MOCKINGBIRD has to fight her way through a S.H.I.E.L.D. medical clinic, learning some awkward private medical information about her super hero colleagues in the process. Nagging questions regarding ping pong balls and zombie levitation will be answered! And Bobbi will punch a whole lot of dead old people.
Chelsea Cain is the New York Times bestselling author of the Archie Sheridan/Gretchen Lowell thrillers Heartsick, Sweetheart, Evil at Heart, The Night Season, Kill You Twice, and Let Me Go. Her next book One Kick (August, 2014) will be the first in her Kick Lannigan thriller series. Her book Heartsick was named one of the best 100 thrillers ever written by NPR, and Heartsick and Sweetheart were named among Stephen King's Top Ten Books of the Year. Her books have been featured on HBO's True Blood and on ABC's Castle. Cain lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and daughter.
The puzzle box story comes to a close, continuing to be delightful! We even get the added bonus of a Miles Morales and Howard the Duck team up with Mockingbird versus zombies!
1. The opening letter of Chelsea Cain to Bobbi. I love this so much. It makes me laugh even more knowing that in the next issue Kate drew herself in. These ladies rock!
2. The first page of panels. It's just so funny and sarcastic, and there's so much going on. Bobbi is just 100% done with superheroes. "I am a special snowflake. Just like all the other special snowflakes. Does it ever seem like there are more super heroes than there used to be?" What's going on in this panel, you may ask. How about Ms. Marvel trying to impress Captain Marvel or Spider-Man complaining he's allergic to grass. Also, Wolverine and Black Panther comparing claws.
3. Bobbi really doesn't like zombies. "The worst thing about zombies? The stains. Cadaver juice. It's the mother of all bodily fluids. It takes sodium hypochlorite bleach to get out of nylons. The number of pantyhose I went through in the nineties could fill the Baxter building."
4. Also, Bobbi really doesn't like her SHIELD health insurance.
5. The page of panels entitled Other Things People Thought Might Work. I especially love the subprime mortgages one. Also, the SHIELD doctor being completely honest about why she does what she does. "Have you ever considered using your medical degree for good?" "I have a lot of student loans."
6. Bobbi's version of yoga (ass-kicking) and how done she is with her parapsychologist. Also, they have a pull in case of zombies alarm? SHIELD is prepared.
7. Bobbi kicking zombie butt and loving every minute of it. "I'm a happy person. Despite what all those marriage counselors said. In fact, I'm happy right now. Or maybe that's just a pre-battle adrenaline rush. I'm always getting those confused."
8. Bobbi's 100% done with SHIELD bureaucracy crap.
9. Depressed Howard the Duck? Miles Morales (Spider-Man) with chicken pox? Howard the Duck waxing poetically while Spider-Man is just so teenage boy? Them teaming up to kick zombie butt with Bobbi and find the antiviral? YES!
10. "Everyone and everything we know and love. Thanks to a virus. We all carry mutations. Genetic mutations can give you laser vision. Or cancer. Or color blindness. Sometimes a mutation is on a DNA strand that doesn't do anything at all. And sometimes-- almost never-- a genetic mutation will cause an entire species to make an evolutionary leap forward. Think about it... a virus with powers. Sounds like something a biologist would want to protect."
A little bit more than 2 stars for this issue. I liked that we finally got back to S.H.I.E.L.D labs and the story going on there. Plus, Bobbie has some cool friends helping her out.
