenance Bridezilla. I thought that she would love planning her wedding to Tate. It does provide some interesting reading.

I love that Mel and Joe are progressing in their relationship. I'm with Mel's mom, Joyce that "dear Joe" is the perfect match for Mel.

Diane was an interesting character. She is constantly reminding Mel that Mel owes her a huge favor from an incident in college. It causes Mel to put herself in danger (well, that is kinda Mel anyway) in order to find the killer.

Diane's fiancé was an absolute jerk. I could see why there were so many suspects in the case. He certainly made a bad impression on a lot of people.

The introduction of Tara Martinez creates another adversary for Mel. She is Manny's cousin and has an attitude regarding Mel and her perceived influence on Manny. It will be interesting to see how things shake out with Tara as Uncle Stan's partner.

I tend to read these books in one sitting (as I did today) because I enjoy them so much. I love the characters, the bakery, the mystery and of course the recipes. I look forward to the next book.

Caramel Crush is the ninth book in the A Cupcake Bakery Mystery series.

Another delightful visit with Mel, Angie, and Tate, even with Angie being a basket-case.

Angie and Tate’s wedding will be happening soon and Angie is turning into a bridezilla. Mel loves her like a sister but still…

Mel is excited when she gets a phone call from her college roommate, Diane Ernest, but that soon ends when Diane says “you owe me one”. It seems she is breaking up with her fiance, Mike Bordow, and wants Mel to bake some breakup cupcakes and personally deliver them so that she can capture his reaction on her cellphone while Diane watches. When Mel finally locates him at his place of business, a party supply company, he is in a ball pit covered by hundreds of balls and has been brutally murdered.

Naturally, Ernest becomes the prime suspect, but Mel is confident that she is innocent and sets off to prove her innocence. Mel soon finds that there quite a few other suspects and needs to sift through them before time runs out on Ernest.

Another interesting and enjoyable story from McKinlay. Most all the of regular characters from previous books are back once to help Mel and to watch her back.
Delicious recipes are also included in the book.

Looking forward to the next book in this delectable series.

Book 9 in this well-written, witty, engaging mystery series finds Fairy Tale Cupcakes co-owner Melanie Cooper making break-up cupcakes for a college friend while trying to corral her BFF and co-owner Angie DeLaura’s descent into Bridezilla. Angie and Tate Harper, the third co-owner and BFF, are finally tying the knot. Tate just wants Angie to be happy and Angie’s very wound up because she wants everything to be perfect for Tate, to show she can fit into his upper crust world.

Mel’s friend, Diane Earnest, wants Mel to deliver the cupcakes to her former fiancé and give Diane a blow-by-blow description of the event. When Mel arrives at the location, she stumbles over the ex-fiancé dead in a ball pit and ruins the crime scene by puking. The cops, including one who has the hots for Mel’s boyfriend, are looking askance at Mel and at Diane, and Mel feels obligated to get herself out of trouble and help clear her friend.

This series has stood the test of time for me. I like the relationship between Mel, Angie and Tate, the way they fling movie quotes at each other, and how they have each other’s backs. I have enjoyed watching the various relationships progress, and I particularly enjoyed watching Mel struggle with her flaws (jealousy and occasional low self-esteem) and come out on top. The secondary characters are well-described, and even the minor characters are dimensional. The dialogue makes me laugh out loud, and the mysteries are always fun. And, each book contains delicious sounding cupcake recipes in the back.

I recommend reading this series in order. You could read them out of order, but I think watching the characters progress through the books makes the experience much more enjoyable. These characters have become like friends to me over through the series, and I’m always a little sad because I know I’ll have to wait for the next book to be able to see my “friends” again.

Another amazing installment of the Cupcake Bakery mysteries. Mel owes a favor to her old college roommate, Diane so when Diane comes in to the bakery, asking Mel to bake break-up cupcakes for her fiance, Mel does it. Diane wants Mel to take the cupcakes to her fiance and give her a blow-by-blow of his reaction. Mel begrudgingly agrees, but when she gets to his play of business, he's no where to be found. Diane encourages her to keep searching and Mel finally finds him, dead. Diane becomes suspect number 1 and keeps reminding Mel of her unpaid debt, promising she will be even if she proves Diane's innocence. Mel is trying to balance the bakery, proving Diane's innocence and trying to calm Angie turned Bridezilla.

I love this series. Never fails to draw me in!

Angie to everyone’s amazement and dismay has turned into a bridezilla. With a major meltdown threatening nearly every day, not even her best friend Mel and her fiancé want to be around her. When Mel’s old college roommate orders break-up cupcakes for her soon to be ex-fiancé, Mel has no idea that when she delivers them, she’ll find out he is an “ex” in more ways than one. She is once again embroiled in trying to solve a murder, this time to clear her old roommate, and to not get killed or in trouble with her uncle or Joe in the process. And all that is still better than dealing with Angie’s wedding woes and tears. This series remains fresh and entertaining and readers will no doubt be clamoring for the next book.
